"this one's like your mother's arms | when she was young and sunburnt in the eighties - it lasts forever" always gets me.
Me too, it's such a weird mix of sad and happy from such a tiny detail - but they're always the best ones.
The whole heels against the wall part gets me as it's about Matt's kid I'm pretty sure and about he feels dead set that he's stilll going to manage to fuck it up.
I don't get it, can you explain it please?
@@ripelivejam well he would be right. I dont think there is anyone in this world who is a parent and didnt go through the pain of fucking up your kid in one way or another. Some less then others, buts its just how it goes.
Matt's lyrics consistently manage to find a line between sad and silly, classy and goofy. This video captures that perfectly.
Tinydude10 agree completely, but I’d add that he can be/often is very poetic as well, when he wants to be. I like how he doesn’t over use it so to speak. Perfect balance of ambiguity/strangeness/awkwardness/abstractness vs. humanness/everydayness/genuineness/simplicity. The verses contrasted with the prechorus/chorus in this song display this very vividly.
Well put!!!
YES!
This is one of those special songs you can listen when you're sad, or happy. It always fits.
Probably the best song on the album. Not even overhyping. They really did the indietronica sound well here.
Maybe because they are Obama 's supporters? Are they Russian? 🙄
Moreover, one of their best songs ever.
Perfect! This music is the best of the album! The drums, as usual, are galactic!
"I'm going crazy, but I'm not crazy"
Absolute lyrical masterpiece
.
Devastated that they don't play this in their setlist more often!
Kieran They will now that it's a single.
I hope some people can experience it! I'm devastated I didn't get to see it live because matt had trouble with the timings so refused to sing it for a while. I think this will be a song they will play for years to come however.
They don't play it often? I swear I've seen it on every single setlist from the past tour so far, but I might be mistaken.
Not the ones that mattered! (aka the ones I went to :P )
Which gig did you go to? I'm sifting through setlist.fm to see what they've played when and I'm desperately hoping they play it when I see them on Thursday, seeing as it's my favourite song off the new album I think.
This album took time to grow on me, but when it grew , it grew like a motherfucker!
Couldn't agree more, their best work to date, and that's saying something!
Right with ya on that one. One of my favorite bands and i was bummed when I first heard it a few times then...BOOM! loved it!
One of my favourite songs ever, most definitely. The way the chorus kicks in with such a delicate, sweet melody (and such wonderful melancholic words) makes me want to cry every damn time. And some lines... "I'm just trying to stay in touch with/ Anything I'm still in touch with"... thanks guys.
perfect description of the chorus. You found the words i was missing :)
I'm always crying this makes me stop. Irony x
pretty accurate depiction of what it's like to go to a National show imo
boyep2 just eat a whole bunch of stool softeners. You'll achieve the same effect
Honestly, what the fuck IS the line "This one's like your mother's arms when she was young and sunburnt in the 80s, that last forever." Stupefyingly beautiful; the idea that you could find the warmth of your mother's sun kissed arms in ANYTHING else, to see it in anything at all outside of the fleeting memory of it, to me, is, a staggering idea. And that's just one line of this song. Completely rocked to my core.
It's like the Apartment Story video grew up and got wild. Splendid.
my thoughts exactly
The National are one of the most important American bands of the last quarter century.
For some reason the lines 'This one's like your mother's arms when she was young and sunburnt in the 80's' really gets to me. It gives this idea of memory and the passing of time. It makes me think about how my current state of being will pass, and I'll look back and remember these times that I'm in now.
You know, for a minimalist French ballet composer Bryce sure can write bangers.
😉
Ssshhh... our secret😅
The more level they have me
The more I cannot stand me
I have helpless friendships
And bad taste in liquids
It's so easy to set off
The molecules and the caplets
They all have something against me
Nothing I do makes me feel different
This one's like your sister's best friends in a bath calling you to join them
Can't avoid them
This one's like your mother's arms when she was young and sunburned in the '80s
It lasts forever
The more level they have me
The more I cannot stand me
I have helpless friendships
And bad taste in liquids
This one's like the wilderness without the world
I'm gonna miss those long nights with the windows open
I keep re-reading the same lines always up at 5am every morning
Like a baby
It's just the lights coming on
It's just the lights coming on
I have no positions
No point of view or vision
I'm just trying to stay in touch with anything I'm still in touch with
The sky's getting white
I can't find a lighter anywhere I'm going crazy
But I'm not crazy
Put your heels against the wall
I swear you got a little bit taller since I saw you
I'll still destroy you
It's just the lights coming on
It's just the lights coming on
Ucha Bedukadze thank u.
These are correct 👍
I always thought the lyric was molecules and Catholics. . . play on words with Shakespear
💖💖
@@jeremywhitman2302 I thought it was “the Montagues and the Capulets” as in Romeo & Juliet 😂
One of the best thing in my life is to encounter their music... Such an ethereal beauty.
This album is a masterpiece. The music keeps getting better, but the lyrics are otherworldly.
“I’m just trying to stay in touch with anything I’m still in touch with.”
Love the instrumental part at the end, with Matt getting a champagne shower over his hair then pouring plenty of champ' on his mate's shoulder. ^_^
I wanted to say this is one of my favourite songs on this album, but actually they all are
But what talent !!! I am impressed by so much beauty in music and the voice of Matt Berninger is perfect ...
Thank you so much for this beautiful song. It is changing my life for the better. It's very hard when you want to change and you're so scared of destroying your loved ones. This will be my anthem for this time of great change.
Can't stop watching this - quite simply the most 'National' National video... if that makes sense.
Bryan absolutely wrecks it on the drums on this song, wow
Yeeeessss
I'm now eternally sad I never got to trash this bar
Matt with the champagne towards the end. Brilliant.
This is one of the best song in music history
those fucking drums man
dude is a magician
The coolest video for my favourite song of the album. YES!
Yet another masterpiece! I just love it when music makes you go through emotions and memories like that. Love you guys
It's like a chaotic crescendo of peace and madness.
...With a little ecstasy in between.
Crescendo?
Pretentious
Luigi Ghost The ending of it was, I guess. I don't know. I was kinda high when I wrote that.
crescendo is an italian word
The drummer is so tight. What wonderful sound to the ear
One of their best. And there are a lot of them.
i'm surprised they picked this one to videoclip it ! :) i love this
I cant even explain how awesome this song is.
I love this band.
It's so easy to set off
The molecules and the caplets
They all have something against me
Nothing I do makes me feel different
This one's like your sister's best friends in a bath calling you to join them
Can't avoid them
This one's like your mother's arms when she was young and sunburned in the '80s
It lasts forever
[Verse 2]
The more level they have me
The more I cannot stand me
I have helpless friendships
And bad taste in liquids
This one's like the wilderness without the world
I'm gonna miss those long nights with the windows open
I keep re-reading the same lines always up at 5am every morning
Like a baby
I have no positions
No point of view or vision
I'm just trying to stay in touch with
Anything I'm still in touch with...
Matts vocal is one of the best ever
can't wait to see the National on the 10th of July in Zagreb....
This album is super!! All the songs are epic🙌
This song is perfect
Great video, amazing song. Sleep Well Beast is an album I have been listenning to daily since it came out.
Subtle and powerful.
Brasil ama vocês. 😍
Love this song.. Keep coming back
Best song on the album.
Nope. Carin at the liquor store
Day i die>>>>
Empire Line tho
Muchos Hornos carin at the liquor store?
This one and Empire Line
Everything about this song is perfect!
I'll have whatever they're on. Thank you.
I don’t know what it is about this song, but it brings me to tears. I don’t know if I’ll quite work out why, but I probably shouldn’t try and work it out. Instead, I’ll just appreciate its capacity to make me feel incredible.
my favorite from this album!!
Los amo!! El concierto del pepsi center fue algo hermoso ❤️❤️
Definitely one of my favorite songs of the album.
I wasn't expecting another great album from them this year or maybe ever. But it's been on repeat for a month now. And I particularly like this song. Good work guys!
Favorite song from this album
Excellent. You guys are pros.
So glad this one got a vid!! Well deserved
I woke up too early this morning, and this song just kept playing in my mind.
Sounds like it's at least partially about Matt's kid. The "i'll still destroy you" title/line makes that all the sadder.
Saw them at the Bell House in BK when they were up and coming and I knew I was seeing a special band.
I were at that place''Dope og Korruption'' a tent at their festival in Denmark called Haven
In general not my favorite of their albums but this song is easily my favorite along with Carin. Great background music.
Was terrific seeing you live in Queens
I always thought he sang "the molecules and the Capulets" but that's just the English major in me.
Has anyone been to their show yet? Deciding if I should go to their concert on the 25th.
Should or shouldn't I?
UPDATE: I went tot he show and can recommend it. Although he forgot the lyrics a few times, overal it was a good show and I loved the more raw sound
Sharon I've been a huge fan of The National for years now and have seen them at Down the Rabbit Hole festival last year and it was one the best shows I've seen, very pure. Going to both show on the 25th and 26th in Amsterdam, I definitely wouldn't miss it. The tickets are not very expensive at the moment on Ticketswap. See you there!
Of course you should! I saw them last year in Italy, such a beautiful evening!
Go! I saw them Saturday at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Usually I'm into heavier, doomier, noisier rock, but that evening was such a sweet treat. They are awesome musicians. Plus the voice live...mhhhhmmm.
I went to their show in London a few weeks ago, they were amazing. They played a long set, and most of the new record (I already enjoyed it but I enjoy a lot more now after I've heard the songs live). Go!
best live band in the world. that's not even remotely hyperbole either.
Intensely good song!
always nice to see a good song thats longer than 3 minutes
this one got to be their most happy song.
What can i say. Matt Besser has impeccable taste. brought me here. And am here to stay.
Best song since England 💖
I first heard these guys via Bloodbuzz on prog radio in 2010. I thought it was pretty good, so I researched the band's ouevre and discovered Bloodbuzz wasn't all that impressive compared to their earlier genius. In particular, I loved the quirky construction of classics like All Dolled up in Straps or Bitters & Absolut. What would it be like if the National ever composed a brilliantly quirky song that would still work in the large arena phase of their career? This is that song.
It appears Jurgen Klopp has taken a break from managing, doing a good job of it also.
"you'll never drink alone" c'mon you reds!
Ask him if he can trade Lovern for Devendorf
and Albie for Bryce
Looks like him all rite
More like Walter White from the end of Breaking Bad.
This is everything to me right now. Depression sucks
The more level they have me, the more I cannot stand me. Now that feeling perfectly...
**give you big hug**
@@gansiii hi! Can't believe I didn't notice your comment. Thank you ❤
i love you guys so much it hurts
My fav!
I love this song!!
Maravilloso
I love these guy
ooooooooooooooooooooooohh my godddddddddd this is insane
The National
and i’ll let you destroy me still.
That's what you get for innuendos.
Seriously? I hate these spambots. Four goddamn spam replies. I got two so far. Weird thing is I mostly see them on National videos.
I know, I only see them here, and I have tried reporting them several times but UA-cam doesn't delete them.
stupid bots ruined my dramatic comment. smh
UA-cam won't take them down even after being flagged. But I don't know why they appear in this band's videos.
It's an early birthday present. Sigh. I love this band ❤️❤️❤️
Herlig video til en af de bedste sange på pladen!
This looks like a perfect night.
as usual matt is amazing so is the song
absolutely adore how you can hear justin vernon of bon iver's falsetto in the background as backing vocals starting at 1:45
Lovely song!
Yes!
This video is done really well
Beautiful song :)
so underrated..
Been listening to this song for days since I saw them at Southside in Dallas and heard them play it live. Its interfering with my life.
IDM genre here, never was much into it, until this album came out with some smackers.
whoa.
i've never seen matt smile
Thanks
The best song from sleep well beast
rollin benoit Day i die>>>
Simplemente increíble...
I love you guys.
"If it weren't for cigarettes I wouldn't drink this much. It would be more. If it weren't for God there would be nothing to forsake in the name of ego and self to feel so important to have been forsook once I let go or felt what defined it or me and I don't care about you you are stupid."
,dan' (I can't overstand you)
We want "the lights" back! Damned....
Roberto Pirani Yes! Yes! They ruined the song. The previous version was much better.
Hate the people who disliked this masterpiece.
Every morning...
Like a baby...
