First and foremost, thank you very much. Anyone worried about following this shouldn't be. If you can follow basic directions, and don't skip anything, this is foolproof. Truly. I have spent a lot of time trying to sort out all of these pieces and, at least where I was finding info, it's fragmented and hard to follow. This walks through the entire process and expects no previous knowlage of any part of the process. Ever get half way through a guide and have a step like "backup your nand," and think "how the * do I do that?" This isn't like that. Next, out of appreciation for the time you spent on this, I'm gonna ask for more. :) Please do some follow-ups on software that you like. For example which gba emulator would you use and would you grab that from Universal Updator, or ... Mostly the first thing though. Truly appreciate the time and knowlage that went in to this.

The original got guideline striked. I tried appealing it, but it didn’t get accepted. Which is why I ended up improving the video and tweaking it so it met the guidelines.
FOR ANYONE DOING THIS. this still works with 11.16 (as of september 14th 2022). BUT if you already have a Nintendo DSiWare folder you have to remove the files inside of it or else your system will just crash. if you remove the files it should be good to go!
If anyone is having the write protection error, its not software. simple look on the side if your sd card and there will be a slider thing, and if thats in the down position, simply turn it to the up position.

This is an amazing tutorial! I homebrewed my 3DS XL and have had a great experience. I do have a concern; I recently ordered a New 3DS LL (JP) and want to homebrew it, but I worry that this process may not work for the system. I haven’t received the console just yet, so I’m unsure, but any experience/advice would be great! Update: I’ve gotten the New 3DS and successfully hombrewed it using this same method, the model doesn’t make a difference.
This works as of 11-8-22, all that's missing is that you have to download a separate usm.bin file to put in the root directory, and you won't get a red screen error anymore.
Can confirm this works as of 4/5 August 2022! I did infact use a Chromebook (had to borrow a friend's) and it worked just fine, however to note; using a Chromebook you can't run .exe files (Windows file format) so the formatting of the SD card using the FAT32 3DS doesn't work unless you somehow remote into a Windows system and do it that way. I had to use the included SD card that comes with the 3DS because of this but because the first part about formatting is optional if you *are* going to use a different SD card, everything else just works like it would on anything else! Thank you for such an easy to follow and hands on video! So glad I can back up my DS library and also now play them on my new Steam Deck using EmuDeck!

Does any eShop titles / save data get affected by moving SD cards? I'm interested in modding when the online servers eventually shut down, although I might just do it in a few months, and I only have the 4GB SD card that comes with my 3DS XL (2013 I think)
The save data and apps should only be made available on the current SD where the files are made available on. There is a video that I saw that there showed that YOU DID NOT HAVE TO HACK THE CONSOLE to be able to drag and drop the entire games, and possibly save data onto the new SD card. The video did not actually show clicking on any of the games, just proof that the concept actually worked.
Nintendo is well aware of flashcards, and they apparently have some websites already set up for war zones to allow anyone to get the selected game added to your SD via the IMEI number of your console. I do not think that the SD matters or not if it is the original one that came with your device. Also Nintendo already has set guidelines for what the highest size SD can fit inside of the console, but certain Ebay sellers have shown that is not fully true(?)

the region free app imo is one of the best for the homebrew scene, just allowing you to use whatever region game cart you want is pretty decent.
Just went through this with a 2DS XL and had no issues! I used the official 3DS Hack guide at the same time to sanity check a few of the instructions but everything in this guide is still valid.
Thank you very much for the simple instructions and the links on your site!

As someone who used to mod my PSP/Vita system I've got to say modding the 3DS is on an entirely different level of challenge in comparison. Though that said, this tutorial is fantastic and insightful with the 3DS about to effectively close off it's support I can't say enough how helpful it is. For me the key sell is livestreaming 3DS footage and no doubt that is going to become a more popular practice going forward.

I updated mine to 11.6 just now. Did you had to do something different?

Great and helpful tutorial! Just did it last night (9/16/22) and it worked just fine :) quick word of advice for anyone though, when he says to delete one of the long ids be sure to backup your save data on all of your digital titles as they will be deleted. Fortunately, you can still go back and redownload them from the eshop later (unfortunately my save files were not saved on my virtual titles, but I may have done something wrong).

FOR ANYONE DOING THIS. this still works with 11.16 (as of september 14th 2022). BUT if you already have a Nintendo DSiWare folder you have to remove the files inside of it or else your system will just crash. if you remove the files it should be good to go!

Video guides can either contain:
-Outdated exploits/software/methods which may not work at all
-Malicous methods/software that can infect your PC OR brick your console
-May skip CRITICAL things such as NAND backups
If you would like to homebrew your Wii/DSi/whatever console, you NEED to use the official guide websites.

Have been researching doing this for the past week, have consulted reddit for a lot of it and they actually tell you not to use UA-cam tutorials. This works as of 11-8-22, all that's missing is that you have to download a separate usm.bin file to put in the root directory, and you won't get a red screen error anymore.
How do u that?
Actually in the files app on chromebook you can format sd cards to fat32 that’s what I did hope this helps anyone reading this

Also Nintendo already has set guidelines for what the highest size SD can fit inside of the console, but certain Ebay sellers have shown that is not fully true(?)
it wont affect save data, you wont lose any game data
