No marketing + bad release date (for example: VC4 was released with extremely popular Monster Hunter World and Pokemons in Japan, and with Dragon Quest XI in West) + bad business decisions (VC4 should be released in 2012 on PS3 instead of VC2 & VC3 on PSP, changing setting into highschool setting in VC2, because SEGA wanted to copy success of Persona 4) + reusing same Engine in over 10 years + focus Sega on Sonic/Yakuza/Persona = no wonder this franchise is still underrated.

Fun fact: the spanish fan translation is, surprisingly, more complete in terms of content, despite its flaws. I really love this game, it's shame that we didn't have it officially.
I need to replay this again. I remember falling inlove with the premise and how the game started, even if I didnt like how some plot threads went down towards the end of the game. Personally the way I got past the absurd difficulty spike from the later parts was reclassing about 6 or so people into Snipers.... also abusing Imca's specials to fit in as many enemies on screen to bombard.
great review I played 344 hours in vc2 on the ps vita, I bought it for 19 dollars on ps store it was before I liberated the ps vita , I developed almost everything just the tank left in level 24 but it was really annoying to get the materials, and I recently started the vc3 with more than 70 hours I'm starting september
VC 3 is EASILY the best VC games and my absolute fav. It offers the best characters, best squad mates which actually involved in the story and have their own unique personality, and best story in the franchise. Some counter argument for your criticism albeit still with my own opinion and bias: 1. I think the game purposely to be unfair is good, it offers challenge which other VC game lacks while you can still counter them, heavy armour unit is easier to deal than their VC 2 counterparts (artificial valkyria unit), use repeating sniper and shoot them in the head or shoot them with your tank on their head, tanks are great since in this game they shoot accurately unlike in VC 1&4, your fault for charging them head on. The game overall is hard because you have busted tools which is special powers. Imca's special skill is extremely good to kill lots of enemies even tanks in a single turn while Riela's skill makes capture game a *lot* easier, use valkyria -> became invincible and kill camp guardian -> capture camp -> deploy shocktrooper/fencer/lancer to kill surrouding enemies/tanks -> repeat. Kurt skill sucks. 2. While yes maps are smaller, what makes it great is that you can immediately deploy and use the characters in battle, you can capture a base, retreat that character and deploy a new fresh one, it encourage you to use all the characters unlike in other VC games, i know i did which make me unlock all the character fragments and i love all the characters. I agree about the repetitiveness of the map, most of the map is reused from VC2 which is dissapointing but i personally fine with it. Good video overall, more people need to play VC 3, especially people who only play VC 1/4.
VC 3 is boring, the story is dark and too serious, the character too. I prefer and enjoyed VC 2 better, because it has personalities. the characters are fun, the story is intense especially the ending. the overall atmosphere is so much fun compared to dark, gritty , boring in VC 3.
This game franchise it's a blend of several series alike Metal Gear Solid, Phantasy Star Portable, Shining Hearts, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy Tactics, Deadly Dozen, Front Mission, Dynasty Warriors... So far sitting up everyones ideas mixing the Real-world historical reference's WWII with one "touch" Japanese otaku subculture! VERY GOOD SEGA. I SIMPLY LOVE THEIR INSPIRATION AND INNOVATION INTO YOUR GAMES... I'M AWAITS AND READY A DEVELOPED NEW GENERATION CONSOLE CAME FOR US. THANKS! (Greetings from Brazil).
Im ok with reusing the maps because it makes strategizing easier. Youre gallian soldiers so you should already know the terrain Also the master table looks intimidatig but its honeslty the easiest thing to use. You just have to *read* Each giant piece represents the class and it has 3 potentials which is obtained by rising in class rank. The place where 2 classes meet represents a super potential and in order to get it you have to obtain the 2 previous potentials that led to it. The 2 preceding potentials are of two separate classes Honeslty its the easiest thing to use since youll be ignoring mist of the table
Reusing old (VC1) maps makes sense, reusing the VC3 unique maps every other mission does not make sense though. I feel like the master table is unnecessary so I never felt pressure to use it. I'm sure it's much more usable than I made it out to be here, but I didn't feel the need to make the effort.
@@CommRio True but considering plot wise they only cross paths a fee times with the characters, it makes sense for the characters to be somewhere else. From a gaming standpoints, it great that they didnt only reuse all the maps, that wouldve been very lazy The table made building your characters a lot easier. It makes it easier for new players to know what potential each class offers considerig theres so many and now every character can have any class. I was introduced to the series through this game. So the table made it a lot easier to manage potentials instead of havig to look up a guide online of which there arent too many since the game wasnt translated oficially
It only makes sense if the context is correct. However, each stages are on different location so it kinda kills the immersion of different locations have similar stage layout. I understand the lack of map size but transferring from one area to another is annoying as it eats one CP and ends your character turn automatically.
I'm kind of surprise that Valkyria Chronicles hasn't been represented in a SEGA All Stars game considering it's a big series for SEGA so imagine Welkin and Alicia riding a tank in SEGA All Stars Racing 3 (not counting Team Sonic Racing).
It seems like even after all this time, 2 and 3 shall be relegated to the old consoles while the first and 4th games are available and even ported to modern consoles. It would be nice if we got a HD version of the 2nd and 3rd game but, I suppose sega does not want to lose money unless they are sure it will sell well.
It is legitimately a tragedy. Don't worry though when I take over Sega I'll get them going on an HD VC 2 and VC 3 port. Along with bringing Skies of Arcadia back
I gave up 40-50 hours in. I tried to do everything and eventually it burned me out. I ll probably get into it again in the near future. Just started the 4th one and I can already tell the 3rd one had better story.
Used to emulate VC3 a lot on my phone (sure, controls are awkward). It''s such a huge shame to me that I couldn't get it finished and at that time I unpurposely deleted PPSSPP alongside my saved game files (was around 72% completion rate) 😭
Loved the introduction of the series in VC1, thought the innovations weren't perfect in VC2 but at least kept the series interesting, VC3 was a great balance I felt and was sad for how long it was lost to the west. And then VC4 comes out and it feels almost like all the innovations of VC2-3 are completely lost and its just VC1 again with grenadiers and a less interesting plot/characters.
You take that back. Raz is fucking great. But yeah, I am glad VC4 is a lot more on the lines of VC1, especially as a PC title. I do, however, agree that the story would have benefitted more as something on the same timeline as VC2 instead of invading Gallia from the Federation's perspective.
@@ma76em49 it’s nothing against the cast particularly it’s just that it feels very laid back (akin to VC2) but that if anything they should be even more rattled or strict given the training/group they were fighting with. That and the whole thing with Kai is handled just really poorly from a story telling standpoint. Introducing the character as Kai only to have them randomly refer to her by the other dudes name because she’s in disguise is just handled poorly. I remember having to rewatch that scene and check her bio card ingame to understand what was going on, since they are referring to things all the characters know but the player doesn’t at that point.
I liked the plot and characters of VC4 personally. The only part that was made far more contrived than it needed to be was the Kai/Leena swap. That plot would have worked better had they just made it simpler. Leena was already the sniper for the squad, with Kai using his bond with his sister to make her be a double agent as normal. There was no need for the weird name swap nonsense. As for the gameplay, I never played 3, but I think 4 is a marked improvement over 2 because almost all the elements that 2 added felt thematically weird (like Fencers) or just unnecessary complications. 4 - while Waaaaaay too easy - is mechanically much more streamlined and concise, serving as a proper VC1.5. I think VC4 shines the most in the Expert Skirmish DLC, which offers a challenge the base game should have from the get-go in the last chapters of the story mode and its own post-game content. I hope they make VC5 and re-incorporate SOME (not all) of the stuff from 3, but mainly work on the AI and tactically decisions you can make, instead of just making more and more classes, half of which kinda suck anyway. And rebalancing. Lots of rebalancing of lancers, grenadiers and snipers so their usefulness doesn't bleed into one another.

It is true the Edy detachment got a little more spotlight, but it took a DLC for them to do so. It would have been nice if it had been in the main game.
I enjoyed this video I am a considered of this being one of the best games in the series the game made me play a lot more underhandedly which helped my tactical depth quite a lot 4 had this tactical depth but I feel it lost a lot of it when the 2nd half and all the snow set in (your not a commander your a guy with a 1000 guns to your head and want to survive so you don't fight fair you let the enemies come to you and end their unknowing lives) in the rest of the series feel like scouts were always overpowered by the headshot multiplier which lead to the scout-rush is the game perfect.....no none of the games are perfect in this series and that's fine but I think this was the 1st time they struck a solid balance(compared to vc1s rough edges and vc2s extreme easiness)
I love this game. First is classic. Second ... not so good. Fourth really good, but i still prefer the third game. Maybe because of the story, or i don't know. It has its flaws, but imagine, if they give it same attention as first game.
Hmm, this is the only mainline VC game I haven't played. I'm playing through 2 on my Vita at the moment and.... Yeah the story isn't great and Avan is just such an idiot, I'm still enjoying it. Can you tell me how I could go about getting this? Is it an emulation thing?
Yeah, comments like that are why I've held off playing VC2, but I'm sure at some point I'll cave when I'm craving that VC gameplay. I did it through emulation, but I think there are ways to patch it on PSP or Vita I just don't know them.
@@CommRio Well luckily the gameplay itself is solid and the graphics aren't half bad (though from what I see VC3 blows it out of the water) but there are a few bumps. The story and characters are rather generic, there is a grind for materials, and some bosses... whew. The Darcsen Liberation mission... Bring a fencer. But if you are wondering why the series moved to handheld, it is mainly because mobile gaming is insanely popular in Japan. Just look at how big Dragon Quest IX was.
I am literally on the last chapter now, the game had some crazy difficulty spike (Why the heck is Gallia army tougher than Imperial army when facing Nameless LOL) and the potential system I really dislike it, for tactical RPG there is too much "Roll the dice" moment (Or maybe I didn't understand the mechanics well enough?????). I like how they kind of kept their promise of "unrecorded chronicles" in the last chapter, but the decision sounded too hasty for Kurt, I wish they could have a clearer trigger to rationalize Kurt decision, for.... doing what he did. (I am trying my best not to spoil it....QAQ) I also wish that there is an obvious distinction between retreat and annihilate. Maybe when the. character/tank/container, whatever, is just retreating, do not make their sprite disappear before showing the mission complete screen. I think it would enhance the experience. (Last few chapter, you guys know what I am talking about xDDDDDD) With all the complaint, I played it for 80++ hours, dang I like the story and I am obsessed with the system despite hating some of the element (that tells you a lot jajajajaja) My biggest regret though, is playing VC1 before playing this! I think the story would hit in a whole different level! Anyone which consider playing, I think you should play VC1 first!!!!!!!
Certainly if they do remake VC3 there's a lot of balancing and gameplay that could use tuning, but it's easy to forget all that when you get swept up in the narrative and everything else going in the game.
@@CommRio Dreaming.....Dreaming hard!!!!!! SEGA PLEASE (pun Intended) I didn't own the E2 version, hope that they remake it and make it available on steam, then I can play all the DLC on my own. This large story needs to implement a timeline view on remake!
It would sell bad if those games were ported ONLY into Switch . Fire Emblem rules on Switch and killed sales of most of SRPG's on this system. The only one non Fire Emblem SRPG who sold in 1M copies on Switch is Triangle Strategy, that's all. This series MUST be multiplatform to made some profits for publisher.
I haven't played it yet but one thing that made me wary was that I heard it was brain-dead easy where you could beat half the maps in 1 turn. Is that not true?
I know it is possible to do that, but that's never been an obstacle to me because it takes playing in one specific way so I just avoid playing that way and have fun anyways.
@@CommRio i mean sorry let me clarify haha. I play thru emulator yeah but I can only play the "senjou no--" or the japanese version. can your link still help?

All of those are voluntary positions, the premise of the squad in this game is that they are a prison unit forced into service that is sent out as cannon fodder in pretty much every mission because they are expendable, if any of those organizations did that they'd be done for.

VC3 is certainly a great game, and I'm glad VC4 took some inspiration from the game. I think it really helped it overall.
I was wondering where VC2 and VC3 are
I love this game.
First is classic. Second ... not so good. Fourth really good, but i still prefer the third game.
Maybe because of the story, or i don't know. It has its flaws, but imagine, if they give it same attention as first game.
If Valkyria Chronicles 3 ever gets a proper well budgeted remake, I think I'm going to cry from joy.
@@CommRio Hopefully, they fix the repetitive level design and expand map size if they ever plan to do so.
@@suiken3149 Absolutely, the game has to improve that which I'm sure they will if they aren't trapped by the PSP's limitations.
Story aside, VC2 was fine.
I have a copy of this games but it's in Japanese, does anyone here have the English version?
Interesting
@@CommRio The gameplay's alright, but the story is groanfest of anime clichés, sadly.
(Last few chapter, you guys know what I am talking about xDDDDDD)
With all the complaint, I played it for 80++ hours, dang I like the story and I am obsessed with the system despite hating some of the element (that tells you a lot jajajajaja)
My biggest regret though, is playing VC1 before playing this!
SEGA PLEASE (pun Intended)
I didn't own the E2 version, hope that they remake it and make it available on steam, then I can play all the DLC on my own. This large story needs to implement a timeline view on remake!
I wish come to switch all 4 of them why 2 because it part of 3
It would sell bad if those games were ported ONLY into Switch . Fire Emblem rules on Switch and killed sales of most of SRPG's on this system. The only one non Fire Emblem SRPG who sold in 1M copies on Switch is Triangle Strategy, that's all. This series MUST be multiplatform to made some profits for publisher.
@@nr2676 yeah that make since
I haven't played it yet but one thing that made me wary was that I heard it was brain-dead easy where you could beat half the maps in 1 turn. Is that not true?
I know it is possible to do that, but that's never been an obstacle to me because it takes playing in one specific way so I just avoid playing that way and have fun anyways.
Where did you guys found the english version of vc3? pls share :(((

@@CommRio YOURE A LIFE SAVER!!! THANK YOU!
is it applicable to pc tho?
@@gerdinepeterscham9736 with an emulator sure but the game was only ever made for the PSP so emulator is the only way on PC to play.
@@CommRio i mean sorry let me clarify haha. I play thru emulator yeah but I can only play the "senjou no--" or the japanese version. can your link still help?
"No one in their right mind would chose this kind of life?"
What are you babling about?
USA: CIA SAD/SOG, Delta force, Navy SEALS
Soviet union/Russia: Spetsnaz, GRU, FSB (KGB)
UK: MI6, SAS
Israel: Mossad
All of those are voluntary positions, the premise of the squad in this game is that they are a prison unit forced into service that is sent out as cannon fodder in pretty much every mission because they are expendable, if any of those organizations did that they'd be done for.
@@CommRio My point was that you implied that no one would chose the life of being an off the records, black bag, plausibly deniable, special operator that has the 'freedom' to work outside international code of conduct.
But all those groups are like you said who take volunteers. You implied that the only way to make a black ops unit is to make it out of Penal troopers.
Ive watched the anime version of senjou no valkyria not knowing its based from a game valkyria Chronicles series ... I tried to played the game once ive noticed it at the time of the covid lockdown and got hooked to it and result me to play the whole series ..
In my opinion the best vc game is vc 3 i love the characters and the new pickable waifus you get XD along with the nearly perfected game formula from its previous game vc 1 and 2 .. i also love its soundtrack that i still listen to this day, specially the ending ost that always makes me cry.
That is certainly a unique way to get into the series, but glad it hooked you anyway
Is there any way to get it onto the psvita at all?
I did some quick research and there does appear to be ways, the fan translation states that it is compatible with the Vita so I'm assuming you can. I don't own a Vita though so I can't give any specifics, but I saw some threads discussing it.
@@CommRio Could you link it by any chance?

Maybe you can use adrenaline if yours is hacked
Vc 2 or vc 3??
Never played 2 so my vote has to be 3
Let me tell you how to break vc 1
Order+Alicia
All games have some kind of game breaking thing
Needs a pc port bad. My psp has been long dead.
You can play it on PC via emulation ( PPSSPP )
Imo anime portraits and cutscenes are better in this series.
The game needs an English Release first; otherwise I would have played it already.
Agreed but it seems unlikely that it’s gonna happen anytime soon
Bad at game wont go for headshot for the arm mch
Instead of stating the obvious, you could explain HOW people can play this game in English (how to do it for real, not just saying you did something).... of course people should play this but are not able to do so.
Either that or people can Google "valkyria chronicles 3 English translation" without jeopardizing the video because of piracy stuff
You can play it on a psp or pc, hell, even on a cellphone, can play it on anything that can run PPSSPP (which is the psp emulator)
