So great to see a flicker of 2018/19 FJ coming through. Nice to see a more chilled video without the epic green screens, dress-ups and editing. I like chill FJ 😊
Once you get into cognitive functions and somewhat understand it, you can’t get out of mbti, seriously, it’s so interesting even though it’s repetitive.
This is kind of my fear, tbh. I remember back in February when I first started learning about this. We went for a walk and saw a family with small children. One child was walking way ahead of them. My first thought was, “Hmm, I wonder what personality would be the type to walk ahead…or trail behind…the rest of a group?🤔” Then I immediately shut down the thought because I didn’t want to be someone who was constantly analysing people in casual settings. I haven’t gotten too deeply entrenched in MBTI since then because of this, even though I think it’s so interesting.
@@Carol_65 it’s a thing for sure! I’m an ENFP, if that helps in any way, but: I find myself trying to type my cat’s personality, celebs or actual characters in stories, my colleagues, boss, etc. it’s more an experiment for myself if I think I’ve figured them out correctly and use that to influence how I interact with them (not celebs and characters though, but people/beings in my actual life), and then if they seem to positively respond to my interaction with them, it gives me more evidence that I may be onto something with my MBTI hypothesis for them. It’s both just fun to type but also somewhat helps in my communication with others.
I almost forgot that Frank is in fact an incredibly smart guy and not just a comedian who writes skits. He's a great teacher. Edit: I've seen a lot of replies saying that comedians are smart. That is definitely true. What I meant is an intellectual; there are many types of intelligence. Have a lovely day :D
Some more help for newbies; Here is the core question each function asks (IMHO): Se - What is happening right now in this situation? Si - What happened before in similar situations and does it apply here? Ne - What new ideas can I derive from the data? Ni - How can I link all the data together into a unified system of ideas? Te - What makes logical sense for the group in terms of efficiency and getting things done? Ti - What makes logical sense in my own mind regardless of others' opinions? Fe - What do others in my group value and how do I find harmony with them? Fi - What do I value personally and how do I act with authenticity? Also, anyone who wants to go further down the rabbit hole might want to look into shadow functions, which is basically the mirror opposite of your function stack and can emerge during periods of high stress. (For example, an INFJ's shadow stack is Ne-Fi-Te-Si.)
I'm INTJ Ni Te Fi Se (I'll change the order to explain) Ni Se Te Fi What is the meaning of past ideas Ni For what is happening now Se And apply technically to all of us as a group Te But don't across the line of what I THINK it's the RIGHT? Fi
Honestly I couldnt be happier that Frank decided to talk about cognitive functions since his channel is a lot of peoples intro to MBTI this is the absolute best way to spread the info and clear misconceptions! Loved it!
I have a feeling that Frank is trying to gather the entire mbti community using skit videos. I assume this is his opportunity to make people get deeper on MBTI
Yep, that was my reaction when I saw this video hahah :D ! I feel like lots of people since they're more used to the little sketches etc. aren't really familiar with cognitive functions, so they're typing themselves either by stereotypes / the 16 personnalities test directly, which is.. Ehhhhh because of the typing by letters that is an extremely simplied version of the cognitive functions, plus the intuitive bias that 16 personnalities have :). Anyway, I'm glad that Frank can educate more people on them :D
i think dear Kristin made a shorts video that went like this How we want people to talk about mbti: *talks about cognitive functions and talks about it properly* How people talk about mbti: “I’m an ENTJ and you’re an ENTP, so I’m the more organized version of you!” It was so realistic it was frightening 😂
Talking about the cognitive functions and how that applies to someone personally as well as how far they are in the direction towards a part of a personality like how S or T someone is will give answers that are more exact to how the person actually behaves while the simple idea that an ENTJ has J and ENTP doesn't so ENTJ must be more organized I find it funny how no one cares about how the type actually works and how it can vary before using it
Determining your mbti based on cognitive functions is wayy better than the I/E N/S F/T P/J stuff. I'm able to understand people's mbti so much faster by using those functions. It really great
the F vs T functions are the judging functions. you make decisions with them. your F vs T are always the opposite of each other. Fi - personal values (priortizing your own likes, taste, morals, hobbies, etc. "following your heart") Te - tribe reasoning (prioritizing other people's advice that's backed up with their logic, facts, data. trusting the consensus. wants people to work together effectively) Ti - personal reasoning (prioritizing what makes sense to you with your own findings, skeptical of outside reasoning and often asking questions) Fe - tribe values (prioritizing what other people like and value. trusts common ethics. seeks harmony) -------------- N vs S are percieving functions. they're about how you process your surroundings which you then go on to use to make decisions. N and S also gotta be opposites. Ne - gathering the abstract (consuming ideas, patterns, and possibilities in a scattered frenzied way. and it spits out these things chaotically) Si - organizing the concrete (taking the time to break down information and past experiences in a linear fashion. uses familiarity to try to control the environment) Se - gathering the concrete (consuming facts and surroundings, truly going with the sensory flow living in the moment. in a frenzied chaotic way as well) Ni - organizing the abstract (taking the time to process the patterns and zeroe in on few ideas to reach a point in a linear way. breaks down concepts. uses predictability to try to take control) ---------------------------------‐-------------------------- regarding the xxxP and xxxJ stuff. an easier way to memorize function stacks based off of those letters is this: P types prefer introverted judging (Fi/Ti) and extroverted percieving (Ne/Se) J types prefer extroverted judging (Fe/Te) and introverted percieving (Ni/Si) Ni/Si are about control and Ne/Se are about chaos, that's the typical J vs P. although this mostly applies to IxxJs vs ExxPs. IxxPs and ExxJs are way more chill when it comes to that balance enough about letters. your inner and outer cognitive functions are your dominant and your inferior, and they're opposites. their imbalance is basically your life struggle. like doing Ne all the time without effort, but you hate Si-ing. yet the less you do your inferior function, the worse you as a person function and the more unhealthy you get your middle functions are also opposite but work together a lot better. like using your reasoning (Ti) to make comfort people (Fe) is a common thing i see. if your first function is introverted, your second needs to be extroverted. if you have Ne first you cant have Te second. it can only be 3rd.
I would say Si is more related to personal tastes than Fi - This is just one mistake out of the huge number of mistakes in MBTI. Just read what Jung wrote about Si and you will quickly find that the MBTI completely misunderstood the functions.
About the stack: The first letter tells you if your dominant function is Extroverted (e) or Introverted (i) The fourth letter tells you what's your Extroverted function, either Judging (J) or Perceiving (P) For example, INFJ: The first function is introverted, and the extroverted function is Feeling (because of the J), so it has Fe somewhere So its stack must be Ni (first is introverted, can't be Fe) Fe (Preferred judging function) Ti (Opposite from Fe) Se (Opposite from Ni) You can really type yourself accurately with this info. For example, I'm an INFJ, and even I'm not sure if I prefer Ni or Fe for my dominant function, I'm sure my inferior function is Se because I struggle so much with the sensible world, but not that much with making rational decisions (Ti) Anyway, the rest of the stacks: INTJ: Ni Te Fi Se ENFJ: Fe Ni Se Ti ENTJ: Te Ni Se Fi INFP: Fi Ne Si Te ENFP: Ne Fi Te Si INTP: Ti Ne Si Fe ENTP: Ne Ti Fe Si ISFJ: Si Fe Ti Ne ISTJ: Si Te Fi Ne ESFJ: Fe Si Ne Ti ESTJ: Te Si Ne Fi ISFP: Fi Se Ni Te ISTP: Ti Se Ni Fe ESFP: Se Fi Te Ni ESTP: Se Ti Fe Ni
How to sum up the cognitive functions: Ni - unconscious information process, one definite answer Ne - one single piece of information, multiple answers Fe - value of other people Fi - value of yourself Te - External logical efficiency Ti - Internal logical stratosphere Se - External Environment Si - Internal Environment
@@scarasbf there's no type with these cognitive functions stack, one is extroverted and the other is introverted, like it can be Ne Fi Te Si wich is ENFP, or maybe Ne Ti Fe Si wich is ENTP (English is not my first language, hope it's understandable)
THIS IS THE MOSY IMPORTANT FJ VIDEO YOU’LL WATCH IMO. honestly in my head the four letters are more of an abbreviation at this point and the cognitive functions are the actual substance of the types. once you understand functions it’s like a whole other world opens up in mbti
19:51 you just have to remember this: for IXXJ and EXXP types the dominant function is a perceiving one, for IXXP and EXXJ ones it’s a judging function.
Just a disclaimer, your 3rd (tertiary) function isn't always "not preferred". Some people are jumpers/in loops, meaning they run with their 1st and 3rd function, rather than their 1st and 2nd. For example, an ESFP could be SeTe rather than SeFi
It's rare for people to have extraverted perceiving and extraverted judging function as dominant and auxiliary function. That doesn't mean people aren't more likely to exhibit their two extraverted functions to others.
Ok, I'll summarize this in the simplest manner possible. Ti = Likes to make their own thinking, likes to ask questions, highly logical, detail focused, likes to connect small details in order to reach to a final conclusion. Te= Open to the ideas of others if backed up by good arguments, productive, willed to trade details for time savings. Highly driven by facts and common sense, likes helping others, prefers to be concrete and upfront. Fi= inward focused, driven by values, highly empathetic in weird ways, doesn't like opening up unless it's with a highly trusted individual, individualistic, are good at spotting bad people. Fe= outward focused, likes helping people a lot, likes showing emotion, usually sociable, very supportive. Ni= Future focused, abstract, very deep, high pattern recognition skills, doesn't enjoy working with too many ideas all at once, gets overwhelmed if they need to make too many fast decisions Ne= Very imaginative, good at seeing possibilities, spontaneous, likes to juggle between multiple ideas or concepts, enjoy exploration. Si= Very organized, down to earth, conservative in their thinking, enjoys facts and common sense, very balanced, doesn't like too many changes, especially if they seem weird to them, past focused. Se= Present focused, spontaneous, very good at making fast decisions, enjoys being active in the sensory world, energetic, doesn't like delaying gratification. Perceiving functions (XXXP) = Intuition, sensing Judging functions (XXXJ) = Thinking, feeling The first function can be determined by the first and last letter of a personality, if the personality has an "E" as their first letter then their first function will be extroverted, if the first letter is "I" then the first function will be introverted. If an extrovert has a "J" as their last letter then their first function will be a judging function (Thinking/feeling). If an extrovert has a "P" as their last letter then their first function will be a perceiving one (Intuition/sensing). Keep in mind that for introverts is the other way around. J= Intuition/sensing P= Thinking/feeling. The first function of a personality will always have it's opposite as the last function. Ni will have Se Te will have Fi Fe will have Ti An ENTJ will have extroverted thinking as their first function because they are an extrovert, they have J as their last letter and they are a thinker. Their last function will be introverted feeling since that's the opposite of their first function. The second function can be determined by looking at the first function. If the first function is a judging function then second one will be a perceiving one and vice versa. If the first function is introverted then the second one is extroverted and vice versa. The third function will always be the opposite of the second function. ENTJ has an extroverted judging function (EXXJ) as their first function which means that the second one will be an introverted perceiving one. ENTJ is an intuitive which means that the second function will be introverted intuition. The third function is always the opposite of the second one which means that an ENTJ will have extroverted sensing as their third function. In conclusion, an ENTJ has extroverted thinking as ther first function (they're extroverted and also a judging type) The last function is introverted feeling because that's the opposite of the first. The second function is introverted intuition (the first function is an extroverted judging one so the second function is an introverted perceiving one. They are also an intuitive since they have "N"). The third function is always the opposite of the second function, that means that the third function is extroverted sensing. If you have any questions then feel free! I spent a whole hour writing this, I hope it turns out to be worth it.
@@end4567 😦 seee...this is why I'm lost. That's a hella lot of summary. Maybe if I read it 15 times..and the whole time I'll be asking myself "what if it's not even real??" 🥴
@@dipsydoodle7988 Uff, there's really no easy way to explain it. It's a lot of details but it isn't too hard to understand. If you don't really care about learning everything and you use mbti to self develop then you can read about the functions of your own personality and stop there. If you're an ISTP then your functions are these: 1. Introverted thinking 2. Extroverted sensing 3. Introverted intuition 4. Extroverted feeling If you're an ISTJ then 1. Introverted sensing 2. Extroverted thinking 3. Introverted feeling 4. Extroverted intuition
To a chemist, the cognitive functions are nickel, neon, [throws table into the mesosphere out of frustration], iron, titanium, tellurium, silicon, and selenium.
I don’t think he will act as a particular ‘doctor/professor/scientiest’ today just because he is only going to explain the cognitive functions. He worked so hard on this video though.
@@Nobinobli but still, you have to ready a script and recheck it to remove any errors or any misinformation. if youre gonna teach something, you gotta see if you know it from every angle or not, and thats the difference between a speaker/teacher and a listener/student
I'd say an isfp, infp, and enfp are the types who struggle the most in this society. They are the ones who really have to suffer consequences for something that should be commended and nurtured... to all of you who are just now learning the functions, or if your an fi user, my words will ring true eventually if not now.
If you're confident of yourself and can be realistic, having an Fi does not pose that much problem. Indeed, it feels saddening that it's hard to feel that people doesnt understand us, but you have to learn to control that feeling. Speaking from an INFP here.
Frank, thank you so much for this. I know several people have commented about wanting this video, and I am so glad you did it. IMO, it’s one of the most important MBTI videos you’ve made. TBH, it’s still confusing to me. I even slowed down the video to listen more carefully. For some reason, it’s like you’re speaking “math” to me.☺️ Once that happens, I have to fight to concentrate. The same thing happened while reading some sections of “Gifts Differing”. I find myself re-reading the same paragraph repeatedly without it sinking in. However, your adding a white board to your video has helped tremendously. I now plan on getting a poster board and creating a diagram of all of this with a legend so I can quickly look at it when I get confused. I hesitate to mention this, because I feel stupid, but another thing that trips me up is the use of the words “value” and “responsibility”. For instance, someone will say, “This is your most dominate function; the one you feel responsible for…”. Responsible as in I feel responsible for developing or nurturing it? as in I use it automatically? as in I feel responsible to be the one in a group to use this function? I need a synonym if anyone can help me better understand how these words are used in this context.☺️ Again, thank you for taking the time to record this video.
Saying someone is "responsible" for a function is more accurate than saying, for example, that they "want to" or "like to" use it. For example, an ISFJ might tell you that they don't like organizing, they don't want to do it, but they will spend their whole afternoon arranging their kitchen drawers without freaking out about it because they feel responsible for that.
@@FrankJames Might be a bit too much to ask, but could it be possible to give more examples of this responsibility in the other cognitive functions? 🤔 That example right there was SO helpful for me, thank you so much. 🙏 + What I have a lot of trouble understanding is how a cognitive function manifests in its position. For example, how does Ti manifest in the dom, 2nd, 3rd, and inf function? I tried to look for it but the explanations are SO ambiguous and not helpful at all. Especially the perceiving functions, they are much harder to understand (at least for me)... For example: "Auxiliary Introverted Intuition As an auxiliary function, Ni manifests as an understanding of how one ought to go about accomplishing his or her goals, based on a keen intuitive perception of how various courses of action are likely to unfold. The auxiliary-Ni monologue: “How can I use my intuitive knowledge about how things are connected in order to achieve what I want?”" (source: thoughtcatalog .com) That's helpful for someone who already has it (kinda), but how can an outsider figure that out? I know I gave the worst example ever with Ni, but I think you can understand what I mean 😅 You already have a video about how to recognize them and that's really helpful, but one about that would also be even more helpful for someone who is trying to understand mbti as a whole, in my opinion. Thank you so much for reading this 🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@Carol_65 I think he did a video long time ago showing people driving in a car. With the dominant function behind the wheel, the adult. And secondary function in passenger seat at a younger age, and the other two in the back seat at younger and younger ages (weaker in their ability to deal with things outside their comfort zone I think, if that makes sense). Hmmm, now I see why some therapists ask you "who is driving your car? If they jump out what will YOU do?" I think the goal is to work on our weaker functions to become more well rounded people? That was a good visual for me
@@recoveringsoul755 I don‘t remember seeing this video. That would be a good one to watch. 😃 I‘ll look to see if I can find it on his channel. If not, I wonder why he removed it. It seems like an excellent visual example.
Thank you, you never know too much about the functions. I remember my frustration when I first got to MBTI community and no one could explain them to me. Now I know a lot but I am still expanding my understanding.
I literally took notes, wrote rules to detect each cognitive function and I am going through every personality type starting from my close ones as if I don't have an important exam in a few days lol. Thank you for unraveling us the secrets of this cognitive function realm Frank!
From what I've understood: Introvert type dominant function is the auxiliary function of the extrovert type and vice-versa. I-Type Dom Aux │ Dom Aux E-Type INFP- Fi Ne │ Ne Fi -ENFP ISFP- Fi Se │ Se Fi -ESFP INTP- Ti Ne │ Ne Ti -ENTP ISTP- Ti Se │ Se Ti -ESTP INFJ- Ni Fe │ Fe Ni -ENFJ INTJ- Ni Te │ Te Ni -ENTJ ISTJ- Si Te │ Te Si -ESTJ ISFJ- Si Fe │ Fe Si -ESFJ For each type: Tertiary (3rd) function is the polarity function of its auxiliary Inferior (4th) function is the polarity function of its dominant Non-preferred functions (either repressed or suppressed in the unconscious) are stimulated behavioral responses such as defense mechanism that swerve off from an aversion stimuli. I suggest that you'd also tackle cognitive functions citing other proponents on personality theories. It'd widen the scope on understanding human behavior and it'll be more FUN to learn from each of 'em! :)
I would also say your second and third function ability can be quite influenced by how introverted you are. For instance a more extroverted social infj is going to have much higher Fe ability, a shut in infj will have a stronger ti ability. At the same time if an INFJ that was a shut in this out into the world their Fe judgements will definitely loom large in there decision making
I'm just gonna say what i understood about this, while making it a bit more simple to people : 16:49 E (J/P = Dom = E) = Extroverted < I (J/P = Aux = E) = Introverted < S - Sensing N - Intuitive F - Feeling T - Thinking P - Perceiving (N, S) J - Judging (F, T) (Mostly based around where the arrows are, but decided to leave a bit more in case people forget about those besides the arrows.) - INTP
I am extroverted and it took me long time to change my view about life. The psychology knowledge is a must in order to understand others and guide them on the right direction. When one gave that lack it can not be a total intelligent person. The extroverts does not fit with introverts. Is a bad match that will lead to nothing. Open your eyes and see the reallity.
As an ENFJ, I definitely feel like an extrovert, but I’ve always felt like I had an introverted-intuitive side of myself. So learning that my second function was actually introverted intuition explained a lot. This video was so interesting!!
Oh plsss Im still confuse, Im ENFP when I was kid surely but as I came to puberty I start not having much friends and only little circle of group and now I dont have close ones but I talk to people only If I want them Im confuse like Im a loner at class and then I'll be in martial arts class were I can get along with my mates and teacher even we only met for twice a week 🤦🏻♀️
I never realized how important the functions were until I started questioning whether I was actually an INTP (self-typed) or actually an INTJ. When I really dug into the differences was when I first discovered that it's NOT a tiny "one-letter difference" where INTJ is just the slightly more organized version of INTP. I discovered function stacks, and that the two types have _completely different stacks_ with _completely different functions!!!_ DUDE. When all was said and done and I'd studied the function stacks, I found I was definitely NiTeFiSe. Also, you know it's a lot to take in when the "brainiac type" (me) slows the video down from 2x speed to regular speed because I can't memorize that much at once 😂
Wait how did you know your dominant is Ni? I tried studying the cognitive functions and I've narrowed it down to ENTJ and INTJ, I just can't find out if my dominant is Ni or Te since I use both in a regular basis and don't know which one I use more
@@inirah486 That's a great question! The main method that usually works for me is to determine which of two things is of higher value to me by asking myself which one I fall back to in moments of high stress or disillusionment. For me, I also use Te and Ni pretty evenly, but in moments of high stress or disillusionment, I fall back on relying heavily on my _excellent_ gut instinct and sense of patterns to watch out for, not so much taking immediate and decisive action based on current intelligence. Hope that helps! :)
You just proved to me that you were absolutely not intp because i am and i *sped up* the video! It fascinates me how a lot of ppl are ignorant about these cognitive functions when they are literally the root of the mbti personalities study
I have not fully grasped the cognitive functions but I love learning about them! Learning about personalities have helped me so much in understanding myself and everyone around me so I can have better relationships with them!
Finally! It clicked.... After months of not paying attention to cognitive functions because I didn't have time/motivation, I understand now. It's so cool! Thank you, I can now understand a bunch better!
So truee.. as an intp, I find myself constantly in negative situations because I didn't show or tell my feelings. And sometimes people around me just don't get it, and make it worse..
i have to say this is the most informative video on mbti i think i've ever seen. it's definitely the first thing i've seen that helps to explain why functions are what they are, why you can't just not have a sensing function, why they can't all be introverted, etc. i feel like i'm finally starting to understand why i have the functions i do, especially the tertiary and inferior functions.
Me, an INFP, getting to the part where he explains Si and remembering when I used to organize the books I read on the bookshelves in the school library and not understanding why nobody just put them in the right order when they put them back
ENFP here! What an incredible video! You did an amazing job keeping us engaged by adding banter without every trailing far enough gor us to lose track. I never understood this before today but the way you laid out that ENFJ example was just 😩👌 The rest of the types just clicked after that! Thank you for dropping this on us. Can you make some more of these study-type videos? It looks like it may be more work and set up, but it came out so very well. I hope to see more soon! Take care!
Yes is info graphics persona. When one need to get hired, than it needs to reflect over the parteners and the team. Because if they dont have anything in common , all is/will be wrong.
ENFP Function Stack: Dom: Ne (extroverted intuition) Aux: Fi (introverted feeling) Ter: Te (extroverted thinking) 4: Si (introverted sensing) I think i got that. Now it's time to go back and learn more about what those mean so i can improve so i can be less of a hot mess growing up 😎
Growing your Fi by reading books about difficult subjects and grey areas, and growing your Te by making plans and sticking with them - that’s what helped me a lot :)
@@miahan8988 ah, thank you so much. Do you know any specific topics for growing Fi? Like a few examples? Thank you for the advice btw, it's much appreciated. I didn't know that's how you grew those areas. I'll definitely work on those things
Just a little advice: Your type doesn't determine your functions, your functions determine your type. I'd suggest reading and learning about functions to properly type yourself.

Been trying to study the cognitive functions for over a year. I’ve been doing a lot of research but a lot of it has always been muddled, this *CLEARS UP A LOT*. Like seriously. Very helpful frank!! I’m impressed how cleanly you explain smth as complicated as this
I’ve been lately finding more and more signs of me being an INFJ (when I’m in a good mental state mostly, and when I’m under stress I either look like an INTJ or go into a loop)
Ive watched this video about 8 times. Just trying to make sure it all sinks into my brain. Also because i enjoy Frank's subtleties so much. Great video, man!
FJ would be the coolest teacher ever in high school - no joke. The short hand of the functions just blew my mind. Literally blew my mind. I had no idea what they meant or the logic of why those were the letters. .. And now I feel dumb. :p
Alexis Kingsley also explains cognitive functions really well on her channel. She and FJ are my go-to people for MBTi info. I’d love to see a Frank and Alexis collab! Putting that out in the universe
This is BY FAR the most informative video I've ever seen on the personalities. I literally got my notepad out. Amazing, Frank. Since I'm not quite sure of my personality type (I took it many many years ago, and am not sure it still applies), I used this to try to retroactively figure out my type. Not completely successful but I learned so much anyway.
As a person with the worst learning memory ever. I'd like to summarize everything, so that when I come back to this video some day, I won't need to burn 10 million brain cells understanding everything again. [ WHAT IS COGNITIVE FUNCTION ] - an idea proposed by Carl Jung when he wrote psychological types. According to him, these are the processes of the psyche. They are ways that we become aware of information to a degree make conclusions about what is real. The processes of making decisions. [ SUMMARIZATION ] • PERCEIVING is how we become aware of reality. And the two ways we perceive informations are -intuition- and -sensing-. Intuition - seeing the concepts, patterns and what is possible Sensing - looking the facts, details, and what is provable • JUDGING is how we make decisions. The processes by which we make decisions are either through -feeling- or -thinking-. Feeling - judging things based on value or appropriateness, what is right or wrong. Thinking - judging things based on logic. If it will make sense or get a result. • INTUITION, SENSING FEELING, THINKING. These 4 cognitive functions can be broken down more. Either being extroverted or introverted, down into the 8 cognitive functions. Extroverted - are outward-focused. Not as personal. They are broader in Scope. They gather in more information. Introverted - are inward-focused. They're personal. They're narrower but deeper in scope. They like to organize and narrow down information. [ WHAT EXACTLY ARE THE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS ] There are two big categories for cognitive functions, the perceiving and judging. Perceiving functions are INTUITION and SENSING (it's how we see information) while Judging functions are FEELING and THINKING (it's how we judge or make decisions). And these four functions have two different versions, which is the introverted and extroverted: INTUITION is seeing the patterns and what is possible, so; [Ni] Introverted Intuition wants to narrow down things, into as few abstract concepts as possible, and; [Ne] Extroverted Intuition wants to continually gather and create new connections. Sensing is looking at the facts and what is provable, so; [Si] Introverted Sensing is focused on organizing those facts or information, and; [Se] Extroverted Sensing is focused on gathering new information and new experiences. Feeling is judging things based on value or appropriateness, what is right or wrong, so; [Fi] Introverted Feeling is the process of making decisions based on what the person themselves values. Based on their own values. [Fe] Extroverted Feeling is the process of making decisions based on what is broadly valued. Thinking is judging things based on logic. If it will make sense or get a result, so; [Ti] Introverted Thinking is the process of making logical decision with the self as the decision-maker. [Te] Extroverted Thinking is the process of making logical decision focused outwards and rely on other's input. Those are the 8 cognitive functions. Ne, Ni, Se, Si, Fe, Fi, Te and Ti. I can't continue to how the way these 8 will incorporate to make 16 personalities, it's out my fingers energy. ps. This is the farthest I can go lmao I was so confused at first, but after breaking down everything, it's is now crystal clear. BIG THANKS TO FRANK!! I've finally learned about this yeah! lol infp here btw, what is Frank's personality type?
Dear Frank, please make a follow-up video on this! This was fantastically executed, would love to learn more about the implications of the cognitive functions placements, etc.
Okay, I spent 20 minutes to watch the first 4 minutes and 46 seconds. I'm Brazilian, so I speak portuguese, and when watching such a deep video I have to go very focused and pay a lot of attention. But these were some very interesting and informative minutes, and I'm probably gonna stay about an hour watching the whole thing: and it will be awesome, since you make this amazing. I definitely started by just googling INFP cognitive functions and reading up on what sources have to say. XD My experience with the cognitive functions is definitely that I try my hardest to base my decisions on my internalized values--it's very important for me to act morally, so Fi makes sense to me. I also have always been good at making connections and wrapping my head around abstract ideas (Ne). I mostly see Si when I'm remembering details in emotional contexts--if I'm telling a story, I'll occasionally cycle back in time to highlight a detail I neglected to mention in the first go-around, even if it isn't critical to the point of the story. And nowhere is my dislike of Te more obvious than when at the grocery store trying to decide between similar products. Especially if I don't have much energy for decision making, I can tend to be like "oh I don't know which of these choices will make me happiest or align most closely with what's important right now, oh no oh no" 😅
I want to add that the tertiary function can be preferred over the aux function since it’s more of a comfort function that can keep you in (unhealthy) loops, whereas the aux function serves more as an advisory role. That’s why the tertiary function is also called the “child function”, since we have a naive or childish view of it, making it tempting to use as our support function. Meanwhile the aux function is often known as the “parent function” since it’s the one that should be advising your dominant. But it’s like eating your vegetables. You don’t want to do it but it’s good for you to do so. As an INTP, I use my Si tertiary all the time since I find it comfortable to use. But Ne (which is the parent function) actively helps me grow and mature. The idea that we use our tertiary when we become adults refers to our HEALTHY use of that function. When immature, we still use it but it’s not being used properly
I'm def going to have to rewatch it so I can pause it, get stuff straight in my head, and then move on. Lots of information to absorb! Thanks, Frank.👍😊 And for the drawrings.😅
Wow! I usually really dislike videos which try to be informative and funny at the same time, but you nailed it. Super to the point, really well structured, even when there were funny moments they weren't trying to obscure the topic. Finally properly understand this goddamn thing!
I literally watched all the videos that explains the cognitive function I didn’t understand anything at all and some of them were boring and not interesting at all so I stopped watching but I really enjoyed watching this so entertaining and interesting and I finally understand what cognitive functions is all about , Thank you FJ ❤
thank u fj i finally dont need to spend another hour reading cognitive functions and end up with doing other stuff and learning nothing. this video really help a lot.
I'm an INTP and I didn't know how you figure out which is dominant. I just knew that INTPs were introverted thinking. The way I taught myself is this. Ip types are on the right side and this flips to the left side if either letter changes. So IJs dominant is on the left side. And EJs dominant will flip back to the right side. And of course if you are introverted the dominant will be as well. I had a rudimentary understanding of MBTI at that point. I later figured out the right way but now I just use my way because it works.
Oh thanks, you are great ! I needed THIS video to share to people around me ! 💙 Perfect timing with life, this video is perfect, to share it all over the world. Since I discovered your channel on March. It has changed my way to see the world and people forever. We are 2 Level above. As an INFJ, and I am a real praradox, I use equaly both F & T to make decisions.
I've always found the MBTI model suspiciously neat, and I know Jung wasn't really a fan. MBTI still seems to work, and I personally like it, but I believe there are people who have introverted thinking and introverted intuition as their two top functions -- something that is impossible within the MBTI system.
Thank you for the explanation!!! I started digging into this stuff a few days ago and this is super timely for me. It totally blew my mind to look at the fourth function because it explained SO much. It definitely solidified that I’m am INFJ and I struggle with extroverted sensing a LOT. I’m easily overstimulated. I love static sorts of stimuli… so I can sip it in rather than being immersed… quiet hikes in pretty places, love running in the forest preserve letting my mind go all over while I slowly take in small bits of sensory info, but put me in a loud crowded place or confront me with flashing lights or even uncomfortable clothes and I am miserable. Im also lousy at staying present. My mind tends to go elsewhere unless I really focus on staying present and that can almost feel painful to do. I found an article about it and it basically described so much of what I struggle with in life. I figure(d) I have sensory integration disorder for years. Feels better to think of it as the price I pay for my insight 😀
Hey Frank, you should do polls to see what percent of viewers are what personality type, you can do the poles weekly or daily or whatever you prefer, you can do your poles based on the groups of the 16 personalities, i.e: analysts (xNTx types), diplomats (xNFx types), sentinels (xSxJ types), and finally explorers (xSxP types).

To be honest i tried my best learning cognitive functions. However Frank, you're the only one who could teach me DEEPLY about these functions, thank you so much and i love the way you explain. I would like to recommend you to use more pictures and GIFs in your video's "learning videos" for visual learners.. that's it the rest you're the best🎉🎉❤
you did damn good. Almost brings me back to high school. Like a teacher is teaching me stuff there. And stuff. Even if I already know about this I actually got it explained to me in an easier way than I could ever explain it to someone else.
What I learnt from this video: By looking at the combination of first two cognitive functions, the personality type can be determined, and it would be a more accurate deduction than just looking at the four letters. I would go as far to denote each cognitive function a single letter and thus each personality type with just two letters - Ni - A Ne - B Si - C Se - D Ti - E Te - F Fi - G Fe - H ESFP - DG ESTP - DE ENFP - BG ENTP - BE ESFJ - HC ENFJ - HA ESTJ - FC ENTJ - FA INFP - GB ISFP - GD INTP - EB ISTP - ED ISFJ - CH ISTJ - CF INFJ - AH INTJ - AF
I was so confused about all this stuff before watching this video. This is an masterpiece; especially since you’re learning while FJ is still making it funny.

Once you get into cognitive functions and somewhat understand it, you can’t get out of mbti, seriously, it’s so interesting even though it’s repetitive.
That's right
This is kind of my fear, tbh. I haven’t gotten too deeply entrenched in MBTI since then because of this, even though I think it’s so interesting.
i’m literally obsessed

@@FrankJames hello franky man
@@FrankJames Yes, hello fellow Ni dom.
Some more help for newbies; Here is the core question each function asks (IMHO):
Se - What is happening right now in this situation?

How people talk about mbti: “I’m an ENTJ and you’re an ENTP, so I’m the more organized version of you!”
It was so realistic it was frightening 😂
Yeah, that was a fun vid. And very true.

@@pawa303 笑 笑 笑
real. someone used mine plus some questions to determine im an intp lol
the F vs T functions are the judging functions. you make decisions with them. your F vs T are always the opposite of each other.
Fi - personal values (priortizing your own likes, taste, morals, hobbies, etc. "following your heart")
Te - tribe reasoning (prioritizing other people's advice that's backed up with their logic, facts, data. trusting the consensus. wants people to work together effectively)
Ti - personal reasoning (prioritizing what makes sense to you with your own findings, skeptical of outside reasoning and often asking questions)
Fe - tribe values (prioritizing what other people like and value. trusts common ethics. seeks harmony)
--------------
N vs S are percieving functions. they're about how you process your surroundings which you then go on to use to make decisions. N and S also gotta be opposites.
Ne - gathering the abstract (consuming ideas, patterns, and possibilities in a scattered frenzied way. and it spits out these things chaotically)
Si - organizing the concrete (taking the time to break down information and past experiences in a linear fashion. uses familiarity to try to control the environment)
Se - gathering the concrete (consuming facts and surroundings, truly going with the sensory flow living in the moment. in a frenzied chaotic way as well)
Ni - organizing the abstract (taking the time to process the patterns and zeroe in on few ideas to reach a point in a linear way. breaks down concepts. uses predictability to try to take control)
---------------------------------‐--------------------------
regarding the xxxP and xxxJ stuff. an easier way to memorize function stacks based off of those letters is this:
P types prefer introverted judging (Fi/Ti) and extroverted percieving (Ne/Se)
J types prefer extroverted judging (Fe/Te) and introverted percieving (Ni/Si)
Ni/Si are about control and Ne/Se are about chaos, that's the typical J vs P. although this mostly applies to IxxJs vs ExxPs. IxxPs and ExxJs are way more chill when it comes to that balance
enough about letters. your inner and outer cognitive functions are your dominant and your inferior, and they're opposites. their imbalance is basically your life struggle. like doing Ne all the time without effort, but you hate Si-ing. yet the less you do your inferior function, the worse you as a person function and the more unhealthy you get
your middle functions are also opposite but work together a lot better. like using your reasoning (Ti) to make comfort people (Fe) is a common thing i see.
if your first function is introverted, your second needs to be extroverted. if you have Ne first you cant have Te second. it can only be 3rd.
Nice
@@Righthand_ thanks!
Thanks
Niceuuu
I would say Si is more related to personal tastes than Fi - This is just one mistake out of the huge number of mistakes in MBTI. Just read what Jung wrote about Si and you will quickly find that the MBTI completely misunderstood the functions.
About the stack:
The first letter tells you if your dominant function is Extroverted (e) or Introverted (i)
The fourth letter tells you what's your Extroverted function, either Judging (J) or Perceiving (P)
For example, INFJ:
The first function is introverted, and the extroverted function is Feeling (because of the J), so it has Fe somewhere
So its stack must be
Ni (first is introverted, can't be Fe)
Fe (Preferred judging function)
Ti (Opposite from Fe)
Se (Opposite from Ni)
You can really type yourself accurately with this info.
For example, I'm an INFJ, and even I'm not sure if I prefer Ni or Fe for my dominant function, I'm sure my inferior function is Se because I struggle so much with the sensible world, but not that much with making rational decisions (Ti)
Anyway, the rest of the stacks:
INTJ: Ni Te Fi Se
ENFJ: Fe Ni Se Ti
ENTJ: Te Ni Se Fi
INFP: Fi Ne Si Te
ENFP: Ne Fi Te Si
INTP: Ti Ne Si Fe
ENTP: Ne Ti Fe Si
ISFJ: Si Fe Ti Ne
ISTJ: Si Te Fi Ne
ESFJ: Fe Si Ne Ti
ESTJ: Te Si Ne Fi
ISFP: Fi Se Ni Te
ISTP: Ti Se Ni Fe
ESFP: Se Fi Te Ni
ESTP: Se Ti Fe Ni
Also! Your functions determine your type, not otherwise.
You have to find out what function you use the most to actually know what is your type.

The silly thing is since we use our brains in different ways, people will have different ways to remember. Love all the shares!!
Just a disclaimer, your 3rd (tertiary) function isn't always "not preferred". Some people are jumpers/in loops, meaning they run with their 1st and 3rd function, rather than their 1st and 2nd. For example, an ESFP could be SeTe rather than SeFi
that's true, and I almost put that in this video, but since it is not traditional MBTI I figured I'd save it for its own vid
Isn’t that called looping and is unhealthy if done for too long?
@@offsetsface2135 yeah, looping is like ignoring your second function and using more the third one but kinda using it in a unhealthy way
it’s an OP thing i guess
It's rare for people to have extraverted perceiving and extraverted judging function as dominant and auxiliary function. That doesn't mean people aren't more likely to exhibit their two extraverted functions to others.
I usually have no idea what he's talking bout half the time. He's just entertaining to watch, so I'll keep watching.
Let me guess, enfp?
Ni= Future focused, abstract, very deep, high pattern recognition skills, doesn't enjoy working with too many ideas all at once, gets overwhelmed if they need to make too many fast decisions
Ne= Very imaginative, good at seeing possibilities, spontaneous, likes to juggle between multiple ideas or concepts, enjoy exploration.
Perceiving functions (XXXP) = Intuition, sensing
Judging functions (XXXJ) = Thinking, feeling
The first function can be determined by the first and last letter of a personality, if the personality has an "E" as their first letter then their first function will be extroverted, if the first letter is "I" then the first function will be introverted.
Ni will have Se
Te will have Fi
Fe will have Ti
An ENTJ will have extroverted thinking as their first function because they are an extrovert, they have J as their last letter and they are a thinker.
In conclusion, an ENTJ has extroverted thinking as ther first function (they're extroverted and also a judging type)
The last function is introverted feeling because that's the opposite of the first.

I'd say an isfp, infp, and enfp are the types who struggle the most in this society. They are the ones who really have to suffer consequences for something that should be commended and nurtured... to all of you who are just now learning the functions, or if your an fi user, my words will ring true eventually if not now.
* you're.
**laughcry in Ti user**
as an enfp i can confirm
Fe users just have different struggles.
I need a synonym if anyone can help me better understand how these words are used in this context.☺️
Again, thank you for taking the time to record this video.
@@FrankJames Ok, thank you. Examples definitely make things a bit clearer for me.
@@FrankJames Might be a bit too much to ask, but could it be possible to give more examples of this responsibility in the other cognitive functions? 🤔 That example right there was SO helpful for me, thank you so much. 🙏
+ What I have a lot of trouble understanding is how a cognitive function manifests in its position. For example, how does Ti manifest in the dom, 2nd, 3rd, and inf function? I tried to look for it but the explanations are SO ambiguous and not helpful at all. Especially the perceiving functions, they are much harder to understand (at least for me)...
For example:
"Auxiliary Introverted Intuition
As an auxiliary function, Ni manifests as an understanding of how one ought to go about accomplishing his or her goals, based on a keen intuitive perception of how various courses of action are likely to unfold.
The auxiliary-Ni monologue: “How can I use my intuitive knowledge about how things are connected in order to achieve what I want?”"
(source: thoughtcatalog .com)
That's helpful for someone who already has it (kinda), but how can an outsider figure that out?
From what I've understood:
Introvert type dominant function is the auxiliary function of the extrovert type and vice-versa.
I-Type Dom Aux │ Dom Aux E-Type
INFP- Fi Ne │ Ne Fi -ENFP
ISFP- Fi Se │ Se Fi -ESFP
INTP- Ti Ne │ Ne Ti -ENTP
ISTP- Ti Se │ Se Ti -ESTP
INFJ- Ni Fe │ Fe Ni -ENFJ
INTJ- Ni Te │ Te Ni -ENTJ
ISTJ- Si Te │ Te Si -ESTJ
ISFJ- Si Fe │ Fe Si -ESFJ
For each type:
Tertiary (3rd) function is the polarity function of its auxiliary
Inferior (4th) function is the polarity function of its dominant
Non-preferred functions (either repressed or suppressed in the unconscious) are stimulated behavioral responses such as defense mechanism that swerve off from an aversion stimuli.

This was a super important video to make and you nailed it! Awesome job, Frank!
i love watching you two! :)
just found your channel- love it
I always watches your videos too. Your videos are one of the best content of UA-cam for understanding MBTI types
I'm already aware of how this all works but I still watched it because Frank just manages to make it entertaining no matter what lol
I'm just gonna say what i understood about this, while making it a bit more simple to people : 16:49
E (J/P = Dom = E) = Extroverted <
I (J/P = Aux = E) = Introverted <
S - Sensing
N - Intuitive
F - Feeling
T - Thinking
P - Perceiving (N, S)
J - Judging (F, T)
(Mostly based around where the arrows are, but decided to leave a bit more in case people forget about those besides the arrows.)
- INTP
I am extroverted and it took me long time to change my view about life. The psychology knowledge is a must in order to understand others and guide them on the right direction. When one gave that lack it can not be a total intelligent person. The extroverts does not fit with introverts. Is a bad match that will lead to nothing. Open your eyes and see the reallity.
As an ENFJ, I definitely feel like an extrovert, but I’ve always felt like I had an introverted-intuitive side of myself. So learning that my second function was actually introverted intuition explained a lot. This video was so interesting!!
Oh plsss Im still confuse, Im ENFP when I was kid surely but as I came to puberty I start not having much friends and only little circle of group and now I dont have close ones but I talk to people only If I want them
Im confuse like Im a loner at class and then I'll be in martial arts class were I can get along with my mates and teacher even we only met for twice a week 🤦🏻♀️
You have Ni?
@@tiny2315 that's... what I said in my comment :)
Am I the only one who thinks that Frank James would make a great school teacher? I could imagine the kids loving his classes.
Finally a real mbti. I wonder where r those infp-t and infj-t comments. -intp 5w6
Thank you, I can now understand a bunch better!
same
I need this. (Wait faster
So truee.. as an intp, I find myself constantly in negative situations because I didn't show or tell my feelings.
Me, an INFP, getting to the part where he explains Si and remembering when I used to organize the books I read on the bookshelves in the school library and not understanding why nobody just put them in the right order when they put them back
Can't believe you just tossed his book like that lol
I found it hilarious xD
ENFP here! What an incredible video! You did an amazing job keeping us engaged by adding banter without every trailing far enough gor us to lose track. I never understood this before today but the way you laid out that ENFJ example was just 😩👌
The rest of the types just clicked after that! Thank you for dropping this on us. Can you make some more of these study-type videos? It looks like it may be more work and set up, but it came out so very well. I hope to see more soon! Take care!
It's like maths, but much more INTERESTING🤩 because it's about something much more closer and relatable to someone's life
Yes is info graphics persona. When one need to get hired, than it needs to reflect over the parteners and the team. Because if they dont have anything in common , all is/will be wrong.
ENFP Function Stack:
Dom: Ne (extroverted intuition)
Aux: Fi (introverted feeling)
Ter: Te (extroverted thinking)
4: Si (introverted sensing)
I think i got that.
@@miliniumo147 topics that helped me grow most: people writing about their PTSD struggles, abuse, depression, mental issues (written by people who struggle with them), stories about overcoming adversity, about selflessness, making mistakes and learning from them, reading about people who have regrets - all this stuff helped jumpstart my Fi.
Putting that out in the universe
thank you for this comment- I watched a ton of her videos
The way he knows we’ve just watched an ad and hits us with the “Welcome back” love it .
[ WHAT IS COGNITIVE FUNCTION ]
- an idea proposed by Carl Jung when he wrote psychological types. According to him, these are the processes of the psyche. They are ways that we become aware of information to a degree make conclusions about what is real. The processes of making decisions.
[ SUMMARIZATION ]
• PERCEIVING is how we become aware of reality. And the two ways we perceive informations are -intuition- and -sensing-.
Intuition - seeing the concepts, patterns and what is possible
Sensing - looking the facts, details, and what is provable
• JUDGING is how we make decisions.
[ WHAT EXACTLY ARE THE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS ]
There are two big categories for cognitive functions, the perceiving and judging.
Perceiving functions are INTUITION and SENSING (it's how we see information)
while
Judging functions are FEELING and THINKING (it's how we judge or make decisions).
And these four functions have two different versions, which is the introverted and extroverted:
INTUITION is seeing the patterns and what is possible, so;
[Ni] Introverted Intuition wants to narrow down things, into as few abstract concepts as possible, and;
[Ne] Extroverted Intuition wants to continually gather and create new connections.
Sensing is looking at the facts and what is provable, so;
[Si] Introverted Sensing is focused on organizing those facts or information, and;
[Se] Extroverted Sensing is focused on gathering new information and new experiences.
Feeling is judging things based on value or appropriateness, what is right or wrong, so;
[Fi] Introverted Feeling is the process of making decisions based on what the person themselves values. Based on their own values.
[Fe] Extroverted Feeling is the process of making decisions based on what is broadly valued.
Thinking is judging things based on logic. If it will make sense or get a result, so;
[Ti] Introverted Thinking is the process of making logical decision with the self as the decision-maker.
[Te] Extroverted Thinking is the process of making logical decision focused outwards and rely on other's input.
Those are the 8 cognitive functions. Ne, Ni, Se, Si, Fe, Fi, Te and Ti. I can't continue to how the way these 8 will incorporate to make 16 personalities, it's out my fingers energy.
ps. This is the farthest I can go lmao
I was so confused at first, but after breaking down everything, it's is now crystal clear. BIG THANKS TO FRANK!! I've finally learned about this yeah! lol

For an INTJ this video is a treat. Not confusing but hella entertaining. Thanks FJ. Your Fe is showing 😂reassuring people like every 3 sentence so they don’t get bored
I definitely started by just googling INFP cognitive functions and reading up on what sources have to say. XD
My experience with the cognitive functions is definitely that I try my hardest to base my decisions on my internalized values--it's very important for me to act morally, so Fi makes sense to me.
Especially if I don't have much energy for decision making, I can tend to be like "oh I don't know which of these choices will make me happiest or align most closely with what's important right now, oh no oh no" 😅
Omg I do that almost everytime I tell a story. I never seen anyone talk about that
This is my learning style 100%. The way you talk us perfect

When I heard Frank say that he had a lot of INFPs watching as I took notes, I literally had to do a double take xD (as an INFP myself)

I've always found the MBTI model suspiciously neat, and I know Jung wasn't really a fan. MBTI still seems to work, and I personally like it, but I believe there are people who have introverted thinking and introverted intuition as their two top functions -- something that is impossible within the MBTI system.

Thank you so much, Frank! I used to be so confused on cognitive functions, but this really helped.
I knew the concept before, but this was great to watch :) waiting for more discussions on inferior functions!
the thing I say the most on a daily basis is when I criticize someone and tell them that they're not making sense. Thx Ti
Hey Frank, you should do polls to see what percent of viewers are what personality type, you can do the poles weekly or daily or whatever you prefer, you can do your poles based on the groups of the 16 personalities, i.e: analysts (xNTx types), diplomats (xNFx types), sentinels (xSxJ types), and finally explorers (xSxP types).

wait so aliens invaded your brain?
that is legit what she said to me.
What I learnt from this video:
By looking at the combination of first two cognitive functions, the personality type can be determined, and it would be a more accurate deduction than just looking at the four letters.
I would go as far to denote each cognitive function a single letter and thus each personality type with just two letters -
Ni - A
Ne - B
Si - C
Se - D
Ti - E
Te - F
Fi - G
Fe - H
ESFP - DG
ESTP - DE
ENFP - BG
ENTP - BE
ESFJ - HC
ENFJ - HA
ESTJ - FC
ENTJ - FA
INFP - GB
ISFP - GD
INTP - EB
ISTP - ED
ISFJ - CH
ISTJ - CF
INFJ - AH
INTJ - AF
