Joe Frazier beat Oscar Bonavena by SD in round 10 of 10
    Date: 1966-09-21
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
    Referee: Mark Conn 6-4
    Judge: Joe Eppy 5-4
    Judge: Nick Gamboli 5-8
    Unofficial UPI scorecard: 6-4 Frazier
    Unofficial AP scorecard: 6-3-1 Frazier
Frazier Has To Come Off The Canvas To Score Win
Bull-like Oscar Bonavena, the burly, plodding fighter with the big mop of hair who calls himself "Ringo" and the "South American Beatle," has left Joe Frazier with wary memories of a "Hard Day's Night."
The lumbering 205-pounder from Buenos Aires doesn't have Frazier's potential of eventually becoming a classy fighter-but the 2-1 underdog gave Frazier the fight of his 14-month pro career Wednesday night before losing an unpopular 10-round split decision.
Bonavena decked Frazier twice in the second round but couldn't keep him there. The 203½ pound Frazier came back gamely with a relentless, punishing attack that gave him the close decision in the eyes of the judges, although most of the 9,069 fans at Madison Square Garden, who were Bonavena fans, booed the decision.
It was close enough to go either way with referee Mark Conn giving it to Frazier 6-4 in rounds, while judge Joe Eppy had Frazier 5-4-1. But judge Nick Gamboli had it 5-5 in rounds and Bonavena 7-5 on points. United Press International scored it 6-4 for Frazier.
It was unbeaten Frazier's 12th straight victory and kept him on his current timetable that he hopes eventually will lead to a shot at heavyweight champion Cassius Clay.
But unlike fighters who are always screaming for a shot at the champion, Frazier, the 1964 Olympic champion, still figures he's 18 months away from being ready for Clay.

I can't thank you enough. I've been sick for about a week and discovered your channel. I humbly make a request: is it possible to find the full Frazier Bonvanena rematch? Clips exist, but I would be incredibly grateful to see the full fight.
If not, please let me thank you one more time for your wonderful channel. You've posted timeless fights between warriors whose names will never be forgotten.

Joe showed class in and out of the ring. After each round he gave Bonavena a friendly pat. When Ali wasn’t fighting due to being stripped of his title for objecting to the war, Frazier helped him financially. It bothered him deeply that Muhammad later ridiculed and called him a monkey. I love Ali but I never appreciated that aspect of him. Two incredibly black athletes.

Ali was a master at selling a fight, he tormented Joe with the crazy insulting crap to hype and sell his fights pay per view, after they retired they were the best of true friends. The Ali/Frazier trilogy is the greatest trilogy in HW boxing history. In the pre-fight interviews Ali hitting the stuffed teddy bear gorilla and saying, "it's gonna be a chiller, a killer and a thriller when I beat the gorilla in Manilla to hype up their third fight was funny as f**k while Ali was punching the little stuffed gorilla.

Bonavena problem to why he lost decision was two fold he was focused on knock out punch instead of trying to get his jab and combinations working that lead to those knockdowns against Fraser in early rounds. Second he started to go into cruise control. Thinking he had a big enough lead on points, that he didn’t need to work too hard. That is where Fraser started to smoke and knew he had to win most of the rounds to win the bout. But that fight definitely opened the way for a rematch.

nah man, ringo worked hard the whole 10 rounds even though he was confortably ahead with the 2 knockdowns. he gave frazier a crash course in how to work the clinch, the true reason why he lost is because of biased judgement and because he didn't let joe fall in the 10th right here 30:27 . if this was a 15th or even a 12th rounder frazier would be on a stretcher, he got way better after this fight.

Saludos

Frazier had an incredible left hook and a tremendous will in his prime but was extremely small for a heavyweight. It was evident by what George Foreman did to him twice that the super sized heavweight fighters of recent times would have destroyed him. Bonavena won this fight. And he was leading against Ali until Ali dropped him in the 15th. So many good heavyweights at this time, Chuvalo, Quarry, Boneveana, Ingo. Even Patterson was competitive. And Foreman and Holmes and Norton coming up in a few years. Wow, there should have been an international Heavyweight title for guys not fighting the big 3 heavyweights.
(Ali, Frazier, Foreman). Round out the group with Ron Lyle and Ernie Shavers and keep them busy with a lot of great fights headlining just the core talent which was so deep.
Because the money was on just these three we have some serious gaps in matchups that never happened. Think about it:
Ken Norton never fought Joe Frazier. That should have happened!
No rematch between George Foreman and Ali??? The champ always gets a return bout right?
    Foreman never fought Larry Holmes?
Because of this, you cannot rank a few of these fighters against the all-time great. You can have an opinion, but you need to prove it in the ring!
A similar thing happened during the 1950s with middleweights: Champs Robinson, Fulmer, Lamotta, Graziano, Basilio, and Zale.
All 6 were champs, But Robinson would not fight Tony Zale, even after comedian Jerry Lewis offered Robinson $300,000 dollars in 1956 money to fight Zale.
And Tyson should have fought Foreman for lineage rights.

Bonevena was a tough rugged fighter with a lot of strength, if he didnt clinch so much he would have been great to watch. Smokin Joe showed early a heart of a lion, not to many fighters would have made it off the mat after that first punch he walked into. That was a sledgehammer. Good tough fight and i thought Joe clearly won on his aggresiveness and willingness to push the fight to Bonevana. Thats one thing that the New York fighing establishment always gave points for was the fighter that was the aggressor that pushed the fight. Fighters that clinched and broke off the action were not a big point collector in New York scoring of fights.

They called him Ringo because he had a haircut like the Beatles. A great fighter who has been unfairly overlooked. His style was unflattering, awkward and unorthodox but effective. He was tragically killed in -975 from a gunshot in the heart over a n allegedly illicit affair with a man’s wife.
