I just realized... this is probably a storefront placeholder for places with a lot of shrinkage. This would go on the peg, so people can snatch them - but they keep the stock behind the counter/storeroom.
Not sure why you would do that with a 2GB knock off MP3 player - but when I worked retail, a couple of locations had these decoys (No, I'm not talking about display models (we had those too), we'd have decoys and would swap them at the counter - Like how Gamestop puts empty game cases up) and people would try to return the stolen decoys and then they'd get carted off in cuffs for shoplifting.
Why did it have real buds in it, though?
@@joearnold6881 that's a good question that I don't have answers for. Our dummies had what looked like real buds but I never checked to see if they were real.
My best guess is they were QC failures, or that those generic buds are so cheap they practically give them away

It's a display/dummy unit. People kept stealing the ones that were on display so instead they made fake ones. Like they used to do with packs of cigarettes, all filter.

@@financialzero5684 this is meant for poor and emerging markets, if your parents earn less than $1/day, something like this might mean the difference between you having a device to play with, or none at all. That's why reviewing these products on the western markets is a bit rediculous.
So they put a dummy mp3 player with real working headphones, makes sense.
@@KajuTheRudeMonke make sense considering how expensive real earbuds are compared to fake ones. It's meant to discourage stealing of display units in poor countries. The alternative theory would be that someone went to the trouble of removing the guts of a working device to sell the shell only. Which for a cheap mp3 player makes zero sense. Especially since most shops and online sellers are bound to accept returns.

This is hilarious. I thought that packaging looked really nice actually, and now we know why. It was literally never intended to be opened. 😂
I think that’s truly the point-it was only ever meant to be looked at from the outside. I suspect this was an evaluation sample with a dummy player and no instruction in it sent out by the packager. A batch of these would have been sent to the rights holders (DC/Warner/Turner/etc.) for inspection before the production run so they could make sure all parties were satisfied with the copy, images and product presentation before churning 100,000+ of the functional, final product out of the factory.
@@madattheinter this is what I immediately thought, just a inspection sample never meant to leave the offices, but eventually was auctioned off in a lot and ended up on ebay.

A Display Nugget, the worst of all nuggets.
It probably was used to sit on a display at a tradeshow while someone said, "Don't you want this nugget on your shelves?" or at a retailer to show the product, but an actual product was pulled at checkout (because people would totally steal such a lovely nugget).
Someone on eBay probably got a hold of a box of display units or from someone who pick it up after it was done with use (or literally nipped it from a store thinking it was a lovely nugget)
