- On Sept. 27, 2014, the Studio Backlot Tour closed at Disney's Hollywood Studios to make way for future experiences. Here are highlights from the final tour given, comprised of guests and former Backlot Cast Members.

I was standing in line with my brothers next to an inconspicuous looking door while in line for the back lot tour a few years ago. Suddenly a cast member appeared and asked if we'd like to be in the preshow. I got to be the guy with 800 gallons of water dumped on me! They told me to pretend to order a pizza while on the phone so it looked like I was saying something. Definitely one of my best Disney memories.
Edit: And they really emphasize that you should not look to your left lol.
My dad and brother were the ones choose for it in 2001, memorable memories on a video camera that died on us, have the tapes secured somewhere but can't find any machine that can read them so I could acquire them in computer format, the tapes were Hi-8mm they look like a standard K7, but not exactly, camera that took the images was a Canon UC1.
I did it back in 1992. I was surprised how not wet I was after.
I was lucky enough to be able to do that part too.

Yeah my father and I got to do it as well. He was captain duck, I did the other thing, where you pointed at the ships.
This made me tear up. It's so sad to see a classic from opening day go. Seeing everyone cheering and getting excited over it just really makes me happy. It was appreciated up until the very end. Love love loved that ride so much.
And when I say tear up I mean bawl when the last team drove away.
Great Movie Ride is closing next month.
The park will be around for a long time who knows maybe one day they'll do an anniversary classic atrractions bringback thing and will see it again...stranger things have happened
Everyone on board the last ride was a cast member who worked the attraction. Proud to have been there.

It’s so much more sad to see the last running of the attractions that involve cast member interaction because you can see how much care they’ve put into the attraction and how much they love their job. Another one like this is the final show of Lights, Motors, Action.

Of all the non-thrill rides at DHS (which there isn't that much of, save for Great Movie Ride, and Toy Story Mania... if it counts) I have experienced, this studio tour, was the most... true to form in terms of the movie making process.

Hollywood Studios closed The Great Movie Ride on August 13. It’s gonna become Mickey And Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
So sad to see this go. It was always one of my favourite rides along with Maelstrom in Norway. I am going to forever wonder what happened to all of the props.

I loved that ride so much as a kid I was so excited that is was still there 2 years ago when I went back. Sad that it's gone now.

You have to love the crowd at Hollywood Studios no booing no badness they enjoy the Last Ride and are excited about it. And Applud the cast members this is why I love looking at these moments.

I went on The Backlot Tour twice when I was younger. God,it’s been awhile! I hope Toy Story Land will be great!
Great memories and thank you for sharing. Here's hoping for something amazing to replace this attraction like Cars Land or a Star Wars.
All I worry about is where all the vehicles and other assorted props from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" are going to go. They've been sitting there for 26 years, and Disney has completely forgotten that it exists, so they maybe sold....

I wanna know whats going to happen to Walt Disney's Mickey Plane that he used to look at sites for Disney World! :( It is like one of the most important pieces of Disney history ever. This video made me very sad. I DONT WANT A STAR WARS TAKEOVER! :( :(
Vigo 894 Id really like to see a Disney History Museum within Walt Disney World. They certainly have plenty of room and money.
I would pay buckets of cash for the Flight of the Navigator ship. Hopefully they will scatter the props around the park! It is a 'movie' park!
Sad to see it go but looking forward to the new attraction(s).

😢 sucks to see the MOST important attraction being gone.
That last and final ride is definitely like the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour 2011-CURRENT but the Disney Backlot Studio Tour featuring Catastrophe Canyon, was open from 1989 to 2014, and it was closed for good!!!!! HOORAY! YAY!!!!!! WOOO!!!!!!

Disney’s Studio Backlot Tour is CLOSED in 2014 to make way for Toy Story Land in 2018. They’re also closing Pixar Place sometime or next year or so.
I had no idea this attraction was closing but glad I did get to experience it in August

Hollywood Studios Backlot Tour was fantastic i rode it November 13th 2003
I remember the true old backlot tout from 89' and it got scaled down so much it was a bore.
What was different in 89? Just curious.
J Hall I wasn't alive then but apparently there was a walking section of the tour which is now toy story mania and the new york street, the trams used to drive thru there
J Hall It was a two hour tour that also included Residential Street.Also it was part of a real working Motion Picture and Television Studio.
J Hall it was behind scenes of also the shows taped at MGM. It was 2.5 hour long experience then.

I've aways loved maelstrom
Some people actually would go on those rides every chance they got because they had some very special memories attached to those rides. I was lucky enough to ride on this very last tram with a couple who met when they work working the ride and now they are happily married. I grew up on rides like Backlot and Maelstrom. They hold a special place in my heart and they always will. So no, not everyone "just all of a sudden care(s)." Also most of the people on that tram had worked The Backlot Tour and were all very sad to see it go.

So glad to see it put out of it's misery. It had been whittled away to a sad fraction of it's former glory and had become irrelevant without the working studio in which to tour. I am sorry for the fans though. Walt Disney never intended for anything to remain static but always changing and growing and it was time for a change. Great 3 part fan tribute on martins vids channel here on youtube. Fascinating to see the maps showing the expansion and subsequent curtailment of the tour bit by bit. Check it out. I'm pretty sure Star Wars land will take over the Echo Lake area including Indiana Jones, American Idol, and the Sounds Dangerous building. I heard that the Streets of America area including Backlot Tour, Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground, and Lights Motor Action will become a Toy Story and/or Pixar area.
I feel sad, I never got to see this 😭😭

Although it is sad to see the backlot tour go, I look forward to seeing something new to replace it. Change is good, especially for those of us who have been visiting WDW for so many years. We must remember that there is a new generation of young people who do not relate to some of these older attractions.
I stand on my argument that one of Walt's original ideas for these attractions was to bring guests on a memorable tour THROUGH and INTO the movies. That doesn't just mean rides and attractions that tell stories, that also meant showing the public the making of true movie magic. First the animation building with the tours went, and now this. I am disappointed in Disney now.
Unfortunately, nothing really new is happening in place of the Backlot Tour. Instead of making a new ride or attraction, Disney decided to build another track for Toy Story Mania in attempts to make the wait times shorter. :(
Sierra Spencer The Backlot Tour was a waste anyway. Especially after they took out half the tour for the stunt show.
Shoot! I never got the chance to ride this! I went to Hollywood studios last winter and they were closed. I was hoping to ride again next time, but now that they are closing it, I won't ever get that chance! :'(
It was sad to see it go. BUT, its pretty close to Star Tours and I hope Disney makes Star Wars land there and also get of Lights Motor Action for the room!

Why did it close
My favorite thing on this ride was always the wire mesh Hidden Mickey... I'd pay for that if I could if it's being auctioned and get a fish tank to keep it in here at home as a memory of what once was.

Anyone know why this closed this and what's gonna happen to all the props and stuff? :/ Cause I mean I would hope they keep the props and put it on display again either in a ride que, prop display or a museum. I would hate to see it go a private collector or just end up a Disney Vault somewhere never to be seen again. :-:
I'm not sure what they'll be doing with the props, but I know they closed it to make room for another track of the Toy Story Mania ride, in attempts to make the wait times shorter. They would probably move some of them into the wait line for The Great Movie Ride, I suppose, but you never know!

I work in film. The props will either go to a warehouse and knowing Disney they will either put them in a warehouse and put them on display somehow in the future or possibly auction them off to a collector.

Likely either one of three things
1. Cars "refreshed" for another attraction/entertainment option at another park.
2. Sent to scrap
3. One of the 3rd party warehouses that sell Disney memorabilia will prob get their hands on the cars.

I remember I think at the end of this ride at one point they had the chicken coop that Miley Cyrus remodeled in the Hannah Montana movie!
They could just be upgrading it and keeping it a secret mabye a lot cooler hopfuly.....

Nope, STAR WARS related.
Frozen is why Maelstrom in Norway was shut down.
It's been rumored that carsland or Star Wars land will replace it but no official word on what will replace it

alexander1485 Lol no universal made there’s like ten or more years before this. The park was made as competition with universal, and since universal has basically won with the whole backstage park thing Disney is changing Hollywood Studios to bring in the movies

They might as well call Disney World, Toddler World because eventually all the classic Disney rides will be removed and replaced by rides that are extremely baby-fied. I understand Disney has to change with the times but I thought Walt Disney intended for most of the attractions to cater to a general audience. Not just kids. Adults enjoy Disney World as well and should have attractions that cater to them too but at this rate, everything will turn into kiddie land. You can call me selfish all you want but the Disney company needs to understand that there are adults who enjoy Disney World as much as kids.
