Man, the Florence + the Machine album is so great, first time listening to one of their albums, makes me want to go back and listen to the discography 😊
I’m a longtime Florence fan and Dance Fever is the only album where I adore every individual song and can listen to the whole thing from start to finish without skips. The concept, lyrics, production and vocal performance in this are perfection.
@@joshsimonek13 HBHBHB and Dance Fever are definitely her more rock albums. My main issue with HB is that tracks 1 to 4 are so huge and amazing that the 2nd half of the album feels slow compared to them.
I'm glad to see both praise for Gospel and Everything Everything. I liked Gospel's debut quite a bit but even i was surprised at how much i ended up really enjoying The Loser. Easily one of the best comeback albums in recent memory. And as for Everything Everything, they are one of my favourite bands and even if the lead up singles for the album weren't their best material and i was slightly worried the album would turn out way too accessible and mainstream for their standards, Raw Data Feel managed to win me over and after giving it some time, i would say it's their second best album behind Get to Heaven. I especially can't get enough of My Computer right now. Such a goddamn tune.
Thanks for the video and yeah, lots of interesting albums here(and Harry Styles) my opinion on which is: Maybe not the best place to start with Sharon Van Etten's catalogue, but I thought it was fine, weak production tho. Gospel album is fantastic in different ways than their first album. Both would've been on my top albums list. Raw Data Feel after more listens might be my favourite EE album, I absolutely love it and glad you enjoyed it too. I need more relistens of Quelle's record to solidify my opinion. Dance Fever is my favourite Florence album. Period. Some production moments aside. Ain't it funny how 4 good to amazing albums sandwiched in between 2 just ok ones? Yeah, I thought Harry's House was just alright and outside of Daydreaming, Matilda and As It Was, didn't had much to grab me.
Not gonna lie, it's cathartic hearing you validate the position I've held on Harry's solo carrier for a long time. As inconsistent as his debut was, the potential was there to go in a heavier hard rock direction in the follow up, and I'll sing the praises of songs like kiwi, two ghosts, and ever since new york to this day. And hell, you could argue that with the success of mgks pop punk pivot, he was primed to become a real modern rock star. So imagine my dismay when fine line basically polished away all of the texture that made his debut distinctive to begin with. And as for this new record, I gave up after the third song. That's how thoroughly not for me harry's house is, which is fine. I've made peace with that. I'm genuinely happy for people who seem to be enjoying it. I just think it's tragic that we'll likely never get a song like kiwi ever again from him.
Thank you Mark. I was beginning to feel like I was living in a Twilight Zone episode based on The Emperor's New Clothes where Harry Styles is concerned. None of it is bad per se but most of the time I feel like the over the top praise is just that. Over the top. His music is just okay and his love of using three or four words repeated over and over and calling it a chorus bores me to tears. I know his flash and charisma is irresistible to the masses but the lack of substance leaves me always feeling like the little kid yelling "HE DOESN"T HAVE ANYTHING ON" and no else can see it. It's frustrating because I always want it to be better than it is. Maybe next time.
I might be ready to call Raw Data Feel EE's best album to date (once I've heard Man Alive and Arc). GREAT hooks, some of their best songs in a while, plus Jonathan Higgs's vocals are a little dialed back so they're easier on the ears. Which helps some of the AI-generated lyrics become a lot of fun. If anything, it's probably their most accessible album to date. Florence + The Machine knocked it out of the park with Dance Fever; between it and Lungs (and possibly High As Hope if I give that one more listens), I don't know which album I like more. And 'Choreomania' is one of my favourite songs of the year. I don't know how I feel about Harry's House. Right now, I KNOW it's weaker than the s/t, but I don't know if I like it more or less than Fine Line. 'As It Was' is still my favourite hit song of the year, yet nothing on the album comes even *close* to its quality. I'll have to come back to this one. You've convinced me to try out the new Gospel, though. And I really need to get on the Quelle Chris train.
I've listened to all of these albums except the Gospel one. I'll have to rectify that. Raw Data Feel definitely grew on me after a couple listens. Don't think it's as good as Get To Heaven, but I still really like it overall. Still kinda struggling with my feelings on DEATHFAME, even after several listens. Definitely another good one from Chris, but I don't know if I'd put on par with something like Guns or Everything's Fine. Still, The Sky Is Blue Because The Sunset Is Red is an absolutely fantastic track, one of my favorites of the year so far.
Harry's House is a great album because it, Doesn't care what others think of it. It's not trying to appease the male critics chained to the altar of classic rock, and it isn't showering you in glitter and hauling you into the dance floor (even though you are still cordially invited). Harry's House is open; whether you choose to come in is up to you. Every track seems cozy and personal in a way that is much different to what he has put out in the past. So yes, he's coming for the GRAMMYS.
I thought your take on the Sharon album was fair. I really enjoyed her last album and Seventeen is such a bop, but this felt weirdly cold and unfocused for her, and yes, the production suffocates her voice far too much. Everything Everything... I only made it through the first few songs, it just didn't do a whole lot for me. Maybe I'll give it another chance, but I'd rather just focus on listening to other albums. Yep, Quelle Chris did it again. Not better than BYIG, Everything's Fine, and Guns (probably my favorite thing he's done), but I mostly dug the more introspective and low-key direction he took here. I personally thought it was better than Innocent Country 2 though, it just felt more consistent and the looser theme made it easier to enjoy. Florence + The Machine may have put out their best album in my opinion. First off, props to Jack Antonoff for making his best-sounding album since NFR (at least to me), but more importantly, Florence's songwriting and performances are on another level here. I've generally liked her, but this blew me away more than I expected. Also kinda shocked to not see "Dream Girl Evil" in the best tracks, easily one of my favorite songs of the year. Man, that Harry Styles is the definition of bland. I loved "Music For A Sushi Restaurant" though, even if it feels like a Silk Sonic rip-off. Finally, will check out that Gospel album sometime, since I'm trying to get into more screamo. EDIT: That Gospel is some pretty impressive, prog-infused post-hardcore! Also, I finally listened to Raw Data Feel in its entirety, I’m genuinely in awe of this album! Great concept and a real high point for pop rock this year.
i absolutely adore free and little freak, and though i refuse to listen to harry's house all the way through, dance fever is a wonderful album that i like very much.
I know he’s saying Florence is too heavily influenced in her records, but I disagree. I certainly don’t agree with the Fiona Apple and Lingua Ignota comparisons. Lyrically Lingua draws from a similar sphere (Christianity, occult, spiritual) but that’s not enough to be considered Florence influenced, especially without knowing why either artist draws on those themes for use in their writing. The only similarities I hear in Fiona is in the percussive sound, but once again, no artist holds license over that. I think the point about production is fair though.
Harry's House is a great album because it, Doesn't care what others think of it. Nobody is lying though. Everybody’s been honest about how THEY FEEL about it. Music is subjective. Some people like it, some like this guy doesn’t like it. Making weird statements like yours is not only outright not true, it’s just cringe.
@@TheGeorgeD13 Your mind seems to be confused coz you are in the wrong place. But you are doing your job well as a hater 👏🏾 BUT DON'T BE INSULTING ABOUT IT🤷🏾♀️
Idk about the "Florence Influences" comment tho, Fiona Apple, yes I think so, but Florence was doing the "Lingua Ignota-ish" stuff 15 years ago. So doesn't seem fair. She's more referencing herself (from lungs) more than anything. I can see Nick cave influence too but that started more in 2015 I think.
Oh come on Mark. There were some very memorable/beloved songs from the post-disco era. Another One Bites the Dust. Another Brick in the Wall. Don’t Stop Believin/Any Way You Want It. Back in Black/You Shook Me All Night Long. Under Pressure. In the Air Tonight. Crazy Train. Jessie’s Girl. Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Let’s Groove. 9 to 5. Celebration. Waiting For a Girl Like You/Juke Box Hero. Call Me. Bette Davis Eyes. Should I Stay or Should I Go. Whip It. Cars. You Make My Dreams Come True. Even Funkytown is still remembered. And those weren’t underground; they were all top 40 hits (except Ozzy and The Clash, who were still very well known). I’m well aware that the average song sounded a lot more like Air Supply or Ambrosia than Queen or Pink Floyd, but still, there was definitely good material for Harry Styles to pull from. As for the Harry album itself, it’s okay. Nothing was better than As it Was, and the first song in particular was annoying.
To be fair, from what I can tell, he has a lot of contempt for '80s pop music and probably finds a lot more of it to be bad or poorly-aged than we give it credit. I think this is one reason he tends to be a bit kinder to modern-day "throwback" hits that update ideas that had potential for the current era compared to some critics I know who are thoroughly sick of it.
Harry Styles is the most undeserving star of all time. I’m not gonna argue with anyone but he has the worst solo career from one direction, tho the band was never good, and he isn’t even attracted so I don’t know how he got that audience.
Liam is probably the one with the worst solo career. His debut album which got almost no traction has made a few lists of the worst albums if all time.
