Great car and great guest. I lived in the UK for 30 years, all through the 1960s and 1970s and only ever saw one Marcos. So they were a rare sight even where they were built. There was also a car called the Mini-Marcos which was based on the Mini but with a Marcos-styled body.
The guy who designed and built it was Jem Marsh and I think his partner was a guy called Costin. - Mar-Cos. Had the chance to buy the ‘barn find’ prototype back in the 70s, which had the plywood chassis but the wife said no !
Jem MARsh and Philip COStin developed the Marcos. Get it? MAR-COS. However the guest mentioned that. Jem (Jeremy) Marsh was an honorable man. Nearly 13 months into the ownership of my 1969 Marcos 3 Liter V6 (Wood) I blew a valve on the Essex (ex Ford Zodiak) V6 and even though there was no warranty because I was in the US and the Marcos was never sold there. There was no arguing. I simply wrote Jem Marsh and told what what had happened. He responded graciously with an apology and shipped me an entire new engine short block to me in Michigan and paid for it's installation as well. They don't make them like that anymore.
The also did a miniature version with Mini running gear - called the Mini Marcos (obvs.) Sadly, I'm not sure this svelte design translated quite as well as they had hoped. :-D
When Jay mentioned he checked out the prices on this beauty and his honest admiration for it, I'll give you 10 to 1 odds he's already got one in his collection.
Such a beautiful car! And a pleasure to watch Jay and Frazer together. The two of them have such good on-screen chemistry, they should present more shows together! Brilliant!
I owned a 1969 Marcos 3 Liter V6 WOOD chassis. Chassis 5435. If anyone knows where it is, I would love to find it again. That Wabasto sunroof is there because you absolutely need it to let the super-heated hot air out on hot days. Fortunately I lived in Michigan then. The windows cannot roll down all the way because the doors are so shallow that there is no room for them to fully retract. The Marcos was lower than every car I have every owned. I was 6'6" then so getting in and out was, well, entertaining for everyone involved. Passers-by were especially amused. I spoke with Jeremy Marsh at Marcos before I bought it and asked what modification(s) could be made to accommodate my height. He said, "None" and suggested I not buy it. I bought it anyway. You do not give up the opportunity to own and drive a Marcos if you have the chance. Lucky you Jay, you now do not have to buy every car that peaks your interest. They come to you now. My wood chassis Marcos was an inch lower that the steel chassis Marcos. You're almost lying down as you drive it. It was even lower than my Lotus 7 and my Lotus Super 7 (with the tops up). I would pull up next to a Corvette on the road and look up at the door handle. It drew more positive attention than anything I have ever owned, and that includes a Ferrari 275GTB and a Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider. Driving it was a hoot. When I owned mine there were only three in the USA. One of the other two was owned by Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen, who was President of Ford Motor Company until Henry Ford II fired him. Another one was owned by Edwin Starr, of Motown Records, singer of "War". Edwin and I became friends because of the Marcos. Never met "Bunkie". Great show Jay. The cars. And you. I am sure you've heard this hundred of times over the years from car nuts like us: You're living our dream. I am living mine in Italy now.
A few more notes. The chassis was very high quality marine plywood, The Wabasto sunroof was on very car to let the heat out. The windows only go half way down because the door is so shallow it cannot go down any further. I have a color brochure. Chrome yellow was indeed a one of their colors. In 1969 in addition to the 3 liter essex V6 (a 2.6 version was available in the Ford Capri) there was a two liter V4 the same as SAAB used after switching from their more entertaining 3 cylinder two stroke. You’re right about the difference between true sport cars of that era vs what we used to call spectator sports cars … like Mercedes Benz 230-250-280 SL from time. Pretty. Two seats. Weight as much as the sedans with the same engine. The Marcos was sold as a kit for the same reason a Lotus Super 7 was … to avoid the 14% VAT tax. I want my Marcos 28:31 back!
Pierce Brosnan is a true English gentleman, and Jay's review if the car is spot on. My favorite UA-cam!! But then I am biased as I also own a Marcos 3.0 liter V6, same color blue also. Yes they are amazing cars to drive, I've owned mine for 30 years now and would never part with it. Thanks to both of you for this great film.... A joy to watch

Even though my daughter and I are in the middle of restoring a 1970 Triumph Bonneville T 120 R (she fell in love with this basket case bike and I kinda got sucked in), I'm not a big fan of anything British. However, this car is flat out GORGEOUS! The old "Trumpet" will be too once she's finished. We're going completely stock on the bike but baby girl is having trouble deciding on the colors. The funny thing about this restoration is that some guy saw us rolling the bike around outside my shop with no engine. He stopped and offered us $1000 for the roller. My daughter told him it's not for sale since it's a daddy/daughter project. He said ok, so, how bout $600 for just the gas tank and Triumph emblems (which happen to be in mint condition), again, she said no. I wonder what his offer would've been if he'd known that we also have a N.O.S. Lucas tail light in the box on a shelf inside the shop. Doesn't matter, the answer still would've been no.
@@mescko Oh it's not our first project. Both of our daughters pretty much grew up in the shop and my wife spends a lot of time there too. Trucks, hot rods, tractors and now, a Triumph Bonneville are all family projects.

I was married to a wonderful British lady for over 20 years and I actually saw one of these at a boot sale in Wales. It was gorgeous and I had never heard of this company at all. Thanks for making it available to see and learn about.
Fraser is a quintessential English gentleman. I was a regular subscriber to Autocar magazine in the early seventies, there were a few other English "kit car makers of sports cars such as Gilbern Genie and Ginetta, based in Wales. Ogle, and TVR were others, plus of course the Lotus seven, By the way the sunglasses he is wearing are Persol as worn by James Bond in Spectre.
NJF no, you're correct - I think the producers were quite upset when Craig was photographed hanging around between takes wearing his own Persols when Tom Ford was endorsing the franchise.

@@RichardCowdrey that was an amazing description of the gentleman, I was hoping someone would comment this!
very affected and conscious mannersims from this ageing guy with a british accent
Your camera man is really stepping up his game. Nice work.
It's my brother😊 thank you sir!!

Great car and great guest. I lived in the UK for 30 years, all through the 1960s and 1970s and only ever saw one Marcos. So they were a rare sight even where they were built. There was also a car called the Mini-Marcos which was based on the Mini but with a Marcos-styled body.
"Where did the name Marcos come from?"
"Well, it's a portmanteau...". Now there's a word you don't hear often, particularly so beautifully enunciated.
They should have spent more time on that amazing dash and instrument cluster. I loved what little I saw.
Do you expect me to die Mr Bond? No I expect you to drive
Yeah he'd be a good 007 James bond.
"Do you expect me to die? No, Mr. Bond I expect you to drive"
corrected it for you.
Taillights are from a Vauxhaull. True like Marcos the Elan did use them, but they were made by Lucas for the Vauxhall Victor.
Were they not on the viva also ?
The early HA models had them i'm fairly sure.
I think everyone will be happier if we agree that the Victor had taillights from an Elan...
Definitely lucas
@@ExMachinaEngineering lol
I read "Lucas" and the power went out...
Man, that is a beautiful car. Never saw one before today
Its gorgeous.
This is one of my favourite episodes. Always loved these cars
Douglas. Frazer Douglas.
Shaken, not stirred.
Keep Calm and Marcos On!
Great comment. LOL
That made me laugh..thanks
Homeboy has a REAL posh accent. Pure Chipping Norton.
What a great comment, I enjoyed reading that - keep living the dream in Italia!! 👍🏽
This guy is like an American’s stereotype of any British guy to the T. Love the car though. It’s beautiful, unusual and sounds like a pop can with a stone in it, but it just draws you right in.
He looks, dresses, and sounds like a hoity-toity auctioneer from Sotheby’s. The kind that doesn’t rattle off numbers like a cattle auction, but instead clearly and meticulously states every number
CorbynBorbyn In the early 1980s I was living in London, and there's one parked in my neighbourhood often, not in the best condition though. Sometimes I wonder what happened to it.
Yes..
maybe an actor?
I love Jay's point about anyone can make an expensive car. Not made to a price, but made cleverly for the price.
Such a beautiful body style.. I immediately thought of the Shelby Daytona...!! Thanks Jay and Frazer..!!
They ran this type of Marcos at Le Mans during the 1960's. Later the more modified Mantula V8 even quite recently...
Made me think of the Ferrari 250 GTO.
Talking about Jackie Stewart, editor shows of pictures of Stirling Moss 😂
Not many people noticed that, it seems.
I was thinking that Jackie had aged horribly!
I should have noticed that, but I did not. Thank you for mentioning it!
The funny thing is, I once heard Jay describe Sterling the same way he was describing Jackie Stewart. I guess Jay was just so excited driving this car he got mixed up.
I know, right. I'm like Jackie isn't bald!
Once again Jay shows us an obscure car that deserves some attention, and as always shares the stage with the owner. I always feel as if I've just come from school after watching one of Jays videos.
Really enjoyed watching this very pleasant meeting of two car enthusiasts.
Jay travels in time and meets The Saint, circa 1965.
or even the 'return of the saint'.
Funny thing is, a Marcos GT 1.8 was Featured in One of the Episodes, "The World Beater" , in 1969.
This man definitely has hidden gadgets built into this car. Careful which buttons you push or MI6 will get a distress signal.
Hi Jay,
I live in Sydney Australia and own a 1970 Marcos Gt, it would have been good to see you get out of the Marcos as it’s harder to get out than in, fantastic to see you driving it !! Love your Chanel,,,,

A great example of design being something emotional... such a great car
That guy looks like the type of person who auctions high end paintings for Bonhams, before scooting off to Chamonix in his Marcos for a vacation of skiing and snogging Swiss teens.
Bang on the mark
Comes across as a bit of a Sloanie but also as a sincere and nice guy
I love chamonix aha need to go back
He's like an Antiques Roadshow furniture expert.
I doubt he goes for teens, even the Swiss variety. He's going to want a woman, not a girl. Someone who knows her way around.
I've never heard of this car. Looks and sounds AMAZING!!!
If there was ever an opportunity for Jay to do his "Ahhhh Mr Bond" routine...
LIKE HE DOESN'T DO IT ENOUGH. AT LEAST THERE WAS NO REFERENCE TO LINCOLN WEARING A TOP HAT IN THIS ONE OR RENTING OUT THE TRUNK TO A FAMILY OF FOUR.
"Proper Englishman" Jay nailed that one.
How fun, a Father-Daughter project! Well done!
@@mescko Oh it's not our first project. Both of our daughters pretty much grew up in the shop and my wife spends a lot of time there too. Trucks, hot rods, tractors and now, a Triumph Bonneville are all family projects.
Such a beautiful vehicle, Frazer is a great custodian...
When the video started playing, I thought this was gonna be a $250000+ machine.. But they definitely seem to be a bargain for $50k!
Wouldn't say it's beautiful but wouldn't say it ugly either. It's a strange hodge-podge of other vehicles put together. It's a great find though. Thanks Jay for sharing. I had never heard of the vehicle before.
@@wayned1807 This is the first time I too have heard of / seen this.. I agree with you about this being a hodge podge of a couple of vehicles put together.. I kinda see a hint of the styling of the Jag E Type upfront, abit of the Ferrari Breadvan/Shelby Daytona Coupe in the rear.. And all of those r gorgeous machines.. And for the price I feel this is worth it.. But I wonder how the reliability part is
This guy is going to get dozens of calls from casting agencies in LA! He's so smooth!
probably a good enough reason to get yourself on the show.
That`s a beautiful and great sounding little car. I have never heard of one. What a gem.
Hell of a growl for a 3L V6. Beautiful car. From the rear, reminds me of an ISO Grifo.
Except for the nose, I thought the Marcos looked like the Iso Grifo/Bizzarrini in the side view. I think the Grifo is a good bit larger though.
A very interesting, unique sound to be sure.
I know, I got a surprise to hear it was a Ford V6, with that note I was expecting something a little more exotic. I remember when I was younger seeing a V6 Capri that used this same engine around where I lived and that was a very quick car. they were more popular here in Australia because the 4 cylinders tended to be underpowered.
@@catey62 The Capri usually used a 2.6 version of the same V6, which was also used in the Ford Zodiac sedan,
No the 2.6 was a Cologne engine this is a British Essex 3,0 V6@@citronr1
Holy Cow the owner of a mechanic shop right round my corner has one in british racing green. I was very young when I did my internship there but I sat in one. Never heard of a marcos back then and didn't knew what to make of the brand but I just had to sit in it. Thanks for bringing back those memories Jay!
Nice little car on a tight budget! Love the knowledge that Frazer and Jay shared about the history and specs of the car.
Thanks for sharing this car and thanks be to the owner for letting Mr. Leno share this wish us. This car has personality and style, just like its owner.
Thank you, Jay, you're so good at bringing smiles to the faces of automobile lovers
What an amazing car. Love watching all these classic and rare car videos.
In 1978 I got a test ride in an identical blue Marcos with the Volvo engine and wood chassis. The owner did frame up restorations of Mini Coopers in CT which I went to see. The Marcos was gorgeous in and out. Drove well too. Kept my 74 Lotus Europa, but it was a memorable day.
Great video. Love it when you do stories on these unique, seldom seen rolling works of mechanical art.
I think the sunglasses worn in Spectre are made by Tom Ford... I apologize if I am wrong.
NJF no, you're correct - I think the producers were quite upset when Craig was photographed hanging around between takes wearing his own Persols when Tom Ford was endorsing the franchise.
Thanks...I thought so. I have the same pair of TFs. Not taking anything away from the Persols btw. Cool specs also. Just out of no real interest to anyone. I went to school with Daniel... Hilbre on the Wirral. Total class, what a school. Difference is I am still waiting for my acting carrier to take off. Lol.
NJF lol I have both TF and Persol glasses - my faves are the Steve McQueen edition 714s

This was fantastic, Jay! Thanks for bringing this English Gentleman on the show.. 😃
Love the Marcos! It brings back memories of my 1971 Lotus Europa I bought in ‘74! I was 6’4” tall at the time and it went like a scalded cat. I did look ridiculous getting out of it but everyone wanted a ride. Unfortunately I grew, to 6’8”, and could no longer drive it. I still have the thing though.
hahaha scalded cat!

Thank you Frazer and Jay for a look at a wonderful sports car!❤️
This guy cracked me up, in a good way. I can just see it, moves to LA and thinks, "hmm, what will get me lots of chicks?", takes on the persona of a character from Pride a Prejudice (1995) and knocks it out of the park :)
Love the car, sleek, simple and purely for the love of driving.
