And nobody's even gonna point out that White Jungle shouldn't be revisitable, since the island blows up in SA2.
LMAOOOO Hoooly crap you're right.
To be fair, it's not like the island's gone though, you could revisit Prison Island in ShTH. That stage looked very deteriorated/polluted, but still had a lot of forestry.
@@afish7886 Island's not gone, no, but the chances of White Jungle being completely intact if not burnt to a crisp is just about 0. The area you explore in Shadow the Hedgehog is only still around because it's implied to be a deep underground area, sealed away and forgotten about.
@@Samevi Didn't know, thanks for explaining. Though I don't believe everything on the surface is gone since some of those tree trunks were humongous- imo lost opportunity since everything could be coated in ash, adding a new meaning to the stage name or something. I don't know, it's fanfic, could be possible or made interesting but I'm thinking too much about it

Ladies and Gentlemen. This is the Hunt Down The Freeman of Sonic.
It's *Hunt Down The Eggman.*
Nah, Hunt Down the Exiled would be more accurate.

11:40 There's a lock-on feature in Omens?! What the hell. Wish the game had told me, then I might've actually progressed past that dumb plane-worm boss.
Plane worm boss only spawns in your FOV
Oh damn, you found an Alaskan Bullworm?
This was really entertaining, I hope you will do more of these critiques for the games you play.
honestly i’m glad that i could find a video that *wasn’t* just full of the controversy around the game. i know what that entails but i’m trying to find details on the game
and here’s what i like about this video: you’re talking about what it is that you’re playing and what you think about it. it’s so simple, but it’s such a big deal for me when i’ve had moments looking for game reviews that don’t even get to the main point (i.e. how the game feels/plays and etc)
that aside ya earned a sub
This is a pretty well put together video that goes over a lot of points and subjects most people cannot be bothered to put any detail in.
Quick tip: Unless an Infinity Engine fangame has specified controller use is ideal, NEVER play an Infinity Engine game with controller. The original Infinity Engine was designed to be played on keyboard and mouse, controlling sonic like a missile with a mouse guided camera in a more traditional FPS sense instead of a platforming sense.
One of Omen's biggest flaws was the fact that it did not properly convey the fact that it was not properly optimized for controller. The default Infinity Engine controller support was functional at best and the Omens team did not do enough to fix this issue. But because the game does not properly tell this to the player, the player is more likely to play with controller and thus will get a much worse play experience.
The entire game was designed with the original Infinity Engine creators vision in mind. Oban wanted to create a Sonic x Devil May Cry fangame where dashing from place to place using the homing attack and air boosting with mouse centric camera controls and I think you began to see that the more you played. Its no surprise that people enjoy the stages where this isn't the case as most of the time those stages are basic boost styled stages where boosting and basic platforming are the main focuses and that most peoples least favorite stages are the ones that require more masterful control over the homing attack and camera functionality to bend the level to their will.
At it's core, Omens is NOT a Boost game. The Boost is present and is a mechanic but it functions more like an extension of Sonic's mobility rather than the focus of it. You'll probably notice that a lot of areas where you're free to boost as you please has a lot of Boost energy capsules. That is because the Boost energy drains much faster in Infinity Engine than it does in traditional Sonic games. It's NOT meant to be your main mode of traversal. Using the boost to maneuver around in mid air, pivot and change directions on the spot while on the ground and gaining bursts of speed in small intervals makes the levels flow significantly better. But again, the game does a terrible job at teaching this fact to the player.
I've worked with the Infinity Engine for 4 years on Infinity+ and when this game came out and everyone was trashing on it I came up with a few theories as to why and this video mixed with a few others helps prove my theory correct. Omens has too high of a skill floor and expects the player to understand more about the quirks of the Infinity Engine than what is reasonable. The game itself can be super fun 70% of the time if you know what you're doing and how to play but the game does very little to teach you what 'how to play' means in this context. Overlapping mechanical controls and level design is important in platformers and if the player cannot grasp the main functions of the game then the level design will feel good to play.
Side note: United Railroad is one of my favorite stages to Speedrun as Sonic yet i can't go through the internal parts of the train without getting hit. I do think the stage has some repetition which makes it longer than it needs to be and that internal part of the train is not fun lol but i enjoy the overall stage regardless.
Interesting read. I didn't know Oban wanted to have the game play stylishly similar to DMC.
Kinda funny too considering my background in playing tons of DMC. Chaining homing attacks with boosting feels good once you get it going but I really feel as if this game should have lowered the skill floor (like you said). Either that or SPECIFICALLY STATE that this game will be hard towards the end. Because the beginning levels themselves follow a typical boost/platforming formula up until the later stages.
This kind of explains why I enjoyed Omens as much as I did, I knew what to expect from both the framework the game is built on (I tried out the I+ Colorful Combat demo beforehand) and the game itself.
The game is still pretty unfair to the player though.
Thank you for making an honest and mostly neutral take on the game. I mostly avoided videos on this because I knew most of them came out of a place of blind hatred due to it having a Patreon (despite most fan projects having one).
I personally enjoyed most of the game, but I can see a lot of the problems the game has. I enjoyed Shadow's last stage a lot for using all of his Chaos powers in the level design, and I like that it implements all 4 of them. It does warn you about them in a subtle way too with the colored arrows, but it is true that you won't expect the moving platforms on your first try because you'll be boosting right into them. I also didn't really enjoy the train ending part because of all of the randomly placed obstacles but I enjoyed my journey towards the train a lot.
I do believe the game was rushed towards the end, though I do not know why, hence why the final stages and the final boss are really unpolished compared to the previous chapters. Still, what Sonic Show's full argument is, for the sake of neutrality, has always been "a full 3D game that is on the level of Sonic Omens' polish in terms of gameplay, cutscenes and music", which I believe Roboblast 2 doesn't fall into because of the lack of cutscenes and voice acting (even if the voice acting isn't all that great).
All in all, I enjoyed my time with Omens, despite its flaws, and I enjoyed your video and your perspective. It isn't the best but to be quite honest, I'd rather replay most of Omens' stages over replaying Colors or vanilla Forces (some of the mods look great though). I don't think the team is better than Sonic Team and that "Sega should hire this man" or anything, but when it comes to boost Sonic, I guess I just don't really like Colors and Forces, haha.
I honestly completely agree with this comment omens has cons but also pros making it above some sonic games like boom,06,forces,and colors. If the voice acting was better I may of liked it more.
To me they're slightly better then team sonic "slightly" in games(based on omens as it's their only game I played) but team as outside games it's not better then sonic team from my experience they're quiet about all of it(probably sleep idk) so mainly community has been helping me out when I get into trouble.
It's not just that they have a Patreon, it's that most of Omens is stolen assets made by other fans. So them making money for something that's mostly plagiarized is messed up

I'm sure the guy who wrote that line thinks sonic saying "no copyright law in the universe is going to stop me" is peak sonic.

FINALLY
A REVIEW THAT'S JUST HONEST AND DOESN'T DICKRIDE / TRASH THE GAME DUE TO IT'S HISTORY
I mean this game is still an awful experience drama aside. The bugs it has are more than enough to make the game awful, and the bosses being poorly designed(mostly) are just blargh.
@@brawler5760 Yea, I found it quite decent but everyone made it out to be fucking terrible and unplayable OR the best game of all time
Is it really worth checking out Sonic Almonds in the long run
im so glad someone mentioned the camera issues with how you constantly have to jump your thumb from face buttons to right stick, and how things have to be on screen for you to homing attack them. it felt like talking into a void when nobody else seemed to care about that like its not an issue.
tho i wanna say that i found turning also too sensitive i guess. it feels too weird for me, i cant quite get the hang of it for whatever reason, but also im so glad i realised i can lock onto bosses through a youtube video...
I grew up partially playing all kinds of Sonic fan games on the family computer. So Sonic Omens should be right up my alley. But my opinion of Omens was ruined as the first time I heard it it was described as “the best looking Sonic game”. Immediately I knew the fandom was out of control so I checked it out. And nope, it looks great for a fan game but that’s it. I eventually had no desire to play it since it was nothing but drama.
After your critique I think it’s finally time for me to give it a shot. It looks super fun despite the terrible unfriendly level design and glitches. I’m honestly used to it. I’m going to treat it like a fun fan game. Like everyone should. Not the messiah of Sonic games.
Edit: I quit on the second boss. That wasn't worth my time.
LOL
Did not expect that toxic SonicTuber to turn up here but I'm glad people are responding to his inane nonsense.
I thought he just said bad takes here and there. In fact I only stumbled across him when I heard about him and his factual claim on Sonic Omens.
Is there something that I'm missing? I didn't realize that a lot of people disliked him.
@@ChaserTech He likes to flaunt and inflate his ego in every video he makes.
@@brawler5760 Lol that's it? Eh I've heard and seen worse but I could understand people getting annoyed with that really fast.
@@ChaserTech There's more to it. So his channel used to be a homely podcast with a small crew of friends which eventually died down.
He randomly swooped and started uploading his super clickbaity stuff and already had an ego when he was'nt involved in the channel in the first place.
Claiming he was sorta saviour when he was a random guy who came outta nowhere. I told him I'd rather let the channel die in peace than this insufferable content.
I recall he said something on Twitter and then other members of the old crew came out of the woodwork to say "I'm not connected with the channel and its viewpoints and I don't approve of this guy and his content" . His answer naturally was a video addressing how much good and views he brought to the channel completely missing the point of how it used to be a tightknit community. (All the comments on the video was like you'll never understand why we valued the podcast since he basically stepped all over it in that video) I'd just respect him a bit more if he built up his own following in the trenches of a new channel from the start instead of immediately coming in with an ego for no reason.

Great video, one thing you could've talked about though would probably be the story, but that's fine.

Honestly, it's not even worth talking about the history of this fangame.
@@talesxavier5752 I wasn't talking about the history, I meant the plot
I'm surprised he didn't tbh
For the homing attack issue is actually not the target that's the problem.
The target is in sync with the camera but you can still homing attack something else if you're holding the direction to whatever else you're trying to homing attack even though it's not targeted.
Press it without any direction it will auto Target whatever it is that the target indicator is on
I know absolutely NOTHING about this game or it’s drama. This random video in my feed is all I’ve heard and seen. And regardless of all this all I can genuinely say is: It amazes me to see what a fan base can do. It may not be the best game or anything, but wow. It’s impressive to see fans make something like this.
Sonic Almonds
I originally didn't want to hate this game, really I wanted it to be good. Graphics are beautiful and it presented itself like an official game, other than the really bad cutscenes. But after learning about the Patreon and realizing just how trash the level design is, how often you run out of boost, numerous glitches, and I could keep going on, it's clear that the devs don't understand Sonic, any of it, and they tried to just do a ton of fanservice in story, which is pretty lame too, I will say.
The only plus of this game to me is the music, and graphical fidelity overall is pretty good. Super disappointed.
This game looks horribly generic, and I can never understand why people like the art style. Also the main developer, BOLT, literally said at some point that after 1998, Sonic went to shit.
@@brawler5760 It's weird for him to say that because SA1 is relatively tame and light hearted compared to Omens tryhard "I wanna be a mid 2000s game" story
@@maude7420 Yeah, as someone who personally felt that SA2 was the pinnacle of Sonic, I still think that Omens should have approached boosting more like Sonic Generations or Unleashed. No wonder the project basically fell, the dev didn't even like the Boost System then.
About the boost I figured they were trying to make you use boost the least often possible. So you really should use boost for air boosting and gaining speed again.
Even the music I didn't find all that great. It all sounds a bit samey and repetitive to me (and one of them is actually a remix of a song from the cars 2 videogame)
Yeah, the statement that this game forces you to die atleast once in later levels is very accurate, I have and WILL NEVER S rank this game just because I can't have the reaction time or memory to handle these levels entirely.
(I will say the final boss while SO. FUCKING. ANNOYING. AND. VAGUE. Once I mastered his attacks he is actually really fun to beat up, especially phase 2 the music just kicked a feeling like it's a battle of generations)
7:15 to be honest, that sounds pretty good
im sorry but taking a shot at the sonic show just fucking made me burst into laughter i mean ur completely right his opinion is shit but holy shit i wasent expecting that
Sonic GT clears this game so easily. I remember constantly playing the same levels over and over just to get best time, and having a lot of fun with the physics, game play, and level designs. It wasn't perfect, but definitely clears this without question.
Other then (at least when it first released, i got 100% before it got updates so I have no idea if they fixed them) the often horrid bosses, GT has been the best experience I've had with a fangame that I can think of. I almost never repeatedly replay levels in Sonic games, and I was having so much fun that I got all the unlocks(before any guides or anything so had to search for them) and then kept playing the levels messing around with all the different characters and trying to get faster times. Highly recommend trying it, super fun
@@th3bear01 funny that, I've noticed how difficult it really is to make a decent 3D Sonic boss.
I don't like sonic GT. Because in my opinion their graphics way much worse than omens and unnecessary big stages.
I think steering feels pretty loose
It's mainly because of the camera.
Ex: in Sonic Adventure 2 when you're on Green Forest or White jungle you're holding up the character is moving in the center of that slope whereas in this game you got to keep steering left and right to keep that balance before you fly off the screen
I am curious how this game is processing on your computer I have never gotten the bugs you got in the vid... And I speed run this game. That floating number point on different cpu goes crazy.
The engine was infinity engine which means ouroboros studio did basically ALL the bad stuff and the good stuff was made by the creator of infinity engine
Well, I have only seen videos of this game and they all look super good, but of course never played it so I don’t know how it controlled, but thank you for showing issues with the game and showing fair critiquing, I just hope this was not on a super outdated version. Some others are just outright trashing everything about the game and I wonder if it is because of that one person who is probably just carrying out a vendetta against the developer.
I just will never understand why they made these voice actors who are *clearly* trying to sound like the English voice cast not speak in their native language. It would've made the voice acting SO much more tolerable. They have the vocal registers for these characters don't try to force them to try to believably speak a language they aren't as well versed in. It's such a simple fix that should have been ironed out in the conceptual stages

My favorite part is Sonics voice acting, because they got a Jason Griffith sound-alike, but then his direction is pretty much all of the things Jason was criticized for anyway.
Exactly, all Sonic voice actors had a pretty rough start, but everyone improved a lot overtime
But Omens got a Jason copy from 06, where he barely changed his tone and sounded silly, not the serious and caring Jason from Unleashed and Black Knight
That's like if they wanted Ryan impression, but made him sound like his forced and exaggerated voice from SA1
Sonic Omens as a fangame looks really polished at first glance but once you keep on playing you'll start noticing problems that don't seem much at first but keep on piling... and piling... and piling... and piling... you get the picture.
At the end of the game you'll start questioning why you're even playing Sonic Omens.
Hey guys have any of you watch the whole video of sonic show and do any of you take this man serious that is not what sonic show said 😂 that sonic omens is better than other title and have is complain this guys complains are so dumb

What? It immediately looks like one of a billion Infinity engine asset flips, so you expect something completely unplayable with zero story and unfit level design, 3 levels and zero bosses. And in the end you get a pretty competent whole package 3D fangame arguably above levels of Dark Age official ones. Def above Free Riders in nearly all aspects, going above Black Knight in many too. Absolutely unheard of.
Just like fallout frontier.
By far the worst mistake Omens makes is that it used the name "Moldy Jungle" instead of the obviously superior "Fungal Jungle"

Since you put Sonic Show's "argument" in this video, I wanna say:
Do you want to know why he kept insisting that this game is "polished and that's a fact"?
It's because, get this, he was lucky enough not to get any glitches in his playthrough.
Yes, that's his argument, we mocked the people who said this shit when Colors Ultimate came out, and I'm pretty sure he did the same thing too, so why are we okay with using this lousy excuse of an "argument" now?

I've had glitches ruin a lot of S rank runs that I did too...
@@ChaserTech I can't even begin to imagine how much torture you've subjected yourself to by S ranking every stage, just to be as fair as possible to this game.

I wonder if maybe he just didn't notice any. Really weird that he didn't address any at all
@@ChaserTech You may not have an answer for what I am about to ask regarding fan games. But for fans and/or those wanting to test their skills with sonic styled games, what engine do you think would be IDEAL for a sonic adventure 2, that's right I said TWO because I think it has the better engine, styled fan-game that does NOT have the boost formula? It would also be good if this engine had mechanics for instant turning, and was more momentum based like the sonic fangame: Sonic Utopia, but allows for a implementation of skills (mainly chaos skills like shadow) to be used?
I have a neat idea for a fan game using characters from the sonic universe, but I want it to be adventure-esc but new in some different ways. And I think a possible solution to keep some fans at bay (the boost focused ones) would to point out this fan game does NOT involve sonic AND/OR shadow and is set in a alternate time-line of canon around a similar time of the retro era sonic games (SA1-Heros according to generations) prior to unleashed pre-boost. I believe this would allow for different expectations (hopefully) by being lower than usual and would be advertised as a platformer styled game, so people would have their guard down a bit and not too critical on it.
It would also for some non-canon things to pass the game norms of how everyone behaves. Though I feel humbling overblown characters, especially the females, would not sit well with many this day and age. But do want to see a fan-game expanded beyond sonic. Shadow, eggman, knuckles, and tails are so far the only to have a spin off game, and I would like to see at the very least more fan games that give sonic (and by extension shadow) a break out of the lime light.
But to do that would need help from like: the bare minimum of professional programmers with spare time to kill [else need a whole dozen of armature coders], modelers, sound producers [including music], texturing, and voice actors, which could get expensive [which is why I could go the adventure 1 route and have so few characters to not need so many VAs]. And that takes a LOT of money, and would take under the shortest time with consistent work effort 10 years, with only 4 being possible if I somehow get like an entire community working with me to do an entire company's work.
This video LITERALLY describes my experience about Omens,

If I can recall, The Sonic Show's excuse for Sonic Roboblast 2 not being the most polished 3d fangame (which has been developed and updated since the late 90's) is that he argues it is a 2d game. Sure, it is built upon the Doom engine, with early Doom games actually being 2d, but it has less constraints than Doom that makes it more of a proper 3d game, such as proper camera controls for vertical visibility and being able to be in the same area in different elevations (like being on top of or underneath a bridge).
Edit: I would like to correct my error that the Doom engine was in 2d. Not only was this comment partially wrong, but it puts even more emphasis that SRB2 is a 3d game

But I could be wrong!
I want to actually take a moment to congratulate you for keeping the video to be about the game itself and being critical of both the game and the people criticizing the game. If we actually want projects like Omens or people like Ouroboros Team to improve, we need to actually improve ourselves as a community in what/how we communicate. Almost everything you mention is dedicated to the game, which is what matters.
I personally think the problem isn't "they asked for money" anymore, but how the game is flawed in a lot of its technical elements despite having way more support than other fan projects out there. So i think you made the best video so far in regards to what needs to be discussed at this point, THE GAME ITSELF.
I actually went back and revised a lot of my script because I felt like I was being too negative against Sonic Omens towards the later half of the video, which took me an extra few days. I'm glad to know that I did the right thing and talked about it in a critical lens instead of hopping on the bandwagon.
@@ChaserTech I wouldn't even say that, because you're proving a tangible way where you were coming from, and even explain it.
There's a big difference between "This is garbage" which is the common thing, and "This hitbox is too big, these sections can only be solved when you already know the answer, i don't think this mechanic was properly implemented, and this AI is too fast for a response".
To the point where even if someone didn't agree with everything you say, they understand the thought process of those opinions, which i think is what's important in essays/reviews.
I’m glad this video is critical but isn’t someone yelling “THIS IS GARBAGE!” again and again
Here's a tidbit by someone who "tried" to get all red rings in the game: you can't actually do it with only the final product. The game's so unpolished that one red ring in Area 99 doesn't show up at all in the final game. You have to play the earlier build to collect it and then transfer the save to the final build. That's not mentioning the fact that the game cannot remember that you collected all red rings in a stage if you decide to play said stage again without recollecting the red rings.
And the kicker? The final extra that you should have unlocked by collecting every red rings in the game (the reward you get for going through all that pain)... can't be unlocked!! The game will always count 65 red rings but never the 75 needed. All the devs have to say to this is "It's going to be fixed later", like wtf... why didn't you test that all that worked before releasing the game? Wasn't there at least one volunteer that could have tested to see if the red rings mechanic works properly..? That sounds like laziness to fix a game they know is already buggy and will be defended by rabid fanboys. I don't remember any other sonic fangame that failed this miserably at polishing and then have its fans pretend it is the "most" polished.
Probably because they released the game over and over and over and this is just the first time they've released the entire game, and future releases are likely focused more on updates. It's a fan game so there's no reason to fix it before releasing it. You're the beta tester. lol
@@Axxidous ikr the hell do they expect out of non profit fangame most of the fanbase can't even play cause it's too graphically intensive, made by an entirely russian team and is plagued by controversies. It was painful hearing The Sonic Show doubling down on being wrong, not even because the game isn't "the best and most polished," but because he said those were objective facts when obtaining any kind of objective measurement of qualities like that is difficult if not impossible. It's an arrogant, unlearned way to present his opinion and sours the whole discourse surrounding this game which is already a minefield. That out of the way though, great vid Chaser. The metarex section was hilarious. Hope you do more like this on other games of interest.
This was the main reason why I even included his quote.
He presented as a fact and it was the main factor why I even hinted at him in the first place, especially since he doubled down with it with his defense against the controversy. Otherwise I would have left him out of it.

Thank you. Finally a honest review of sonic omens. A review that takes up the good and the bad and doesn’t strictly praise or bash the game. A review that ignore the drama and focus on the product.
About the metal enemies in the light speed rant. Didn't sonic unleashed give some enemies reaction animations? Like they notice you and then after a moment they attack? Maybe I'm insane, but that would possibly make that section bearable bc it would actually give you time to charge it up
Yeah they did.
The enemies would do a gesture indicating that they spotted you. Then they would slowly run up to you to attack. The Metarex gives you no time at all to charge light speed attack so you have to know before hand and boost away from them just to charge it.
i ended up unsubbing from The Sonic Show. He strokes his ego in every video. I actually watched his Omens video, and it was just stupid. I could honestly care less about the drama. But saying that this was the best most polished fan game is the most stupidest take ever.
Edit: Since some of you can’t see the reason I unsubbed. Lemme check you real quick. His Omens video was a piss poor example of an opinion. He stated things as facts that were not true. The game is NOT polished. He himself stated, when he played the game he did not have a single bug or anything in it. I have played it multiple times myself and I have experienced bug after bug. Sonic might go through a wall or I’d have to restart cuz I got stuck on a platform and can’t move. OR IN THE LAST TAILS LEVEL THE FREAKIN DOOR WONT OPEN AFTER YOU HIT ALL THE SWITCHES MAKING YOU RESTART THAT GOD FORSAKEN LEVEL OVER AND OVER TIL IT DECIDES TO WORK. OR THE PART LITERALLY RIGHT BEFORE EMBER WHERE YOU GOTTA KILL THE METAREX TO GET OUT OF THE AREA BUT IT DONT DISAPPEAR WHEN YOU KILL THE LAST ONE AND YOU GOTTA RESTART THE ENTIRE LEVEL. There are a bunch of videos showcasing bugs in the game. Most polished fan game my ass.
Not only that. He called Spark the Electric Jester a fan game of Sonic. BRO THAT IS AN IP! It’s not a fan game! Did he correct himself? Not to my knowledge. And I know he’s been called out on it cuz It’s Ya Mans Will made a video on it.

Splash dash goes into depth about the development history of this game and I like that video as much as this one. Very well done! Although, in my opinion, the Exiled’s voice acting is the most tolerable to listen to.
On an unrelated note, the devs seem to have pretty much copied levels from Ori and the Blind Forest and Will of the Wisps. Tree Palace and Waterfall Chase are just worse versions of Ginso Tree(the entire thing), and Weeping Rift is literally just Weeping Ridge but even worse. It has the same color palette, the same general tone, the same instakill lasers and fire I’ve always hated, and the bird at some point in Weeping Rift looks like Kuro from Blind Forest.

Gotta agree with you, GT was one of the first 3d sonic fangames i've played and it set such a high bar that i keep feeling underwhelmed when trying out new fangames. the ONLY real issue that GT has is that all the bosses suck (i spent over an HOUR on the city level, all because of the boss (this was in the first real release, and i know that they supposedly made it better)) The movement and stage design is so fluid that you can reach insane speeds and for about the first time ever in a sonic game the core gameplay was fun enough i went back and replayed most of the levels over and over, even unlocked everything back when it first released so i had to find the medals without help. The game that the team is making now is looking to be really great too! newest demo is really fun, alot of what made GT so fun is already there, although it can be pretty buggy but it was thrown together in a few weeks to have something for SAGE. I swear people are praising this game like it’s god’s game and they’re aware of the controversy of the game. Yet STILL THEY PRAISE IT
So just by watching this alone it feels like the game either wants you to go stupid fast or dead ass slow with no in between and when you do decide to do what the game asks you will just be punished anyway. It’s like a dysfunctional parent that if you do what is being asked of you, your just gonna be smacked up later anyway.
That metarex part also goes against most of the official sonic enemy patterns as most of sonics enemies are stationary however if they do move they aren’t bolting right at you they come at you in a manageable speed that lets you be able to react accordingly. So just on gameplay alone it feels like there was disconnect from what the game wants to do to how the players should act which already is a failed design.
If you want Sonic to go fast make him fast, make the levels incentivize that speed but don’t take it all away with randomness with no build up in preparation to said randomness. An this is just my take from gameplay alone I’m not even gonna point out the camera wankiness that also punishes you and so on.
@@leonardoalvarenga7572 This isn’t a skill issue. If you are barreling down a tight corridor and you are prompted to turn a sharp right only to be greeted by a spike wall or pitfall with no warning or build up to it. Is that the players fault or the level designs fault?
You can’t expect people to have the reflexes to react to something in milliseconds especially when going at blistering speeds. There needs to be build up/ foreshadowing/warning in the levels structure to tell you that those dangers will happen. An there needs to be a level of confidence in that design that leans to the player being able to tackle it with confidence. Like running up a wall only to have the physic making you fall off said wall isn’t a skill issue.
@@leonardoalvarenga7572 Difference between unleashed and Omens just from this Video alone is Unleashed usually lets you see what’s coming at you in advance and the physics in place are confident enough that I wouldn’t fall off a wall while maintaining top speed. Even though i'd put my self in the category of people who like the game i'd still say some of the positive praise it gets just baffles me. Like saying this game is polished and it works perfectly fine is objectively a lie. Despite liking the level now, tree palace frustrates the crap out of me because it commits the cardinal sin of making you do the one thing you wouldn't want to do at the beginning of the stage, go under water to hit the first switch, when the levels whole entire focus is going up. I have no idea who designed these levels but the fact that they didn't realize how stupid this was baffles me on top of water being something you generally try to avoid anyway. Some of the later levels in general do a very poor job of guiding you through and it was the first time I ever had to look up a video to see where I need to go in a platformer.
I could go on with a bunch of things but to keep it short, i'll just say people need to learn how to separate their own personal bias' from what's actually presented. This game isn't better than anything Sonic Team's put out (and I haven't liked anything they've put out for a while), it isn't well designed in several areas and a lot of its strengths come from the engine rather than the game.
Yeah there's absolutely nothing wrong with liking Sonic Omens.
As I stated in the video, I thought it was terrible before I started to learn more about the game itself rather than focus on the drama behind it. It's not bad but the design choices for some of the stages and bosses is abysmal.
Getting better at the game unironically helped me realize just exactly why people disliked Omens so much. It's filled with death traps that can cause you to be punished over and over, which causes people to get really annoyed at the game. No one wants to deal with that at all in a Sonic game, or any casual platformer tbh.
I've never understood the frustration with the button in the tree level because the game literally shows you the buttons under water near red plants and a hint bubble under water when you start the stage. To me it's just like If your paying attention to the game it just gave you the answer.
And personally I want challenge and difficulty from Sonic games. It's why I have to wonder how would you compare this game difficulty wise to unleashed.
@@ChaserTech The game literally just punishes you for doing anything, and does so in ways that mindfucks the player.
@@chronoblue418 I guarantee you that no one focused on the grass their first time playing the level when they saw the switches. The first thing you'll look at is the switch before the camera cuts away. In my case I did find the red switch first on my first playthrough but I've seen people get stuck on the blue switch because the spring wouldn't work for it. If that's the case, only have one spring and one switch like any other game.
Unleashed difficulty is actually reasonable (maybe outside eggmanland due to the sheer length of the level)
It builds you up with levels that not only last longer but slowly introduces new hazards as you gain new abilities. If you make a mistake while playing Unleashed, you were punished merely by going a slower route (unless you mistime a button input when you're in the cannons.) Towards the later stages, you get punished a bit more but things were still fair.
Omens gives you a ton of obstacles to go that doesn't fit any sort of design that you would normally go through. As I explained in the video, there are tons of situations where a person stumbles across a new area, dies, and gets frustrated because the level design doesn't fit very well. I've seen plenty of playthroughs where this happens and that tells me that the stage isn't designed very well to direct the player on what they need to do. If you went through the stages fine, that's great. But if enough people have problems with stages to a point where the majority of players are complaining, there's a problem. Hell, between Moldy Jungle and United Railroad, the difficulty jumps extremely fast for no reason lol. And even after I've improved at playing these stages (the later ones), there are the numerous amounts of bugs and glitches that prevented me from getting an S rank time and time again. That alone wasn't challenge to me. It was annoyance.
I'd rather attempt a KMS challenge in God Hand than to S rank Omens again imo.

@@blazeneko3384 Well, to me it feels that "Omens bad, developers are assholes" is basically consensus in the fanbase, 'cause The Sonic Show is the only one that made a video in defense of Omens, others just repeated the same accusations, no matter how stupid they are (I look at you, XPool). And in the comments people mostly support that...
30:43. Your mic quality was fine. My mic on the other hand sucks ****. xD
Playing Sonic and Shadow stages on keyboard and mouse is awful. It's impossible to boost and side step at the same time depending on your keyboard layout, and Shadows abilities are mapped to the numpad. Now go and try to dash or chaos control in the middle of the action when you have to let go of the mouse and hit the key - and that's assuming you'll hit the right number at your first attempt - to then press C to activate it.
Sonic games doesn't work well with this kind of inputs, and that's the same issue I had with 3D blast. Still, for a fan project, it is really impressive. I had way more fun with it than with Forces, that's for sure.
I believe you can use the scroll wheel to cycle between chaos abilities, but yeah your right.
