Thanks for the video. I had the same issue with our 2010 Escape. Front left tone ring was split missing a tooth. I Tig welded it up, then used a cut off wheel to make new tooth. It may be worth noting to disconnect battery before welding on a vehicle. Weld current can travel through the Chassis and fry electronic components.
My 2005 Escape Hybrid has the same problem. Great idea to weld it. I will try that repair method. I have a Dremel tool to cut the teeth. Thanks for showing your dog too!
I didn't mean to tear down dealership technicians, back in the 70s when I was a mechanic at a GM dealership, we tried to repair whatever we could and diagnose every problem that came in. This was in the early days of emission controls too. We didn't have computers and the set down repair times were only estimates. Yes the dealership would have been to just replace the whole drive line, in my day we would have welded the pickup ring same as in the video. There are really good mechanics out there, but usually not at the dealerships.
I basically agree with both you guys. I think there are plenty of really good mechanics at the dealerships, but as Rick implied, they simply don't have nearly the freedom to get creative (in the interest of saving the customer money) that Mark has.
I have a 2001 left front ring came loose not broke so I cleaned up all the rust and crap used some epoxy and glued it back on .......so far so good......it's been almost 10,000 miles ...
The tone rings used to be harder to get but they aren't any longer. You can pick them up pretty much anywhere. Also, a failed ABS sensor can throw a code in the same way and you'll notice it with the perpetual ABS light as well as the 4X4 light blinking at timed intervals. If you see that, it's a ring or sensor and if the rings look good it's a sensor. I used a scanner to let me know my LR sensor had failed. After 5 years of ownership I am about to replace it finally lol. I'm tired of seeing that light blinking every time I drive.
I've got the tone ring on order, but i ripped out the old one to prevent it from colliding with the sensor and to keep the abs from freaking out when stopping.
Just wanted to comment it appears to be a common problem. Happens when rust or ice builds up under the ring causing it to expand and break the cheap metal used to make the ring. I replaced my axle with one that had a built in tone ring problem solved. You will need to clear the code or do what you did. Imo clearing with a scanner is more likely better option as to not delete any other underlying codes that may be stored. Note that Im not a mechanic but im mechanically inclined but thats my opinion on that. Seems like its common
2005 Ford escape All wheel drive doesn't work. Check the fuse it looks good. If the tone ring is broken will that cause the all wheel drive to not work?
Ok I fixed my tone ring and the abs light and yellow exclamation mark went out but I still have a service 4x4 message showing. How do I get this to go away?
So my 06 escape hybrid had the abs light and the (brake) light on n it says low brake fluid and service brake system like yours. Idk if the tone ring broke(I hope not) but I filled a little bit of brake fluid, and the low message went away but the other message is still there. Would the cold snowy weather just be throwing the sensor off? Cause I’m driving for an hour tommorow and I hope nothing goes wrong. But I drove to autozone to get the brake fluid and the hybrid system and brakes works like they should.
I have a mazda tribute hybrid, and on hot days the abs and brake light come on and says regenerative brake system disable but if it sits for a few hours it isn't on until it is driven for a few miles if it's still hot outside but won't come on if night and cooler, have any idea why? It would be much appreciated if you can help.
I saw someone fix this same problem, and I think it was on an escape. He replaced the ring though- I think it was a bit of a pain to get the new one on there.. had to be heated to get it to expand, and still didn't want to go on easily.
I'm having the same problem and my dealership didn't give me that option, should I get a second opinion from a private shop??? Can you please advise? I have a 2009 ford escape v6
I was looking for somebody who had done this... I was a little nervous to try it on my own because of electronics on board. Probably would have saved a little time over replacing...
What issues beside the lights being on, does the broken ring cause if any? My 2008 has issues and no one can find the problem. Brakes are soft and go almost to floor before they catch. Had the break line bled, didn't help, all ne pads and roter, didn't help. Could the abs sensor cause this?
@@loribott6119 Ford has a specific bleed procedure for ABS brakes, you often need a dealer-level scan tool or similar to initiate it. The ABS module basically has to pulse itself on and off in order to get air out. Some people say you can take it on a dirt road and mash the brakes, and it'll do the same thing.
@@imitt12 interesting! I had to mash the brakes, I almost stoo up hitting brakes to miss hitting some idiot pulling out in front of me, that's when the problem started. Then they came back when I drove it far. Then they went out again months later and never came back. Ugh.
Every time one of the grooves moves past the wheel speed sensor, it sends a pulse to the ABS control module, and the ABS computer counts the pulses to determine how fast the wheel is turning. It compares the speeds of each wheel, and if it sees one moving faster than the others it'll pulse the brakes on that wheel to slow it down.
They split from rust building up on the axle under the tone ring over time & causing it to expand & snap... common problem & not that hard of a job to replace... pull axle... sand the rusted area.. spray lube.. tap it on ... replace axle..
This kind of creativity is one of the great rewards of watching your channel, Mark.

Smarter than a dealership mechanic these days. Nice job.

Thank you, I'm having this problem with my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. You are awesome
Same here! She's lurching forward and the stability control keeps kicking on during cornering

You can get tone rings at part houses for around $11.00 on my tone ring for my escape it takes a 44 tooth ring.

hi, I believe I get the exact same problem. How much did it cost if it is a sensor issue?
Nice.the tone ring is a bit of a pain to get out.good job.
Thank you. Just welded mine saved me a ton of money. Should get me by for a while.
Nice !
Tone ring, approximately $8, easy to replace
I've got the tone ring on order, but i ripped out the old one to prevent it from colliding with the sensor and to keep the abs from freaking out when stopping.

The dog is adorable! Maybe he wanted to help fix the car?
Thanks I had already replaced the master cylinder and still had same issues I’m sure this is the issue on my 2012 .
Cute dog. New rings are cheap and easy to find. Hope the weld holds up.

It's so nice to have a shop doggy!
I siliconed my 03's. To this day, maybe 10 years later, no problems.

Is it safe to drive for a couple days before getting the tone ring replaced?

how do you get the tire monitor system aler to go off on this same car???
don't buy a car with that shit in the first place

Would this issue cause a 4wd service message to pop ut
Worked for me so far!

Sounds like your master cylinder is bad.
@@amberschlegel7153 , had it checked, it's not. Thanks though.
We bled the brakes, checked Master cylinder, new pads a rotors. At my wits end with it

You are probably planning on selling it what a shoty fix
Have any advice for someone trying to fix a 2001 escape that has a busted abs module and a leaky master cylinder?
drive it right off a cliff, for real, getting those abs modules out is unreal
Same exact thing happened on my '08
Same, but 2005 . Mine was just missing 😅 . Bought it used
What is the purpose of the Tone Ring?

I done too many times I just go to the guy that refurbished axles get the new ring and glue it with epoxy sometimes I will pull the whole new axel
It's a common problem auto zone has tone rings for 8 bucks just got mine last night lol 😂
What could be cause of rt front caliper locking up ?
Nice Brittany
Could this be the reason why the brakes not working properly?
This could cause your ABS to work even on dry surfaces or when you don’t need it. Kinda feels like the brakes are slipping.
That happened to my 2003 Escape and I just used epoxy on it and solved it.
Seriously??? It’s a $20 tone ring. Yes a common problem. Dealer sells them.
They are cheap and easy to replace. Just do it right!!!
They split from rust building up on the axle under the tone ring over time & causing it to expand & snap... common problem & not that hard of a job to replace... pull axle... sand the rusted area.. spray lube.. tap it on ... replace axle..
That repair cosr me $400 dollars. The repair shop decided it was best to replace the cv axle.
Good video... I liked the doggie too
Liked for the video, subscribed for the dog lol
Tone rings are like 10 bucks
Aww Stella cute
Or spend the 9 dollars on a new one?
MORE DOG in the video..... :)
These cost about 13 bucks why the fuck would you weld it lpl
