Hey Tug, thanks for making this video and publishing it on my birthday! I was very glad to help with checking the script and providing some source material for your editing use. Any more questions you have on Thomas media, feel free to ask!
Here are some additional notes for collectors/total Thomas nerds:
7:20 'Tis a Gift was first released on VHS in 1992.
9:49 Engine Friends also has the US Ringo dub of Trouble in the Shed (first time it was released on DVD in the US along with the two Trevor episodes).
15:08 "Tenders and Turntables and Other Stories" got retitled "Tenders and Turntable and Other Stories" (no "s" at the end of "Turntable") on the 1992 front cover and the left and right spines. This also got carried over to the 1994 Time-Life VHS cover, spines and VHS label as well.
38:00 So far, only three (maybe four) copies of the "early master" of Percy's Ghostly Trick have been found by Thomas fans. All of the tapes we've documented that have the "early master" are blue cassettes (as you mentioned) and they have the number "350441" on the lid (the blue flap that says "Do not touch the tape inside"). This means that, if you find a blue tape Ghostly Trick, look for "350441" on the lid. If it has a different number, it's likely to be the standard 2000 master instead of the "early master".
40:08 All of the James Goes Buzz Buzz tapes that Thomas collectors have found with Thomas' Christmas Party have a print date of October 14, 1994. Any print date within a few days of this might also have it. To see the print date, look on the bottom of the tape (the side that is facing out when you put the tape into a VCR). It'll have white text showing the VHS title and the date and time the VHS was manufactured. Mine and a few other copies with Christmas Party at the end say "101494" in that print date text which means 10/14/94 or October 14, 1994.
41:41 Some George Carlin Thomas Gets Tricked VHS tapes have a little sticker on the front cover that says "Kids First!". Other Thomas VHS covers from early 1995-1996 also have this sticker, so, if you see one with that sticker, it's a pretty good indicator on the front cover that it could possibly be the George Carlin master. Notably, they still use the 1992 cover style as I think the cover redesign hadn't been completed by that early in 1995. The best identifier for the Carlin tape, however, is the unique VHS label and early 1995 print date.
43:14 The font used in the HiT era title cards was actually not Flange BQ (though Flange BQ looks amazingly similar). The font is actually a slightly modified font aptly named Sodor Bold.
44:01 The Bumper Party Collection! DVD isn't the only time the UK dub of S7 was paired with Hartshorne's re-score. S8 and S9 half-hour airings on Nick Jr. in the UK also featured the Hartshorne re-scores and, interestingly enough, 12 of the 13 S8 half-hour airings were released on DVD in South Africa (3 airings were also released on VHS in South Africa) with Michael Angelis' narrations and Robert Hartshorne's music. This includes 3 of the 4 episodes featured on the Bumper Party Collection! DVD (What's the Matter with Henry?, Gordon and Spencer and Three Cheers for Thomas). The syncing between the narration and dubbing track is very slightly different between the half-hour airing versions and the Bumper Party Collection! DVD versions (this also happened in the US on the Track Stars VHS/DVD episodes when compared to the half-hour airings). All this said, you're right about one episode: Rheneas and the Roller Coaster. Bumper Party Collection! is, in fact, the only ever time the UK got a trace of Rheneas and the Roller Coaster with Michael Angelis' narration paired with Robert Hartshorne's music because Rheneas and the Roller Coaster didn't air in the half-hour airings on Nick Jr. in the UK/PBS in the US/Treehouse in Canada.
45:53 This is my opinion and I could be wrong here but I don't think Anchor Bay knew in advance that their contract with HiT was ending in 2008. HiT pretty suddenly moved its US distribution exclusively to Lionsgate in late 2008 without Anchor Bay getting much notice. Anchor Bay could have possibly planned Thomas Meets the Queen for a 2009 DVD release but never were able to do so.

I remember as a kid that really creeped me out when I first heard it on the 1992 Strand Home Video release I had rented from a local video store. I was REALLY confused what had just happened.
Then a couple days later I got a personal copy of the 1995 tape with the original 1990 Strand VCI program and saw that little Sir Topham Hatt message at the end. That ALSO confused me why the previous tape didn’t have that, but I had shrugged it off, but I was confused why I didn’t hear that audio glitch.
For years, I had thought maybe I hallucinated it until I read about that glitch being on “one version” of the episode via tv tome (RIP) and tried looking on all copies I had of the episode……. Nothing. I was even MORE confused.
Then I saw someone upload the glitched audio years later on UA-cam in 2007 and…… it all came flooding back to me when I got familiar with which version of that tape had the glitch.
Honestly it is a strange glitch but I do also hate that the Thomas fandom milked it to death and turned it into a meme.

"Jingle, Jingle, Jingle" the 19th episode of the second seaaon of Shining Time, contains Trouble For Thomas as the second featured episode, where the audio is sourced from, and the episode ends early on it, hence this error.

There’s another oddity. If you watch the Roku Channel version of Thomas & Gordon which is narrated by George Carlin, after Gordon and Thomas arrive at Wellsworth, and the narrator says “At last they stopped at a station. Thomas was uncoupled and he felt very silly and exhausted”, it changes to Ringo Starr’s narration and then it switches back to Carlin’s. It’s an odd one but it’s also pretty cool to hear 2 different English speaking narrators in 1 episode.

The "look out for the train" thing is interesting for me, because I never owned a "Thomas Gets Tricked" VHS myself, but rather I came across it when my family stayed at a motel in Georgia for a vacation, and the rooms had a small collection of random VHS's (I guess to entertain kids like me, at the time), and one of them was a Ringo Starr release of said VHS, which I want to say was my first exposure to these dubs of the episodes included. And, of course, it was one of the releases that included said "look out for the train" goof, which I distinctly remember being so caught off guard by, even back then when I was 12 years old, that I rewound that part over & over just to make sure I wasn't just hearing things. So, when it started becoming a big revelation to the fandom in the past decade or so that this goof existed in select releases of this VHS/episode, I was (probably) one of the few who had seen living proof that it really existed.
Anyway, I also have my own theory as to why this very weirdly specific goof exists: so when they were re-editing the audio for the episodes for the original US release(s) (since Ringo Starr had to redo some lines in the episodes with "Americanized" terminology), the person in charge of editing must have made an error while doing so and accidentally left a gap in the original filmed footage of the final shot used in Thomas and The Trucks (sort of similar to the "echo" goofs you brought up in this video with the "dubbing track" sometimes getting left in by accident). So, I think the person who said "look out for the train" is most likely one of the original series' crew members (maybe someone giving the camera operator directions for the panning shot up Gordon's Hill).
Now, as for why this goof seems to only exist on the SECOND release of the VHS and onward (til 2007), I have no idea, but then again a lot of the other goofs you brought up in this video are weird & hard to explain how it could have happened...

Troublesome Trucks (“Foolish Freight Cars”) and Down the Mine each have one line of dialogue cut on the Thomas and his Friends Help Out DVD I had-with the latter episode having the whole segment featuring the dialogue line cut rather than simply muted as in the former. The Foolish example was likely because the line in question (STH saying James deserves to keep his coat) doesn't make sense without the context of the previous one, but that hasn't been a concern in any other instance (including within the same tape), not to mention the episode opens by referencing the bootlace.

For that first entry, my belief is that the reason they specified Thomas in the VCS release is because since it was the first VCS tape of TTTE, they wanted to make known who was each individual character and wanted to audience to make sure of it. As for why they didn’t do it during Shining Time, maybe it could’ve been the fact that we were already introduced to Thomas by the conductor and given a summary by him before the episode, so there was no need to specify who was Thomas.

Here are reasons or my theories:
"Off Thomas Ran...": Most likely a mixup where the VHS company got an earlier US version that ended up not being used in Shining Time.
Ringo Dubs: I think (and rightly so) they wanted to still give credit to Ringo now and again, particularly in later years. Most Americans still associate him with Thomas. Best of Percy was probably a one off experiment they did that wasn't continued in the other "Best Of" videos for whatever reason. I actually did a similar thing where I made a custom Best of Henry and had Whistles & Sneezes as as "custom" Ringo US dub (easy to do as STH is only said once).
Extended Thomas Gets Tricked VHS: I reckon maybe they had planned to release this as a larger VHS like Get Along or Help Out, either as the original with bonus episodes or just some combination video like Ultimate Christmas. Carlin's Thomas Gets Tricked took forever to get out on video, not until the Halloween DVD.
US Titles: I think this was simply to make the titles more appealing or unique. You have to admit, most of the UK titles are just "Character & Character/Thing". However they did go too far with some just adding "The" like The Gallant Old Engine.
Echoing VHS: Daisy seemed to have the worst "echoing" and I wonder if that was due to that and Percy's Predicament not appearing on Shining Time Station so they had to do their own edit which made it more screwed up. The echoing could have also just been issues with audio mixing from different sources. I do know the Wallace & Gromit DVD I have is slightly slower speed because of some PAL conversion issue from the UK.
Thomas & the Jet Engine was a unique one for me as they went through the effort to put the original music back with Michael Brandon. Why couldn’t they release S7 on DVD with the original music?

    • @retroflashbackdude
      @retroflashbackdude 7 місяців тому

Interestingly, the UK dub of Wrong Road had the busy theme play while Mr Conductor explains how Gordon and Edward’s evening trains run, which was cut from the US dub. TBH cutting the busy theme from the US dub worked cause that theme felt out of place to me in that shot.

The Classic Series had the most wonderful home media. Everything about those first 7 Seasons triumphs every other era including the home media. And I gotta say, I love some of these oddities on these releases, like the weird compilation dvd “Mud Glorious Mud”. Or some of the random Ringo Starr dubs like in Percy Takes the Plunge from Best of Percy. But I can’t say I love all the oddities, like the out of sync issues for Trouble for Thomas from Best of Thomas or Percy’s Promise from Friends Help Out. And can you believe that the very first release which is Thomas Gets Tricked, has the weirdest history, from the rare George Carlin version with extra episodes (I have no reason why they did that), and the infamous “Look out for the train”. Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends was always up to something on home media.

Being a boring old UK guy, most of my VHS tapes were relatively normal, but the one that comes to mind is "My Little Mini-Vid", a tape that has the first 4 episodes for Season 1. A great tape if you're just looking to kill 20 minutes. Everything is normal except for one brief moment at the end of Thomas and Gordon. When Gordon says "Now you know what hard work means", the word "Now" is muted and because of how it's done, it sounds like Gordon has hiccups. The funny thing is, because I was a kid and this was the only release I had for many years that had Thomas and Gordon, this was just how I thought the actual episode was, so when I heard the full thing, I was just so confused...
A few years ago, someone uploaded Mini-Vid to UA-cam, so I was double check the tape. It wasn't just me having a damaged tape, it's every copy of it like every Strand Home Video release of Thomas Gets Tricked having that "Look Out For The Train" bit.

One of the best aspects of physical media was that it was a guarantee that the media was dubbed in your own language. But nowadays, when everything is streaming, it is increasingly difficult to find translated dubs and it seems that their number is decreasing while everything is being streamlined internationally into English only. And even though I understand that English is an international language and English-language media helps to learn English, it would still be good if the possibility of media availability in different languages was maintained because otherwise it is not a good development for languages that do not have as strong and large a market as English.

    1. I can also say on the DVD release of 'Best of Thomas' the audio for 'Thomas and the Trucks' is out of sync. Even as a kid I knew something was off about it, the fact you hear Thomas whistle, before it cuts to the shot of Thomas blowing his whistle.
    2. That version of 'Edward, Trevor, and the Really Useful Party' with the dubbing track carried over to the DVD release of 'Thomas Gets Bumped'.
    3. the episode releases on 'Hurray for Thomas' weird is that with those weird CGI closeups of the engines they used to transition between episodes, it always ends with a cloud of steam. Well if you look carefully on the episodes on 'Hurray for Thomas' you can see a tiny bit of the ending of that steam transition at the beginning of every episode on the release.
4.Another dead giveaway that 'Mavis' on the 'Trust Thomas' DVD is from '10 Years of Thomas' is that at the beginning of the episode you can hear the whistle SFX used from the transitions from the interviews too the episodes on '10 Years of Thomas'.
Again nice video, I will say it's so weird seeing listing to versions of episodes who's music is missing from the DVD's I grew up with, and ya 'Thomas get's Tricked' seems like it couldn't catch a brake back in the 1900's.

My neighbor had the George Carlin release of "Thomas Gets Tricked" with all the extra episodes on it. I remember he let me borrow it for a while. It was baffling and amazing

If only Digital and Physical can Co-Exist. Digital is easier to take around, but there’s a chance that it could be pulled and you can’t access the media you want to watch again. Physical media can be harder to take around, but you don’t have to worry about it being removed if you own it. Sure physical media can stop being produced, but you can still watch the episodes after its discontinuation.

This is why I feel physical media should make a comeback someday. If only they would put effort into the menus again (not that it would make physical media more popular again, but I’m sure it might help a bit).

Another deep cut of a fact you might’ve missed:
There were a number of Children’s Favourites DVDs released by HIT Entertainment in the UK during the 2000s, with an episode of Thomas & Friends being present on a large amount of such DVDs.
The Thomas episode included in the Groovy Collection DVD, that being “Fergus Breaks the Rules”, strangely used the US dub. This makes it the first and only time a the US dub was ever featured on any form of official UK home media.
Believe me, I was both confused and amazed by this discovery when I was younger. 😱

One you forgot is the fact that The Early Years, the only complete season DVD in the US, uses the UK dub for the episodes.

10:41 I have a potential theory for this. Since The Early Years (the US S1 set) got some scathing reviews on Amazon for using calling STH The Fat Controller, (which the buyers don’t know there is a UK dub), the people at HiT decided to use the UK dubs for Ringo episodes on compilation DVDs while making The Greatest Stories unless they mention The Fat Controller, and neither Thomas Gets Tricked or Edward Helps Out mention The Fat Controller. The US dub of Diesel’s Devious Deed is probably there because it mentions STH.
TLDR; HiT probably just defaulted to the UK Ringo dubs unless the mentioned The Fat Controller.
