Being a Bangladeshi cine buff I always wanted to watch Bombay or legend Mani's terrorism Trilogy on wide screen! Awesome video! Thank you for making this and dissecting the amazing background score of Bombay. Just to elaborate upon the ingenuity of Rehman. He uses different Ragas for different effects. The flute theme is in Ananda Bhairavi The song Tu Hi Re with it's charanam is in Charukesi The song Kehna Hi Kya is in Kirwani Each of these ragas express a certain bhava and Rahman knew how to use those to full advantage!
At the end of the video 1. 13:01 Introduces a music segment to start conclusion 2. 13:20 Appreciate rehman sirs work by adding leitmotif 3. 13:25 and 13:30 repeats the leitmotif by comparing with stalwarts 4. 13:35 Takes the audience to crescendo with important message to read. Genius

That was one of the best 14 mins I’ve ever spent on UA-cam. So informative and instilling a feeling of nostalgia same time. Bombay was amazing musically.
One thing I noticed about BOMBAY's music is how ARR used Gujarati folk song "HEY JEERE" as background music when Manisha Koirala lands in Bombay. This music captures very well the essence of Bombay of 90s. That piece of music is heavenly. I have been trying to find audio version of that piece of music since ages but to no avail.
I am a huge fan of ARR but never ever thought about the amount of thinking and design going into the background score. One more thing to listen sharp and analyze from ARR movies.

Waited for almost 15 years for someone to explain me how Rahman composed this bg score, specifically the Bombay Theme. Was a kid when this movie released back in 90's, never watched in theater. If this movie re-releases today in India, I don't mind travelling to india to watch this in theater to get the feel its theatrical experience.
Amazing.. superb explanation... Two most interesting facts are when sa ga ma pa ni sa is played along with the mridangam and when the relationship of parents unifying is explained through silence.... It's evident why Rahman, Raja sir or any other music director are so talented... Its because they have been working on it from many years behind the scenes as programmers, arrangement etc so before they start their first assignment they would have understood thousands of music fundamentals

An ingenious and insightful analysis, attending both educative and entertaining aspects of cinema and music. Would love watching an in depth analysis of Bombay theme orchestra piece itself.
Its not just Bombay, you have a similar feeling when you watch Saathiya. It originates from Chalka Chalka (like the thrill of love at first sight), the 2 trains crossing scene right after the song, then it gets lost in family troubles after marriage, and then it plays back as Rani comes back to consciousness during the end, rekindling the same old feeling of first love (making you teary). That's the leitmotif genius of Rehman for you! If you are a fan of AR Rehman, you might have sensed its effect 20 years back, even when you were too small to understand why.
I mean the scores used in Saathiya are essentially same the as Alaipayuthei's score (with or two motifs being changed or rewritten) but you make a very good point. Rahman does use motifs in both Alaipauthei/Saathiya and Dil Se. In fact, it's really obvious in all A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam films. However, my favourite one has to be Kannathil Muthamitaal.
Watching this video itself brought tears in my eyes. The BGM of this movie was so powerful. Thank You Cinema Beyond Entertainment for this video and knowledge.
The man who bought the concept of harmony, obligatos and polyphonic lines in bollywood is Salil chowdhury.. I agree that his background scores were not as effective as ar rahman but we have to consider that he was the one who started the trend of making melodies which follow chord progressions.. you know both rahman and ilayaraja were influenced by his legacy (both ar rahman's father and ilayaraja were musicians who worked with him).. I am writing this because when you are talking about western musical concepts in Indian cinema music.. you have to talk about one of the pioneers of that..

@@agilanraaj8337 Stalking is inappropriate. But the Indian cinema, especially Bollywood, hasn't refrained from using it for decades. The fact that even a Mani Ratnam film wasn't exempted from this is a pity! That pause wasn't unintended ;)
@@sanchitaghosh6289 How do u know it's stalking, in the first place? Nowadays ppl are using the word 'stalking' for everything as they wish. They are not aware of the meaning of the word. If getting to know a girl is stalking, then everyone will be single forever. Girls be like " He must have the guts to come and talk to me." but then they dont want them to look at them in public or "follow" them??? Like what???? Are boys suppose to read your mind to get to know you, and to know if u like him back or not???? I dont get it...In that movie, that guy was trying to get to know her. Whenever she came across him, she didn't even say "don't follow me" or showed any sign of being uncomfortable with his presence. What does that suppose to mean? Especially when there's no much of a technology developments to access and get to know about a person..How else should he tried to confess his love??? The main reason she tried to avoid him was bcs the difference in religion and she definitely knew the consequences. Not bcs she thought he was stalking her. Oh Come on ! Mani sir has nvr had the intention to teach negative things to his audience. He just shows the reality in his movies. If that looks like he's trying to promote stalking culture to YOU, then the problem is with you, not the movie or the Creator. Ppl talked about this thing for Dil Se too.. I just can't understand their thought process. Just because it happened to us and we personally went through something like it, that doesn't mean we should look at things with a suspicious and negative mind... Don't get confused with GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE and STALKING !!!

I almost cried till the end of this video. Please stop the remakes of the songs.
Its not just Bombay, you have a similar feeling when you watch Saathiya.
It originates from Chalka Chalka (like the thrill of love at first sight),
the 2 trains crossing scene right after the song,
then it gets lost in family troubles after marriage,
and then it plays back as Rani comes back to consciousness during the end, rekindling the same old feeling of first love (making you teary).
That's the leitmotif genius of Rehman for you!
If you are a fan of AR Rehman, you might have sensed its effect 20 years back, even when you were too small to understand why.
And Dil Se..
I mean the scores used in Saathiya are essentially same the as Alaipayuthei's score (with or two motifs being changed or rewritten) but you make a very good point. Rahman does use motifs in both Alaipauthei/Saathiya and Dil Se. In fact, it's really obvious in all A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam films. However, my favourite one has to be Kannathil Muthamitaal.

The man who bought the concept of harmony, obligatos and polyphonic lines in bollywood is Salil chowdhury.. I agree that his background scores were not as effective as ar rahman but we have to consider that he was the one who started the trend of making melodies which follow chord progressions.. you know both rahman and ilayaraja were influenced by his legacy (both ar rahman's father and ilayaraja were musicians who worked with him)..
I am writing this because when you are talking about western musical concepts in Indian cinema music.. you have to talk about one of the pioneers of that..
