Yep. They do and it seems unintentional for laymen. For some it strikes immediately due to a certain sensitivity and for others it requires a careful student of art or movie to explain deeper layers
You know what these guys knew the youth very well. The youth that shouts, that protests, that parties too. The problem is the most modern bolywood films like Badri ki Dulhania or such others that are supposed to connect to youth is very monodirectional, only love and nothing else( some songs shoved in between that none asked for). Kabir Singh is also a complete show of male domination and"love" and so it goes on. The point is that love is losing its freshness and people are getting detached from the very real fact that they also have need, existential crisis and are ready to protest always. These things have become so rare in movies that people think that films like Rang de Basanti is so great. I mean it is great but it shouldn't be that way.
It's film making... The "making" is a simple word but it contains alot of thought process, ideologies, opinions and hard work of hundreds of people when it comes to a non-commercial movie.... So yes the story writes and directors do think all of this aspects and more, this was just an analysis...
Coz our mind is so used to paddling shit that it runs away from the first sight of deep thoughts. We have been fed that shit systematically from 'kya apke toothpaste mei namak hai " to " india wants to know" and many more.
I have no doubt that your content on Bollywood Cinema beats every other that exists online. Period. This was such a well analyzed, presented video. I always had the grudge that there is NO one talking of the film. It is just stars or music. And even after completing a mini course on film studies, your videos teach me so much more. Though I have one counter view on "Audience don't accept heavy material". I think they still don't. It needs to have few commercial elements to lure audiences into theater. Even Rang De Basanti(RDB) had a big lead actor and hit music to increase its "commercial value". Films that sans this, like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (DBB), Fan, Masaan and Titli to name a few didn't fare as expected. Of course, these films may not be as good as RDB. But when DBB releases with Furious 7, people prefer watching the latter. The mainstream cinema still can't be as experimental and free everytime. It should improve slowly though. Filmmakers are at least looking at slightly unconventional subjects these days. Maybe there will be a time when we will have 3-4 RDBs in a year. But not today or tomorrow. Again, your knowledge on this is exceptional. The aspect ratio match was a wonderful find, though it broke my heart a little to see these recent films that I had loved so much compromising somewhere. If you are open to film suggestions, I would request for analysis on Neerja. And please, keep up this great work! :)
You didn't get y point. I was talking about how those films are different from what is expected in a mainstream film. A Shah Rukh Khan film having no song-and-dance and almost non-existent romantic track is very rare to see. Probably only Chak De India! achieved that. I know, the film wasn't great. There were loopholes, but the film was dark.
So true mate. I really crave for thought provoking movies like this. RDB, Swades, 3 Idiots, Tare Zameen Par were "SOME" of them IMHO. It is true that, today, any raw movie that has even tremendous storyline, brilliant performance by the actors, may or may not be thought provoking, well presented on the screen but lacks in pomp, sadly fails to lure the masses and just AYA RAM GAYA RAMs. I do not care about their numbers but about the fact that people do not even know about them, forget about being watched. Some of these people without even considering these films criticise Bollywood for not making GOOD CONTENT movies. One such film is ITTEFAAQ which came in 2017. There was no buzz about it but still I went with my brother to watch it and believe me, I was not disappointed a bit. Same goes with DBB, it was such an engaging thriller and I am desperately waiting for its sequel. Other than the movies you mentioned Gulaal, Iqbal, Aankho Dekhi, Bheja Fry, Well Done Abba, Dor, Kaun, Laksya, Mein Meri Patni aur Wo ( due to sheer brilliance of Rajpaal Yaadav), Shaurya , Chalo Dilli , Mukkabaaz, The Luchbox , Dusvidaniyaa , Manorma: six feet under, Shanghai , Oye Lucky Oye are the modern day movies which deserve much ( Respect and fame if not money )but are sadly unheard among masses again IMHO. I do not say that all of them were cult, but some were Good and rest were Just Brilliant and were better than todays big budget craps.
I am a design student and was working on analysis of the direction of this movie. You covered everything I had jotted down and added more to that. Bravo!!!
Mindblowing!! big fan of your work. Got goosebumps watching this video. Highlighting the details of each character and supporting it with a philosophical statement. Hats off! Also I just noticed that in that key scene as each character puts his views, the camera angle starts tilting.. and stops as the conversation descent to a lighter tone.
The socio-political context of the film fits aptly with the times. This zeitgeist is different from the angry, young man of the late 70s because rather than a hero, a Ubermensch, rising and inspiring from despair, an entire class of youth of different demographics steps out to change the order. Looking forward to your critiques and would be great to share thoughts whenever you're in Bangalore or Delhi.
Excellent analysis. Thanks for this video. RDB is a cult classic and one of the rare gems in indian cinema. Hats off to Mehra and his entire team for this brilliant piece of work. Binod pradhan's cinematography, Music by ARR , Lyrics by Prasoon Joshi and to the entire cast and crew , My big salute! RDB will be remembered even after 100 years
Good work! Aamir and Mehra have that seriousness toward the society and country. Hope people will someday understand what constitutes a great film and encourage it.
You are overqualified for this platform. I am glad there are a very few, who are actually using this platform for what it was really meant for, sadly the percentage is less than 1 percent. I wish you had more time to make such videos, keep posting brother. Big fan of your work.
I found your channel today. I must say i have not seen anyone like you who breaks down indian cinema like this. Kudos man! You are really doing a great job. I hope you continue doing the same for more years to come
That was one of the most thoughtful and articulate analysis I have ever seen and was coupled with a great way of conveying it. I really appreciate the hard work and wish more people could see it. Keep it up!
good work vinit. your style of work is so close to that of channel- nerdwriter1. one of my fav channels. your style of comparison with foreign movie is lovely. What I like the most is the technical talk that you do in between. tell me did you take philosophy notes from the channel - 'the school of life' ? Anyways, All the best for your future videos.
After watching few of your vids, I can say I learnt a thing or two about cinema. What I like about this one is that you dont hesitate in saying that maybe, now after 10 years of RDB release, you might have other ideas about the ideology shown in this film. Keep up the honest work. Earned a subscriber.
These analyses of yours are really a work of appreciation. The things hidden beneath the characters are something to explore beyond one's limited understanding. Please make more such videos because it matters for all anticipatingly watching your videos and pressing the like button and posting comments.
hey....I don't know anything about camera angles and lighting...and all......but I think it's the emotion and AR rahmans great work which did the magic here....
I just came across your videos and spent the weekend watching all of them. You clearly know your stuff. But what makes these videos so appealing is the objective view without pandering to one genre or only popular movies. Also your presentation style make even the regular view engrossed in the technicalities of filmmaking. Great job! Pls post more videos.
I'm so glad somone else finally talked about the theme of essence and purpose , this was exactly what I was thinking when I watched this film, thank you for making this video
Dude, I just love the way you analyze all the situations, where do you get all this content from...I mean getting the idea of citing various philosophies is completely unique and gives a totally unique perspective to a seemingly unidimensional way that one watches a movie...hats off bro just keep up the good work.
I've started to admire your work so much, the content & criticism of this channel is intelligent and sophisticated. I wish you all the best, you and your team(if you have) deserve success.
This channel is such a find!! Its great to see someone creating content like this for Indian Movies. Pleeeeaasssseeee do Hey Ram! One of the best movies from Indian Cinema IMHO! PLLLLEEEEAAASSSEEE!!

I just discovered your channel and totally blown away with your analysis. Be it comparing dil chahta hai with feuds id, ego and superego or analysing self discovery of Mohan in swades, your analysis feel as if touching every right underlying note of the film. Simply fantastic
You changed my mind to see towards movie. Frankly speaking I cried so many times while watching this movie and every time later on. Thanks a lot for Video. It is a way away from the video but superbly designed.
Great work! And I totally relate to the ideological difference felt by you upon watching it after 10 years.. Thought it was only me who suddenly felt very differently about the characters' actions.
This is an incredible video. In Indian cinema, too much time is spent "reviewing" the movie, talking about acting and the story and the songs. But very few critics out there do a good job properly analyzing the films themselves (Baradwaj Rangan may be one of the only mainstream ones out there). Indian cinema (and I'm including the industries beyond Bollywood) has made so many intelligent, thoughtful, and important films over the years, but even films that succeeded commercially (including Rang De Basanti) remain underappreciated and underanalyzed. So thank you for doing this, I look forward to watching the rest of your videos. Also, if I can toss in a request, I think Tamasha is worth doing a deep dive analysis on. After several viewings of the film, there are so many layers to unpack and though it's not a perfect movie, it's a far deeper one than most people give it credit for. I truly believe that, one day, it will become a cult classic like Swades.
Ur one of the few brilliant Indian content creators speaking about cinema... Keep up the good work... Is there any place to drop in requests or suggestions?
M so happy finally v have a film analysis of Indian films as well. Also how it goes into global cinema. The open comparison with points of argument makes us realize, v can't b blindly biased protecting our cinema behind the "our culture" curtains

Huge respect for your passion in films and shwoing us the depth of each and every emotion and ideas put behind every frame that we missed even though we enjoyed all the movies that u have reviewed. Thank you for taking the time to provide such content, particularly on the very underrated RDB. Interesting as you point out at the start and end of this analysis, the mid 2000s had a 2-3 yr period of excellent bollywood cinema - omkara rdb parineeta guru metro kank are some - that we thought the tide was changing toward better cinema, and then unfortunately the tide reverted right back to hero-centric masala movies until well into the 2010s.

Sometimes I wonder if the story writer or the director really thought about all these points.
ZUBAIR MOHSIN obviously! Only then they would be able to make the film proceed further. Binod pradhan is indeed a gem the film industry has got.
Really?
Yep. They do and it seems unintentional for laymen. For some it strikes immediately due to a certain sensitivity and for others it requires a careful student of art or movie to explain deeper layers

It's difficult to find youtube videos made with actual brains nowadays. Please don't ever stop whatever you do.

As always, a brilliant video. You might be my favourite UA-camr. Thanks for making this and keep up the good work.
The number of views demonstrates the very point you made throughout the video ...there is a dearth of the knowledge needed to recognizing quality, and without recognition of something.. appreciation of it is beyond imagination...
Such a nice video essay. Brought back memories of this iconic film.

Was always waiting for a channel that analyzes Indian cinema. Keep going , great stuff.
Ohh man! Believe me I have never seen this type of analysis. And Thank you for this! Keep making this type of video!
