I read Epictetus daily; religiously; and one thing he's clear about is setting the reader free from any more psychological suffering that comes from our interpretation of events. He teaches radical acceptance at a level I've never experienced before and I have never been as emotionally regulated as I am now thanks to the guy. I also admire that he was a slave unlike Aurelius who was a king and he shows that Stoicism is for everyone. When I saw "Stop Whining" on the thumbnail I knew this video would be on his teachings without reading the title. Truly a great man.

As much as I admire Stoicism and the teachings of Epictetus, such radical acceptance of any event and/or circumstance seemingly beyond our control is incredibly passive. Resilience can be quite powerful but that certainly doesn't mean one needs to unnecessarily suffer any form of injustice and accept their fate without at least making an effort to improve or better their situation.

While I love the principle, I don't necessarily think living life 100% detached to everything is either healthy nor even possible. We all have pursuits, material things and people we care about, and when those are removed it is bound to cause some grievances. It seems sort of invalidating to claim that someone is "complaining" when they're trying to process the grief of loss. I think one ultimately needs a balance in life: grieving when it's appropriate and detachment when it's appropriate. Long-term, detaching from whatever is causing the suffering seems more appropriate, but I don't think one can do that until one has processed the situation.
