If you want to see Gilmore doing truly amazing acoustic guitar Wish You Were Here from the same concert. He vocalises to notes played on his guitar... that's how connected he is to it.
8:12 that is a steel guitar. If you want to hear one of the funkiest fun examples of it being used I recommend a reaction to Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Specifically the '02 Wetlands Version. Wetlands, no visuals but the best version: ua-cam.com/video/PaIJyQqLcBU/v-deo.htmlsi=TvcfbFexAgHO3ViG Live video from more recent but missing a step from the '02 version: ua-cam.com/video/B0LjnfnujeQ/v-deo.htmlsi=7iueoOygXbSS2Fe9
You're getting your bands in order... #1. Pink Floyd #2. Led Zeppelin #3a. The Eagles #3b. The Doors #4. All the other greats like Aerosmith, Van Halen, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, etc... 😊 The 60's and 70's produced the best music artists in the world!
The entire Pulse concert was/is a musical masterpiece. If you haven't already, check out "coming back to life" from this concert. It's another great one!
This version of the song made me cry one time. I had it up super loud and by the time the outro music was fading out, it just moved me to tears. Im 42 years old and when you get into your feels with a song thinking about your life, etc It can get you.
Pedal Steel guitar played to emotional perfection. This concert (like all Floyd shows) was performed with all the detail one comes to expect from them.
to answer your question, in addition to acoustic and electric guitar and the pedal steel guitar that you saw in this video, he also plays bass, keyboards, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, drums, and saxophone.
Modern radio music is generic trash without any emotion or vibe, creating feelings, whether nostalgic or happy. It's mostly negative and has no melody. It's rare to hear a good song nowadays from a non band.
The instrument he’s playing is a lap steel guitar. It is an instrument that is specifically designed to be played with a slide. They are much more common in country and blue grass, than in rock music, but when someone like David Gilmour is playing it, it can do anything. When I first heard this song back in the 90s, it made me think that Pink Floyd come full circle - and I’m sure that’s not unintentional: some of Pink Floyd, earliest songs, when Sid Barrett was their guitarist, were full of slide guitar, and here we are, listening to a David Gilmore, who has advanced in age, playing a song about looking back on his youth. I think it’s a very intentional nod of the head to Syd, and Pink Floyd only youth. Either way, it’s absolutely marvellous and I love it.
The instrument David plays in the last solo of "High Hopes" is a pedal steel guitar. He also uses it on "One of These Days" in the Pulse concert. Since you obviously enjoy David's solos you should try "Sorrow" from the same Pulse concert. Pink Floyd is just special! I enjoy your reactions! Thanks!
Possibly my favorite song by Floyd, and I love mostly all of what they've produced. I read somewhere this is his wife's favorite song of his. Not surprising. Profound lyrics. One of the best solo's ever.
Was there opening concert in Miami Fl ... What an experience! For the record ... This song is a history of the band and the break-up. The lyrics is full of song titles and imagery .... And the sorrow of the break-up ..
You should definitely listen to the studio version to get the full epicness of this song. To answer your question: Gilmour plays guitar, bass, keyboards, banjo, lap steel, mandolin, harmonica, drums, and saxophone. You should react to "What do you want from me?." The guitar work on it will blow your mind.
I've noticed many have mentioned the Division Bell , I haven't heard it , but I've often pondered , having not heard the Album , why Division Bell , an archaic tradition used in the house of Parliament , when a Division is to be voted on , when the Division Bell rang , you have 5 minutes to get to chambers to yote on said Division , so , is it a political album , pointing out our Antediluvian traits that clash with our modern world , you know , where people steal the milk out of your tea , curious , did they like how it sounded , nothing at all to do with the actual Division Bell , just wondered , has anyone else , as an aside ever thought interesting name , given it's origins
Love to see your reactions........ when you noticed he was playing an acoustic guitar I thought "Just wait...." - your head shaking in somewhat disbelief when David Gilmour went to the Pedal Steel confirms us that have loved Pink Floyd, and those that especially "get it", are so lucky to have seen them live, and love seeing appreciation for first time listeners
ALL of Pink Floyd's songs are masterpieces! Has anyone ever listened to Obscured by Clouds circa 1972?! Incredible!! And most people haven't even heard of it.
You are becoming enlightened to what I have lived my life loving!! Keep going ! There is so much more out there. 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s music will make you contemplate your life and how you live it!
Beautiful Pink Floyd song, yes, a true masterpiece. After my oldest son died in 2008, their music (which he was raised on) became very soothing to me. Waking in the middle of the night, panic & tears taking over ... I'd put on Floyd & relax. They are amazing.
At the risk of being repetitive, the Division Bell album is a must listen and you should get a copy of the Pulse concert DVD. Neither will disappoint you. You will love them both. 😃
David Gilmour is the best guitarist that has ever picked up the instrument. He can do more with one string than any other artist. That's a lap steel guitar he is playing. Check out great gig in the sky.
I agree completely with your sentiments. Just one nit-picky thing, that's a pedal steel guitar David is playing. A lap steel guitar looks like a regular guitar but is steel and is played in ones lap.
Polo! What an absolute treat to see your epic reaction to my fav PF track of all time. Many a mental voyage taken to it... Many a tear shed as well. Thanks so much!
I went to NYC last Saturday and saw David Gilmour in concert at Madison Square Garden. I cried like a baby when they played this one. It was an incredible experience ✌🏻💕
I love the heck out of this solo. One of Gilmore's greatest. Wish I could have seen them live for myself. I own Pulse on CD, VHS, and DVD. Such an amazing concert.
Seen this same tour of Pink Floyd Division Bell in Toronto Canada on July 1994.Best concert I have seen over my 60 years of living. Great Vocals,Sound, and Light Show and Effects were outstanding. Great to see other people appreciate the best music of my time.Pink Floyd will live forever in time.Brings me back 😊
Such a great song saw them live in Boston incredible. But one thing that has always blown me away is the back up singers tremendous. Growing up was in love with Rachel Fury! The back up singers always seem like they add a lot and even their hand gestures. Keeping the rhythm is incredible.
Wanna hear a great acoustic solo ? Try Wish You Were Here. He vocally harmonizes with his guitar note perfect. Same show. The studio version is awesome but it's awesome to see as well. I've seen Pink Floyd 4 times starting in 73. I was 13. My favorite band. 100 %... When people try to box them in as "Rock and Roll" I laugh. While bands like Yes, who I've seen a few times, and love, or Rush, who I never saw live, have very distinctive sounds, are generally tagged "Prog-Rock", I don't see Floyd fitting in there either. It's Pink Floyd and, in my opinion, they stand alone. Capt.Bob, SV ( Sailing Vessel ) 27th Chance, Tampa Fl , USA 🇺🇸
Man, you really summed it up. Floyd's sound actually has evolved here and there over time, one album is not... necessarily the same as the next, but even with the departure of Waters (despite him undeniably being key to the composition of previous albums, I say good riddance) the FEEL of Pink Floyd - or the feelings they evoke - manages to remain very much the same. I don't know honestly how The Division Bell is ranked by critics against the rest of PF's corpus, but I've always loved it and felt it was really a really solid follow-up by Gilmour.
I agree with you completely on everything you said. And I love this album so much. I know a lot of people say it’s not a “real” Floyd album because of Waters not being there, but screw it, it’s a FANTASTIC album. I can respect what he contributed to and meant for the band throughout its existence and also say it was time for him to go, and this album to me proves the rest were more than capable of holding the band together without him. I think it includes some of Gilmour’s most beautiful and moving music ever made.
I remember watching Live at Pompei back in high school freshman yr ,was 14yr , I had just discovered Pink Floyd . I was surprised it was filmed in the 70s ? Its was long long time ago 🤟 . Everything Pink Floyd does is an experience for your soul ✨️
Not to correct you, but to teach. Pink Floyd is the name of the band. Not an individual. The singer and lead guitar player of this song is David Gilmour. The name Pink Floyd is actually derived from two Black blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Both are men to whom the band admired. Enjoy the song. You have a good channel going here. Respect.
I've been a big fan of Pink Floyd from _"Saucerful of Secrets"_ (their second album). When _"The Division Bell"_ came out I listened to it once, and thought "Eh, not as strong as their earlier albums". I listened again, and thought "Just not the same punch". I listed again. And again And again. And finally I said to myself, "I've just played this album 10 times in a row, so there's got to *something* about this album which is really connecting with me!". I still play it fairly often. The instrument he played while sitting down is usually called a "console steel guitar" or a "pedal steel guitar". He also plays it on some other (much older) Pink Floyd songs.
Dave has said in past interviews that what drove these tours was Roger telling him he'd never pull it off... also I believe that's a modern version of a pedal steel guitar, used in country songs
Hey Polo, yeah man the music and the performance are pure magic, truly an experience! Glad to see you enjoying one of my favorite bands! Timeless music for the ages, never gets old! Thanks for the reaction!
Pink Floyd is not only ear and eye candy, but, emotional movement. The music tones, tempo, and use of chords can literally bring tears to your eyes or power to your spirit. As i was watching you and listening, i know the song and was watching your first time hearing... I mean, feeling it. Brit Floyd is a tribute band that is the worlds best, note for note, stage show, lasers, etc.. they are on tour in the states i believe soon. Check your area and get tickets in the middle up a little high (hopes)... thank you for the excellent reaction video. I'm not recommending any songs because all are good and we each have our favorites. Start at the beginning. Meddle.
Such a beautiful song. David Gilmour is one of those rare guitarists that you know it's him just by the sound and tone. Pink Floyd is easily my favorite band. Saw them on this tour in 94 at Soldier Field...it was incredible and unforgettable.
Good evening Polo! Pink Floyd is an amazingly talented band, I was fortunate enough to see them at Soldiers Field in Chicago. I’ll never forget that concert. SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND 💎 ❤
@@jeffreybayles1162 , Yes‼️ They we’re on the Animals tour, what a spectacular concert that was. I was with my brothers band, his drummers dad owned a bar in Chicago, we got lit before the concert, rode the city bus to Soldiers Field, I’m surprised they let us in😂. We took the South Shore train back to Indiana. GOOD TIMES FOR SURE‼️💎
@@jeffreybayles1162 , at that time I lived in Hammond, Indiana now in Libby, Montana. I still have a few family members in Northern Indiana but I’m not going back there.
Love this type of content. Keep going. Pink Floyd live is one of the rare few bands that is as great live or studio. Watching their shows are a treat as well. Masters. The Gals are the icing.
Wonderful reaction as always. Indeed I could probably provide 20-30 more tracks that would be "bangers". But, knowing the entire catalog quite well, they do have 5 or so songs that you probably wouldn't choose to listen to a second time. But, considering the wealth of phenomenal music they produced it's easy to admit. Seeing them live was a religious experience for sure. I will never forget that night! Have also seen Roger Waters four times, and it is, if you enjoy his writing, outstanding. The Floyd stuff he does live is not too far from the original. However, the unique and genuine feel that David, Richard and Nick create is undeniably theirs. Any track from "Wish You Were Here", "Animals" or "Dark Side of the Moon" will be great. But, honestly, Their creativity is off the charts. So take your pick from any era.
The Nightwish cover of this song is absolutely crazy good.... gotta check it out - live - with the backup singer..... one of the most emotional performances i have ever seen. You will not regret watching this video!
I was 20 when Division Bell came out, and I had been deep into Pink Floyd since I was 14. Next year, its 30 years since this came out, and ithis band has been the soundtrack for most of my life. This song makes me trsvel in time. To sweeter, slower, brighter days that I was lucky enough to live through. Love your reactions man. You keep your cool and composture but its clear as day that inside you are bursting with the maelstrom of emotions their music triggers. Keep it up.
These guys are masters of music, truly an art form. And David Gilmore deserves to be appreciated for the absolute GOD he is. This whole Division Bell album is great and one of my favorite PF albums ever. Saw this tour in '94 and I still call it my most favorite concert I've ever been to.
Someone onc asked my what my favorite David Gilmour solo was...I replied "All of them." This incredible track is the final song on their final full studio album. David's Pedal steel closing solo perfectly captures the melancholy of closing this chapter on their lives. It is also a final tribute to founding member Syd Barrett (RIP). If you watch the official video for "High Hopes", you will see the visual references throughout. If you'd like to see another Gilmour talent, check this video (which doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves from the reaction channel crowd) - "Keep Talking" (a tribute to physicist Steven Hawking): ua-cam.com/video/k1s2Z-T7h4w/v-deo.html
@@minners71 True - to a degree. "The Endless River" was primarily comprised of enhanced and remastered instrumental pieces written for "The Division Bell" sessions, but not included. Only one track (and the only one with lead vocals) was written specifically for it after Richard Wright's passing 6 years prior, and 20 years after the last tour. All that remained of PF were Gilmour and Mason.... The Division Bell" was the last true group studio effort.
I saw them on this tour back in 1994. Only time I ever saw them and it is still one of the best concerts I ever went to and I’ve been to a few hundred concerts
So glad you did this version before you did the studio version!! Only because people think David Gilmour is doing his guitar solo with a regular guitar. The instrument you see him playing is called a pedal steel guitar some call it a lap steel however for it to actually be a lap steel you have to play it in your lap! He plays the same instrument on the second half of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and also the song "One of These Days"! One of these days is played live during this same concert. Mr Gillmore is actually a talented musician which I say on purpose as an understatement!!
Great reaction as usual Polo!! The instrument David ended with ( on this video, in other performances such as The AOL Sessions David concluded with acoustic) was a pedal steel guitar , or also called a slide steel guitar. Used often in American Country songs.
The instrument you're asking about is called a lap steel, which is kind of a simpler version of the pedal steel. This was Pink Floyd's final track on the last album they made while in active service, and if you know Floyd history, you can catch many of their career details in the lyrics. One thing you might've missed in the video, due to your pause, was in the middle of the second verse, the line "sleepwalking back again," echoed on both the stage and on the video screen. It's an eerie moment, and another kind of atmospheric thing they do well.
If you've watched a Pulse performance, you've watched/heard the supreme exposition of the song. What the band wanted the song to sound like. Every Pulse performance is studio quality. It's why they produced the Pulse concert album from this specific concert.
Gilmore is playing a steel guitar in the solo. This whole album is awesome. But if you like his solos, you should hit up "Marooned" from this album. Great video. I love these guys too.
Having watched in person the Pink Floyd Pulse tour, I must say this is the second most favorite song. Comfortably Numb is my number one song from Pink, hands down.
Pink Floyd was a huge influence on countless bands... For sure, I can say some of them were: 1) Tool, 2) Radiohead, 3) Coldplay, 4) Porcupine Tree, 5) Primus, 6) Opeth, 7) The Gathering, 8) Dream Theater, 9) Anathema, 10) Devin Townsend... etc.
Dave Mustang from Megadeth once said and I quote "If someone could go up and get a big fat scoop of what heaven tastes like, that’s David Gilmour’s playing right there. I can’t put it any other way; it just feels so otherworldly. He can take one note and turn it into an experience. You’re not listening, you’re experiencing his solos. Pink Floyd were always different, for their tones, solos and note choices.”
Well known amongst my peers as a complete Floyd fan, if I am asked what my favorite song is, "whichever one is playing at the time" is my response. Love your take on things, especially the nuances you pick up on!
At 5:00 thought this guy thinks it's an acoustic guitar solo. 😃 I can't wait to see his face when the lapsteel kicks in, he's in for a treat. The melancholy in this makes me tear up every time I remember how simple and fascinating things were in childhood and how concrete our views become as adults and how really wonderful things have become invisible due to bored indifference. Being aware of this allows you to reconnect with that awestruck spirit.
Steel guitar is the instrument at the end and it's usually in country music: if you want to hear him do the greatest acoustic solo of all time; its their song Wish you Were Here

High Hopes was actually written by David Gilmour's wife, Polly Samson
This is the definition of "bittersweet" to us old folks... Esoecially those who were Pink Floyd fans in childhood.
I think childhood in this song. Like everything was better because you saw it for the first time.
It’s about looking back on youth.
To think that Pink Floyd was once upon a time... mainstream says it all about today's music.

I remember watching Live at Pompei back in high school freshman yr ,was 14yr , I had just discovered Pink Floyd . I was surprised it was filmed in the 70s ? Its was long long time ago 🤟 . Everything Pink Floyd does is an experience for your soul ✨️
Listened to this version hundreds of times and goosebumps evertime with that solo. What a band.
Wonderful song
PF is my all time favorite band. Its nice to watch others discover their awesomness. Check out the live version of Keep Talking.
Dave has said in past interviews that what drove these tours was Roger telling him he'd never pull it off... also I believe that's a modern version of a pedal steel guitar, used in country songs
One of the most underrated rock albums ever! Absolute Masterpiece!
Hey Polo, yeah man the music and the performance are pure magic, truly an experience! Glad to see you enjoying one of my favorite bands! Timeless music for the ages, never gets old! Thanks for the reaction!
David Gilmour says that guitar solo at the end is his favorite solo throughout their whole catalogue! High Hopes is my Pink Floyd song!
Meddle.
Slide guitar at end. Great sound. And Gilmour does make them scream and cry. I like that description.
Such a beautiful song. David Gilmour is one of those rare guitarists that you know it's him just by the sound and tone. Pink Floyd is easily my favorite band. Saw them on this tour in 94 at Soldier Field...it was incredible and unforgettable.
June 14th at the Hoosier Dome!
Good evening Polo! Pink Floyd is an amazingly talented band, I was fortunate enough to see them at Soldiers Field in Chicago. I’ll never forget that concert. SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND 💎 ❤
With the flying pig hologram
@@jeffreybayles1162 , Yes‼️ They we’re on the Animals tour, what a spectacular concert that was. I was with my brothers band, his drummers dad owned a bar in Chicago, we got lit before the concert, rode the city bus to Soldiers Field, I’m surprised they let us in😂. We took the South Shore train back to Indiana. GOOD TIMES FOR SURE‼️💎
@@pattyfreeburn3743 I was at that concert as well, lived in Homewood at the time and now in Merrillville
@@jeffreybayles1162 , at that time I lived in Hammond, Indiana now in Libby, Montana. I still have a few family members in Northern Indiana but I’m not going back there.
Polo: The instrument that David sat down to is a lap steel guitar. Absolutely fantastic for emotive slide work.
POLO REACTS Tool is what Pink Floyd is, exponentially!!!
The Endless River says hello.
This is my favourite Pink Floyd tune. Aclose second is, On the Turning Away, from the live video from 1989. It’s on UA-cam. Cheers from Canada😎🎸👍🇨🇦
I saw them on this tour back in 1994.
Only time I ever saw them and it is still one of the best concerts I ever went to and I’ve been to a few hundred concerts
Thanks for getting to this reaction so quickly! I knew you'd love it! Might be my favorite PF track ever.
My favorite melody ever. Love it
If you've watched a Pulse performance, you've watched/heard the supreme exposition of the song.
Just beautiful music. Evokes a natural high every single time. Next? Learning to fly, on the Turning Away
Having watched in person the Pink Floyd Pulse tour, I must say this is the second most favorite song. Comfortably Numb is my number one song from Pink, hands down.
Pink Floyd was a huge influence on countless bands... For sure, I can say some of them were:
1) Tool, 2) Radiohead, 3) Coldplay, 4) Porcupine Tree, 5) Primus, 6) Opeth, 7) The Gathering, 8) Dream Theater, 9) Anathema, 10) Devin Townsend... etc.
YOU GOTTA HEAR "Learning to Fly" 🙌 You will not be disappointed my friend. Pink Floyd is a journey.
You have to check out "one of these days" from the same concert. It'll blow your mind.
One of a very number of bands that can sound better live than the studio, and they’re brilliant in the studio! ❤
The grass was greener.. his voice my God..
Steel guitar is the instrument at the end and it's usually in country music: if you want to hear him do the greatest acoustic solo of all time; its their song Wish you Were Here
Pink Floyd is like music from another dimension...
That was beautiful ☮️
TOOL was inspired by Pink Floyd & Rush, among others.
