Hi! Very nice reaction. Cassandra comes from Greek mythology. She was cursed by Apollo to predict the future but her prophecy would never be believed in or listened to. That is why Florence sings I used to tell the future, but they cut out my tongue etc.

I woke up today and listened to this whole album. I drove up to see my mother and grandmother. Three generations of women. Tomorrow I march to the Supreme Court in DC, in order to protest the overturning of Roe v Wade. This song came at the perfect time for me. It explains the inherent existential crisis in embodying feminity.
Btw Cassandra is a prophet in Greek mythology. She was cursed by Apollo to be blind, and have all her prophecies be correct but never believed. He did this because she rejected his advances.
edit: I looooove the way you sing My Love , you should release a cover!!!! ❤

Girls Against God really struck a cord with me, the feeling of nostalgia mixed with grief and being angry that you can never relive those treasured experiences was a cycle I was trapped in myself for a while. Even if its only part of the song, its feels great knowing that's a shared emotion that others experience as well.

Loved your reaction. I believe this is her most complete work in the sense of showing off how her universe as an artist works. Her lyricism is married to the production in a way that's only hers. Dance Fever feels like a synthesis of all her previous work. As if she took everything that she made so far and kept just the core. Great work of art.

I read an interview about this album, she said she recorded the first 3 songs in America just before the pandemic kicked in, and when it all started to ramp up she went back to England and straight into lockdown, at which point the writer's block and isolation set in. So yeah, Back in Town really is an interval of sorts, and the tone shifts really dramatically from the theme of hysteria/choreomania, to introspective and somewhat angry.
This album hit me so hard when it came out, really captured something. I was also gifted her poetry book, and I think her inclination towards poetry is really embraced by the spoken word sections of the album.

Loved your reaction! Very thoughtful and genuine. Also, the german word for 'daffodil' is 'Narzisse' which made me think of Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection. I really liked your interpretation of the line "I saw the future in the face of a daffodil", but I think it could also mean "I saw the future in myself."

To me, understanding Prayer Factory requires context. Florence started recording this album a month before lockdown started. So the song feels like she’s damning God for interrupting her work when she was on an uphill climb

Cassandra in Greek mythology is someone who is cursed to have true visions of the future that no one will believe.

In an interview this past week Florence said King is about her ego as it relates to her art, and how it conflicts with the other paths she could take in life if she didn't have this need to perform.
My own interpretation prior to seeing the interview had more to do with empowerment and the rejection/cutting away of traditional gender roles in favor of being true to the inner self.
If the video for Free is any indication of the meaning... I know as someone that struggles with anxiety and depression sometimes you long for those moments when you can escape the mental illness and just dance and be in the moment because that's really the only time you feel free.
Daffodil strikes me as an incredibly witchy song in the most ancient sense; Persephone returning from the underworld, Demeter waking the world to spring, Kore walking the world. Rebirth and renewal are not necessarily light processes, they can be very heavy and intense.

When she started recording this record (march 2020) she had 3 months booked at electric lady in nyc. After one week and four songs she had to fly home and abandon the project. I think that's what Cassandra is about, not being able to get the music out and being left with the nothing.

Yes, absolutely, Dan. Just re-listened to the album and your thoughtfulness here really highlights the power of this album--especially your explanations at the end. You're right, it's more than just a hook and a "satisfying drop or crescendo" etc. After seeing a lot of people's interactions/reviews of this album, I'm glad I'm returning back to your video as my last F+TM reaction for Dance Fever. You truly took the time to interact with the record and understand where it's coming from which unfortunately, a lot of other people missed. Different likes/dislikes are inherently okay, but it's a little bit frustrating when people are only thinking of what a "good" album should be based on familiarity of sound and song construction. Some of the best songs I've ever listened to are the one's that took multiple listens to connect with (especially, I've noticed, right after I genre switch my music listening!) but that's mostly due to factoring expectation and familiarity. Don't know if I'm spewing nonsense (sorry!) but anyway, had to leave a comment for one of the most in-depth and thoughtful music reactors/reviewers I know. Cheers to you & hope you're well!

I thoroughly enjoyed your interpretation, thank you. And I thoroughly enjoyed the album. I think it's interesting that the first song of the album is King, and the last song is Morning Elvis, where she is singing about/comparing herself to Elvis who is considered to be the King of Rock & Roll. In her interview with Apple music, she discusses this concept of King of Rock/King of Pop and says something along the lines of...Why can't that be me? Why can't I be King?... These two songs encapsulate that sentiment and are the perfect bookends to the album

Loving this album! Saw a clip of Florence explaining that the album is about her relationship with music/songwriting, a sort of "be careful what you wish for" fable about pushing music away but then regretting it and feeling empty and wanting it to come back...
    My interpretation of the songs:
King: Florence contemplating how much she must sacrifice for her art, having to choose between domesticity and performance and feeling torn and anguished as she wants both but feels as though they can't coexist
Free: sort of reiterating why she loves performance so seeing the more positive side of her relationship with music... when shes in the creative spirit she is free
Choreomania: kind of following on from Free that she gets lost in the dance but with a slightly more cynical side, she is free but she is also dancing herself to death which I guess represents how exhausting touring can be even though it's so freeing for her
Back in town: I kind of think it's like her reflecting on music with a slightly cynical lens with the contrasting imagery, perhaps pushing away music here as she sees it through a darker lens?
Girls against god: Florence described it as old testament style fury at God because of lockdown, in the context of the fairytale maybe is her anger at God for taking away her gift of music? Definitely feels like a descent into madness at the end
Dream Girl Evil: pretty much like you say, her rejecting the idea that women/people in general get put into boxes of either perfect angelic dream girl or evil, and she is just a person
Prayer Factory: not sure about this one, maybe in the context of the fairytale it is meant to reflect her feeling like her work is going to waste in lockdown, or that she is being locked out of heaven because she is no longer able to perform?
Cassandra: references to greek mythology, Florence has said before about the sort of prophetic nature of her songs so might be a nod to that too, think its mainly her grieving the loss of performance and live music and inspirations etc
Heaven is here: seems to be an outburst of emotions, offering heaven but using dark metaphors (turning the sea to a desert), maybe this is the voice of music taunting her that she can have heaven if she will sacrifice other aspects of her life?
Daffodil: love your interpretation that it is about her learning to hope again and the fury at the rest of the world continuing on as normal sort of taunting her while her world (performance) has been blown apart
My Love: basically about writers block and lockdown meaning shes lost music, similar vibes to the above
Restraint: I dont know if the darker tone she is using in this one is meant to be the voice of the song but i interpret the choir at the end to be sort of music coming back into her life?
The Bomb: I might be wrong but i think the 'you' in this song is music? Shes addressing the idea that shes given up a lot of her life in order to be a successful artist and that pain is what feeds her art so it's a fairly toxic relationship... I'm sure also addressing actual relationships as well
Morning Elvis: think this one is clearly her reflecting on her past and comparing herself to Elvis and his issues with addiction, but music saved her, but I think the last line changing from saved to spared is perhaps her realising that she doesn't owe music anything and doesn't have to devote her life to music at the expense of all else... it spared her so she could live but it didnt save her (comparing music to religion)?? If that makes any sense whatsoever 😂
Sorry for the long comment just love this album and had a lot of thoughts (which probably sound very muddled and nonsensical in hindsight) 😂 but loved your reaction to it too 🥰

the last line of the bomb always gives me chills because you sort of expect the lyric to be "Sometimes you get the girl, sometimes you get the bomb" (relating to the "I don't love you I just love the bomb" and implying the bomb is sort of a different side of her brought out by the relationship) so when she says 'the song' instead, the change really causes you to think more about it, in fact to the point that I was convinced she had said this line with bomb instead of song at some point within the song. To me this line says "sometimes you get the survival of the relationship, and sometimes you get the experience of the relationship ending to write a song about"

I love your enthusiasm and appreciation for Florence's artistry, self awareness, and very British matter-of-fact indifference to HUGE emotional self-revelations or confessions. Specifically,THE BOMB... exactly right, the tune is so cheery like a picnic birthday song... Which ACTUALLY gives her the upper hand in the narration... She says, yeah ok, you admit that this could have been the best thing ever, but you didn't choose it ... Well, I'm aok with that because It was all about the ride...the explosions...the danger, the thrill.... She says SHE let it burn... She's no spurned lover at all ... She got exactly what she wanted...the drama, blowing up her life passion, fireworks (which SHE allowed to burn). So be doesn't get the girl... He gets the little cute song! it's actually such a sweet Dear John letter....or post mortem.... She sorta tells him "um, I'm not crying over this" but she's being Florence affectionate and polite and delightful instead of mean and pissed. It's like the "anti Maggie Mae".... She's not hurt and he gets a goodbye song. But what I really wanted to point out is the quality of her vocals and the control and how she really tightens her throat at the end and it becomes less open and airy and friendly and a bit more stern and firm. Like "you listening? You getting it?"

ALSO. .. you didn't comment on the beautiful line in Elvis, that after every tour she threatens to quit. But songs beg her to be born...
