It’s worth noting that the role of Holly’s illness is the reason Jotaro decided to even embark on this odyssey. Baring assassins like Kakyoin, he has no motivation to go after DIO at the beginning of SC, the only people who do being Joseph and Avdol. When his mother’s life is threatened by DIO’s blood curse, he does decide to go because whether the OVA shows it or not, Jotaro loves his mother (this is shown in the recent anime and the original manga as Holly charges to rescue Jotaro from prison, as her cherished memories of him being a lovely son play out in their sepia glory), whether or not the disrespectful shit shows it.

But that ending was NOT pulled off effectively!! It was a frigging rip-off of Gureen Lagaan!! He better pray Ganax studios never sees that or he's on the receiving end of a lawsuit! And that ending was NOT solid it was a throw together mess that made no damn sense at the end! And Jacxk was heartbroken! He was miserable! How can you say it was solid, you LIOKE seeing him sad and lonely?! You DO?! Did we wait 13 years for that?!~ You may have...BUT I DIDN;T AND I WANT A DO-OVER!

    • @chromebison5900

okay...I doubt Gainax studios would get riled up. Disney made Atlantis: the Lost Empire which in essence was similar to Nadia: secret of the blue water, which said anime in turn was inspired by Jules Verne's Journey to he Center of the Earth. The creators deny watching Nadia, but the similarities remain. Gainax, in turn had Gunbuster and Evangelion, both of which were influenced by Yoshiyuki Tomino's Space Runaway Ideon, Gunbuster less so in terms of basing the titular mecha's design off the Ideon, while the film End of Evangelion had an apocalyptic conclusion similar to the conclusion of the film Ideon: Be Invoked, which the latter had an ending inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's Childhoods End's conclusion.
Whether or not Gainax filed suit for Atlantis, or if the would go on and sue Cartoon Network for Samurai Jacks Ending, it would be Hypocritical to do so considering how many of Gainax's works were derivative from other fiction. Though I do not shame them for deriving narrative considering how fiction in general is derivative.

I as an Anime/manga fan who also happens to be a Muslim, the whole situation with the Quran didn't bother me, because as Sage said its mostly due to miscommunication and cultural error than malicious intent because after all one of the heroes of Stardust Crusaders Advol (original named Abdul after pop singer/OG American Idol judge Paula Abdul but was changed to Advol to avoid copyright), is supposed to be a muslim himself.
As for the buildings that looked mosques being destroyed in the manga's original print, that didn't bother me either since you know there are works of media in Japan that had scenes of their own religious monuments being destroyed.

    • @MrBroken030
      @MrBroken030 6 років тому +20

Im not affiliated with any supersitious faith or religion so its really hard for me to grasp what the problem is with those scenes. Is it the implication that Dio is a bad guy because he reads the Quran?
Or is it more about Dio having read the Quran and he is being villain despite having read the godly message? What was the actual problem with Dio reading the Quran? How and why where religious feelings of so many hurt by that scene, it really doesnt make any sense to me. Would it been okay if Jotaro read the Quran or is any depiction of the Quran regardless of who is reading it a problem? Is the depiction of the Quran just as forbidden as creating any depiction of the holy prophet?
I wish i could understand it but the only reason i could see for this outrage is that muslim people are very proud people and they are also overprotective of their faith. I personally think its pretty scary that some people are so deeply, emotionally involved in their faith that they become irrational and sometimes even dangerous to others.
" there are works of media in Japan that had scenes of their own religious monuments being destroyed."
Why can the japanese tollerate such a fictional depiction of their monuments being destroyed without outrage but the muslims are super upset about a building that could be a mosque being depicted as destroyed in a fictional work? Why are muslims so snivering when it comes to their faith?
I really dont get it and im sure i will never get it.

@@Elementa2006 it's weird since there have been Bible - reading villains portrayed since Dante's Inferno. I guess it might be that many Muslims are more sensitive because they're portrayed in media a lot less overall.
Still, I understand that Islam is very diverse in how it's practiced across different cultures, but the overreactions many have over this, The Message, Salman Rushdie, Charlie Hebdo, etc are a much worse look than a villain reading a book.

19:04 There was a mistake here in your underderstanding when it comes to the sounds Araki was talking about. He wasn't talking about the battle sounds, he was talking about the atmospheric background SFX that he drew swirling around the page as part of the art itself, representing an undercurrent of dread, of suspense or of terror. It's something you'll see all over manga today but was something Araki basically pioneered. I'm talking stuff like ゴゴゴゴゴ(gogogogogo) or ドドドドド (dododododo). Does that not sound far more similar to the sounds of horror movies and progressive rock?

Jotaro gets a little more depth in the manga/more recent adaptation, in Part 4, and especially in Part 6. Basically, his whole thing is that underneath the cool, stoic exterior, he's a bit of a dork (he's interested in marine biology and Columbo, among other things) and that he does care deeply about his friends and family. Heck, he gets badly injured for the sake of both his mom, and later, his daughter (who rightfully calls him out for being TOO stoic and not filling in her and her poor mother in on the whole Stand thing, since he was worried a violent Stand user might hurt them to get to him).
Kakyoin gets a bit more depth in the manga/more recent anime too, including an anime-exclusive scene that gives him even more backstory. Basically, he purposely ostracized himself, thinking no one would be able to relate to having a Stand, and DIO manipulated the poor kid into doing his bidding, on the grounds that he'd finally have someone who felt the same way he did. Oof.

You could have said that just as well without all the hashtags, but I see your point.
I'm not saying it's excusable and that everything made before the so called "SJW" movement should be given a free pass. I'm simply suggesting that what is and isn't socially acceptable changes with time and it's not all together fair to judge people based on the sensibilities they didn't know existed. Doesn't mean their behavior isn't toxic or even that it wasn't toxic back then, but it does mean that toxicity comes from a place of ignorance instead of outright malice. At least with situations like these.
I'm not saying the time period of creation makes these kinds of things ok, or even justifiable, but it does make it more understandable on an objective level. And I'll say again, in a time where everyone is jumping to either side of the internet, we could really use with more objectiveness.

@@ValD98 that's objectively Falls. Me too isn't about women just wanting the accusing men of rape, its exposing the longstanding history of sexual predators in Hollywood. The term Casting Couch exist for a reason. And some of these guys - A lot of these guys attached many of these women had no desire to sleep with them. Trust me.
Right to vote and be responsible for your sake as a citizen of the country. Women wanted to be recognized as cognitive human beings and not a viewed as property or a trade. To fight in the war especially bag then would be too much either for women especially with how they were seen as dainty and the fact of the matter is would have a physical disadvantage in war because of the biological advantage of man has. Or are you saying that because someone is more physically powerful that the others mental capacity should be disregarded and they should be treated differently and have different right? That the more physically capable should have their voices heard while the disadvantaged and strength and a disabled should be shoved in the background and be told to keep quiet?

    • @ValD98
      @ValD98 5 років тому +8

@@AmazingAutist You've clearly heard way too much feminist non-sense on these topics.
First of all, the women that headed the women's suffrage movement wanted voting rights only for upper class women. Had nothing to do with supporting women in general. Second, yes, women would have a biological disadvantage due to their lack of physical strength. Yet I don't see you arguing that voting discriminate against children because they're cognitively less capable than adults. Their _biology_ restricts them as less responsible than adults. Should we give children voting rights as well? Are children viewed as property or a means of trade because they can't vote? Obviously not. Voting isn't a right, it's a privilege.
Besides that, before universal male suffrage due to the draft during WW1 (which was a mistake IMO) the right to vote was only given to NET tax payers (meaning people who pay more into the government than they take out in benefits). That's generally a better system since NET taxpayers are the ones responsible for their country, so they should be the ones voting on it's development. The problem with universal female suffrage is that women get so much welfare their tax payments are meaningless, so they just end up being human parasites on the economy. If we went back to the old system, most women wouldn't be voting, and in fact most them didn't at the time despite the law being gender neutral. And yes, this would indeed be 'silencing' most women, but they haven't earned a political voice in any tangible way, so they don't deserve a say in a country they're not responsible for just because they live in it, just like a child doesn't have a say in what goes on in the house.
Finally, look - any person or movement that asks you to blindly believe you without question is a guaranteed scam. Yeah, some women have exposed genuine predators, but most women are simply using to get back at a co-worker for their own selfish gain. This isn't the first time a group of women has done this, BTW. Back when Jim Crow era lynchings and Salem witch hunts were a thing, most people who falsely accused men of witchcraft and rape were women. Women lie. And they lie so much because they know you'll believe them. They can't even be genuine with their face and body - what makes you think they're be genuine about rape if you don't ask for evidence, like, at least a fucking police report?

    • @ValD98
      @ValD98 5 років тому +7

@@AmazingAutist Also, casting coach is basically actress prostitution. They sleep with the manager, he gives them a role. If they're forced to do it, it's rape, if they aren't and they just want the easy way out, it's not, it's a fucking exchange. Most of the accusations fall under the second category, because the actresses weren't being threatened with anything if they refused a producer's advances.

It would have to be the fact that Dio being such a horrible person holding and reading something that is holy and sacred would make them get mad. As a Muslim myself, when I first heard of this (I was already into Jojo at this point), that made me feel uncomfortable because it's a religious book Muslims hold very deeply in their hearts. After 100 years and basically never even hearing of Islam, I understand why Dio would want to read up on it. However, he is a bastard that practically denies God (anyone can see that), so him reading something religious makes it seem blasphemous and disrespectful to the book and religion.

oh no, they didn't JUST give Enya a new 'ability', oh no, what they did was combine the traits of two seperate characters into one. that random 'lovesmitten' woman that saves hol horse? in the manga/newer anime, she is ALSO one of the villains trying to kill the heroes, specifically the user of The Empress who as far as we can tell murdered a more beutiful woman and hid inside her corpse while using her stand to attack Joeseph. they combined the one trait (disguising herself as a beautiful woman) and gave it to Enya in the OVA, meaning they ERASED a female character.
Not to mention there were at least a couple more female villains who don't appear in the OVA

  • @shenloken2
    @shenloken2 2 роки тому +4

An hour long video of Sage and yet this is still only the tip of the Jojo Iceberg. There is SO much to unpack beyond the OVA to truly understand Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure as a whole.
For one thing Stardust Crusaders is like Final Fantasy VII. It’s the most popular of the series and it’s main hero may be the face of the series when ppl typically think of it. But it’s not the most beloved. Diamond is Unbreakable and Golden Wind are just warmly embraced.
Secondly is the issue of the inclusiveness of women in Jojo. Obviously for timing reasons a lot of female (and male) characters were cut from the OVA that appeared in the original arc. As was pointed out the women who threw herself at Hol Horse wasn’t just some whaif throwing herself to him. In both the manga and 2014 anime she was also a Stand User. Her role was diminished simply by virtue the battle of Hol Horse and J Geil was too pivotal to the story to omit. Her Stand battle with old Joseph wasn’t as important.
But if we just lookit Stardust Crusaders as a whole representation of the series as a sausage-fest that of course is grossly misrepresented. Not only did you have Jolyne Kujoh leading in Stone Ocean but the arc prior to Stardust Crusaders (Battle Tendency) had Lisa Lisa training Young Joseph and Ceasar Zeppeli.
Also though Jojo appeals to boys cause of the escapsim of a typical battle anime; the fact is Jojo isn’t just full of men. It’s full of beautiful and sexy men. Something female fans absolutely adore; hence why Jojo has so many of them. The series is just as much fan service to women as it is to men.
And finally the entire controversy on how people reacted to the inclusion of the Qaran. At the very end of that discussion Sage came to the logical conclusion that the initial reaction to it and the consequences thereafter was in fact “stupid.” So much happened due to a knee-jerk reaction e spiraled out of control to the point they had to apologize and stop distributing the DVD. Even with the Jinx controversy that took some time to have a discussion about how unintentionally offensive that was before a decision was made to alter her. With Jojo no time was given simply because by this time internet and social media was in full bloom. And what is social media other than knee-jerk reactions to controversy blown heavily out of proportion. Rarely since this episode aired has there been civil discussion about controversial topics regarding cultural sensitivity. Social media is full of reactionary rage addicts who don’t want to discuss why something is controversial. It’s controversy for the sake of controversy and people want instant justification and gratification as to why they feel upset. So while Sage was right on the mark with how we need to judge slowly…That sadly doesn’t happen in the world of social media. It’s judge quickly and execute immediately. It’s more about instant gratification than calm retrospection.
And even everything I talked about isn’t even the tip of Jojo. There is always so much much much more to talk about the series as a whole.
That’s also why it’s so great!

If I suddenly change, erase or omit something because _someone_ might take it the wrong way, how is that not me censoring my own creativity.
Creativity should be given free reign to be what it is, without moral fearmongers shackling it down. Simple facts, there is always going to be someone offended by everything, so why should I or any other creative person second and third guess everything created because theres a chance it might offend someone.

mollys case is not solely related to women
in diamond is unbreakable we see another character not having a "strong fighting spirit" and his own stand ends up killing him
    this is A RULE
    applied to EVERY USER
    man
    women
    animal
if your "fighting spirit" is not strong enough then your stand will harm you
we have seen other stand users that ARE women but their stands do not harm them
because their "fighting spirit" is strong enough to have control over it
lets just say that molly was strong in nature and spirit
then her stand wouldnt be trying to kill her
you can have a nature like molly and at the same time have a "strong fighting spirit"
    for example koichi
    hes nice, gentle, polite person
but as the arc progresses we see that he has a strong fighting spirit specially when a stand user threatens koichis family

Great episode for the most part though there is an inherent issue with the concept of "outrage as a means of agency". Yes your quote of judging slowly is spot on in every sense, but that quote only functions within the confines of those whom choose to judge on the hair trigger. As you've mentioned certain marginalized groups have pushed to gain more inclusion in media (in which they have every right to do so). The problem is that when these groups much like they have done in comics/games/ manga/news do not care for context because context is not required in the intellectual frame of mind they use to examine the world, and by proxy its media. To these individuals on both extremes there exists this Neo Hegelian thought process of deconstructing ones surroundings and media as tools of the oppressor or as means of subverting/burying or otherizing some sort of subject of people. This is regardless of intent or context, and this is evidenced in several artistic works over the past decade or so.
Its very much the "everything is .... and you need to point it all out" quote thats become famous and I think its something to keep in mind that yes we must focus on progress, but not to the point in which a work loses its artistic soul or loses what made the original property special. This much has become the norm with western media in their attempts to cater and satisfy based on calculated outrage rather than what services the story. keep up the good work

Between the nonexistence of the glorious Engrish that's basically that series trade mark and the fact that their Japanese voices are basically forever imprinted on the characters for me I could never do it. 57:00 I don't think there's really anything to unpack. Oh no, the bad guy is reading a book that just happens to be one religion's holy text. Oh no, there were mosques in the background for a few fights. My question is: so what? No one would have bat an eye if Dio had been reading the Book of Mormon or some other holy book. But because it's the Qu'ran everyone pitches a fit, just like they do now. Glad to see nothing has changed in the last ten years >w>

Given that anime regularly shows fantastical and destructive versions of religions that actually ARE prevalent in Japan, I seriously doubt it was meant as a sleight against Islam. I think was purely and aesthetic choice, like NGE and all the Christian and Kabbalistic symbols.

As a Mormon, it would've gotten at most a confused chuckle out of me.
In a world where "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" exists, it's so strange to me to think that people are so sensitive about fictional villains reading holy texts or destroying places of worship. If Christians can deal with something batshit as Ninja Resurrection or even just Evangelion, Muslims can deal with Dio reading a book and knocking down a couple buildings.

The whole jynx situation, its pure irony that people claim ignorance on Japan's part when its ignorant to discount Japan's culture around the influence of the character.
If the character was created today and done intentionally, it would be considered a trap to bait people into contradicting themselves.

There are two kinds of peoples: the ones that pretend to NOT be racist and the others who don't. Even the "racism politics" thing was initiated to separate and to ostracize people based on their racial opinions. Every single anti-racism policy has had a targeted ostracizing effect and only changed the socially accepted target of ostracism of the day. One day it's lepers, the other: white people. Ur point is moot.

@Onemanarmylol Lol I think the original commenter is making the point that is discredited in the video: I.e.: that the people criticizing the design of the Pokémon are hypocrites, because they are claiming Japan to be ignorant of racist US history while supposedly being ignorant of Japanese culture themselves. (In the video it was argued that this is irrelevant, because the main artistic intent of making an innocent and entertaining video game trumps other creative decisions in the face of choosing to ameliorate controversy). The second comment is really fucking bizarre. I might be wrong, but I think that they are attempting to make the argument that everyone is racist in some way and that people who say they aren’t are only claiming that they aren’t. Furthermore, I believe he is arguing that policies to enfranchise marginalized groups somehow have the effect of taking power away from the social majority. (I.e.: his is arguing that pro-civil rights rights policies are somehow anti-white). I may have completely misinterpreted him though, but if this is his argument I find it ridiculous.

This episode is and will forever be special to me. Last year in May was a special time for me watching anime abandon which is saying a lot, considering much of my time even before then had been special moments with AA. I had just moved to a new home and nothing is quite like setting up in a new location just soaking in the environment especially when indulging in a favorite past time.

That was one hell of an episode. You went into so much detail on everything from the basic stuff like story, animation and characters to the creation of the anime and how hard it was to the lack of women in the anime to even the controversy over one tiny shot in the anime. You even fit a bit of music ranting. Basically, everything I love about Anime Abandon in one episode.

colleen i won't lie, most people I've talked to about this just pretend as if the character in question was a girl all along, and I can't help but agree. It's a weird case of headcannon being more true than the source material.
Basically, we could have had a strong, female, gay character with a PRISON record, as the lead protagonist in a widely popular medium as far back as the early 80's. Imagine that.
Regarding "long run" I don't know exactly what you mean, but NOTHING and NO-ONE from part 6 can be considered "long run" now.

People constantly bring up this matter, but not a single person has ever produced concrete evidence for this claim. Unless you know something I don't (and I'd love to see it, since I love behind the scenes stuff), that's just unsubstantiated rumor.
      STONE OCEAN SPOILERS
Frankly, I don't think Jolyne's supposed to have a love interest at all, since not only is it noted that her bad experiences have made her a bit cynical about them, but also every instance of Anasui making a move on Jolyne is played for laughs, up until Cape Canaveral, and only because he offers to put his life on the line not just for Jolyne, but for the group (and especially Jotaro, y'know, to impress him). Jolyne acknowledges his effort because she's willing to hear him out if he truly does believe as strongly as he does, which isn't indicating that she's even interested in a relationship, just that she's seen that Anasui's serious.

I find it strange that the use of Islamic iconography is controversial. There is media across the world that is critical of Christianity and no one bats an eye, but portray a different religion with similar roots and suddenly it's a problem. You can depict as many church burnings as you like, but destroy a mosque and it's not okay? The Castlevania anime depicts Christian priests being murdered, churches being destroyed, their entire religion being proved a hollow lie and not a single complaint was lodged against it. I don't think that accidentally including a segment of the Quran in a frame of animation is something worth getting angry over. Islam is just a religion, one of many, that, like all religions, doesn't have a place in modern society. I understand where Araki was coming from, but honestly I don't think that insulting a religion should be the big deal that was made of it given the state of the modern world

That's why this OVA isn't really liked in the community. The studio behind it completely missed the point and made the story too dark/serious and the characters into cardboard cutouts. But at least the visuals are ok. On the other hand David Production did a perfect adaptation of the manga with atmosphere and characters intact. The series is self aware of it's bizarreness and uses it to it''s advantage. Should have skipped the OVA and just watched the show. If you liked Polnareff in the OVA you will LOVE him in the TV show.

I honestly prefer the OVA to the show... Hell, when I read the manga I found it good BUT DAMN was it padded ! And that's an issue neither Phantom Blood nor Battle Tendency had. And the atmosphere ? Didn't mind the change. If anything , it was tonally inconsistent and I found Araki's humor in Part 3 to be hit and miss (while Part 2 KNEW it was going to be zany and KNEW the right amount of humor to use). The OVA keeps the adventurous and gloomy side of the story, but considering how Part 3 relies a LOT on the consequences of the Jonathan/Dio feud it was for the best, I mean Part 1 was definitely no knee slapper.
My only reproaches ? 5 more episodes and a better Vanilla Ice fight... that's about it.
