  • Replacing the outer tie rod end on a 2001 Ford Escape. Also includes Mazda Tributes and Mercury Mariners. Process is pretty much the same for most front wheel drive vehicles.

    Nice video, really helped. The only thing I did differently is my jam nut seemed to be a lot tighter than your example. So I used a pipe wrench, worked perfectly. Thanks

    Great job! Thank you for all of your effort to create this great instructional video...shooting and editing video isn't as easy as you make it look.

    I just tried replacing these on my '08 Escape. Apparently, the Escapes were made with TWO different sized tie rod ends! 14 mm thread diameter, and 16 mm. My car has the 16mm, and the tie rods I got from Autozone were made for 14mm. I had to put the old tie rods back on!!! Pain in the ass!!

      Just had the same experience '08 Escape Hybrid. O'reilly shows 2 listings for tie rod ends, have to look pretty close to see 1 says 16mm, the other does not specify. At first glance the only difference appears to be the price.

    Damn dude. I am doing the same R&R on a 2008 Escape and was hoping to get a tip on removing the original TRE from the inner unit at 6:28 in your tutorial. Apparently they are glued or cemented because the ones I am working on do not simply unthread like yours did. It took me almost 1-hour to remove the DS using a cheater bar on a crescent wrench, holding the ITE with the largest vice grip that I had. The PS won't even come off in that I may have to replace the whole TR assembly to make a successful repair. I'm so angry, I have the worst luck. My PB Blaster does nothing to loosen the bond. There was no residue left on the joint that I mangaged to repair as the new TRE replacement threaded on easily. But the originals do not want to budge. I mangled the inside TR shaft as my vice grip was not even strong enough to hold the torque I was applying. And yes the jamb nut was loosened. I tried to tighten the orig TRE just to see if I could make it budge and ZERO movement. Do you know of a good solvent or alternate method to free the TRE?? I even sprayed paint stripper on the edge of the TRE and still got nowhere. I mean it's cemented on the inner TR. I will have to see about removing the perfectly good ITR and replacing the whole assembly because of my bad luck.

      Thanks for watching! I've never had problems with a tie rod end seizing up like that...I would be kind of pissed as well! Did you try heating it up a little, then tapping along the tie rod end? Are there any bad spots on the bottom of the tie rod end, where it looks like it was struck? It could be very slightly bent to where it won't turn either way.

      A few years late but I just running into the same problem. Sooner or later, I've always been able to persevere and get something unstuck, but not this time.

    So first I had to cut the f***ing bolt off with an angle grinder because it was rusted through, then I had to torch the nut and use three wrenches to unscrew the tie rod end. Simple job right?! 😭😂

    • @GreaseMonkeyFever
      @GreaseMonkeyFever  2 роки тому

      RUST...a Ford characteristic, putting it nicely. My Escape's subframe is eaten up with it. Sorry to hear about the struggle...but you got through. Enough to make the Pope cuss...but makes a good story later when someone asks if you've ever changed tie rod ends on your car. Thanks for watching, omniXenderman!
