    I do think that Yin and Yang are far better descriptions than Masculine and Feminine. Because, even though assigning one or some function(s) to Masculinity or Femininity does not necessarily mean that it's lacking from the other type, it will still be unfair to assign such functions (to either masculinity or femininity) basing only on a person's understanding or calculations of the matter without any studies or experiments to support it.

      Why would the third and fourth function not be involved? In theory one would assume they all are invlolved, but the lower you go in the stack the lower their influence would be?

    I'm inclined to agree with you. As an intj, I couldn't wrap my mind around "feminine Te", other than that I'm not naturally assertive. Because we all know when Te shows up, it's not there to mess around 😅

      The concept of " Yin & Yang" is not on dualism like white or black instead, it's a energy spectrum on the scale. That's why so many people can not comprehend the whole concept.
      No such a thing like science or spirituality, but there is no dualism b/w but we know about what to think but doesn't understand how to think. I love your comment... still question mark on it:)))))))))

    Yes, good one Asura! I feel like this is way more representative of the functions! Clear cut masculine and feminine ("Hard and Soft" maybe?) functions seem weird, unless it is Te and Ni like you said.
    IF my functions could talk separately:
    My Te says this theory holds up and seems practical, and my Fi says it is now my preferred way of viewing the functions. My Ni is going crazy over how this can be implemented into the "plan" and Se is still confused as to why I'm still invested and interested in personality types!

    Greetings Asura.
    Thank you for such an insightful exploration of the functions. Your theory makes full sense, I belive it projects an understanding of how certain functions create a sense of duality and intricate projection of the personality as a whole. I belive you are tapping into the neurological aspect of the functions, this is more based on the energy core or fundamentals of the functions, giving an indepth insight of how we digest and project energy as conscious beings. The archetypes of the functions projected in most of the time is about energy processing and synchronicity, your insight is about energy harvesting and orionality of the function, in which case I belive it is two different dimensions completely. Please continue, I am interested for more.
    .
    Thank you

    Hello, Chris. 'Masculinity and Femininity'
    After your te-rrific content, I went down several rabbit holes as I often find I will do after I listen
    to one of your videos. Your videos offer me a UA-cam version of a classic university education and there are always homework assignments for me from your class. And please tell Billy to stop kicking the
    back of my chair. (teasing now)...
    Carl Jung has a quote on William Blake in his 1921 book 'Psychological Types' Chapter X
    and I have been thinking about it ever since the first time I read what he wrote. I have always found that Blake has a symbology in his poetry that interests me
    and synchronicity sometimes finds a way to offer answers to my questions.
    TIL from AsuraPsych.
    I couldn't quite connect the dots to something I read but if one considers Logos and Ethos
    as Masculine and Feminine (Dave and Shannon, lol)
    and or 'Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus' in the planetary energies
    then this rabbit hole lead me to remember a passage I keep rereading in Chapter Ten.
    and your video connected the dots from Si to Ni.
    how Fe Fi fo fun...thanks.
    Jung wrote...
    "Blake's intuition did not err when he described the two forms as the "prolific" and the "devouring"
    [1] As is [p. 415] shown by the general biological example, both forms are current and successful after their kind ; this is equally true of the typical attitudes.
    What the one brings about by a multiplicity of relations, the other gains by monopoly."
    Here is where you video connected 'the sacred and the profane' to the 'prolific and the devouring'
    for me.
    and because boomers gonna boom, si-gh...
    Prolific and Devouring...I worked with two Green Berets (Hoo ah!)
    who could quote poetry from William Blake, (they love ' Tyger, Tyger burning bright')
    and the very next minute, they were stealing and prolifically devouring my French Fries.
    and may I say I have enjoyed the Yin and Yang of your Hair.
    "Perceptual realms". 8:51 Keirsey's book 'Please Understand Me refers to people as either Concrete and Abstract in their language.
    Would you consider Concrete to be masculine and Abstract to be feminine if we follow the patterns?

    Hmm... interesting theory. I would like to see a part two to this theory like you mentioned at the end of this video. I never really considered the idea of yin and yang functions. I mostly just stayed with the vanilla MBTI stuff since alternate "branch" theories seemed too wonky, such as Objective Personality's theory on Masculinity/Femininity and just their approach to MBTI always felt off-putting to me. But I do enjoy this theory and I look forward to seeing more theories like this in the future. Not just by you, but by everyone in the MBTI community.

    I am convinced of this.
    For me, your theory is correct, and correspond well with MBTI (the table is perfect)
    Your order of function is the same than is the table : _ Ni, Si dom Line 1 _ Fi Ti Line 2 _ Ne Se dom Line 3 _ Fe Te dom Line 4
    And the same I classified them from the less visible/present to the most visible/present : Ni Si Fi Ti Ne Se Fe Te.
    It correspond well why the TJ are on the corners of the table, and the types maybe who have less friends, less chance to connect with others.
    Especially us INTJ and ENTJ who have Ni and Te top2 functions : FFF and MMM
    Having 2 very opposites functions directly next to each other at the top, can surprise people and make us weird I think.
    I hope one day, we will find/create a theory/analyse of the Energy and Balance (and maybe make it scientific who know?), by connecting all of theses :
    _Yin/Yang, Feminine/Masculine, etc...
    _MBTI, cognitives functions
    _ I Ching (Erik Thor did a video about relation between MBTI and I Ching - ua-cam.com/video/gpW1oJMMN40/v-deo.html)
    He find the 8 functions correspond well with the 8 elements or trigrams, and I find it make sense.
    _ others things about energy... black hole/white hole ?
    MBTI and I Ching look very similar, and seem have some corelations, like 2 different points of views / theories, which maybe could be mixed together one day.
    That could explain why I likes sword/sky Te and water/ice Ni.
    All the INTJ I met by the past liked swords, and some INTJ, ENT profil picture on youtube or discord are the sky.

    Great video! I love classifications like this. I've used the same sort of idea for a while to classify the functions (masculine/feminine like this) but then wihout the involvement of perception and judging classification (somehow I did not think of that - it does make sense!). Without the perception and judging involvement to me Te and Se seemed the most most masculine and Ni/Fi the most feminine. Somehow the idea that the most masculine things were paired with the most feminine seemed to give it some sense of consistant logical structure to me, because then masculinity and feminine sort of neutralize eachother. With 3 ways rather than 2 or 4 to classify them as masculine or feminine , some functions end up sharing their amount of masculinity while others do not. Based on that, I wonder if there would be a fourth way to classify them, which then would then distinguish them all and create a more beautiful logical structure. Of cause just because in some structural way that would make sense, it does not automatically mean it must work like that. However, I find that in systems like yin/yang, and typology it seems there is are usually somehow a consistancy in structure. For example, the top 2 functions are the opposite of the bottom 2, the main stack 4 functions are in some sense the opposite of the shadow..etc
    Has there ever been a 4th way to classify them that you wondered about?

    • @AsuraPsych
      @AsuraPsych  3 роки тому

      As Jung said, the most influential things come in 4s, the concept of the quaternity.
      Sadly, three is the limit I have been able to conceptually get to without making large conceptual/logical stretches which tear at the integrity of the model. I think what you'll find though is that either way, some types and function pairs will be even/unveven, no matter if you use 3 or 4. If there is a 4th, I think it won't differ in terms of how masculine/feminine each function is. So for example, Te will still be the most M while Ni the most F. The issue with the 2 limit is that as you said both Se and Te are the same level of MM, which I think a differentiation needs to be made between the two. With three, we can rank order all 8 functions with minimal ties. Though a fourth layer is possible.
      Thanks for watching!

      Air/Fire/Earth/Water energy. Each element possesses three different energy as well. We need to start with deep understanding of these energy and then much easier to see different kinds of masculine an feminine energy manifested into our personality. If so, we can see energy in color not in black and white:))))))

    • @deedoc6241
      @deedoc6241 3 роки тому +1

      A cognitive function pairing by itself isn’t balanced, but when you look at a type’s four valued functions together, it then becomes balanced.
      For example, ENTJ, Te = M/M/M; Ni = F/F/F; Se = M/M/F; Fi = F/F/M; therefore 6 M & 6 F. Same goes the other three gamma types who share those same functions.
      Delta types have Te & Fi as well, so 4 M and 2 F. Add Si = F/M/F & Ne = M/F/F; you still end up with 6 M & 6 F.
      Beta types have Se & Ni, so 4 F and 2 M. Add Fe = M/F/M & Ti = F/M/M; again you still end up with 6 M and 6 F.
      Finally the Alpha types have Fe/Ti/Si/Ne, and if you count them you still have 6 M and 6 F.

    • @PowerRedBullTypology
      @PowerRedBullTypology 3 роки тому +2

      @@deedoc6241 That's absolutely true. However, if the idea is that the first function is stronger than the second and the second stronger than the third (etc) then I think that there will be less balance if you for example combine different dual types together. For example, if you take a 2 dual types that have a judging function as a first function (ENTJ and ISFP) they will be more yang in total than if they have a perceiving function as a first function (let's say ISTJ and ENFP) if you take into consideration that hte first function counts as more than the second and so on. Te does not really neutralize Fi in terms of yin and yang and and Si does not neutralize Ne. Fi and Te together will still be yang and thus not balanced and Si and Ne will still be yin.
      I think it would be a more beautiful model if opposing parnters would fully cancel out eachother (neutralize) and create a tin/yang balance, just like concept of the other half. The other half of 55% is not 50%..becaue then there is 5% too much. 55% needs 45% to neutralize. The concept of yin and yang is always about the balance in the middle. (maybe I sort of am repeating what I have already said).

      SeNi > NeSi > NiSe >= SiNe (depends on if you have Se third or fourth)
      Te > Fe > Ti > Fi
      Although nowadays the societal defintion of masculinity is backwards in that Si is considered a very masculine function due to its stoicism.

    I think the terms "assertive" and "passive" better align with growth of a function. We can refer to the expression of the function in a person as either or and go from there
    I think that because a healthy individual can assert themselves when negative behaviors and people push them. Whereas an unhealthy individual is passive about it.

    I think your theory is pretty logical in a Ni way. It's a solid way to explain the Yin/Yang nature of functions. However, I would challenge the notion that extroverted functions are masculine and introverted functions feminine; I think the opposite. I think the subjective nature of introverted functions lead to them leading more stubborn in the midst of challenge. On the other hand, I think the extroverted nature of functions allows (and requires) the functions to get feedback and interact with the outside world and are more easily influenced by them. Extroverted functions may seem overpowering compared to an introverted function, but I believe this is an incorrect assessment based on judgements from the OUTSIDE. Take the fierceness an introverted function out and compare it its extroverted counterpart, and notice that it does not readily budge in the face of outside influences (even though it may APPEAR like it is passively taking it). I believe viewing the I/E nature of functions also align with traditional MBTI as taught by Myers/Briggs.

    Your system looks pretty independent from OP's feminine vs masculine format if you take into consideration the ancient Chinese origins of the yin&yang philosophy and the culture that surrounded ideas of masculinity & femininity in those circumstances as opposed to today's rhythm and the individual cultures that go with it. As one example, my opinion often tends to view introversion as potentially more masculine because it's more self-assured whereas extroversion is more others-reliant and collaborative - but that's a very different perspective from ancient Chinese culture which attributed pomp and universal esteem to the men, while the women took on a more attentive and subtle role. Your theory does explain the extreme differences that INTJs tend to manifest pretty well though, so that part is working! I'm not sure that the cognitive functions are inherently masculine or feminine, so I agree that yin& yang is probably a better application if a consistent understanding of their general nature is desired

    • @Ella-qg4bq
      @Ella-qg4bq 3 роки тому

      This might come from easily picking up general trends from personality theory because each personality theoretically has own strong traits. I'm not sure whether or not certain cognitive fx is correlated to feminine and masculine energy based on the traditional concepts either. It might be related to narcissistic/socio/psychopathic tendency. I also think that individual nature is more likely related to feminine and masculine energy. Sometimes it's super hard to say when I have to separate MBTI from Astrology. Why we need to chop up everything to the specific area then completely ignore the other side.
      MBTI helps me narrow down in order to look for certain quality in person then go into more specifically INTJ I've come across is so different even though they have similar tendency. Why Why? please look into Astrology to see some clue. At astrologic level, we can see energy level and so much more......on the whole pic.

      @@Ella-qg4bq yes, I think that multiple platforms of study can do at least as well if not better at gaining a well-rounded understanding of the self and others than simply narrowing down hard on one field; it can at least insure that the learner is prompted to do their own thinking. I guess the pickle that a lot of UA-camrs like OP run up on is the expectation that viewers may or may not have about fields of interest - and the whole masculine/feminine platform is positioned to accommodate narcs and the like all while attempting to explain how two people from the same type can be very different; in my opinion it's just perhaps a little too much frosting if the system is getting harder in an attempt to make things easy; my biggest road-block in that particular spot is that there are days when I feel like...all of my functions are masculine... As I give it more thought, OP’s Masculine/Feminine seems to be looking for differences in an Individual’s behavior (whether or not they seem more aggressive/pushy or passive/moveable) when using a specific function. Meanwhile, by breaking down each trait that a cognitive function can have and ascribing a yang or yin quality to each trait, your goal seems to be to better describe the cognitive functions themselves. The difference in goals is important to recognize. However, despite this difference, I personally like your understanding of Yang/Yin cognitive functions much more than Objective Personality’s Masculine/Feminine. With OP I was always kind of suspicious about their Masculine/Feminine idea, I think it might make it easier to mistype someone because, for example, their Ne could potentially be mistaken for feminine Se. At least that’s what I think, not saying for certain.

  • @user-be3hh5pp4i

    I recently started learning about OP after 2 years of studying MBTI. This theory about m/f in the functions makes much more sense to me. I’m an INFP and read the description of m/f of sensing and could identify with the feminine “snapshot” technique of it. Then thought, that means my Ne is masculine. 🤔 It doesn’t seem to have major masculine qualities yet can sometimes so MFF sounds right. My baby Te comes out swinging though! 😄 I haven’t reached this point yet but in OP would it mean my Fi is feminine with such immovable Te? If so, it seemed to not fit as well because my Fi can be tough with some things. So that FFM describes it better.
    Sorry if I just rambled off my life story! 😆

    I understand the concept of how ying/yang each function is, what's your opinion on the fact that introversion and percieving are more common in males? Istp's and intp's have the largest male to female gap at 3:1, a type dominanated by males is more feminine?

    • @AsuraPsych
      @AsuraPsych  3 роки тому

      Function wise IxTPs lead with Ti, the only masculine introverted function, FMM, with INTPs being slightly more feminine having Ne vs Se. This masculinity in the function expression could very well be leading to a large mistyping due to feminine individuals (usually female) more associating with typically feminine responses on tests, which tend to score them as feelers.

  • @PowerRedBullTypology
    @PowerRedBullTypology 3 роки тому +4

    I wonder how much of the yin yang classification is purely abstract and how much of it is related to our biology. In general I do think most people will perceive people with sensing and thinking as more masculine and people with intuition and feeling more feminine.
    However, when connecting it to "biological" feminity and masculinity, I wonder if things are as clear when it comes to extroversion and introversion. According to a graph about gender (sex) distribution of the types that are most likely to be n female are the 4 types with Fe as a first or second function rather than Fi or Ni. The types who most likely to be male are the Ti dominants rather than the Te dominants. The types with Fi and Te appear more towards the middle (they are distributed more evenly across male/female).
    Then there is another graph about sexual preference of types that displays that male esfj's and enfj's are most likely to be gay of all types. Then the istp male is of course again the least likely to be gay. So Fe and Ti more often seem to be the extremes in these things, whereas Fi and Te more seem to be located in between them

We tend to think that a dichtomy of such type (such type of archetypical concept like ying and yang which seems to be the sort of deepest concept we can think of) must be black and white, but maybe it's more of a dark grey vs a light grey (a mmf vs a ffm). Some sort of "golden middle" or maybe even "golden ratio" in every extreme I guess?

      I assume its because being ultra masculine with Se and Te isn't very beneficial in our society anymore. Also, Ni is starting to be considered "masculine" because of its future-oriented nature which can correlate with goals and goal achievement, all of which wouldn't have been beneficial or masculine in the hunting days. Last thing is, since ISFJ is arguably the most common feminine MBTI (INFJ isn't common), then some girls simply take the extroverted versions of these types because they're socialized together-- being an extrovert is easier in gaining status in a herd-like society.

    • @AsuraPsych
      @AsuraPsych  3 роки тому +14

      Correct! One of the reasons I critiqued OPs M/F system is they have ENTJ TeSe as their most masculine type and ISFP FiNi as their most feminine.
      There's a few different ways to think about this and in some ways they could be right. So for example, ENTJs have the most masculine outer world of all the types with both Te and Se, BUT this assumes that Ni isn't playing its part, its the auxiliary function for a reason. ESTJs have the more consistent supporting masculine auxiliary, Si, MMM FMF, 4M with a leading triple M.
      ISFP FiNi is another thats...close, but misses the mark. In my model perceiving is more feminine so it makes sense that the lead function should be the most feminine, Ni. Fe is the most feminine possible auxiliary to Ni, making INFJs a FFF MFM type, 4F with a leading triple F.
      INTJs actually have the most feminine inner world if you look at their two introverted functions, FFF and FFM, but this is balanced by Te being their outer world interface, MMM. In particular, this is why Gamma quadrant (SFPs and NTJs) is interesting in my mind. They have the most M outer pair (Te/Se) but the most F inner pair (Ni/Fi) leading to drastic switches in inner and outer presentation. I plan to do a video on this topic as well to further explain why this matters.
      Thanks for watching!

    What is the purpose of viewing cognitive functions this way, Asura? I can see how OP tries to use masculine/feminine to (perhaps dubiously) “explain” differences in presentation of cognitive functions, but since you’re saying it is fixed, it seems more like another lens for describing functions. I definitely relate to the “extreme shift” for Ni/Te... and have used the yin/yang symbolism before to reconcile it, relating to both the ‘’masculine” and “feminine” at the same time. I’m also looking forward to seeing you develop this little theory further and can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into it. I could try and pick it apart if you like. 😉

    • @AsuraPsych
      @AsuraPsych  3 роки тому +2

      The general idea in viewing it like this is to primarily show that I dont think it is a changeable factor and that what other systems may be attempting to show with masculinity/femininity in functions may actually be negative or less developed forms of functions. I think that the functions have inherent M/F natures and that for example if an Ni/Si dom is acting uncharacteristicly masculine/aggressive, there may be a developmental or cognitive processing struggle. The goal is to shift the lens towards what is a healthy representation of a function instead of showing variations with potentially unhealthy components as a ideal.
      Another working theory and large factor is how these inherent natures could collide with cultural and gender norm expectations, as well as sexuality even. For example, a lot of people who fall into different gender expressions may be of a type that goes against their cultures normal expression for their gender. Say for example INFPs (Fi FFM with Ne MFF - primarily Feminine on both sides) tend to be one of the most common types associated with gender expression and identity struggles, especially in males. May be some tendency towards feminine expression in these types that might manifest through identity struggles if not allowed to naturally express.
      I think this theory has a lot of applications, but I will admit it is still in its early stages. Thanks for watching!

    I like the idea (def feel better approach then Objective Personality) , but I disagree with the dichotomies. Extraverted functions are shaped by the external world, thus making them fluid like water. Introverted functions push against the tide. Ni and Si both bring order out of chaos, while Ne and Se go with the chaos. I don't think judging functions have anything to do with order, just thinking types. Emotions don't have structure, they flow.
    So:
    Ni, Si, and Ti are M-M.
    Te and Fi are M-F
    Ne, Se, and Fe are F-F
    Giving points per location in stack, positive for masculine and negative for feminine, we have a very different order for a yin/yang approach then for traditional male/female stereotypes. ISFJs, for instance, are known for creating order despite being 20% of the female population. So they score relatively high. ENTJs, despite being seen by culture as more masculine, are often quite good at adapting to chaos (Se child) to create order (Ni parent). Thus they fit quite well near the middle, accessing both sides. Likewise, INFPs, while stereotypically female, need physical stability (Si child) before they can engage with abstract chaos (Ne parent). Here's my list:
    INTJ: 3
    ISTJ: 3
    ISTP: 2
    INTP: 2
    ISFJ: 2

    • @AsuraPsych
      @AsuraPsych  3 роки тому +2

      I think in those cases it comes down to the function that supports it. Is Se more masculine inherently than Fe? Or are they roughly the same and the supporting function influences the personality more?
      ESTP vs ENFJ is a good example but its Se (MMF) Ti (FMM) vs Fe (MFM) Ni (FFF) - ESTP is more M in the top two. ENFJ is one of the 4F types, mostly feminine and ESTP is one of the 4M, mostly masculine.
      Compare an ENFJ though to an ESFP, Se (MMF) Fi (FFM) - The ESFP is closer but still more masculine due to the nature of the auxiliary. An ESFJ though, Fe (MFM) Si (FMF) is tied with ESFP.
      Some function pairs, like FeNi, will be mostly F while some like SeTi will be mostly M.
      For these reasons I don't think Se is more masculine than Fe, I just think the functions it pairs with have a higher threshold for masculinity while Fes pairs have a higher threshold for femininity.
      I do see what you mean though and it let me think of things in a new way. Thanks for watching!

      @@universologist1941 Kind of. All of the perceiving pairs are 4F 2M while all of the judging pairs are 4M 2F. The difference is that Some of the pairs are more balanced. Si/Ne are more balanced than Se/Ni. Just as Ti/Fe are more balanced than Te/Fi.
      I mentioned this in the response to another comment and I am planning to do a video on this soon, the next part of the theory. ENTJs have the most M outer world with both Te and Se, but Ni plays a significant role in Te mediation and therefor the average ENTJ will have a Te that is "on the Ni leash" so to say wheras ESTJs have Si supporting Te, which is slightly more masculine. This leads to that "leash" having more pulling room before on locks.
      Another important aspect is that since ENTJs have the most M outer world, they have the most F inner world with both Ni and Fi. This leads to another balancing in the psyche.

      @@AsuraPsych I do agree that Judging functions are Yang. Perceiving functions are Yin.
      Extroversion is Yang. Introversion is Yin.
      But about sensing and intuitive functions. I am not entirely sure.
      I guess if we define Yang as more concrete, Yin as more abstract, we could make a case for that. But as an INTJ, I feel Ni and Ne are also about possibilities and future focused. When it is alone, yes. I do agree it is less Yang than Si or Se. But functions are on an axis, so when we have Ni-Se. For example, Ni stops being static. Se will extrovert Ni’s abstraction. In my case, as an Ni dom. It’s ambition or extreme willpower.
      Take the ISTJ and INTJ for example. Si Te Fi Ne vs Ni Te Fi Se.
      If just based on an objective and general impression, I could very much be wrong about this tho. I never really experimented on this theory. It’s just patterns I observed with Ni.
      I believe the INTJ is overall more Yang than the ISTJ. Because Ni-Se axis brings out Ni’s ambition and ideas. Then Te executes it.
      ISTJ’s Si-Ne axis will be primarily past focused. Less likely to extrovert that much with Ne. Then Te executes through Si_Ne filter. Si is more about endurance. Si-Ne in the ISTJ is not driven like the Ni-Se in the INTJ.
      Take the INFJ and ISFJ for example, again, my impression can very likely be wrong. But I think the INFJ is more Yang than the ISFJ for the same reason. Ni-Se axis is filled with willpower and desire and future focused. The Ni user will want to make Ni ideas come true. So Ni alone seems very Yin. But Ni-Se seems more Yang than Si-Ne.
      We have had some very Yang INFJs in history. Like Jesus. Or Hitler. (A bad example I know)
      Haven’t seen many ISFJs being influential tho
      I have no scientific evidence tho. This is just a theory.

      None of that has any correlation to Christianity. All of those are a combination of modernism and gnosticism.
      "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." -Galatians 3:28 USCCB Bible.
      In addition, if you want a basic run down of the sexes, let me demonstrate, in a way which favors neither through sexism:
      The basic masculine need is separation (and eventual reunion) since males, even effeminate males, always feel a need to distinguish themselves from their mothers as well as everyone else.
      The core feminine desire, by contrast, is communion (or course, not to be confused with the Sacrament of Communion which Jesus instituted in the Last Supper) because they know they're the same as their moms.
      Males and females are equally capable of pride and jealousy. You're partially right when you mention the fathers and mothers as well as the head and heart, but the latters' connection with the sexes need a direct connection: in the holy structure of the family, fathers represent the brains and mothers represent the heart.
