  • Despite the blackness of his worldview, Schopenhauer also comes with solutions to make life endurable on this terrible, desolate rock infested by continual suffering. In his work Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit (in English: Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life), he presents his ideas on how we can live our lives in such a way that we prevent misery as much as possible.
This video (The Surest Way out of Misery | Arthur Schopenhauer) explores his view on the wrong ways of living our lives and their consequences, but also on the surest path to a not so miserable and, God forbid, possibly even enjoyable existence.

Schopenhauer is the best philosopher to me. Having a jaw amputation and suffering for years taught me that happiness is the absence of pain not the presence of joy. When I found his work it was the ultimate confirmation.

It would all depend on your state of mind on any particular day at any particular moment, in any case, if you are lonely get at least a pet, preferably a pet that will wake you up (e.i. rooster) and be there when you get home, if you are ok with the freedom to do whatever you want then let it be.

I don't believe it is possible to chase after happiness. A person can chase after things that bring them pleasure but I believe happiness is the result a person gets from doing the right thing. Or what is right for that person. I use to think that pleasure was the same thing as happiness but it's not. Took me a lot of years to finally figure that out.

Gaining pleasure and avoiding pain are two sides of the same coin. This is NOT the truth. I am sure Schopenhauer did not teach this (it’s a misunderstanding of his teachings). Trying to avoid pain in prison is like avoiding what’s in front of us. A prison is full of pain, that is the reality of prison! Trying to avoid pain still makes you an ignorant pleasure seeker! Accept the painful nature of this world, don’t expect this world to satisfy you or make you happy. Instead understand the nature of this world- a prison cannot make you happy- nor can I avoid the pain in this world- it is to be expected. So expecting pain and the realities of prison, I give up my expectations and desires and attachments to the things of this world and become free. And in that freedom is leaving the prison- which is our salvation/happiness.

"In the eyes of the closed minded, excess is success. When people to choose to be very materialistic, it's because they're trying to fill a void which no amount of monetary possessions can fill." Arthur Schopenhauer's got legendary and hard hitting quotes. And one which resonated with me drastically is "Whoever violated trust once, loses it forever". Upon hearing that, my heart sank to immeasurable depths, initially. But then came the bittersweet enlightenment. It encouraged clearer thoughts about not trying chasing or even reach someone who doesn't want to be, especially by me. When it feels as though someone has an endless impassable firewall up against you, there is absolutely ZERO chance of anything positive coming from it.

There was/is alot of blind ambition in my family that I had taken after, resulting in constant discontentment, though reasonably productive as a trade-off. I wanted to break away from that (while keeping the productive part), and the philosophies of some German thinkers like Arthur and 'ol Freddie definitely assisted in this journey.

Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche are my favorite philosophers
Nietzsche: He (or she) who has a _why_ to live for, can bear almost any _how_ . As long as there is someone who waits lovingly for us, a project to be completed, places to be traveled, a person will not throw away their life, and they'll bear whatever _how_ it takes to keep going.

  • @theself5738
    @theself5738 2 роки тому +16

He is absolutely right. The Buddha taught the exact same thing. The first and second noble truths are: All life (in this world) is suffering which originates in desire/attachment. You can call Schopenhauer pessimistic or whatever but you just have to admit to yourself that he is speaking the truth just like all true spiritual teachings. This world is a prison/hell and anyone who denies it is delusional. The first step to get out of this hell is to admit that it is hell! We cannot fake it and pretend like hell is a heaven, we would be lying to ourselves.
Gaining pleasure and avoiding pain are two sides of the same coin. I am sure Schopenhauer did not teach us to just stop seeking pleasure and instead try to avoid pain as the author of this video says (it’s a misunderstanding of his teachings).

Such an excellent and beautiful video which I completely agree with. This is why I decided to go all in the Finance world to pursue financial freedom so that I can actually focus and keep doing the things that make me happy. Having a physical great shape and a good state of mind is priceless in today's world and I'll do almost anything to protect it and keep it that way.
It's just a shame that you have other people around you who are constantly trying to bring you down, or who have hidden agendas, or who try to control and manipulate you, or try to bait you, or make you angry etc. etc. Even though I suffer fools gladly, it gets annoying at times. Also, I can't stand other people's insecurities and expectations. I live up to my own standard and expectations and are mainly concerned with playing MY game, not anyone else's game.
And although I could really care less about materialistic objects, as I'm more concerned with my state of mind - I definitely would much rather be rich than poor at the end of the day. You have to do something, either way, it's no escaping it, so it's better to go all out on your potential, whatever it is.

I have a hard time apprehending boredom... I'm never bored. Time always feels scarce. I don't seek entertainment or company. I don't feel miserable or discouraged being alone, but often so among others.

Our BIRTH is already definitely considered a t r a u m a ! Many of us came to the world under terrible glaring hospital spotlights, immediately and impudently (by the doctor) "nicely" hung up on the legs, and directly beaten on the sensitive rear . . . .then possibly left to scream for hours - completely unattended - on the ward, Then the first fundamental and extremely threatening imoressions: The newborn is c o m p l e t e l y helpless, at the mercy of others. It can NOT stand, let alone w a l k. It lies tied up in a narrow crib. Lying there completely h e l p l e s s. And when it is hungry and does not immediately get something to eat. it just thinks that it must DIE. That is why it cries so often !
And this should be a "welcome" in LIFE ? Then it is not surprising that all the rest of the life goes along with quite a basic MIS-trust and a lot of severe skepticism. And many were also not really asked whether they wanted to be born into SUCH a world, in which they are immediately used as "slaves" (employees, even soldiers) only quite impudently. Where was THERE the paradise ? Possibly this is the reason for the Freudian T h a n a t o s (death instinct). One simply wants to go back into the "womb" after having studied the whole delusion of man. His quote is not in vain: "Only in the grave is rest in peace" . . . . and now I finally get to the point: This is exactly why our friend Dr. Schopenhauer recommended:
"Just build yourself a comfortable chamber in this BURNING HELL!" He must have known more. . . .
All the BEST for you all out there in this (philosophers) universe

@@jackbauer8460 so just make moves knowing that I am fully supported? Is that really what you do? Or sounds so simple but it's definitely a struggle. It's hard to feel fully supported when things go left and stay there for a while.
I know I know ... Writing this out makes me sound so pitiful ... I'm working on it

@@alicia_nicole You most certainly are NOT fully supported.
You stand up or you will fall down.
You may choose to lay down for a rest or to recover, as wisdom leads.
Last evening I watched geese flying South through the cold wet grey sky and I thought-Man, that looks like hard work and for a long time, days and days and weeks.
If one of them stops beating their wings for a minute they are going down.
It is kinda sad and kinda cruel and kinda beautiful, but certainly very real and true.

I just want to say only based on the title of the video : we can’t help but chase happiness, that’s what we only do - if you want to chase misery you only do it either because it makes you happy or because you gamble that it will make you happy in the future (close future or distant, even post-death for believers of afterworlds etc)

Alot of you truly never experienced true loneliness (the suicidal kind) when loneliness just becomes so unbearable you struggle to breath and just cry to yourself in bed. A study conducted by Harvard shows that loneliness reduces our lifespan more than obesity and smoking a pack of cigarettes a day! What's the worth of freedom if you have no one to share your good news to?! To have a deep conversation with, to celebrate a birthday, to watch your favorite movie with, going to a nice restaurant!?? To hell with all of you that think loneliness is freedom. I love people but people dont love me...and that is the worst feeling of all
