Testing Digital ABS sensors: Ford Escape

  • This 2006 Ford Escape has an ABS light on the dash and a trouble code C1234 "Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Signal Missing."
    I show how to perform a complete ABS system diagnosis, starting from a test drive to manually testing the sensor with an oscilloscope.
    This turns out to be a perfect example of why you should NOT change parts just based on trouble codes!!
    This vehicle has digital-type ABS sensors, which are becoming the norm for most newer vehicles. Testing digital ABS sensors with an oscilloscope is not as easy as the traditional AC pulse generator VRS-type sensors. We go over a few quick tricks to set up your scope and what to look for when testing these digital-type sensors.
    Here are two great videos on digital ABS sensors from ScannerDanner:
    • How to test a digital ...
    • How to test a digital ...
    The repair of this Ford Escape will be shown in Part 2.
    Enjoy!

    Haha to funny I uploaded a Jeep today with a C1044 and almost the same waveform. It was a bit of a bigger toilet than this rust free cream puff. I also left everyone hanging too haha. They are gonna think we are up to something lol. So that waveform was a little tricky to pick up at first glance huh. The broken tone rings on A/C type sensors are definitely much easier to see. Great diag. man!

    At higher speeds the dropouts seem further spaced, likely is the tone ring, anyways, how do I test this when I can’t even move the vehicle? And will the light be on after a reset? I seem to have dead sensors but can’t spin the wheels and only have a single external connection waveform meter

    Nice vid Ivan. When you get your next scope would you consider a Pico scope, it would have to be rolled around on a cart but I did see a guy in England with the setup , looked awesome, well of course he makes vids with it .

    thanks Ivan for great video, a good tool on the Verus is to use the graphing multimeter to plot the frequency maybe that would have shown the drop out clearer many thanks sandy

    Nice job Ivan. Thanks for pointing out the scope subtleties. I'll definitely be applying them to my Vantage. We definitely have to use our senses and only a fool would ever discount visual inspection.

    Excellent video! Thank you it helps a lot .. I have just bought a 2005 escape. And I don't have all the Fancy equipment. But would this also show itselft in the form of the rear wheels locked together like a positrac diff? When you make a u turn it drags or scoots one tire... There doesn't seem to be any differential between the rear wheels... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  5 років тому +1

      Wow didn't know they came available with a locking differential lol...I would lift up the rear end with the car off and turn one wheel by hand; the opposite one should spin the other way freely.

    great video...liked how you got the signal with ac coupling...scanner danner used an amp clamp to get his signal on a jeep...amp clamp will allow testing on both wires..but your way would allow 2 channel testing ...known good signal and faulty signal....this type of sensor maybe the future for all digital signals....a two wire square wave sensor...this will give the engineers extra wiring room for more smart modules...maybe an over engineered license plate lamp computer on the CAN...lol.....great testing skills

    Nice Job Ivan. These Fords ( and a lot of the GMs ) are Notorious for breaking tone rings. I replace them quite often. The GMs although play havoc with the drivability.

    It's a great weekend when I get to watch SMA & PHD ABS diagnostic videos after removing the carbs off my ZL600. Eric will have his Part 2 posted tomorrow so maybe after I rebuild the carbs tomorrow I'll get to watch round 2 of SMA & PHD ABS repairs...:-)

    Just upgraded to a pico 4 channel and it is awesome but expensive
    Keep it up

    i escape with a cracked tone wheel that never happens haha, or cracked brake hoses

  • @theoldwizard998
    @theoldwizard998 8 років тому

    I am 90% confident that that IS a variable reluctance sensor ! You can mot reference the signal to ground. You need to measure a "difference" between the 2 wires. Likely there is a way to do this on your 'scope using 2 inputs.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  8 років тому +2

      +theoldwizard998 The second wire on the sensor is just a common ground. This type of ABS sensor actually has internal circuitry to transform a typical AC variable-amplitude signal to a two-state fixed amplitude signal. There is no way to see the raw AC signal on a scope without cutting the sensor open :)

    Cracked brake lines and cracked tone rings are super common on this gen Escape. Dorman makes just the tone ring to keep people from having to constantly buy axles.

    I replaced one last year, drivers side. Had the same symptoms now, another one to replace. I have a pit in the garage, a lot easier to just go underneath and look then fool around with a computer. I mistakenly thought you were going to repair it in this video.

    • @donmoore7785
      @donmoore7785 4 роки тому

      He didn't "fool around" with the computer. He is showing how to to use it as a diagnostic tool. In other words, this is an educational video. That flew right over your head. Why did you assume he would repair it in this video - the title says "testing ABS sensor".

    • @ngzcaz
      @ngzcaz 4 роки тому +1

      @@donmoore7785 And I'm saying it was faster and easier just to go underneath and look at it and know for sure which is what he did in the end anyway.. Computers can be great aids in diagnostics and sometimes personal knowledge is faster and better. Plus there may be more than one explanation for a certain code. Sorry if I stepped on your computer oriented toes.. Sometimes you have to get off your butt and take a look. It won't hurt you.. I'm pretty sure this guy knows how to fix it.. I'd like to know how to fix it instead of............. wait for it.... fool around with a computer. Did that fly over your head or was that direct enough ?
