The fat over lean rule does NOT refer to the thickness of the paint layer. Oil paint is made of pigment and oil, typically linseed oil. The 'fat' refers to the amount of linseed oil. So your first layer will be oil paint straight from the tube (lean) and in subsequent layers you add more linseed oil (fat) to adhere to the fat over lean rule.

Very useful information! Water mixable oils is the next medium I want to learn and I've never used oils so haven't really understood how to use the "fat" element. Very insightful! I'll reference this vid when I get my paints. Love the glow of the girl's cheeks! 👍👍🥰🥰
Hi Animal Art by TerraCotta I am glad you found the tutorial useful. There are more on the way. Next week I will be looking at how I use glazes with water mixable oils. I think they would definitely compliment your work because you would be able to achieve some really subtle, natural colours that are difficult to achieve with acrylics and also you can work back into them whereas acrylics dry immediately so there is no going back. ✨👩🏻🎨✨🎨✨

Hi , I m a little confused 😐 if I started a painting in these oils today can I go back into it the next day over the same paint . Thank you
@soniabrickell yes especially if you layer up quite thick - best thing is to go out and experiment - it also depend on the colours you use - i have a portrait that I painted recently ( over a month ago) but and some areas have dried but some areas are still very wet so I have to hold off adding touch varnish - Hope this helps 😀

when you add fine details you need a thinner paint. i am not understanding how you add an eyelash with gooey paint
Hi @wisdomite1971 and welcome to the channel. With water mixable oils there are 2 ways - one is by simply adding water and the second is by adding medium to increase the flow of the paint (for traditional oils you also need to do this with linseed oil for a top layer) as oil straight out of the tube is too thick - Hope this helps and have a Happy Painting WeeK !! 🎨 👍🏻👩🏻🎨
Does there need to be any time frame of “drying” or oxidation between the lean layers and fat layers? I’m about to begin using water mixable oils and I come from a watercolour background, so of course I have the urge to let layers breathe. 😂 This may be counterintuitive with oil paints I see- just looking for clarification. 😅 Thank you for your video- I’ll need to purchased some medium before I start!
Hi Brittany - they should be touch dry with 2 -12 days depending on the colour eg Alizarin Crimson takes a very long time to dry. When the surface is touch drh then you are good to go 😀
I don’t do oil painting anymore, it was always challenging to me because drying speed is so slow. I believe all the oil painters are very patient. 😂👍🏾
You talked about “fast drying, slow drying , cracks” ..all so difficult for me 😂😂😂 I though the cracks were cool . I was wrong .

I currently am waiting for the linen that I use to be back in stock so that I can make some stretchers and then once I have completed the paintings I will have to wait for a year for the paintings to cure before I can think about selling them - It would be easier for me to do watercolours but nothing tops oil paints (in my opinion) for portraits which is my passion !! ✨👩🏻🎨✨🎨✨
