The thing about the 3DS and Wii U is that Nintendo literally can't tell the difference between a pirated game and legit game if you play online. It's fully safe to play online with pirated games and the bans came from people playing games online before they released which was only possible via piracy, so Nintendo knew who to ban.

@@cosmicsvids you can still very easily find matches in games like Mario Kart 7 and Smash Bros and Pokémon so that's not at all true. That's very misleading to people. In any case you won't get banned for something as simple as playing a pirated game online. I even played games exclusive to other regions online back in the day and nothing happened lol. Nintendo doesn't care to issue 3DS bans anymore it seems, so people are safe.

It’s also worth mentioning that with the little green app not only can you download games, but you can also download pre existing themes that were officially made by Nintendo. Any themes you could download from the 3DS theme shop can be downloaded through the green app. The only drawback is that theyre installed to your custom 3DS theme app and not shown in the official 3DS theme library. But what makes up for it is that any region locked official themes can be downloaded to your current version of your 3DS. As in themes you could only obtain on European & Asian 3DS’S can be obtained on American 3DS’S and vice versa.
This Video sent me straight into a rabbit hole... I never thought I could be able to do stuff like this but it was so easy and fun. Now I´m trying to stop myself on repairing old broken consoles after watching a few videos on that topic xD thank you for the inspiration! I enjoy the calm and friendly vibes you radiate on your channel
The green app is a necessity, if you forgot to update a game, or you buy a new game cart, or for basically any reason have a not-fully-updated game, you may be stuck on that version officially. Thankfully, our friendly green app includes the latest updates for basically every game (as far as I can tell). I would consider this the most unambiguously good feature, since it's just free updates anyways and it applies to basically every game.
@@3kojimbles895it’s called the h shop, i’d personally only use it for downloading updates for games you own because the eshop is broken on region switched models, but you do you
with prices skyrocketing on 3ds games, I think modding might be the right way for me to go. There's just alot of 3ds games I havent played yet, and I don't want to spend unnecessary money just to get it. I'm definitely saving this for later!
It's always a good day when you post! The camera shots, color grading and quality of everything is on point. The background music at the start was also exhilarating by the way.
For anyone reading this, it should be noted that a lot of the 3DS modding community actually recommends a 128 GB microSD card, rather than 256 GB. This is because the 3DS scans the entire card when loading content and on boot, and this can increase load times -- making 128 GB the sweet spot of storage space vs. load times.
Thanks so much! I was terrified to try this, but I wanted to get some more use out of my old 3DS XL. Everything went very smoothly, and now I have a cool Breath of the Wild theme!
that green little icon is called hShop, its basically Your number one spot(personally) For Downloading Games, Themes, Updates, And Some ports too. Its basically Downloading Roms on to your 3ds/2ds Without a computer, Really Good For Homebrewing
I am very happy there’s a high quality video pulling together all this general and obscure information that I’ve had to learn from trial and error in the past 5 years, because the more people exposed to the hacking scene the better. Well done
For people who are sad they didnt hack it in time: you can still do it, idk why people act like you cant when eshop ends, but, it will always be available, i did mine when eshop closed so...
Finally! I’m so tired of all these vids of people buying every 3DS game possible before eshop closes. Not only it’s precisely what Nintendo wants you to do but also a waste of money. They’re willingly preventing you from getting these games legally (it’s not like they’re getting money from second-hand catridge sales either) so in my book there’s no harm in just doing this now. Plus modding allows for a lot of other cool stuff, like modding your games or playing fantranslations of never localized games.
People buying all those games actually makes sense for video game preservation purposes. Having one place document the games, their sizes, prices and donating all of it to a preservation service legally prevents Nintendo from trying anything funny. Anyone remember Emuparadise?

I modded my 3DS back in February... Glad to see a great tutorial/guide Thanks so much Jeff. Highly reccommend modding your system as well. I was just wondering if you could do a video on a full 3ds shell swap (I would benefit greatly). Thanks for the great video tho!!!
I bought a 2Ds last year because I wanted one for so long and 3Ds wasn't something I could get easily so the 2Ds was a win. It would cost me 30€ to mod my 2Ds with just 10 games so I searched for a tutorial and spent a whole day modding it. It was so tiring and exhausting. But I was so happy when I was done. It's fully customized and I love it
12:16 this is exactly what I did! Got a pretty nice deal from an older guy who thought it had less value bc it was in japanese and had no clue modding could change the language.
I am so grateful for this guide! So straightforward and convenient and very informative! I modded my new 3ds xl yesterday thanks for making such a great video!
You have no idea how happy I am to see someone talk even a little about the super injector. Most videos either skim it or just talk about retroarch or twilight menu
I bought an old 3DS (it was cheaper) a while ago to mod because of the really great library. The exclusive 3DS games are really fantastic and the DS games are great too, games like The World Ends With You despite getting remakes on switch, just feel so much better to play with that stylus and dual screen setup.
@@BoredomStudios all though emulators work, they dont have the same feeling as sitting on your bed, couch, in the park, at a cafe or on a bus looking at a set of 2 small screens playing with a stylus. i mean you would rather have an actual phone than a phone emulator running on a laptop in your bag right?

I modified mine a year ago in prep for this. But now I gotta do my gfs. The eshop going down is what finally convinced her. Thanks for this! It was hell to do it the first time, and this cleared up a few questions I had.
Did my old one last week to practice before my precious galaxy. Want hubs to let me do his too, maybe also let me pop his rear open to fix the cartridge spring. First time I've done something like this, don't think rng manipulation counts. I've felt this surge of powah and I need more. I am become God.
I recently got my hands on another 3DS, specifically a New 3DS XL. Great little console. Earlier this year when Loopy released his new capture boards, I snapped one of those up and now I've sent off my 3DS. Can't wait to get it back and mod it. Sadly the capture card that is getting installed does not include the USB-C charging mod that the newer revision has an option for, but being able to record on a New 3DS XL is gonna be great.
as somebody very bad with computer tech stuff, i found the instructions very easy and straight forward, just finished and didnt run into a single error, worked very smoothly as long as you follow every step as its meant to be followed
This video was so helpful! I recently modded my 3DS a week ago since the eshop closed and I couldn't find that one game I picked up my 3DS again for anywhere, not even online. It was the best decision I've ever made and I've been playing on my 3DS nonstop for the past week as if its 2013 😂 But I've been searching for some kind of guide on modding, not one that shows me how to do it but just whats out there. There is so much cfw for the 3DS that I didn't know how to use what I had or what my 3DS was even capable of. Now that I've found this video I'm even more excited to use my 3DS!
this is one of the best and most informative videos on console modding i have ever watched, and there is not one console i own that is on factory firmware. amazing video man, learnt new things myself!
This is such a great video! I modded my old 3ds XL years ago and mainly use it for Virtual Console games. I had no idea how many great pieces of homebrew software there are now for the system. I've been waiting to mod my New 3ds XL until Nintendo stopped support and this video is definitely pushing me to do so! All I need to do is pick up a big microSD.
Same here, my old 3ds XL was turned off since 2017 and today I decide to give him a new chance, and I stopped with this video, I didn’t know this existed until today.
Back when the eshop was not dead, I had an SD card solely chosen to be the one to run Virtual Console games, turning my 3DS into an emulation machine, while I had other games on a different SD card
I have never seen this channel on youtube, i have also never watched a video about modding a console. got recommended to this video and i have to say i really enjoyed watching and the energy jeff puts out !
I was terrified to mod my 3ds XL because they are now almost impossible to replace but I did it 3 days ago and its been the best decision I've made its been so much fun. I
Honestly, the only issue with a Japanese 3ds is that region swapping locks you out of the eshop (at least with the "new" models, the original 3ds doesn't have as much of an issue I don't think), which might not sound important as it's shut down, but you lose access to certain apps like Pokebank so you can't transfer over your old Pokémon to Nintendo's servers. Considering Dexit and all that, you may not even care all that much, but it's just something to be aware of because unless you have a second, same region and model, 3ds which you can do some funky transfer stuff to get access to the eshop region you want, you lose access to certain features.
what all do you lose out on with being locked from the eshop now that it’s closed? i never had a 3DS so i can’t get pokémon bank now and mostly just want to play pokémon games. are there any major things i’ll lose access to if i go the japanese model route? like can i still use the GTS in the 3DS pokémon games and update my games or system if needed?
@@justcus don’t know if you can update games still or not as I use hShop. From what I can tell, anything that does not directly connect to the e shop works fine, like system updates, online play, etc. but if you have to directly connect to the e shop, like with poke bank, you will get an error.

Nice video as always! You do a great job of showcasing what's possible with these modded consoles. I set up CFW on my 3DS last year to keep me busy while I was waiting for my Steam Deck to ship out 😂 just like you mentioned in the video, the exploits change all the time. The one I used at the time had you generate a hacked save file for Pokemon Picross to start the CFW installation. It's kinda funny how they keep finding new exploit paths.
yeah its crazy how people who want to install cfw on devices find new exploits i heared the nintendo wii got exploited with some tweasers and thats how they got into the nand fuckers are relentless
2:09 It's not usually recommended to go above 128GB for your sd cards. I have one in mine, and themes just wouldn't work right. it would always revert back to the default white. No custom themes worked, and even official ones only worked after opening and closing some form of software. I'm not sure if there's a way to fix this, but I've heard of this as a pretty common issue. I formatted the card as a 128GB partition, and it works perfectly again. Let's be honest, you're not going to fill up all that space any time soon anyway.

@@MrDjesposito it depends on what method you use. Seedminer doesn't need the camera at all(my sister successfully used this method on a old 3ds with the same issue) and skaterhax will use it to scan qr codes but there is probably an alternative way.
The process moving from 1 sd card to another doesn’t suck, it’s actually really easy. Just format your new sd card to fat32 and then drag and drop all sd card content from the original to the new one. That’s about it 😂
Thank you, was doing this modding process on my original 4gb cuz my 64gb didn’t have the files… now that I know how to put the stuff on 4 to the 64 is relieving
Now formatting in fat 32 on a Windows system with a big card is a bit of a hassle as you have to use a third party application to do it but it is doable.
I know I’m a bit late but for me and future people that will come to watch this can you keep us updated! I subscribe in hope to get news on the 3Ds. I bought my games so I don’t want to mod my 3Ds plus recently there was a weird update which turns out some people got there homebrew 3Ds bricked. I want to mod my 3Ds at the very end of it life once everything gets shut down I hope you can make one last video of how to mod it before everything on it shuts down.
The first time i modded my 3ds i searched endlessly for a way to play GBA on in. Everyone in the modding community was like "no thats impossible. The 3DS will never play GBA games." So yeah the modding community changes because it only takes one person to be like. " Well, if no one else will do it, I'll do it myself"
Thank you for this!! I love my N3DS even more now after installing cfw. It’s such an amazing handheld, it goes everywhere with me. Currently playing through all of the fan made Pokémon games and having such a blast. I’m a sucker for the customization of the 3ds and love Anemone so much, so many amazing themes. Keep up the amazing content Jeff, always look forward to your uploads😊
I was too at first but i finally said fuck it and modded it some days ago. The guide is very easy to follow and provides screenshots. My 3ds XL has been collecting dust for years but now it's reborn :D
A little fact. Some Japanese consoles has LCD screens instead of TN panels that have the American or European version of it. And looks so different, it's a really good upgrade. If someone wants to buy new one it's my recommendation
Good video and got me to mod my 3ds, one issue I have is you recommended a 256GB sd card which is not preferred. After I got everything working I realized theme's didn't work because of the sd card being over 128gb, which is the apparent preferred size. Also anything over 128 makes loading up the 3ds a lot slower
I’ve been a 3DS ambassador since 2011, it’s a shame that Nintendo has discontinued online support for this system. So I’m a bit late to the party but I followed the guide you linked and upgraded my stock 4GB microSD to a 128GB micro SD. I got all the custom firmware and apps installed and that “unmentioned” app you referenced which is now a new version. My 3DS XL is now hacked and I was able to access virtual console content. I can’t wait to dive in to all the other stuff that comes with a modded 3DS. I now have so much more stuff to do with my system! It’s all very exciting. With Nintendo no longer supporting the 3DS I can’t imagine they’ll be cracking down on users with modded hardware. Thank you very much for the video!
It used to be really stagnant, with the only options being Mocha, which was free, but required you to web exploit the system each boot (and didn't always work), or Haxchi, which required a legitimate game, and if cold-booted to, couldn't be deleted off the system, or it would lock up the loader (and brick your system in the process). When eShop's closure was announced, it spurred searches for something better, and now there's the Environment Loader, and Tiramisu, which is like a cold-boot Haxchi, but to a title that _cannot_ be deleted from the system (good ol' Health & Safety), and is on every system. A new environment called Aroma even allows for NTR CFW-like plugins loaded from a Rosalina-like menu. Exploit and installation is even easier than for 3DS, with just a couple steps.
Great Video! Tbh, im just really scared of getting banned, and im definitely not intending on doing… Aside from that, this sounds quite fun! This video also is just comforting for some reason, just so cool to see all of this from a 3DS, A. 3. D. S. Its truly crazy
You most likely won’t get banned now that the eshop is closed. Also players have gotten banned by nintendo because they noticed the players were playing games before release which means it was pirated. That’s why they got banned. Nintendo actually doesn’t notice the difference between a pirated game and a real game when online. (If game has already been released)

2:06 - I learned to homebrew in a single day and changed to a larger card not thinking that I'd need the extra space. It was actually pretty easy to simply copy over files from one card to another on a computer. Had to find a workaround to formatting to a FAT32 64gb cluster size on the new card though. Keeping my old card as a backup I guess. Tried to boot the console without my SD card to test it out and I didn't know what to do from the homebrew menu lol.
fun fact dkoldies is now under the bus and a law firm is looking to make a class action lawsuit against them for the lying of the refurbished consoles part lol
@NotN I'm just wondering why a random comment about DK oldies is doing on a totally unrelated video. I honestly don't care about their shady practices and yes selling un-refurbished consoles is a dick move but this is why emulation exists I'm not paying for games or hardware I owned over 20 years ago.
@DammitJeff Thanks for making this video! I would have probably never modded my DS! I was so hesitant because of all the memories I had on it. But the process was totally worth it. ❤
I'd go for a 128gb SD Card instead. Only because not only is even at that size the loading becomes pretty atrocious, but also because at least from what I've heard (grain of salt I guess) Anything above 128gb can make a 3DS greatly unstable.

Been considering modding my 3DS for a while now and finally took the plunge after seeing this, love it! Great video!
I bought an old 3DS (it was cheaper) a while ago to mod because of the really great library. The exclusive 3DS games are really fantastic and the DS games are great too, games like The World Ends With You despite getting remakes on switch, just feel so much better to play with that stylus and dual screen setup.
How much u buy it for
Just emulate the games on pc
Buying a 3ds just to mod is a waste of money rather than just emulating the games on pc

Did you need to use torrents and transfer files from PC to 3ds?

Just did it with my New 3DS XL and it's a breath of new life to a console that I wasn't playing for ages, thanks!!
This video was so helpful! I recently modded my 3DS a week ago since the eshop closed and I couldn't find that one game I picked up my 3DS again for anywhere, not even online. It was the best decision I've ever made and I've been playing on my 3DS nonstop for the past week as if its 2013 😂
But I've been searching for some kind of guide on modding, not one that shows me how to do it but just whats out there. There is so much cfw for the 3DS that I didn't know how to use what I had or what my 3DS was even capable of. Now that I've found this video I'm even more excited to use my 3DS!
Glad you’re having fun 😁 the 3DS modding community is LARGE and goes WAY past just “play gba roms on ur 3DS” haha

This is such a great video! I modded my old 3ds XL years ago and mainly use it for Virtual Console games. I had no idea how many great pieces of homebrew software there are now for the system.

I did mine with Pokemon Picross and my friend's with a DSi app Settings exploit. Forgot what that one was called.

It's not usually recommended to go above 128GB for your sd cards.
Pretty sure that issue only happens when you fiddle with the settings while reformatting, I kept it at the default format settings and it worked fine.
@@sm3dwplessie765I have this issue and I’m not sure what format I need to put to default, could you explain? Hate that I have to reinstall my themes on my 3ds 😅

The process moving from 1 sd card to another doesn’t suck, it’s actually really easy. Just format your new sd card to fat32 and then drag and drop all sd card content from the original to the new one.

So yeah the modding community changes because it only takes one person to be like. " Well, if no one else will do it, I'll do it myself"

Also anything over 128 makes loading up the 3ds a lot slower
as someone who does a lot of PC mod making, watching this in awe at how genius people have really managed to make a whole community around this
I’ve been a 3DS ambassador since 2011, it’s a shame that Nintendo has discontinued online support for this system.
Given that the wii u is in a similar situation to the 3ds, would you be keen on breaking down the homebrew scene on there?
Tbh, im just really scared of getting banned, and im definitely not intending on doing…
Aside from that, this sounds quite fun!

I'd go for a 128gb SD Card instead.
