- **********UPDATE & WARNING 4-11-17**********
Several viewers noticed the BRAKE HOSE in this video was cracked and rightfully suggested to replace it. The brake hose actually DID rupture before I could get the owner to bring in the vehicle, thankfully they were able to safely pull over and no damage was done.
So, if you drive a mid 2006 Ford Escape, CHECK YOUR BRAKE HOSES! The front ones are likely cracked and ready to burst when you really need the brakes. Hopefully that saves someone from a potentially dangerous and scary situation!
****************************************************************
Time to put away the scope and get out your wrenches and hammers!
Here I show a DIY replacement of an ABS tone ring and a lower ball joint on this 2006 Ford Escape.
Part 1 where we diagnosed the cause of the ABS system fault:
• Testing Digital ABS se...
Enjoy!
I recommend to use a metal bristles brush to clean tha tone ring area or sandpaper like 100 or 150 grit to sand off the rust around the ring, using a file can damage the surface around where the ring will go in as a file can take way too much metal and leave uneven areas and cause the ring no to be able to be installed tightly, another thing is to use the old tone ring on top of the new one to hammer to install it also put some light bead of grease around the area and it it’ll go in perfectly.
Automechanics at it's best, thanks for going through the effort to let us watch over your shoulder. It's a sign of an honest teacher, when you give timely safety advice. I find it very disconcerting when some authors make it sound too easy, setting people up for dangerous failure.
Good video Ivan. I'm glad you like those wrenches and I hope they give you good service.
You are a CLASS ACT, brother 🎉
I was happy to see you protecting yourself especially with the respirator...rust dust will wreak havoc in your lungs and heavy metals will be there for life. I love Brakleen but you have to watch that also. You are young and a great tech/mech & need more of your caliber in the automotive field!! Moog is my preference for suspension parts. Nice job Ivan and another quality PHD job!
I like to give the ball joint c press a smack with a hammer either on the end of the threaded rod or the other end. I find the shock helps it move easier. I actually had a harbor freight c-press blow apart while changing ball joints on my ram 3500. I don't know how I didn't get hit in the face with the bottom half it passed between the fender and my head and landed about 10 feet behind me. Since then I tighten up the forcing screw till it stops and hit it with a hammer, I was just going at it with a breaker bar when it blew apart.
All the big stars started out the same as you, years from now I hope you remember me. LOL Good stuff buddy , man I was hoping you broke out the welder. HaHa
+STEVE ROB Don't worry Steve, the welder will come out sooner or later haha! My guess is it will be on a Chevy Truck :)
+motoYam82 whit a cracked piston ........lol:))
How you doing Ivan? That is your own little company? Good way to think outside the box brother. I hope you are doing well in your endeavors.
+RomanAutomotive Hey Roman, thanks for dropping by! Yeah I mostly focus on diagnostics but also like to use hammers and wrenches when necessary :) Sometimes mechanical work requires just as much thought as electrical troubleshooting. Where is your shop located?
"little" company?
Maybe a little Loctite under the tone ring?
Very good video explained. Thanks for your information, it helped me a lot. Thank you. I send you greetings from Ciudad Juárez Chihuahua Mexico
That's what I like to see. No lift, on your knees and the seat of your pants just like most of us. Great video Ivan, Eric would be proud. Thank you!
Iv been following you from Perth Western Australia ,you are a very smart and nice fella but man you'll have to try and get your self a car hoist, I take my hat off to you working on the floor
First would like to say thanks for the video. well shown and gave good advice. I differ from your opinion on anti-seize though. just did a break job on an '06 and it took 2 hours to get the rotor off. this included using torch and a BFH. those several swipes of anti-seize made it for several strikes from your hammer and it came off.
I bought one last year. 06’ Escape XLT. Excellent condition, no problems, no rust, clean vehicle, 136k mi.. Got it home and got under it to inspect the overall condition of suspension/steering components. There was not any problems (*other than what is described below), I was merely giving close inspection of my new purchase. Holy crap. What cheap parts Ford used! The sway bar links were so...cheap! Nothing had a grease zerk!
I decided to to some preventive maintenance and replaced everything with MOOG. Links, tie rods, etc.. While I was at it, I replaced the shocks, struts, new slotted rotors and ceramic pads. All cheap enough and easy enough to do.Also, I replaced the crappy cracked brake hoses! In this video, one can see the crap brake hoses. I would recommend replacing those as; well-cheap and easy to do.
Popped on a new set of Firestones/alignment and we are good to go! I have to say the vehicle is better than new as the MOOG “problem solving” parts are far superior. Handles like a new vehicle. 👍
So, the vehicle is like new in performance, handling and appearance. But that is not the coolest thing about this purchase...no. The coolest thing was that I bought the vehicle at a yard sale for...(drum roll)...$400.00! And my wife found a ten dollar bill stuck between the seats on the way home from the sale! Down to $390.00!!!
Details. $500. OBO on the sign. The guy thought he had an internal engine problem, said it made a horrible noise. I asked if it was a high pitch tick or a duller thud knocking. He said neither, and that it comes and goes. I told him that internal engine problems don’t come and go; but come and get worse! Got it fired up(dead batt) and it was purring quietly. He said give it a few minutes...after 5min, the noise came. I looked down and saw the tensioner and belt flapping about, pointed out to him that the problem was outside the engine, not internal ( I’m an honest guy). He pointed to his brand new truck and said, “Well, I got a new truck, so make me an offer. I said $400 and he said deal! I stopped at parts store on way home and got a new belt and tensioner. When I got home, I found the culprit that caused the tensioner failure; *bad bearing on the a/c compressor clutch($15).
These vehicles are relatively easy to work on unless...oh boy...unless the alternator neeeds replaced! That is a major pain and best left to a shop...and it’s gonna cost. Easily 3-5hrs labor. It’s UNDER the engine in the REAR! A real pain in the keister for those that may be lacking tools and experience.
In summary, save yourself some future troubles by replacing the cheesy Ford steering and suspension with quality MOOG parts!Do it now!
Of course, I’m watching this video because I have lights and codes! U2023 and C1233. Time to replace a tone ring and/or sender. Wish I had that sweet, sweet SnapOn scanner!
Good video instruction! Someone buy that man a garage heater!
Liberty. Constitution. Republic.
Five years later…
Hurricane Ian totaled the Escape.
Fully insured, got $5000. !!!
For a $390. SUV! Not bad!
Bought a 05 Freesyle with leather and all the toys for $3k
Super excellent condition!
Has a CVT; constant velocity transmission.
Took a while to get used to…uh…um…no gears shifting!
Smooth, quiet, 17mpg city and yes, fully insured! 😁👍
That ball joint was never designed to be replaced. It’s supposed to be serviced with the arm. How long did the repair joint last... ? Usually by the time the joint wears out the bushings are on their last leg.
HEY found you a short cut, check this out for the tone ring replacement. ua-cam.com/video/WfFekQUFNAs/v-deo.html
Ball joint needs to be biger or u have to welding them in the control arm suck on them
remount those tires with the worn side facing out. give yourself a bit more tire life.
Does it need to be oriented in a particular way or just set it and forget it?
I would think if one ball joint is worn out the other can’t be any good
Is the brake hose bad?
+Stian Jevnaker Maybe. I'll check when it's in for inspection soon.
You look like a scuba diver, rust dust won't kill you!!!
Those ball
Joints are fun, eh? Lol
Great video Ivan, was just wondering where you got your 3/4 breaker bar from if you don't mind me asking
+badranger2004 I think PepBoys?
Great video Ivan. Way to show that Eric O guy how a real man wrenches. Never mind those wussy air tools.
Great video Ivan I loved your motorcross style safety goggles
See what over 5000 subs and producing quality videos will do? You get swag! Awesome. I need a better air hammer too. Between you and Eric O. I spend money. :) Were all learning from the pros and your fast becoming one of them! Thanks for bringing us along.
As Eric of SMA says: if I can do it you can do it 😀
dang I was hoping for a ETCG welded ball joint repair :(
+Geoffrey Braun lol sorry to disappoint...this sucker was definitely tight enough as is!
+Geoffrey Braun If your so unhappy with ETCG repair you could donate the money to fixing it forward for the lower control arm .
You are outstanding. Thank you.
gutting to lose a tyre due to irregular wear, great video!
16:49 "Welcome to my laboratory, where safety is number one priority"
+Bullitt Garage I've heard that somewhere before...crazy Russians haha
enjoyed your video , learned a lot , thank you man
What makes one brake lock up on rt front ?
Looks good!!! If you are going to be doing "rust belt" repairs in your shop, have you considered getting something like a Snap On PH3050 air hammer. It really does make stuff move along a lot easier. You are also reaching the point where you might want to get a lift in your shop as well. Im good at spending other peoples money LOL. Chris
Man with those goggles and mask on, you look like you’re handling nuclear material compared to Eric o air grinding metal towards his face without anything at all except a slight squint of the eyes.
Hahahaha good job man,
That brake hose needs replaced as well
Good job Ivan. I'm doing front wheel bearings on my Mazda soon so I'll be thinking about you. Hey, next time you're at HF pick up a 1/2" ratcheting breaker bar, they are awesome and plenty durable for most work. Nice swag BTW.
You complained a lot about Ford, parts lasted 10 years. Also that Escape was one of best selling vehicles in mid 2000's and you seem to work on a ton of Chevy's, Dodge, Jeep and foreign cars compared to Ford. Hey, we all have our preferences.
+John Fountaine Hah the parts would have lasted even longer if it stood parked in a garage :) But a 2006 at 85k miles...eh guess I base my views on personal experience...
My 1989 Mazda MPV is still going strong on original ball joints and front wheel bearings at 240k miles!! Granted there is not much left of the lower body sheet metal, but that's still pretty impressive!
+motoYam82 I owned a 1992 DSM and about wore out my tools keeping that thing on the road. So, why not buy another Mitsubishi, a Lancer Evolution - go figure. Well, this car never breaks and if I didn't have a Subaru my tools would be idle. The two cars have the same engine and are of a similar design but one was junk and the other isn't. How does that happen? It just depends on the parts they select to put in the vehicles - maybe identical looking parts but not identical.
Just replace the cv axel
I love the prybar/hydraulic jack/air hammer action!
+Adrian Kingsley-Hughes When you work on the floor the floor jack is your best friend :)
Good Job Ivan. Your the man!
Very nice work Ivan and looks like you'll get quite a few years from that repair. Have a great evening and don't work too hard!
+stuzman52 Thanks for the comment, Terry! I predict that I'll be doing the same procedure on the driver's side in the near future :)
You say you need a real air hammer. I picked up a Snap-on PH3050A off ebay. Actually I picked up two...by accidentally bidding on both and won both. I now say careful what you bid on you just may win. I sold one of them. Moving up the a real air hammer means you need to upgrade to real bits. My cheap HF bits mushroomed inside the head and was a bear to get out. Nice videos I subscribed.
PS if you get a real hammer you need the quick disconnect with it. Cause like they said is true with the spring holder your bit will go soaring across the room if you dry fire it not against anything.
There was no snap ring on the original ball joint and neither on the replacement one? Only the press fit is holding it in the control arm?
+Alexandre Coulombe That is correct.
You have the press upside down
Don't apologize for using hand tools. Power tools are mostly for speed and of course we want to look professional. However, who is your audience, is it the pro in a shop or is it the DIY'er? I don't know the answer but the DIY'er probably doesn't have every fancy tool. So, for them seeing the job done with hand tools is a bonus.
Ivan why not use a little Blue Lock-tite to secure the tone ring because its a bit loose. And the ring have on one side a tapered side, that makes it easy to fit. O, eah learn from the pro's use a lugnut to keep the rotor fixed when mounting the caliper. Well done
I installed a new Moog ball joint recently on my 2009 Escape. It popped out on its own just a few days later (Yes, I use the correct part). I ended up having to tack weld it in. By any chance did you run into the same issue?
I appreciate this video. Working on my 2nd Toyota Avalon with a wheel bearing that came apart and destroyed the original tone ring. Trying to go back in with one of those Dorman aftermarket ones as well, for the first time. Clueless how to get it on there, so this helps a lot!
You can get a complete lower control arm with new bushings and ball joint already installed at Autozone for $59.99, the quality is very good, and that CV shaft should have just been replaced, and of course the complete strut. I`m replacing all the suspension and brakes on my 2005 Escape this week, can`t wait to get into it.
If you weren't saving the balljoint why didn't you just use a pickle fork...
Does anyone know the torque specs for 08 Ford Escape front wheel drive on ball joint pin, outer tie rod castle bolt, and strut mount bolts? I've looked everywhere. Please and thank you. This video was very helpful.
Eric O. maybe the god of auto repair. However, I haven't overlooked the fact that he has a lift. Guys like you and me are left to suffer and just because he can do it, doesn't mean we can do it.
Hi nice video¡¡ One question for only change de abs dent ring is necessary to change de joint ball or only was casuality that was wrong too? Or it is destroyed in the process?
Повеселила русская попса :)
you need big nasty in your arsenal Ivan! would that small air compressor hold up to it I dunno. glad to see another repair video . best of luck man.
+Adel Jeffrey (Jeffrey's Auto) An air hammer is actually a rather low volume air application. Ivan would be able to get away with using his small compressor. Die grinders or anything that spins a turbine are air hogs. For those you need a big dog compressor. I have a nice big Quincy since I paint and do body work. I need it to power my SATA spray guns and AirVantage Air Sanders. Anything smaller than two stage 80 gallon 5 hp would be useless for me.
SATAMAN Schmidt thanks for the info man . I didn't know that!
What other occupation could you be working with a 4 channel lab scope one minute, and a B.F.H. the next, how could you not love it? Thanks for taking the time to show people the correct way to do this procedure. P.S. I use dingle berry hones on a lot of components, it really helps remove rust and small burrs, they make these hones in several different sizes, they really help on ball joints, and u joints .....and of course brake cylinders ......... so on & so forth, any way it helps me. Obviously don't go crazy with the hone cause no one should ever weld them in place ever!!!! just a little tiny quick pass with a hone that isn't to big.
Cheers,
Check out Snap-On ball joint press. Due to special design with snap rings, adapters stay together and not fall out.
great vid ivan... even though you were raggin on this escape. truth is there are no perfect cars, for that we should be thankful. maybe next time try to freeze the ball joint while you do the tear down so it goes in very easy... or just use that 3/4 breaker :)
I was thinking of buying the BlueDriver Bluetooth OBD2 scanner. What's your thoughts on it?
Just curious why you and ERIC O bash doorman parts so bad? I use them at my shop and have not had an issue. If I do then they stand behind them.
+Nick Palmer Yeah, sometimes there is no alternative so aftermarket parts are the only option. Definitely better than nothing! But i have had several comebacks due to bad quality parts (generally they last about a year).
+Nick Palmer --dorman is cheap chinese crap. you get what you pay for!
+Nick Palmer I can't speak for all dorman parts. I bought a set of steering wheel rebuild gears for my Maxima. Well, the machining on the threads was wrong, so much so that I had to file it down for couple of hours, so they can work without binding. Turns out Dorman knew about that. Finally 6 month later, they retooled those parts, so I am getting a new set of those gears to try them out.
I think in general Dorman has great intent in providing solution for badly designed oem parts and be able to buy just the failed component, vs a much more expensive entire new oem part. However the execution maybe a bit shy of perfect.
i think this was a well done video.also great camera job nice to see whats beeing done...but please next job dont snug up with the air gun on the axel. and use your torque wrench.
Where did you get those long wrenches....I use to had the SK long wrench for over 35 years, but I can't afford SK any more.
maybe soon your customers will spring for some new brake pads... shezzzzeee
You can tighten up tolerances by using a center punch to knurl the surface and then use red Loctite on the surface before reinstalling the ring. Be careful how large and how deep the knurling goes or the ring won't fit.
That's a good job but I have a hard time concentrating with the cracks in the brake line and the rip in the CV axle boot may want to repair them while you're doing that.. :)
Have you ever tried placing the new ring in a pan of boiling water for 5 minutes or so ? I wonder it it would expand enough to slip right on !
Glad to see you have been able to upgrade to a Astor Nano !
Save your pennies for your own "Big Nasty" !
Good job. Work smart
But no torque spec. For each bolts?
With out ain't size rotor when had been in 3 pices
Whaaaaa?????? Afo I went colleg I cun effin say enganeer now I are 1.
Great repair!!
@10:00 Min. I would have put the jack under the hub to get the ball joint loose.
OMG...………………………………...You have to be kidding me...……………………………………...Find a new line of work...……………………………………….lmmfao
I did.
austin reeves what’s the problem here??
Здравствуйте как можно с вами связаться? У неся эскейп не могу шаровую поменять 😒 спасибо
I think you doing a fantastic job with your safety
Nice fix - It brought you back to the wrenching side of the business.
still here 2021. great stuff man, thanx
Hahahahaha for the welding in ball joints comment!
Have you tried using a ball joint seperator tool?
Snap On long bore air hammer breaks everything loose for me!
Maybe not impact the axle nut on? I though this can cause premature bearing failure? Good video tho...Makes me feel a lil better about my ball joint jobs....
+TerminatorD4 As long as the torque is close to "factory spec" you should be OK :)
good. diagnostic. amigo
hey Ivan great video what's your address so we can send you some more swag
Brake clean who was it that love to use that???? emmmmmm
Another quality video lil Erick o in the making lol
Second time watching 5/ 7/ 2020
so what was Eric O's lower control arm trick?
Escape came into the shop with bad ball joints, I ended up replacing both lower control arms with new balljoints to make life easier. tried and tried pressing lowers out but they refused!
+Rob ert Getting the old ones out is the "easy" part...getting the new one back in...now that's the fun part haha
Drop by HF and yourself one of those 25" Pittsburgh Pro breaker bars. Leverage is always a big help.
+theoldwizard998 The new one with the plastic handle is actually very nice and doesn't flex like the old model did. Don't forget your 20% coupon.
Nice :)
Should do the greasing after get the stud on!
Ivan you used to say safety third.
Your comment at 29:05 about it being a Ford and the axle coming back out was awesome. I have Ford friends that I need to show this video to. 😉
I just tell it like it is lol
I just did this on the drivers side including the brake hose. After cleaning most of the rust where the tone ring sits, I sprayed some high temp rust resistant paint to help prevent a re occurrence although I doubt this will be on the road in another 10 years. Should I need to do another one I'll definitely borrow the tools that some auto parts stores offer to make the job easier. There were no major issues.. hardest part was seating the new tone ring. First time for me so I went slow.. a couple of hours including greasing the sway bar links that I replaced last year.
Replacing one brake hose is like replacing one stop light. They all have the same amount of wear and tear. Replace them all, and completely flush the brake system.
cool music at the end, for it Like
Good video and nice calm work 👍
Great video man! For what they cost think I would have just changed the cv axle.
You still get what you pay for...a cheapo axle might vibrate out of the box and start clicking within a year. Not recommended based on experience :)
I liked the songs, who sings?
Now where did we see nano and kroil?
sweet video man! thanks!
