I'm not a fan of the trope of "killing a character off in an unexpectedly-sudden way for gags". They did it with Sabretooth as well, and whenever it happens, I almost never laugh or find it interesting. It's just -- "oh, look, my expectations have been subverted". Sometimes, characters are killed off quickly and unceremoniously, but it's done in a serious manner -- look at how the mutants get killed off in the beginning of Days of Future past. Colossus gets his arm ripped off, and Bobby gets his head snapped off and crushed. These are all sudden and surprising, but it's done with some weight, to show off how dire the situation is, and how dangerous these Sentinels are. When it's done for a gag, though, it's all the "subversion" without the flavor. It's just "ahahah, Sabretooth got killed in one hit" -- and that's that. Same thing with Johnny here. I don't know the canon "rules" of everyone's powers, but I'm pretty sure that Pyro wouldn't be able to suck the fire out of Johnny like he's a tank of propane.
@@jacobway468yet completely contradicts the fact that every time sabertooth fought Wolverine in X-men 2000 he won Hell Wolverine is not the one who beats sabertooth in that movie it’s cyclops he laser sabertooth knocking him down to a boat if he’s strong enough to beat 2000s Wolverine then he can beat the worst Wolverine this is supposedly 2000s X-men sabertooth same costume and he’s played by Tyler mane
I was fine with how the Torch was treated: Evans likely wasn't cheap so I figured they weren't gonna get a lotta mileage out of his character here. It was good to see him again, but he didn't overstay his welcome. The one that I'm upset about (and that may be putting it too strongly) is Sabretooth. Sorry, but that should've been an actual fight scene and not a two-second gag. I'm fine with Wolverine winning, but, being a huge fan of the character, there absolutely should've been more to it. The worst part is that was right around the part where Johnny got beat so you had two irrelevant non-fights within minutes of each other. Honestly, I'd rather Sabretooth not have been there at all instead of what happened.
I feel it was more an attempt to poke fun at the idea of matchups. Human Torch loses to Pyro. Wolverine really really should have decapitated Sabretooth at some point, something I know I thought about after seeing their long term rivalry/hatred. It was how the matchup really should have gone, but it does put some development on Wolverine, not wanting to kill Sabretooth and presumably having chosen to not kill him. Unfortunately the one we see in the film just has no chill and Sabretooth probably had a hand in the destruction of his world's X Institute, so it was time to take the gloves off.
@@CrysJaL I can certainly see all that, but, at the same time, it just shouldn't be that easy, regardless of if Wolvie'd just had enough. As presented, it basically says that Sabretooth never should've been a match for Wolverine, which simply isn't true (despite what X-Men Origins would have us think). All told, the movie wasn't about the pair, and I was fine with Wolverine killing him (it's happened a couple times in the comics at this point). It should've just been treated as a little bit more than a redundant joke. I know that sounds weird in regards to a Deadpool movie, but still.
I've seen a lot of people say that they nerfed the human torch, but as far as I can tell, Pyro is literally the perfect counter for the human torch. That said I woul've expected torch's sheer firepower to be incredibly difficult to manage. I would've thought that the two would basically lock each other into a stalemate. That's the joke I was expecting, for the two of them to be just in the background having an intense staredown but unable to actually contribute much else.
Here's the list of Johnny Storm's powers. Tell me how exactly does Pyro counter any of them 1. Pyrogenesis: The Human Torch possessed the mental ability to control ambient heat energy and the physical ability to transform his entire body, or portions of his body into a fiery, plasma-like state of will... 2. Plasma Form: The Human Torch can envelop his body or parts of it with superheated plasma that manifests as flame in oxygen environments... 3. Fire Generation and Manipulation: The Human Torch can shape the flame from his body into forms such as streams, spheres or even skywriting. These flames require his concentrations to maintain their current shape and will burn out in approximately 3 minutes unless infused with additional flame 4. Nova Flame: The Torch refers to his highest, hottest levels of plasma that he can create as his "nova flame." The exact temperatures that his "nova flame" can attain are not known. 5. Heat Manipulation: The Human Torch can manipulate the temperature of objects and environment within his range even when not aflame. He can both raise and lower the temperature, as well as extinguish open flames by absorbing them into his body. 6. Heat Absorption: The Human Torch can absorb heat from external sources. 7. Superhuman Durability: The Human Torch is extremely durable. He was able to shake off a punch from Gladiator, and has taken multiple punches from Namor. 8. Immunity to Fire and Heat: The Human Torch is immune to heat and fire both from himself and from outside sources. 9. Cold Resistance: Human Torch seems to have a degree of resistance to cold.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but the actor who played Dr. Doom in these films. Julian McMahon really just fucking cooked in every scene he was in. I really wish Marvel would have let him reprise the role for the MCU. He was a perfect Doom in an imperfect film.
I wouldn't say Torch was nerfed, him being beat by Pyro was bound to happen. It's not about power, it's just a matter of logic. Torch generates fire, Pyro controls fire. Simple as that. He would never win. Now, in terms of honoring the character, who deserved better than a quick death joke, yeah, they messed up on that. Just like Sabretooth, got tossed away in one shot, just pointless really. It's exactly what people didn't want. There's literally a video to pay tribute to the actors and all of their work, but the only ones getting honored really are Wesley Snipes (who wasn't even part of Fox Marvel), Jennifer Garner (which was nice), Dafne Keen (very nice) and Hugh Jackman (obviously). I honestly think they should've switched Gambit with Torch. Gambit becomes friends with Deadpool, Sabretooth knocks him out and he blows everything up to get Wolverine and Deadpool free from Cassandra. Keep Torch as the mysterious member until he shows up to help as the secret weapon against Cassandra, where Pyro still beats Torch, but one of the others knocks Pyro out. He shows up last posing staring at Deadpool and Wolverine jumping through the portal. Done. They could've done a much better job with the character, even if he was only to show up for one scene to keep it under budget. Everyone wants to see Chris back, both as Captain America AND as Human Torch, so this can't be the last we see of him.
I actually really like him being defeated by pyro. How specific abilities interact should have presedence over raw power. I think this makes things a lot more interesting and makes people fight more tactically.
It was great seeing him in the film. He's not nerfed though, when you learn about pyro and what he's capable of. Just a bad match up for torch. Pyro can manipulate fire so johnny was better off not transformed. The one thing he can manipulate lol. We can actually make an argument that pyro was nerfed if we consider his comic counterpart and feats
I get what youre saying but Pyro's ability is control over fire, whereas the Torch's power is *creating* fire and flying. If it were established that Pyro couldnt control supernova level temperatures, I'd agree with you. maybe Torch couldnt go supernova anyway as he was weak from living as a scavenger...?
@@SOM-y4x like a flamethrower, the torch works better with range attacks. Although it would have been cool to see Johnny's flames go out only for him to resort to H2H fighting instead (showing he's not dependant on fire)
It was so good seeing Human Torch again, but such a slap in the face when he got overpowered by Pyro... fucking PYRO?!?! Chris Evan's comedic chops are vastly underrated and recently, underused. Love to see him do more hilarious roles.
I understand being jarred but I'd agree with others. Pyro is just a perfect counter to him. He got unlucky (they needed to keep actor's time in the movie short so that's why he got unlucky)
@steelclackers2611 although it's a different human torch and a different pyro looking at the 2 on screen strength before this movie human torch could literally speed blizt him but that's why variants exist

@@trevorphilips9065 THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS!! His power is flaming on, Pyro's powers are controlling flames, in no scenario does Johnny come out on top

To answer your question the only other flying scene I can think of that could match the Johnny vs silver surfer flight is the iron man f22 dogfight from the first movie. The way that scene is constructed with tony flying against those jets still has some of the best VFX work seen in the mcu to this day. Probably the best VFX work in the mcu if I’m being honest.
Silver Surfer was NOT perfectly adapted. They made the extremely confusing choice to have him be CGI when he's on his surf board which is fine, but then he changes to being a dude painted silver when he's separated from that surf board. He also starts dying the longer he's separated from it which is not how his powers work. When separated from his surf board he would simply revert back to a normal human with no powers at all. The other problem with Silver Surfer other than changing how his powers work is just the horrible way that his character was adapted. The movie made him a villain when he's not actually evil. Silver Surfer became that by making a deal with Galactis to save his home planet. His whole thing is that he goes around looking for uninhabited planets for Galactis to devour so that he's not killing millions of people. Meanwhile the Silver Surfer in this movie comes to Earth, sees the huge population and civilization and decides "Yeah this seems like a good planet for Galactis to devour." The whole movie them becomes trying to convince him that Earth is worth saving and they only manage to do that by saving his life when he was dying. You shouldn't have to convince Silver Surfer not to kill billions of people because that is literally the entire purpose of his deal with Galactis in the first place. Also Deadpool didn't nerf Johnny Storm. They made him fight Pyro from the X-Men. Think about it, Johnny Storm is a character who can create fire from his body and Pyro is a character who can control fire to do whatever he wants which means of course there is no possible way that Johnny Storm can fight Pyro.
If Josh Trank taught us anything, is that you can't go from a low-budget movie to a big-budget movie like Fant4stic You need to go from low to medium, and then from medium to big Is all about gaining credibility. You never know when a studio is gonna think they can control you. You need to show them that you know what you're doing better than them.
If you check the character's history, Johnny Storm also possesses pyrokinetic abilities, so it's unlikely he would've been defeated by Pyro, but anything for a joke, I guess.
Check his history? As in one-off times where writers buffed the character for the sake of their own story while it lasts? Human torch has never been consistently & regularly able to control fire like pyro can. His whole thing is that he *_specifically generates_* it using his body.
If you check the character’s history, you’d see that Pyro beat the Torch several times. Not only that but this whole discussion is irrelevant bc that isn’t even the DIRECT Johnny from the old movies, its another version. The failed version, might I add.
I think the reason it was not the full F4 team cameo is that you might have some trouble getting Alba back and getting Chiklis into the suit again. Grufudd, I have no idea, you probably could get him with a big enough payday. But mainly I'd assume its the fact that Reynolds and Evans are real life friends that it was easy to get in contact and convince him. Plus the fact he has modern marvel studios connections from being cast as cap. Overall way easier to reel him in with all those connection points. Plus the scale of the cameo was not huge in the end. It would add a lot of run time to set them all up and knock them down somehow. Otherwise they kind of wash the fight on the badguy stronghold pretty hard, being an actual practiced team and having way more "superpowery" superpowers compared to the kind of mostly melee/martial arts characters present in the movie. Just to say, I don't really have much affection for those F4 movies. Of the F4 in general. I always just looked at Evans Johnny as a funny marvel footnote before he got to his "real" marvel role. But I completely agree with you on how fast torch got shut down on his reveal in DW. I have argued that since I saw it but I feel like everyone was so high on the movie they didn't want to hear a bad word said. I feel like after that long getting a character back and not giving him his show off moment on some goons is criminal in terms of comic book writing. The obviously compleltey understand the tradition when it comes to Gambit and co, but Johnny gets nothing. I get the logic of Pyro always having strong control of fire since he can't generate it himself, but just write it so that the initial crew does not have him present and Johnny mops the floor with them, but then Cassandra or whoever is informed torch is causing trouble and she sends her hard counter to him out there and thats when they get captured and the movie proceeds as normal. Torch gets his moment, plus we build the bad guy threat a little and show she is informed about who is still out in the void and has been smart in gathering the right people and knows when to deploy them. Because how it goes in the movie is just so jarring, the build and the "flame on" and then nothing? For the whole movie? No CGI fire roasting nameless henchmen, or even deadpool if he gets on his nerves, or aerial acrobatics? Not even trying to hit on anything that moves? He doesn't get to BE Torch. And the death also sort of left me with a feeling of "really? Thats all you got him here to do?" I guess the post credit scene at least extended his screen time, but not really with anything that you expect or want from a torch specific cameo primarily. But overall, thats what it was. A cameo. In a comedy movie. And a Deadpool one at that. It could have been handled better, but I can't really expect them not to take the joke route every time. .
If you read between the lines Johnny Storm in the wasteland kind of became that full blown Hero. In the FF4 movies, he was getting his feet wet with that but he seemed very impactful on those in the void. I think either he was the Leader, or the much needed heart of the rebels, maybe even both. Honestly it felt like he could've formed a Good, Bad and Ugly trio with Wolverine and Deadpool. Something about the bad boy being the most heroic is wholesome and ironic. Him being a better trash talker than both Deadpool and Wolverine is a character trait that I hope sticks in future stories
He was killed off purely for a joke which admittedly was funny, and it did make sense within the movie, if you put the Human Torch against Pyro, a character who’s whole gimmick is manipulating Fire, yeah Johnny Storm ain’t winning that. But then again it’s really whoever the writer says wins.
I think Johnny would create more fire than pyro could control. Like yea, he would be able to control it at first, but over time johnny just creates more and more fire until it fully engulfs pyro, then turning the heat up to supernova. Also, yea pyro can control fire, but johnny basically is fire. He basically be immune to whatever fire pyro throws at him. Just how i see it going down.
I guess my question is how do you think Pyro would be able to hurt Johnny Storm, exactly? We've never seen evidence to show that Johnny can only produce a limited amount of fire.
I made this comment on the review video you did. I think it fits my excitement: I was so excited when I saw Chris Evans as Johnny Storm! I clapped and cheered. No one else didn't even cheer? I'm like the films were not that bad, gosh. I'm in my 20s, and kids who are kinda in the back behind me were so annoying. "Oh wow, that's not Cap it's that guy from the Fantastic Four wow" like without any excitement like you couldn't even get his name right lol. "That Guy," I don't get it, felt like they were just commenting even during the nice video at the end of the film. I made some shortouts When I saw Ben Grimm and the others but they couldn't shut up commenting the entire time gross. - Luke
I don't think Downey is going to be playing Victor Von Doom. If I remember correctly, there is a comic book multiversal variant of Tony Stark that becomes Doctor Doom. Possibly due to some possession nonsense, but I do believe Downey is still mostly playing Tony Stark here.
I still think Invisible Woman is the most powerful member, even with the nova flame. Doctor Doom said it during the Mark Waid run, when the FF occupied Latveria and he took over Sue's body.
Human Torch wasn’t “Nerfed” he can create fire but Pyro controls fire the comics Pyro versus Human Torch, the same thing happens if it wasn’t for Spider-Man Johnny would’ve died.
He didn’t get nerfed. Pyro controls fire. Silver Surfer took him down with a choke and by removing his oxygen. Its both very hard and very easy to take Johnny out
@@petermj1098 The Thing could've done the same thing too, so it's not about Surfer being a cosmic tier threat (depending on continuity) but that he just happened to be resistant enough to Johnny to actually choke him out in flame form.
It's the other heroes in X-Men comics effect, where writers nerf/stupify the non-mutant heroes in an x-man title if they happen ti show up. It happened with cap in x-men 97, it'll keep happening.
Pedro Pascal as Reed?? I love the man but I don't really think that's the role for him. They should've actually gone back to John Krazinski even though his original Reed was for the plot (and a joke). He looked perfect as Reed!
“We want the actual versions of the characters we know, not just their faces” despite the fact that the Wolverine in the movie is not the one we know like at all. It should’ve been the Wolverine from the timeline that didn’t end with Logan(either original trilogy timeline or DoFP timeline)
Its just a variation version for me. I dont care if they intended it to be the exact Johnny from the movies. Johnny wouldnt go out out like that. Much like how i dont think the characters in No Way Home arent the actual characters from the movies. Just variations (except the spidermen?) If you think those characters are the actual ones from the film, it completely ruins the films they are from. So yeah, hes just a variation and my Boy Is still doing his thing in his world
I love how they establish a multitude of reasons why Pyro would beat Torch here, yet everyone is ignoring them lol EDIT: I seriously do not know why everyone rags on Jennifer as Elektra 😭
Counterpoint: The FF4 movies were all bad movies, like Green Lantern of the same era. His death was funny and it showed Cassandra Nova as an omega level threat. And just like Ryan Reynolds killed off himself (essentially twice) in DP2 to take the piss out of the character, Chris Evans got to off his version of The Human Torch in a fun (and extremely unexpectedly violent) way. They could have done a similar gag death with Ghost Rider (Nick Cage) or Daredevil (Ben Affleck) and had a similar laugh killing off a big named actor early, but would have lost the Cap confusion which was also funny and good way to show variants/the multiverse quickly without excessive dialog.

The sabretooth kill was to show how strong Wolverine is
@@jacobway468yet completely contradicts the fact that every time sabertooth fought Wolverine in X-men 2000 he won Hell Wolverine is not the one who beats sabertooth in that movie it’s cyclops he laser sabertooth knocking him down to a boat if he’s strong enough to beat 2000s Wolverine then he can beat the worst Wolverine this is supposedly 2000s X-men sabertooth same costume and he’s played by Tyler mane
@@jacobway468also they were hyping Wolverine vs sabertooth in trailers like it was gonna be a fight and not what we got in the movie
Can’t he just be kidnapped by Professor X’s sister and then they save him and he joins the team at the end(
I've seen a lot of people say that they nerfed the human torch, but as far as I can tell, Pyro is literally the perfect counter for the human torch. That said I woul've expected torch's sheer firepower to be incredibly difficult to manage. I would've thought that the two would basically lock each other into a stalemate. That's the joke I was expecting, for the two of them to be just in the background having an intense staredown but unable to actually contribute much else.
That would have been funnier!
Here's the list of Johnny Storm's powers. Tell me how exactly does Pyro counter any of them
These flames require his concentrations to maintain their current shape and will burn out in approximately 3 minutes unless infused with additional flame
I imagine they'll try to get both prior Reeds in for a Council of Reeds scene in future.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but the actor who played Dr. Doom in these films. Julian McMahon really just fucking cooked in every scene he was in. I really wish Marvel would have let him reprise the role for the MCU. He was a perfect Doom in an imperfect film.

I really hope we finally get a faithful FF movie. I liked 2000's films for what they were but they didnt feel like the true FF movies we deserved.
I was disappointed with the cheap laugh of Pyro beating Johnny that easily. We all know Johnny would have overpowered him.
Well yeah. If human Torch charged at him. Pyro would be done with. But that was the wrong time to do long range attacks.

Human torch can control fire too and do much more than just that. It's like trying to kill Zeus with a taser gun
He should've charged at him.
@@SOM-y4x like a flamethrower, the torch works better with range attacks. Although it would have been cool to see Johnny's flames go out only for him to resort to H2H fighting instead (showing he's not dependant on fire)

I’m praying that the Johnny Storm in D&W is a variant, because I wanna see the original Fantastic Four return.
It literally is
If Josh Trank taught us anything, is that you can't go from a low-budget movie to a big-budget movie like Fant4stic
You need to go from low to medium, and then from medium to big
Is all about gaining credibility. You never know when a studio is gonna think they can control you. You need to show them that you know what you're doing better than them.
To be fair, Johnny wasn't begging for his life; he was denying damning accusations.
He knew what was coming though
Would love some Letterkenny level banter between Spidey/Torch and whatever foe they're taking down
The Evans Torch and Maguire Spidey fit so well
If you check the character's history, Johnny Storm also possesses pyrokinetic abilities, so it's unlikely he would've been defeated by Pyro, but anything for a joke, I guess.
@@silversoulken I was referring to the character from the source material, but that gets ignored since that requires reading.
It could have been handled better, but I can't really expect them not to take the joke route every time.
.
I loved the 2000s Fantastic Four so much
If you read between the lines Johnny Storm in the wasteland kind of became that full blown Hero.
Dont sweat it i don't think its the same johnny at all. I think they went out of their way to make him visually clearly a different johnny

Johnny Storm smokes Pyro 10 out of 10 times im sorry!
The joke wasn't really that funny.
