Gods, Gilmour's guitar can always make me cry. The man is a musical god. He's a large part of why PF is still my favorite band.

Pink Floyd is incredible. If you want to keep doing songs, I’d recommend “Time”, “Money”, “Wish You We’re Here”. But, a huge part of Pink Floyd is their thematic and connected albums, The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most acclaimed and famous albums of all time, I think everyone should hear in their life. Great reaction video!
Suffi loved the guitar solo so "Comfortably Numb" would be a great one as well for what I consider to be one of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

I think the interpretation is far broader: it‘s about childhood (when the light was brighter and the taste sweeter and you had high hopes for your life) and then getting older, reaching their dizzy heights of that dreamed-of world and then being „consumed by a slow decay“
Pink Floyd is one of the deepest and most amazing rabbit holes you can ever fall into.
Pink Floyd recorded a show from 1994 called Pulse. I'd recommend any song from that show, the most obvious being Comfortably Numb and Sorrow. Floyd's albums are masterpieces, but this live show is somehow more powerful and beautiful.
The album is called the Division Bell, its theme is communication. That's on the album cover. The division bell is a feature of Parliament where a bell is rung to signal the time to vote. In this song it is used as a device of division, literally, choices have to be made and at what cost. The song looks back to the simpler things in life, the specifics of which are particular to the band and I think to Gilmour in particular. His wife Polly wrote the lyrics.
You stopped the song short though. If you let the song fully finish (the album version) you would hear Pink Floyd's manager Steve O'Rourke phoning the Gilmour household and David's young son, Charlie answers the phone. He must have answered while the answering machine was running which is how the call got recorded. Well Charlie just put the phone down and walked away. O'Rourke is heard somewhat exasperated saying "great" and hangs up. Again, the theme is communication. The back story though is that O'Rourke for all his years with The Floyd wanted to get onto a Floyd album and just never happened. The last song on the last Floyd album (until recently) is The Floyd manager hanging up the phone after saying "Great". Damn! that is so Floyd.
Btw there's a continuity in almost every song of every album. And yes, story telling and sending you on journey's. That's Pink Floyd. You should do more.
Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour and he gave us both a signed album. We chatted for 22 minutes while he signed others albums. 35 lucky people won tickets. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. It was AWESOME..... Greatest show I've ever seen. and I've seen Pink Floyd four times..

Their music genre is Progressive Rock, and they are considered by many to be the GOAT in Progressive Rock History. I've been a huge PF fan since the release of their epic 1973 "Dark Side Of The Moon" album, I was 17 years old att, lol! I've seen them twice live, both times an experience I will never forget. If you plan on going down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole, you're in for a great ride!
I'd like to recommend to you to check out their 1994 Pulse Concert, a phenomenal, (of course), live performance. Songs like "Comfortably Numb", "Sorrow", "Money" and more including a live version of this song, "High Hopes".
Great synopsis of Floyd here. Completely concur that the” Pulse “ concert” and specifically High Hopes and Comfortably Numb are tremendous journeys. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, and the slide steel portion in High Hopes brings tears each time. Amazing, brilliant, just sublime.
You've "through a patreon", stumbled on to the Mozart of the 20th century in this group! From their album "Meddle" through the "Wall" their music and lyrics are second to none! You really need to pick something from their 1994 Pulse concert to see what they excel in and that's their live shows which are Beyond description!! A lot of their songs are more like musical pieces instead of just Quik songs with long introductions with giant crescendos that are worth waiting for!! Try the audio version of "Time" from their "Dark Side of the Moon" album or the live version of "Comfortably Numb" from their 1994 Pulse concert! I think that'll give you an understanding of why they've sold well over 250 million albums! 50 million worldwide for Dark Side of the Moon alone!
Additionally, nearly every Pink Floyd song will take you on a journey as you stated. None of their music consists of quick hopping up and down dance songs with almost all of them very thought-provoking lyrics along with great music!
Mr Gilmour has always been very particular about rhythm, and had a progressive approach to playing bass and drums, so unmissable. Every album has work that gets us to jump into a step, and most of the time that dance step is of an opera telling an epic or at least interesting reflections on a quiet San Tropez afternoon. Floydian values of dance are sophisticated and much higher. With a dancing couple tied up in the field, A collection of great dance songs does have some fairly "danceable" numbers in it, if one wants to take a bird's eye view.
[And hey, we can't really phrase it like "... to see what they excel in...". At least say, to see how they've brought imagination to life, "at least". "Excel" is for bands like zeppelin, purple, sabbath, halen, etc., who really excelled in the use of their instruments, (great stuntmen).

This is my all time favourite song from my heroes. I first heard this song the year the album came out as a 14 year old boy In the uk, when I was gifted the division bell album on cassette.
And even now as a 40 year old man, this album still has the same effect on me as it did the day I heard it!

When making "top XX greatest guitar solos of all times" videos or articles, people often forget (or don't know) that this song was written.
If anyone ever has had any kind of remorse, this song, this solo, becomes soul shattering.

Nice! I think the song is about youth in general. When you’re a child you the world is full of wonder and then you get older and it isn’t what you thought is was going to be. Definitely do more Floyd. Dark side of the moon!!!
The best part is that they somehow take you on many journeys.
I've grown up from about 12 listening to them, and in the decades since their music has always been amazing to me.
But the story has grown up too, as my life experiences have helped me understand what they are saying better.
There are not many bands that can do this. That can bring this evolving sense of emotions, understanding and connection even decades later.

Since the album (Dark Side of the Moon), each of Pink Floyd's albums has revolved around a central theme of its own, a subject that unites each of the songs.
Dark Side of the Moon - What drives people crazy.
Wish You Were Here - Absence.
Animals - Humans who abuse and take advantage of their fellow human beings.
The Wall - The pain of self-isolation as a protective measure.
The Final Cut - A requiem for the postwar dream which seems unattainable.
The Division Bell - Communication, or rather, the lack of communication.
So (High Hopes), seems to describe the hope of a return to the time when we still knew how to communicate effectively.
To see and hear this live - it was MORE than an experience!
I've always seen this song as a look back into one's childhood with nostalgic glasses. The sound of flies in the warm summer, where everything was just better, and all the stuff you wanted to do as a child, but never got to. You still dream yourself back to that time, when you're an adult. Like "Time" this one hits really hard, when you get older.
Long Road is a major thoroughfare on the south side of Cambridge and links Trumpington Rd with Hills Rd. About halfway between Trumpington Rd and Hills Rd there are 2 bridges: one goes over the railway line, while another goes over a field. According to Iain ‘Emo’ Moore the Cut was near the railway bridge.
But Mark Warden & Alfredo Marziano in the book ‘A Pink Floyd fan’s illustrated guide to Cambridge (2007) find it more likely that The Cut was under the second bridge on Long Rd, a couple of hundreds yards to the west of the railway line.
In order to reach the Cut you can climb down the steep slope from Long Rd. You can also enter the field at road level from an entrance a few hundred yards to the west, along Long Road.

This song takes me back to childhood, the sounds of the English countryside with bees and church bells ringing out on Sundays, hot summers and endless possibility.
I guess that's the point of the song.
As a side note about 20 years ago I suffered from a deep depression due to my life situation at the time, I was numb inside (Comfortably numb) for months.
I didn't care, I didn't feel, I didn't care that I didn't feel.
I was driving home dead inside one afternoon listening to this album and this song, Gilmour's solo rang out in the car and before I knew it I started to cry and realised I could feel for the first time in quite a long time... then I cried because I was crying and that felt good.
Never been like that since but always remember that feeling of release and something finally let go.

COMFORTABLY NUMB is another great Pink Floyd song. Try to watch both videos: the original studio version from The Wall album, and the live version from the Pulse Concert (1994).
Good choice of song sir, this is my favourite from that album.
This is actually the final song on Pink Floyd's last proper album. And they were still huge at the time.
I think their looking back is more to do with feeling more friendship and life and excitement in the past.
That they feel like they've passed the prime of their lives more so than their careers.
This isn't their most popular songs but you like to find meaning in lyrics. I'd recommend The Gunners Dream: Pink Floyd.

This song is personal. The lyrics are from a personal perspective, of yearning of the better days behind, from childhood, not related with the band itself.
At this point they were still touring intensively to sold out arenas across the world.
They would still be playing for full arenas today if they were still touring.

Pink Floyd are always an experience, philosophical, musical, psychological, visual (I highly recommend watching the whole "PULSE" concert, it will be unforgettable) both in their instrumental pieces (often experimental, psychedelic, difficult) and in the songs.
Each piece tells a story linked to the next and the previous one.
They were mostly musicians, more than a traditional band. And you can tell from the fact that they never care how long the song was or how "cryptic" the message it contained. They were interested in putting to music what they felt inside and that's it.
"Echoes", absolutely brilliant, my favorite of all PF songs, 23 minutes of soft, hard, funky, psychedelic, dreamlike, dramatic rock. I recommend the 1972 version "Live at Pompeii" and the last "Echoes Live in Gdansk" (the last time Gilmour and Wright played together, Wright died shortly after and Gilmour never played the piece again because that was a dialogue between them two).
And this is what makes them timeless, the greatest of all, even 50 years after the birth of their most famous songs.
The genius of floyd is that they give you half a story and you implant your own life into the song.

For me, it is about nostalgia, but that they are singing with a sense of being jaded and disillusioned with everything.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned here, but this song is heavily dedicated to their found member Syd Barett, you can clearly see it if you watch the videoclip :) best band ever

This song is absolutely about nostalgia.
In the official music video, they put a giant bust of original frontman Syd Barrett front and centre for a few shots, and the last two lines 'The endless river / Forever and ever' reference Pink Floyd's very first single 'See Emily Play' from the sixties, which featured the line 'Float on a river / Forever and ever'...
But this will ALWAYS be my favourite Floyd song, and for me easily the most emotional. I've got childhood memories of my dad playing this from his stereo whilst working on his PC as I was going to sleep in bed, and to this date my mind always goes back to him when listening to this song. He's no longer with me but I thought next week, I'm getting a tattoo for my birthday and it's about time I had one for him. So I'm getting the famous monolith faces from The Division Bell artwork on my arm.

So much nostalgia, when I was just a little boy my father got me into Pink Floyd and is still some of the music we love to share together.
I want to recommend some of my dad's favorite Pink Floyd songs: "Money", "Comfortably Numb" and "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2".

Music and writing of Pink Floyd are all masterpiece. The meanings in their songs are deep and complex and are represented by an universal and extremely human way. With the different style of the three period (Sid barret’s age (Es age), water’s age (super ego age), gilmour’s (Ego age).

Make me think back to my old neighborhood. You had 3 or 4 really close friends and slowly they all go different ways. You try to remember the last time you were all together but for what ever reason I can’t and it haunts me, longing for those days.

You can see it in many forms, for many people this song also talks about getting older remembering childhood and the people that are now gone and how focus in our work to have money not always is the right thing.
This was and for me Pink Floyd's final song looking back retrospectively on their career/life. When Richard Wright died they made a final... final album in his honour of music he made from this album that wasn't included in the original. It's good but something is missing.
This for a long time though was pink Floyd's final song and it is almost perfect as the final song of a band. It's a retrospective look back at their past. Absolutely beautiful

You’re 1st step into the world of Pink Floyd
A lot of people have said some great things below. It is a common theme for Pink Floyd to think about the way time passes in ways that are not only unexpected but also common (like thinking the past was always better in ways that are both delusional and true). The song "Time" from The Dark Side of the Moon is another one of their takes on this theme. This song is more English than we Americans usually understand (I still have to look up references to understand it), but the overall idea is accessible to anyone, as you recognized.
In any case, I hope you travel down the Pink Floyd rabbit-hole. I'll leave others to make suggestions, except that I'll reiterate that "Time" is a brilliant song. (The only caveat is that many will say that The Dark Side of the Moon should be listened to in its entirety from beginning to end in a single sitting, and while I don't disagree, the live version of "Time" from either the 1994 Pulse concert or the 1988 The Delicate Sound of Thunder concert works as a stand-alone track.) Really appreciate your thoughtfulness too, and thank you for the effort you put into considering the whole thing!
This is the last cut on PF'S last album. Written by David Gilmour and his wife many interpret it as a look back at PF's career of nearly 30 years.

For me, this is looking back on childhood - no responsibilities, how 'ordinary' things seemed magical, dreaming of the future, as compared to being older and having responsibilities. The only things better than this song, is watching the music video and/or watching the live version from Pulse concert.
David Gilmour can play a single note and have it sound sublime and grandiose; this is his greatest skill!! As far as vocals... he does exactly what the song needs; nothing more nor less!! Overall? It's never been about how phenomenal he is... it's been ALL about how tastefully he uses his voice, guitar effects, string bending techniques, finesse and style!! Is he the greatest guitarist ever? No. He however takes you on a journey with him, the song and his guitar!! Pink Floyd & Gilmour are The G.O.A.T.

If you like Pink Floyd as much as it seems, sadly there is only ONE WAY you're going to see their music "live" in concert (2021+) other than an older dvd (or maybe Waters or Gilmour solo in concert; they're getting old my friend)... more importantly hearing the songs done exacting to the studio albums adding a very good example of the "live" light show... you may wanna check out the following group that's IMO far better than a tribute band!! Absolutely awesome review, particularly since you haven't really delved into PF before. Well, they split up with Roger Waters saying PF was over; but they went on and replaced with him with a great bass player, but he was the main writer of most songs. Waters sued to try and keep PF from using the name, but didnt work. They ended up doing a 4 song set 20 yrs later at Live8 in 2005. PF went on for years after that. Gilmour says the song isn't really about that, but it sure fits and you made it fit without trying lol. Try SORROW, llive pulse 94 concert epic guitar. At the same concert ONE OF THESE DAYS crazy bass and rock with flat pedal steel with a harder edge than the flat pedal used in this song, all instrumental prog rock. Pink Floyd was recording Dark Side of the Moon released in 1973 at Abbey Road Studio at the same time Beatles were recording Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, if that tells you anything. Alan Parson was the studio engineer. But you "have" to do TIME and SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND, somewhat their signature songs.
I hope that you continue your exploration of PF - a truly amazing band. While I think that you should definitely listen to PF albums in their entirety and in the order each song appears (Dark Side of the Moon" is a good place to start; you can go back to earlier albums or forward from there), you also should really give yourself a treat and watch some of the videos of the live "Pulse" tour, 1994. You'll get an idea of what an incredible experience their live shows are. "Sorrow", Comfortably Numb", "High Hopes"(again), "Run Like Hell" are mind-blowing. I promise, you will not be sorry.

nice reaction, This is one of Pink Floyds common themes, As said the division bell is parliament voting bell, the burning bridges are part of that too, there is the political element moving to industrialised complicated future. its the call that "the good old days" its themes in similar to Animals and the Wall, that hoping for better things becomes an Orwellian/ Brave new world sort of idea as the instruments get grittier and more powerful as the song goes on.
Pink Floyd are known for writing concept / themed albums so each of the tracks are part of a larger composition like a musical or opera, this was common with a number of successful groups and the meaning in the song can be seen through the lens of the overarching theme. It was common when artists had limited tracks and 2 sides so albums required arranging to suit this (for example The Wall by pink floyd has a winding down track where you have to turn over the tape/ or disk. As an interesting note I think the longest track pink floyd made Echoes which was 18 minutes long
