IMO best scene was when Hritik cried after the scuba-dive. That dive changed his character from money pursuer to life pursuer.
Yes but they trashed all that effort in the crying-after-the-dive scene when afterwards Hrithik & Katrina start talking about it all openly and explicitly and Katrina lectures him on how money is not the most important crap in the world and all that cliched trite. Loses all depth! They put good effort in depicting Hrithik tearing up after that underwater dive with underwater dive proving to be a journey of self-discovery for Hrithik's character and his hidden depths & potentials to seize the moment. And later all that effort becomes useless when Katrina's character starts lecturing him.
True that.... Amongst the superstar tag holders I find only Hrithik and ranbir a little good at holding the depth in emotions
@@sdd1563 Good observation Zahabia. Yes, it should have been all implicit. Audience didn't need to learn it from a character's(Katrina's) mouth.
@@sdd1563 extremely dumb down
The problem with most hindi films
@@sdd1563 to me that lecture seems necessary
Irony - Rajeev Masand quoted this scene as "unnecessary deviation" from the story.
Prasanna n zoya said that half of the critics of india didnt understand anything....

The most accurate one line description of this channel
Boy boy boy, this comment ❤️
Saying "Michelin star stuff for an *audience* that crowns McDonalds burgers" would be more accurate

a review on this film is a must
dont worry. i hope you make a great movie (if you want to that is). would be such a treat for all of us.
Zoya is just a great director. She understands how to make good film and she’s gotten praised for it. She also got educated at NYUs film school which is just amazing but movies like this and gully boy solidify her as an all time great.
Rest in Heaven Vinit, your videos will keep us inspired forever ❤
hey
what do you mean by the comment?

You'll be forever missed and thus remembered.
Wow finally an Indian doing such vids on Bollywood
Glory for our nation
I have noticed that the subtext loving people are generally watch a lot of movie, and they have much time to give to themselves and to think sitting silently, or they have grown too mature in noticing minor changes in other's faces in different situations. This type of people are mainly introverts or old.
In India these type of people are rare due to various reasons, mainly economic and educational. This made the Indian movies mainly entertainment oriented.
Couldn't agree more !!!
plus perhaps the wide language variation - if lots of non-native and non-speakers are watching, clothes dance music etc is going to go down better - you don't go to films to suffer and study, especially if you're poor and your life is hard so it's expensive and rare
this is quite true. but if more and more movies are made like that it will become a habit to understand the subtext for 'immature audience"
Nope. You cant generalize. I am not an introvert , but here I am. People dont get me, why I dislike spoonfeeding movies eg- Humaru Adhuri Kahani, but its okay.
👍
Rest in peace, Vinit ❤
Loved the line - "Indian audiences are not intelligent enough."

@@garvita5700 You won't believe I watched ZNMD yesterday only.
@@manu123mann that is..
the most terrible thing i feel everyday...
People trying to show how much they know and how cool they are..
In reality, if just their Instagram {which is just people with no realisation how fake they are} gets deleted half of their world would vanish out.
And it is completely obvious that you watched the movie a day ago..
So do not worry
Why people have become so fake and selfish today or they were like that only and got apparent these days..
Even this man in the video..
He says these things and try to potray himself as the biggest cognoscente of cinema ever born in the history.. whether in reality he just have watched some "Hollywood Classics" at some point in his life aur fir aisi gyaan pelna chalu hogaya...
Anyone reading this..please give your views whether you disagree or agree as I need this.. this is making so frustrating ill... Even if youre not used to writing in comments please do it this time..
Super fantastic analysis. Man you and your channel will be the single reason that will uplift the next generation of Bollywood flicks.. Just need hindi version to reach a far wider audience..

Every time I watch one of your videos I end up with unexpected tears rolling down my cheeks for some reason. The part at the end of the video when you go off about what films mean to us is some straight up, no nonsense, powerful stuff. Something that I resonate a lot with. Every day I am faced with choices and crises of thought that can be effectively resolved through the use of all those vicarious experiences gained by watching and loving good films. Love, morality, life, death, happiness, nature, family, friends, history, psychology, thrill, horror, sadness, pain, etc. So many experiences and so many emotions delivered to us so that we may appreciate our lives much better, so that we may become more compassionate, kind, empathetic and loving in our quest to lead more fulfilling lives. I owe a lot to films. A lot of emotional maturity wouldn't have been possible without them. A lot of stability in an otherwise tumultuous life of a somewhat unnecessarily sensitive kid wouldn't have been possible without stories to escape to when the pain of reality became too hard to shoulder. I urge you to keep up the good work.
Ajinkya Tejankar exactly what I felt.. :)
I relate you
That's true
👏🏼
You are not alone man
Man I feel deep sadness when i realise we will never able to see videos like it anymore.
This is the second time I watched the video after 2 years. Looks like there aren't many who understand the sub-text of this channel either.
You really deserve more subscribers bro.
Same bro , I revisited after 2 years and yea...
Sir charan kaha h aapke, feeling proud that indians also are interested in Film Studies. Thank you so much ☺
Sir, what you're doing is fantastic. kudos. I am a fan.
If you're talking about subtext you must mention Satyajit Ray. ♥
Yes please mention satyajit ray. The artist from india everlived.
His way of depicting sensual scenes and intense moments was true art. He is a motivation to us all.
Damn. Close to tears, right now. That was genuinely beautiful. One of your best.
Personally one of my favorite film, few of times it happens in Bollywood that the story revolve around 3 friends are being beautiful and brilliant films like Dil chahta hai, 3 idiots, Kaipoche, and of course ZNMD, They need more films like these👍
You are making me rediscover my love for nuanced movies. Thanks.
I think Hindi movies were learning the art of sub-text with movies like these and then as soon as 2017 began movies like Raees, Kaabil, Rangoon,Jolly LLB 2,Badrinath, Ghazi,Ok Jaanu, it is beginning to fade away again. All I see is JUST exposition. Last night I was watching a movie called Bandhan. It was on the TV, I wasn't watching it intentionally. It's like Hindi movies are going back to that age. I hope 2017 brings movies like Aligarh and Piku and ZNMD soon.
Pramit Chatterjee kaabil each good film
Pramit Chatterjee A Death In The Gunj. Check it out.
really in 2017 we had just few good films..

you earned my subscription dude..keep up the good work
I got to learn about subtext when I first attended an acting workshop. Before learning about subtexts, I had great difficulty in expressing emotions in front of camera. Understanding of subtexts is necessary when it comes to acting.
I have been waiting for someone to dissect good bollywood movies. Kufos to your channel. Keep up the good work
Seen a lot of your Videos recently.....You are brilliant.
That was a great analysis , loved it👍
Stumbled across that video accidentally. Great content! It has always been a fantasy of mine to have such critical discussions around movies (without being in a formal movie course) since we spend so much time watching them.
Just when I'm starting to write 2nd draft found this. So much helpful. I can overlook my dialogues now to improve them. Thank you. 😊
Love your videos, our country needs more people who take film seriously as an art form as opposed to mindless entertainment, and you're a push in the right direction!
You just changed my perception towards movies 😊😊 truly genius.
amazing analysis.. hats off to you, vinit
Brilliant....

Why did you title it ZNMD instead of simply Understanding Subtext, since ZNMD was only one of the many examples that you gave in your video essay?
Curious.

One song affects me still after the many many years. In the film The Victors , during the scene where a young soldier was being taken to his execution for desertion, they played Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. I always have tears in my eyes whenever I hear this song.
