    Something really worth bearing in mind when watching the Fist of the North Star movie is that it appears rushed due to it being a cut-down version of the TV series. Criticisms such as Raoh's change of heart at the end of the film are simply not a problem in the TV series, where they have a lot of screentime, but appear to come out of the blue in the movie.
    It's also essential that people realise the English dub was heavily altered by Carl Macek for a Western audience unfamiliar with the source material, removing any mentions of exactly *how* the different fighting styles work, etc. So in the English dub, people explode for no literally no explained reason. which can come across as strange or silly.
    Entire speeches have been re-written, changing characters' motivations and philosophies completely (Raoh gets the worst of this. Compare his speech in the temple with Ryuuken to the Japanese version and you'll see just how different). So a bit more research and mention of some of these facts in this review would have redressed some of the criticisms.
    However, as mentioned in the video, the actual voice acting of the dub is shockingly good. Ken's English voice actor not only does an excellent ATATATATATATATATATATA impression, but also does it faster than Akira Kamiya's original (and infinitely better than any of the Japanese voice actors who attempted to halfheartedly voice Ken in the various new versions).
    Come to think of it, a lot of 80s Streamline dubs were really good. They scripted and dubbed anime as though it were any other animated feature deserving of their best effort, whereas now it's just the same 5-10 American "anime voice actors" putting on forced anime voices and not really having to try because it's "only some anime". They approach it as "hey, I'm dubbing an anime!" rather than a serious animated feature, and it shows.
    Finally, some mention of just how ridiculously fluid the animation is would have been good. Seriously, there's a shot in the movie where Ken's boot lifts up and he turns around which looks smoother than real life.

      I have to agree, 80s dubbing has a stigma of being bad, but there a lot that were good and fun to watch. I think modern dubs need that flare of fun in a performance. Hell some of the best dubs today are in the field of comedy since dub actors let loose and have fun

      OtaKing77077 Beside the dubbing being so bad for fist of the north star. But even the music or the moves got altered.. Lol @ someone actually knowledgeable about 80s anime Otaking trying to reason with Bennett of all people. We're talking about a dude who reviewed the Devilman OVA thinking Devilman itself was "a product of 80s otaku with pent up rage wanting to murder everyone and get their revenge at the normies" not even knowing there was a manga. Someone who called Masami Obari the "Rob Liefeld of Japan" even after me & a friend nicely messaged him about why Obari is a technically great artist despite his odd style & offering examples of said technical skill.
      I'm amazed he even allowed himself to enjoy this, even with the cynical "it's good because it KNOWS it's dumb (except when it doesn't lol)" logic.

      I agree with Streamline dubs in general- they all seemed to actually care. Michael Mcconahie was probably their best talent. Golgo 13, Crying Freeman and the Lupin dubs are the best of their work (Oahu Tegoku's actor being an exception). I do love their work compared to all other dub companies.

    I love the Dynamics of Raoh and Kenshiro's relationship and the character development. How you really see what motivates both men, it took Kenishiro to lose Yulia and betrayed by his brother Shin to realize his destiny, and how the brutal ruthlessness of the world make Raoh realize his destiny. Both are saviors, Raoh is the dark savior destined to bring law and order by any means necessary, an anti-hero; Kenshiro is the savior of light, destined to bring the peace and fight for the weak and powerless. There can be no peace without law and order, but the law and order can not last without the peace.

    22:07 I've been giving Bennett's stuff a bit of a binge, and watching his Bubblegum Crash review reminded me of this. Because over there Bennett talked about how much he liked that the Knight Sabers had essentially moved on with their careers and stopped being superheroes while violent terrorists are going around murdering people. Meanwhile Kenshiro here is selfish because he wants to save Yuria, and Superman and Spider-Man's philosophies should be condemned.
    So let me just say that this might be the most hateful, disingenuous, hypocritical thing Bennett has ever said.
    For one thing, the argument makes no sense. Kenshiro is selfish for wanting to go after Shin because Shin has Yuria and Yuria technically isn't in any immediate danger. This is while Bennett knows that if Kenshiro heard of some innocent woman being held against her will by some terrorist, Ken would go in and save her regardless of any personal connection. Bennett is essentially punishing Yuria for her connection to Kenshiro.
    Secondly, Shin is a violent tyrant going around killing people, stealing their property and subjugating any survivors. Kenshiro would have had to go fight him anyway. Why is it bad that he's killing two birds with one stone and rescuing someone at the same time?
    Thirdly, why is it selfish for Kenshiro to want to save a living, breathing human being that he wants to share his life with, but it's admirable for the Knight Sabers to ignore people dying solely because they' want to focus on their careers? Especially when Kenshiro is still saving people at the same time? A person's career is more important their loved one? Are you high?
    Fourthly, people are not machines. They need down time, rest, a healthy social life, connections to normal people and other things to stay mentally healthy. There have been countless stories examining how unhealthy it is for a hero to be on call 24/7 and the kind of disconnect it can lead. Bennett is essentially condemning every doctor, first responder, firefighter, police officer and soldier as selfish if they have loved ones in their lives.
    Maybe his thought process has changed since he's getting married now, but this whole logic chain he presents here is just . . . vile.

    • @barachiel212
      @barachiel212 3 роки тому +2

      @Paxchi My reply is pretty late, but I wanted to agree with you. That entire rant missed the entire point of superheroes being people, and condemning them for trying to have a life is just repugnant.
      I'm also re-binging Bennet now (know the show has had something of a soft reboot, since he married and moved, but haven't gotten that far). But having gone back to the beginning and watched forward after some time off, I was struck with the realization that the Bennet of this era... is the very definition of an edgy hipster. He throws out dissenting views , left right and sideways, typically against whatever is popular (see his rants about vampires and Superheroes having a life), all the while bemoaning how the good old days will never come again, and how anime has "sold out" and become too mainstream.
      Fortunately, this side only really comes out on occassion, and his overall analysis are good, and he makes some excellent points. In his more edgy hot takes, its nice to see another perspective, as even then, he's usually at least thoughtful and well-spoken. He's only had a handful of moments where I'd actually want to call him out on his bullshit (this little screed being one of them). Overall, though, I still like him, and am looking forward to see how this show has evolved in my five-year-absence.

      What Spidermans school of thought is he even condemning? "With great power comes great responsibility" because what he was saying would seem to agree with that,
      Kenshiro is a powerful person who can change the world for the better, this guy wants him to throw his selfish desires to the wayside and do what's best for the world.
      That sounds like it would 100% AGREE with "with great power comes great responsibility" so that can't be what he was talking about so I ask again, what is Spidermans school of thought in this giys eyes?

    From what I understand, the reason why the more violent scenes are VHS quality is because it was purposely done so for the censors to show it in theaters. Supposedly, the original uncensored violent scenes did exist but is now lost forever thanks to a building fire that housed those scenes. The whole movie and ending felt rushed and made no sense in some scenes is because it's basically the first 3 acts of the manga/anime put together in one movie.

    I have read he full Fist of the North Star manga, and i will say...
    This manga has more Retcons, Nonsense and "Author Forgot" than Naruto.
    It has even more FEEEEEEEEEEEEEELS than Naruto.
    Most of FotNS good characters were made just to die, so Kenshiro would get a powerup from his FEELS.
    Hell, at the end it's revealed that Hokuto Shinken (Kenshiro's battle style) takes it's power from FEELS towards mother.
    Even Main Villain after Raoh (Who's a Raoh's brother - Kaioh (No, Not Kaioh from Dragon Ball Z)) has his reasons because of FEELS towards his mother.
    DAMN! Even Kenshiro's ULTIMATE Technique - Musou Tensei, gets his power from FEELS towards his dead comrades.
    Fist of the North Star, in its 27 volumes has more Feels and Out-of-Continuity moments than all 72 Volumes of Naruto.
    But, at least, Fist of the North Star's story arcs aren't dragged on.

    • @damiensuluai8351
      @damiensuluai8351 7 років тому +14

      Agreed. Way I see it, Hokuto no Ken goes overboard in a way that makes it work. It can be melodramatic, comical, stupid, and gruesome, but it feels like everything has a meaning, intentional or not. Plus, the feels are what give Hokuto no Ken its identity. It's a lot more subtle than most manga, yet they hit just at the right time. It's by no means perfect, but what works for it highly overshadows the negatives.

    • @MasterCode86
      @MasterCode86 7 років тому +1

      musou tensei works by deatching one's self from feels to draw in souls to use techniques from, everything else is pretty much spot on. But that, was the aesthetic of the 80's -strong emotions, all the time-

    • @damiensuluai8351
      @damiensuluai8351 7 років тому +6

      That's honestly a big problem with a bunch of manga/anime nowadays. When their stories go for feels, it doesn't advance plot or character, it acts merely as a crutch for interest.
      Naruto, Akame Ga Kill, Inuyasha, Bleach, One Piece, all of these have plentiful cases where a feels moment is unwarranted, which makes us annoyed rather than invested. Naruto? Sakura having feels at the wrong place at the wrong time towards the wrong person. Akame Ga Kill? It always goes for some sort of shock value that makes us forcefully root rather than naturally so. Inuyasha? Kagome being a total bitch despite being the supposed main heroine and there's a lot of scenes where we are supposed to care for her, but can't because of her attitude. Bleach and One Piece? Honestly, too many characters syndrome. When they do focus, they can get it right, such as with Whitebeard and even Ichigo, but the feels usually get cluttered by millions of others who have their own feels moments and take away from the big ones.
      Now, I'm not some manga hipster, as I do love some modern ones such as Kongou Banchou. Hell, I even liked Naruto....in its first series. Shippuden in its later seasons felt like an honest to god backstab for me. Why? Well, when you build up your main character as a loner child that pushes on in the face of adversity despite the fact that he's cursed with fate and succeeds through his warmth and perseverance as a human then turn him into a friggin messiah that was always destined to save the world....yeah, it's a little cheap to say the least.
      Maybe it was gratifying for other fans, but to me, it doesn't work. Heroes that are able to accept the burdens placed upon their shoulders and work through or around them are admirable in my eyes. Naruto was exactly that for a long time, but when Shippuden altered his background, it felt more like everything was laid out for him and he was going through the motions.
      Before anyone calls me a hypocrite, I am fully aware that Kenshiro, perhaps my favorite manga character, is a messiah-esque character, but the way his role plays out is much different and rarely feels forced. Thing is, he is cursed to have chaos follow him wherever he goes, but that's it. We don't get a hoaky "He'll save the world some day!" prophecy, but that tragedy will always be a part of him. In turn, that's what makes him more compelling when he actively tries to help people, especially when chaos is now everywhere. Furthermore, he's a naturally kind person, stoic, and despite being tied to a certain fate and has accepted its responsibilities, he's helped countless while defying fate as well. For instance, when he chose to save Fudoh rather than see Yuria first. He states that the tears of a child are the same as the Last Nanto General's, showcasing his compassion and maturity. He won't build his legacy on the tears and blood of others, which is fascinating and truly remarkable of a person. Plus, he can abandon his loving nature and become a harbinger of death when the time calls for it without hesiation.
      Another good example where the messiah trope was used effectively? Aang. I shouldn't have to explain this one since I'm certain Avatar is quite well-known, even if it isn't an actual anime.
      The only time I've seen Naruto decide his own destiny post-Shippuden was when he wanted to save Sasuke, which is a good start, but the execution made him out to be more of a child. He had a panic attack when meeting him again, gave the guy way too many chances after he had committed numerous crimes, and his motivations flopped left and right.

      Oh, my bad. But, yeah, I do agree with you, the only reason the manga went as long as it did was because of Shonen's push of it. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that it continued and that the second arc was as good as it was, but it's truly a shame that the authors didn't have an exact clue where to go since they only planned one story.

      This is especially grating since so much of the backlash against Akira an GOTFF was not that he didn't like something they liked, but his points were either completely misinformed, or flat out lies.
      Points like "Akira never reveals what the rebels are rebelling against" and "Tetsuo is an amoeba?" are 1: explained in a newscast at the beginning of the movie and 2: The amoeba speech is a METAPHOR and Tetsuo is not actually a single celled organism. People have made full videos debunking points he made in both of these movies and he still refuses to acknowledge that people defending these movies have valid points against him.

    You should have seen the reaction of French parents to have Fist of The North Star series broadcasted to childrens in the middle of the afternoon. Imagine putting this in the middle of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse"....that was a cataclysmic wave back then and a huge price for misunderstanding the place of mangas in Japanese society. To add on top of it, French voice doublers decided to pour some water into the wine and that resulted in the funniest doublages ever on the French TV (the abused the terms of Hokuto (homophone to "knife") and Nanto (homophone to "coat") to put jokes like "Swiss-Knife Attack" or "Rabbit Furcoat Attack"....

    It's called Battojutsu, Iaijutsu or the most recent name for it Iaido. Essentially the art of a single strike.
    Whichever name floats you're boat really.
    I generally refer to the first two been the older names so they have more to do with combat than Iaido does. As Iaido is more "practice" orientated like with Kendo, Judo, than with the more combat orientated versions been Kenjutsu and Jujutsu which back in the old days were used for actual fighting where as the "do" versions are more tournament based.

      It can be kinda hard to define what is or is not but its usually referring to a developed move especially intent on killing the target with no moves preceding it or following it.
      Doesn't mean there hasn't been techniques used before it or after it in a fight its just these moves are designed to be one hit one kill type move where as others might be a 5/10/20 move set where any one move in the set might get through and wound or kill the target.
      If you want a good understanding watching anything samurai orientated at some point in the show should have this sort of move in it somewhere its like western's and the quickdraw seen.

      Probably the part where Spiderman actually ignores "with great power comes great responsibility" multiple times for his own selfish needs and refuses to grow as a character and take responsibility for his bad choices. Hell, even comic book writers have pointed out what horrible decisions he's made and Spiderman would probably cringe at how he was looking back if the writers would let Spiderman age and mature before quickly hitting the reset button.

      ***** that's not technically a school of thought, that's a character flaw.

      David Spring It's still what Spiderman actually believes: "My needs are more important than anyone else's." "I don't need to take responsibility for my choices." With great power comes great responsibility sounds good, but it's not the school of thought Spiderman actually believes in.

      Wrath's Attack fist of the north star has 89 episodes, they took a two week break from broadcasting, and then made fist of the north star 2 with another 43 episodes. there are also various sequels, prequels, OVAs, and spin-offs. fist of the north star franchise has grossed over a trillion yen in japan and one of the most famous anime/manga for over 30 years

      Wrath's Attack first 26 episodes were dubbed back in the 80's, but sadly no more. a company has recently re-released the entire series on dvd boxset. i own the singapore boxset of OVA's which also has english subtitles. fist of the north star is very famous in japan, you will see lots of parodies and references in popular anime, and many videogames have been released for fist of the north star

      Wrath's Attack HnK games have been made for more than 25 years, starting with the master system. the PSX game follows the story of the anime, but the best game is a 2D VS fighter game simply called Hokuto No Ken on the sega/sammy atomiswave

      +theycallmejpj: I wish I knew how to play import PlayStation 2 games, because I would buy the 2007 Japanese PS2 console port of the Sega/Arc System Works fighting game up in a heartbeat if I could.

    Personally, I really dig the scenes when the resolution shifts. Feels kind of trippy and artsy. Gives the scenes a kind of cool music video aesthetic. I know it's not intentional, but it works.

    In Kung Fu movies it means to wound your opponent to the point he can not practice Kung Fu anymore and leave them a cripple. Some hit all the vital pressure points, some cut or wound the tendons and ligaments to the point of no repair. In Vietnamese dubbed Kung Fu movies it's called phé võ( phé sounds like fay in your falsetto voice, means sacrifice as in remove or destroy, võ is martial arts) I think that's how it's spelled. Vietnamese and chinese have words that sound very similar like this one but in Chinese it would be gung Fu so it would be something like fay gung fu. You can also do it to yourself as a punishment. Your teacher can do it if you broke clan rules like teaching to outsiders or betraying the clan. It's like a mercy to your opponent because you don't want to kill them for whatever reason. Sometimes out of respect because he/she was your student but most of the time it's because you want to show strength and honor in mercy.
