Makes me wanna go cry somewhere in a three-piece suit. You beautiful bastards.
LampshadeCrab read this like 'three-piece swimming suit' and I was like yeah I see what you mean
unacceptableeee!!
Most relatable comment in the history of relatable comments.
Perfect. & especially while it's raining.
No. It's sunny and you're the only one
How shit is this guy at relationships to be this heartbroken for 6 albums though?
Not complaining, I hope he keeps it up... but damn.
vincent van heerden I think Matt's been married since early 2000s. Doesn't mean you can't have complicated emotions and thoughts about it/life/relationships in general still.
He’s our favorite sad sack
He's a bad breaker upper !
well i don't think that every song he wrote was about him. It can be about you or about me or about any of us. What if he writes about literary characters. It's the best thing he can do, writing sad songs. And well If that was a joke I couldn't find it funny. I'm sorry! :D
@Pranjal Protim coldplay fucking rocks and randomly mentioning another band is a shitty defense, lol
I’m a musician and I listen to so many different bands, some are really good some are not my style but ... The National is the only band from the hundreds , maybe thousands of bands I’ve heard that I’ve stablished a deep connection , they’re different , they’re too .. real , I feel like crying listening to their music .. it’s so beautiful
I’m from Ecuador , hope you guys come someday here
Willo
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs in existence
They have made some of the best music I've ever heard. I'm crying right now knowing that you love their music.
Their new song that they just put out is shatteringly beautiful.
I just heard the theme song from Three's Company and felt the same way.
@Gino Furzi The one where Jack and Mr. Roper were trying to unplug the kitchen sink and Janet and Chrissy, listening in from behind the kitchen door, thought they were having sex.
Matt Berninger has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever been blessed to hear. Not to mention, The National has such a soothing sound mixed with raw energy and gorgeous lyrics. They are always amazing and lovely.
Agree.. Amazing vocals
I love how absolutely drained he sounds on this song, works beautifully with the lyrics.
and video too
Every time I'm going through a really tough break up The National seems to drop a new album. Coincidence? I think not. You're all welcome for having such a troubled love life. They just keep releasing music to help me through.
BigmanBrook this.
Sorry, but I hope you keep getting dumped. If that's the case. But cheer up, mate.
I'm with you my friend. It's a hefty price to pay, but damn is it worth it.
ka
Same here, you are not alone. Stay strong kid
If by any chance you are reading this, I am so sorry I let my fear and arrogance get the best of me. I should have told you how I felt the first time you left. I should have told you how I felt even when you came back and I left.
Fuck it, I should have told you how I felt the first time we saw each other, when our eyes met across the room. It was the closest thing to love at first sight I am ever going to experience. You are my greatest love, the one and only.
I hope you are well and loved now. I still say your name.
Not crying over this song anymore means that I'm over the breakup. Doesn't it?
ShiruSama1 eventually you laugh about how young you were and how douchey they are. Maybe just an image of who you're waiting to find.
thank you
Me and my girlfriend broke up right before this album dropped. This shit hits me so hard because there was no huge thing wrong but so many small things that added up and neither of us wanted to end it but it need to end. Fucking national hitting me right in the feels
SirYacob hey same, bud. welcome to the heartbreak club, all we do is listen to the national and nod our heads between taking sips of rum
Keep it up guys, it is always for the better in the long run, changes are like that, they can't help it. Just get everything you need out of your system
Same. It dropped the exact same week
"Guilty Party"
You're sleeping night and day
How'd you do it
Me I am wide awake
Feeling defeated
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I know it's not working
I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
We just got nothing
Nothing left to say
Another year gets away
Another summer of love
I don't know why I care
We miss it every summer
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I'm the one doing this
There's no other way
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
I just got nothing, nothing left to say
It all, all catches up to me
It all, all catches up to me all the time
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I know it's not working, I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
We just got nothing, nothing left to say
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I'm the one doing this, there's no other way
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
I just got nothing, nothing left to say
It all, all just catches up to me
It all, all catches up to me all the time
Wow, already one of my favorite National songs. That guitar work at 2:43 is incredible.
Colin Beirne I let out the softest 'oh' when I heard it
that was a guitar? thought that was a piano.
Main sounds is from a piano, but guitar does sound really ellegant. Such a good musicians those brothers. Personally, drums and the crooner voice in National songs determine its style
JASON BARR
I don't know about the 80s, but I'm getting a Swingtown vibe off of it.
@oddun It's definitely a guitar.
There have been National tracks that dont really hit me at first, much like this one, sometimes the verse moves too slow, or the chorus isnt as triumphant as my heart wants.....but with those slow moving tracks comes beautifully meshed, interweaving instrumentation that always breaks through at the end and really does a number on me. This track is gorgeous and will only grow on me more and more. By the time the album drops ill probably have cried to this song 3+ times......ugh. The National is my heart. Damn you Matt.....
Completely agree. The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness was that for me. To be honest, first time I listened to it I was very underwhelmed. Sounded too discordant. Now it's probably my third favourite of any of their songs, only behind Mistaken For Strangers and I Should Live In Salt.
Generally it's the tracks that grow on you over time that become you favourite songs. They usually have more "depth", be it lyrical, melodic, instrumental or whatever.
DrunkNBrawlin man, Mistaken for Strangers is the most perfect song ever released for me. Don't swallow the cap a close second.
Nice! All my favorite National tracks usually are off of their EP's and b sides......Tall Saint and Cherry Tree are some of the most hard hitting Natty tracks to ever fuck my noggin....
Terence Shipp tbh, this is probably the best song of their career. The System Only Dreams is definitely more upbeat and accessible, but to me, this one is way better. I want more sounds like this on the upcoming album
This is exactly what heading towards a divorce feels like.
1000%
Agree, I'm so sorry you are feeling this way, understand 💘
Totally. It's official at the beginning of 2021
Absolutely. And there it is... relevant again.
Not heading. There. This is exactly what it feels like…and it’s hell. It’s pain. It’s hurt. It’s ugly. It devastates your kids in the process.
I hate all of it, but I’m here.
This song is so beautiful in how it explains it.
I just listened to this song 20x in a row...and each time, my heart broke open wide...tears flowing from my eyes...a cathartic release of pain and disappointments I thought I had moved past. THIS is the POWER of hauntingly vulnerable and beautiful music.
I remember the first time I saw The National live at Shaky Knees...I started bawling the very first song...it was so profound and I felt so embarrassed. Thank you for the gift of your gorgeous music. ~♡
I'll add to the comment theme: Still miss him and probably will for a long time. He showed me this band and I listen to them probably 3 hours a day. Just really hope he understands that I genuinely love him and always will despite how things ended.
You're sleeping night and day
How you do it
Me I am wide awake
Feeling defeated
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
Oh it's not working
I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party

Nothing left to say
Another year gets away
Another summer of love
I don't know why I care
We miss it every summer

It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
I just got nothing, nothing left to say
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
No it's not working, I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
We just got nothing, nothing left to say
It all, all just catches up to me
It all, all catches up to me all the time
markhoul thank you!
Damn dude, going through breakup, feels like it's written for us, National is my spirit animal.
We just got nothing
not I just got nothing
amazing, as always.
The National I just love them. I relate to their sound and music so much!
I'm liking the new sound, I think this album is going to be a game changer for The National
Matthew Speed they made lots of new songs during their Glastonbury set and it will definitely be a game changer
Hans Arteaga Romero too right mate too right, regardless I'm hyped, its not like their other stuff but I'm really digging this, I welcome this new style with open arms
what exactly do you feel are new elements? i do feel some new sounds but i cant pinpoint it. i loved where they went with trouble will find me, felt it was their best sound yet. I feel the changes are slight but can be significant, but the theme and feel is always maintained
Antonio Pomposini the drumming in this song is super prominent, their drummer has always been great but on this song it just rises to the top
drums as a first. also i have never listened that much of guitar layering within the records as on these 2 songs (this one and the system only dreams in total darkness) and during the glastonbury set they closed with a new song called "Turtleneck"...and guys let me tell ya, that song's a big monster, it's the national like we have never heard them before
Watching you live on Pitchfork in Paris this song immediately went right into my heart! It's so beautiful! I love the other new one's too, but this one just hit me right from the beginning.
I can relate to this to a painful extent. Feel like I'm losing touch with a whole bunch of my friends. Was in that sort of headspace when I heard this for the first time and it absolutely fucking wrecked me. Probably why I don't listen to it as often as System or Carin, but it's a fantastic song that might be easier for me to handle in time.
Reach out to them Gareth. If they're true friends it doesn't matter if it's been weeks, months since you've seen or spoken to them. Don't know what you're going through that has led you away from those close to you but hope you can get through it. Life isn't finite and there are periods in our life that are just temporary. The shit times make us stronger, we just don't realise how much until we've come out the other side.
This song will touch your heart, right away, from the beginning. Then, that playful and tricky drum, joining at exactly the right moment, at 1:20, will give you some hope, that maybe, things may cheer up. They won't. So sad but so beautiful.
I cannot handle how great this is. I need an ambulance
eeep mood
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
No it's not working
My ex boyfriend who broke up with me two weeks ago sent me this song yesterday.
I'm finally early. Nice to be a part of the Guilty Party party
NeonFairytale Yes!
love you hun truth eh
If you've lived through this, you know this song is too real. Painful listening... but cathartic. Thank you, The National.
Exactly it sums up everything
Schedule of the day: 1) turn on The National-Guilty Party 2)Cry 3) Repeat
Lol it happened to me when I first heard this
This.
These guys are the ultimate breakup champions
Yeah, they are.
"Nobody's fault... no guilty party. It all, catches up to me... all the time." 😢
My favorite line 😢
I love this song!
I miss my boy
I'm 52 and, after some 40 years of listening to and loving music, The National have over the last few years, become my favourite band.
Now, that's some accolade. ❤
Absolutely, 100%
beautiful
masterpiece !
I think it's harder for them to make bad music than it is to make good music.
Greg Olmeda I think you're right
Greg Olmeda not one bad song in 15 years
Got tears in my eyes listening to this. Beautiful.
It is heartbreaking
Feels like an apt sequel to "About Today"
apt story 2
Okay. Who else cried when they listened to this song?
loving the vibe. drums are amazing as usual.
Brian Pineda Seriously, the drumming here is unreal. His most inventive drumming since the Boxer days, easily.
Es increíble la manera en la que hacen la música, cada segundo te pone una imagen de tu vida en tu cabeza, cada segundo es una vibra demasiado agradable para el alma. Gracias The National, gracias por acompañarme una madrugada más.
This song describes breaking up perfectly.. The feeling of hopelessly trying to mend the relationship and not wanting to face the fact that it's over.
Yes. And not to point a quilty one
I love this band. My favorite in many ways. But I long for the more melodic, rocking side of these guys.....the shuffling melodies of Aligator stirred me like no other record before or since. And while I see the merits of this new material, its colder and more obtuse----but still brilliant.
Apparently Turtleneck on the new record is super rocky.
omg i'm sooo excited for this album ♥️♥️♥️ i missed you guys!
perfect to drive a cross-country trip too ending with driving off a cliff
Driving away from a secret love at 5am...
Back to your old one.

But for real, please check me out, thx
The National... RADIOHEAD EDITION.
(P.s. - I have absolutely no problem with that.)
I really can not notice any similarity.
Typical voice sung as always by Matt in his style
Typical drums by the national.
Typical guitars by the twins.
Nothing special in the bass line as usual.
Classic piano by the national.
Strings and pads as always in their style probably by Padma Newsome.
Trombone and trumpet as usual.
The National in The NATIONAL Edition... nothin more.
Sorry for all fans of Radiohead.
Some similarities then:
-Thin, electronic-sounding (but acoustic), delayed drums intro, playing a breakbeat - topped by incoherent, indulgent heavily bit-crushed sample;
-which evolves into slightly less thinned, more acoustic Verse-1 drums, which are played at consistent volume in the mix and same velocity (in an drum-machine mimicking manner) - which is topped by the introduction of syncopated, heavy-bodied, resonating piano chords, with limited presence of other instruments (in order to leave space for the gravitas of the piano and voice to take affect);
-Subtly introduces pre-chorus pulls in a rotating treble drone sound to build anticipation/urgency, which bleeds into a ‘chorus’ which is very maintained, and not a huge escalation on the verse;
-Verse-2 jumps up the overall sound, with more acoustic sounding, bigger body drums, a more active bassline, and more proactive instruments generally;
-Moves towards an unfurling, slightly loose, Chorus 2;
into a ‘bridge’ which is more of an extended outro, which with reversed-reverb ping-pong guitars, and the reintroduction of the bit-crushed sample - with a long-winded fade out (and not a crescendo).
Some Radiohead songs for reference Idioteque, Kid A, Pyramid Song, Videotape, Daydreaming.
I’m not saying in any way that Radiohead invented any of these things, or are the only ones who sound like that (or, indeed, that all of Radiohead's songs sound like these) - but Guilty Party certainly recalled them to my mind - and all in a positive way, as a welcome surprise.
And if you think that you could reduce The National back to ‘typical’ or ‘as usual’ components - then you are doing them a great disservice. Their very ability to have an entirely diverse sound song-to-song; nevermind album-to-album, is what I love about them.
Now I’m off to listen to the just-released Sleep Well Beast for the first time in full - and I looking forward to more surprises.
I love The National and I listened every album and ep they did. Once I said that... you misunderstood me, when I said typical and usual I was talking about their style.
I'm not saying they play the same things. I'm not talking about their sound which I agree with you but everyone of them have their style to sing and to play that's pretty much the same since the "The National".
By the way one album by one they improved their sound to stand at Sleep Well Beast with an improved and a massive use of synths compared to Trouble Will Find Me where the sound was based still on the guitars or piano, except for some songs like Heavenfaced for example. However that's not the point, the way Matt sings and the way like Bryce and Aaron play guitar and specially the way Bryan play drums it's just the same and I was talking about that.
I don't know if you're a musican but there's a difference between the style to play and the studing of the sound which you wanna to come out. I think you're a drummer, you explained me the evolving of the drums but I work in a studio recording and I work also on mixing of instruments so I think I can appreciate sounds peculiarity by myself don't worry.
I repeat I was talking about their style and that's pretty normal, everyone has own style and it doesn't change in the time... that's the reason why you recognize Santana in radio also if you don't know the song.
At the end if you know just Radiohead don't say please "RADIOHEAD edition" it's so annoying also cause I can say "Boards of Canada edition" the simply use of same electronics elements hasn't to be a reason to say "they're similiar" cause the style and the purpose it's completely different.
PS and for whatever it's worth I bet my balls: The National are not influenced by Radiohead. Greetings.
To quote you 'PS and for whatever it's worth I bet my balls: The National are not influenced by Radiohead. Greetings' - if you won't take it from me, perhaps you'll take it from Matt Berninger:
'It’s why Radiohead is still the greatest band in the world…because you just don’t know what they’re going to do next. You may not like every record, but you’re excited to see if they’re gonna have any weird, new discoveries.' - (3:50, at ua-cam.com/video/g0bzeF9kUcM/v-deo.html). Additionally, Matt's sentiments about pushing things, is exactly what I'm saying Guilty Party is evident of an explorative sound.
oh come on, I knew that ... do not be a kid. He talked for about 2:30 minutes of Arcade Fire, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, The Strokes, Nirvana, The Smiths and Cat Power and only then at the question "how are u going to follow up the high violets" he started to talk about not be boring with the same sound and he did an example with radiohead who are able to reinvent themselves nothing more nothing less ... everyone try to improve their sound, that was a compliment he wans't talking about his influences anymore. Don't do just a simple search on the web it's a very stupid thing. The National are my favourite band but they've nothing in common with Radiohead, stop.
Every divorce or break up ever..
"Please Forgive Me" by David Gray and "Idioteque" by Radiohead had a baby
I definitely hear the "Please forgive me" beat in this song! Good catch! David is a genius, I think NEMESIS is David's best song ever. Can listen to it over and over never gets old.
veerchasm1 ....I agree and a lil bit of New Order about 2 minutes in
Who'dve thought people have musical influences...? Thankfully their influences arent Jedward and Crazy Frog.
Nah. It's straight up Bruce Springsteen.
SO ACCURATE
I wish UA-cam had a Mega-Like option
Fantastic new music from The National - this is 'Guilty Party'
4AD
YES!!!!!
Can't wait for the new album's release!!!!!!! :D :D
4AD ... is that what that says?
This is awesome
Sometimes instead of walking straight into the ocean... there's the national. It's nice not to feel alone in a feeling.
Anyone else get goosebumps
My ears say thank you.
Yup
Saw them in Milan last summer, I bursted into tears while they were playing Guilty Party. They are amazing live. Gave me such great emotions that I can still revive them...
This band simply can't make bad music, can they?
Loved the song. Excited for the new album!
My good taste in music brought me here ;)
Only the National could make an electronic riff so incredibly sad and depressing
b young 👪
You should listen to more music fam
You are so totally on point with your comment. Thank you.
@@jacolagrange4928 any recommendations?
@@Williamdzi There are many hella depressing electro acts. There are even electro genres based depressing melodies and themes. Darkwave stands out as a depressing genre. But an enjoyable depressing genre imo is witch house. To start on a lite/pleasant version of witch house, check out crystal castles and decide if you want to delve deeper
no hype, no hype, no hype, NO HYPE...
OMFG!!!!!!!!!
when the real drums kick in >>
Another year gets away
Another summer of love
I don't know why I care
We miss it every summer
God. Why do all their songs have to be so beautifully heartbreaking?
Es increíble la manera en la que hacen la música, cada segundo te pone una imagen de tu vida en tu cabeza, cada segundo es una vibra demasiado agradable para el alma. Gracias The National, gracias por acompañarme una madrugada más.
Gey
Thank you for the soundtrack of my life! For more than ten years now....
The electronic elements add more layers to their music making it even richer than before. The evolution of this band is remarkable.
siz olmasaydınız kendimi öldürmüştüm the national teşekkür ederim iyi ki varsınız unarım bir gün sizi canlı izleyebilirim
primeiro a gente diz QUE HINO e depois a gente ouve
0:01 QUE HINOOOOOOOO
0:01 QUE HINOOOOOOOO
0:01 QUE HINOOOOOOOO
Wow...what a song
Craig Conlan I agree and
its a heartbreaking song also.. whichever way you interpret it....for me its my relationship with my parents...and the problems its given me in my life..
as far as people saying its a different national sound
..well for me no ...but still love it
This is the thing, they always change their sound but always stay true to themselves.
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I know it's not working
I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
We just got nothing
Nothing left to say
He doesn't understand that I have abandonment issues. He has attachment issues. Is it possible we're still perfect for each other, yet timing isn't right? This life can be so unjust and heartbreaking, even if you fight to stay together, to make things right????
When you are lonely and your birthday is in summer. Perfect tune to celebrate
happy birthday bro!
The Originals S5 episode 1 ending song...i love it
it's that voice, makes me want to laugh and cry and other things......
That "idk why i care" just hit different 😔
Nunca dejas de sorprenderme The national
How hard it is to realize a relationship is not working anymore. Even if you know is going to break you inside more than for the other, to break up with that person. To listen to reproaches and to see sadness, knowing that with time, that person will be the first one, because of anger, to move on. Ironically, to see this accomplished. Still. How hard it is to stay true to yourself, and be blamed for it.
Preach
this is a NATIONAL treasure
nicolas cage is playing xylophone in the background of this track. u might not be able to hear it but someone from the label confirmed it!!
Jacques Jacobi Nicolas Cage actually plays all the instruments for the National. He puts on disguises and cleverly uses mirrors to play shows.
Roughly 10% of the world's population is actually Nicolas Cage in disguise.
THE DECLARATION!
I don't get it
Such wonderful, touching, soul-gripping sounds, the tones and textures become so personal, even poignant, that I can swear a mass of emotion rose in my chest, an immense sensation like being hit in the chest by a wrecking ball. Such an intense feeling, it was a heartache like I've never known, similar to intense mourning, a yearning for something so valuable, now lost, never ever to be replaced or duplicated. I became so sad and honestly emotional that my eyes watered, producing a few tears. This is one of those songs you can never stop listening to.
That drum sequence at 3:04 is just amazing. Gives me chills every time.
Inspirador! ♡ cadê os BR que curte arte ? ^^
Lost count how many times I’ve listened to this song. Lyrically, vocally, instrumentally, rhythmically stunning
Иголочки по душе и это при том, что я в тексте почти ничего не понимаю : Сила музыки!
This is kinda hitting me hard right now. I've been listening to this album on repeat.
Taylor Swift brought me here and said I have to stan The National, thier collaboration with Taylor on a song called Coney Island is breathtaking!
Nobody gives a shit
Excelente rola saludos desde Estado de Mexico NO AL FRAUDE ELectoral.
Victoria rod jajajaja que pedo?😂
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...
Really liking this new electronic sound
Why is the National always so damn relatable. Love this song, just keeps growing on me every time I listen.
Does anyone have any advice on losing a best friend?
It's hard to watch her slowly become a stranger everyday. I tried to keep talking with her but i can see her avoiding me so i decided to stop trying to not make it any harder for her. On the other side, it doesn't make it any easier for me and the feelings distract me from education and from living fully.
I already know why she avoids me - she simply found better friends than me. Its just the feeling of loss that i can't handle.
I hope you're okay
It all catches up with me..All..The time.
wish Pitchfork live video was still up
search for the channel Henryvenegasdroguett. All the new songs of the show are on the channel!
Me too. I don`t understand why they moved it.
I read that they take it down for a while to mix to audio better, then re-upload in a few weeks.
it's still out there if you look ..
that's why I downloaded it the minute it ended :D
Watch the hidden messages pepz ;)... your sleeping night and day... see the pyramid at the start of the video
Sounds like Raymond Carver's story.
This song is Amazing 😇😍
Here it on The originals S5E1 Klaus+Hope :):):) 😇✔👌👍
The originals brought me here
Klaus calling Hayley but Hope is answering. After a long time,I'm still here :)
The National always make me feel all the feels, this song is so beautiful.
911 dislike´s people have not soul
This is their best new song from the new album so far, by far! One of their all time best even! Ooo, how I love this song! So much emotion and depth.
One of the best songs ever made
pretty sure this song is about the covid pandemic
I want to step out on the deck of of a snow covered mountain cabin and stare into infinity with this on repeat.
Best band on the planet
such beautifull melancholic song
