Hey Guys, as many of the regulars know - due to the lack of images as well as the scruples of CBS - I will sometimes use images that may not have exactly canon material in them. The Voice over is what I have been able to confirm - and can be found on screen. The images may be slightly off. However, sometimes I get things wrong - which is crazy, I know. For instance, I said that I couldn't confirm that there was a shuttlebay and I thought it was odd. One of the MSD images (one I did not think was canon) shows a shuttle bay. However, I did some more research and found that this was actually in the episode 'hero worship' - which means in canon that it does have a shuttle bay. This image makes no sense in canon given the structure and I'm pretty sure they make you go through a warp nacellee to get to it ;P Or you have to use a transporter.. but regardless..there it is..anyone who comments about the shuttle bay will be pointed at this pinned tweet.

I think it was more used as an AWCS than a in-combat ship. Using its highly developed systems to analyze potential weaknesses in the enemy ships and feeding key tactical information to the combat vessels.
However due to its underpowered engines it often found itself caught in the fray and lacking defensive capabilities it never lasted long.

    • @nocelebrity6042
      @nocelebrity6042 6 років тому +3

If you have to go "through" the nacelle, then maybe the bay is actually in an opening under the pylon, or in the center of the saucer, like on the Defiant.

We real did not know lot about what Oberth class starship and it combat ables. In the Search for Spock we did not get to the USS Grissom see it return fire. Klingon lucky shot and destroy it out right. We also do not know if other experimental equipment on the USS Grissom might have help blow it up . However with at photon toropdoes launchers being duel use and used launch probes It likely that Oberth class at least one photon torpedoe luancher . This would back more so by TNG Pregasus with the Admiral making the statement USS Pregasus use experimental weapon systems. Which likely means it had photon torpedoes and at least one phaser bank.
Now saying only foal send Oberth class starship into battle face Borg Cuble is not account either though. Alone no UFP starship we know stand real chance against Borg be it the Oberth class or Promomus class. In fleet though story little different again the Oberth class has some weapons. At least one phaser bank and strong evidence that has photon torpedoes going do some damage. Also entire fleet attacking going last target to get hit. Which mean do more damage other ship be first to go and possible even survival the fight simple by one weaker hitting ships.
Last thing point out is that escape podes hardly joke things go wrong science to need get off the ship.

always liked to believe that the Federation uses its most advanced ships like Galaxy or sovereigns on its outer borders to Cartography and scan everything on the flyby and encounter the most serious and unknown hazards. The second wave would be a ship like the intrepid which can land and act like an outpost while exploring more in detail but still be fast enough to run and strong enough to face threats not recognized or just missed by the first cartography ship. The third would be short range explorers like the Oberth and newer Nova class which operate mostly within federation and already relatively well explored space where dangers as weapon fire is almost not happening. And older designs were updated and acted mainly as support ships. The Problem with that is that the newer Designs in the case of a battle are most likely far far away and the bulk of the fleet that can be gathered quickly are those scientific designs or the older ships in the support roles.
additionally If i were S31 i would use Defiants (but they are to rare but the right crew size) or nova (maybe still too new to get ignored by most) or exactly the Oberth-Class to conduct my super secret experiments and missions. I mean most enemy and even Starfleet officers would just ignore a ship like that doing what it does in the background since its nothing special and no particular threat also often has civilian crew onboard which would explain if it sometimes handles things a bit odd in the eyes of a trained starfleet officer but if they don't cry for help would probably left alone and get ignored by most. So yea perfect ship for secret missions and testing of special equipment like phase cloaking devices no one should know about. And the one at Wolf359 well maybe that one was one of those obeths with the new and classified weapons or shield array currently installed for testing and they thought why not test them on the real enemy currently invading Federation space. But don't managed to get away fast enough as they realized their equipment wasn't up to the task.

Apparently two of the experimental systems that were tested on the Oberth related to crew safety and survivability.
First of all, seat belts at combat crew stations such as helm and weapons.
And secondly and most innovative, circuit breakers on all consoles to prevent injuries and deaths from exploding panels caused by damage to ship systems they were linked to.
Unfortunately battle test scenarios revealed that they made no difference to casualty rates of the Oberth crews, which were still at 100%, so they were never implemented fleetwide.

Similar to the Star Wars Skipray Blastboat, this ship could have been massively overpowered and had very heavy shields and armament and that phase cloaking device that would enable it to be one hell of either an Intel ship, or a fast strike ship.
Or, the Oberth could have been just a plain comfortable yacht with adequate performance and with whatever the tastes a 23rd Century individual of wealth would have. Huge vista windows for observation, holographic suite for entertainment and movies. A large library, swimming pool, beautiful wood and exotic paneling.

Being the military history nerd I am the oberth seems like it would work as a sort of AWACs ship. It would not be expected to directly enter combat but would use its superior sensor capability to visualize and map the battlespace. Also in regards to the Borg engagements it may have been present specifically to gather data on the Borg that was used to design tech used to fight them later.

If we think about it, there's probably very good reason Starfleet had a lot of Oberth class ships; They're tiny, and most likely cheap to build and can have a skeleton crew compliment of FIVE. By star trek standard, it's like manning a rowboat with a machine gun strapped onto it. And sending it against a warship. Or strapping a turret on a mobile laboratory. I like the latter way more.
Another thought I had is Starfleet's fetish for refitting their ships, making sure they have the longest service time as possible, save for getting destroyed, with the most notable example being the Excelsior class, would most likely have made the Oberth class a pretty important logistics ship as well, if you refit it to have the secondary hull be either supply haul, hospital ships, and during the dominion war, maybe be the testbed for overcomming the Breen energy dampening weapon. Imagine how terrified the test crew must've been with every failed test attempt to that weapon, after the Cardassian resistance supplied Starfleet with one. Sure, the test crew probably weren't in danger, unlike their comrades at the front.
For all the shit the Oberth gets, I think it still should be called a "tough little ship" for withstanding the tests of half-mad, and sometimes insane brilliant, science.

And really, with the kind of technology they have - a larger number of smaller ships would make more logical sense. We've been shown in the TNG era that computers are so advanced that ship functions can largely go on automatically. So from an operations standpoint if you don't actually need 1000 people to run a ship, why build larger ships when you get more bang for your buck building a higher quantity of smaller ones?

The Oberth. A flying casket. The USS Ford Pinto. A tough little ship? That’s the Defiant-class. There is no good reason whatsoever to design, construct and deploy a ship like the Oberth which has minimum weapons and shielding, even as a science vessel. Not to mention keeping it in service for decades or more. A science/cargo/transport vessel needs really good shields and weapons AND propulsion just as any regular old Starfleet vessel. Maybe even more. Space, on it’s own, can be really dangerous. A high-radiation environment, where stuff like solar flares, CMEs(coronal mass ejections), novas and supernovas can occur without warning and you have to leave at maximum warp. Why have the Oberths when you have Mirandas, Novas, Magees, Nebulas and Crossfields which can do the same job but much better in all aspects? Even the Defiants could do a better job as science/cargo/transport/patrol vessels.

    • @thomashong2938

@@gmjosh2766 That’s not an excuse for designing, constructing and deploying the Oberths. Why do that when you have Mirandas, Novas, Defiants, Magees, Nebulas and Crossfields that can do the same job but far, far better? Oberths are flying caskets disguised as Starfleet vessels. The design should have been rejected and the prototypes should have been handed over to Section 31 to do whatever they saw fit to do with it.

I've always viewed the Oberth as Starfleets version of a US Coast Guard cutter, or a maybe corvette.
The kind of ship that can be used for just about anything with minimal alterations, but whose crews unofficial motto would be something like
"We gotta go out. We don't gotta come back."
A ship that could be used for SaRs, science, mapping, training, picket, and supply operations; but which can in extremis be thrown in to the teeth of death and make sure the opposing force knows they've been kissed. The picket one though is something that makes most sense to me. They're tiny ships, with tiny crews, which would make them ideal for holding a position that's too valuable to leave to something as fragile as a Runabout or Peregrine fighter, but not valuable enough to essentially waste the abilities of a heavier unit on.
I'm sure someone below will have mentioned that maybe they were used in something akin to AWAC operations; a science speciality would make them ideal platforms for finding those hard to spot weak points in an opponents hull/system/formation.
Honestly I see a lot of parallels between the Oberth and, my personal favourite Trek starship, the Archer Class. They're small, with ill defined (perhaps purposely?) roles but seem like they could do an awful lot in the right hands.

    2. The reason why Oberth class ships were at Wolf359 was because Starfleet had to raise an armada as fast as possible. if it had a phaser bank it was drug into the fleet. Admiral Hanson was no fool, he was forced to use every ship available to try and stop the Borg.

It makes a lot of sense to use an older science vessel as a testbed for new technology - I assume that the interior was highly modular to accommodate different mission profiles, which would make the addition of experimental technology easier.
I like to think that the Nova class eventually replaced the Oberth's original scientific role - not terribly big or fast, and not intended to be out on the frontier. After the big explorers go through a system, little ships like these arrive and do the long-term research.

With perhaps 6 Galaxy class ships at the time and probably not yet hundreds of Nebulae covering a truely massive volume of space its no surprise they were not on hand for the battle.
I would also imagine the remaining Ambassadors and still substantial Excelsiors shared deep space duty due to the huge amount of space being explored and they were probably the go to vessels to patrol existing borders. Numerous and advanced enough for the job yet not so rare that such a post would be a waste. You wouldnt stick your Galaxy class prude of the fleet on mundane border patrol during peace time, even if they might be better than any two or three lesser ships.

And did you mean Crossfield class? Theres little info on the actual Springfield class. The Xfield imo was a specialty design, probably with only three ships built ( Xfield, Glenn,Discovery) due to some very specific features like the articulated rings and the engineering hull probably being so large to house spore cultivation.

Every Star Fleet iteration misused the "scout" functions of a class like this. If it had powerful sensors and was small enough to be stealthy, it could sit on the Federation border and troll at low impulse power, while using it's sensors to probe deep into Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, or Breen space, and send real-time data to the rest of the fleet. It could have taken the place of the old Border posts that the Romulan's destroyed.
At Wolf 359 or Sector 001, it could have been used to monitor the battle, and then sneak in afterwards for rescue operations. I don't think it would have ever actually been a combat vessel. The problem with the Grissom in Star Trek III was the same problem that most Starfleet vessels had when facing the Klingons of that era. Their shields were weak against torpedo attacks. This was made painfully apparent during the Enterprise-A's engagement with General Chang's Bird of Prey in Star Trek VI. Even a fully shielded Enterprise took some hull damage at the point of impact, and the Oberth is a much less robust design than a TMP Constitution. A direct hit at the right point could still destroy the ship even with shields fully raised. Only the Excelsior could shrug off a torpedo hit with no obvious damage.

I'm not quite sure on this one, but hear me out. You're focusing primarily on its role as a combat vessel and viewing it exclusively from that perspective. Starfleet however was never intent - at least until the borg/ dominion threats - on producing real warships, which is essentially why they got beaten so hard in the initial phase of the dominion war. Now the Oberth as far as I remember is indeed mainly a science ship, as you have stated. The fact that it was thrown into the battle of Wolf 359 and Sector 001 does not however constitute its role as a warship, it merely shows the utter desperation starfleet and the federation faced during that time; This is also the reason why they threw ships at the borg that still had civilians on them. There just wasn't time to get them off board and they were on the brink of defeat, thus throwing in everything that had something like a phaserbank. So all in all I think it's unfair to judge this ship mainly on its performance during combat, that'd be like judging a dude by his cupsize (okay that comparison sucks, but you get what I mean) or a girl by her dicksize.
Also when it was destroyed by a bird of prey, that still doesn't constitute its role as a combat vessel. It just shows that at times, starfleet vessels get surprised by enemies.

I really have no canon evidence to back this supposition up, but as I studied the Oberth design in a science and research role, I developed the impression that the saucer/warp propulsion should be able to undock from the un-powered, science section secondary hull, perhaps to leave it orbiting the planet under study, while the saucer/propulsion unit surveyed the rest of the system. That really is the only way such a design makes sense to me.I suppose too, it would make a good rapid response, evac/ambulance ship. The secondary hull could loaded with injured, repair to a tug train, drop that hull, and pick up another. This would also make it perfect for testing new types of equipment as you propose. The ship could drop whatever secondary it was carrying, and pick up the test bed hull. Another use might be as an ambassadorial mission with the embassy offices and quarters in in the secondary hull, where the primary hall would serve to carry the Ambasador on missions away from the embassy hull. This multifunction really would make it the "little ship that could."

Maybe if this ship so focused on Science that it may have very good and very long range sensor technology. If that was the case maybe this ship sat back from the fight and provided tactical analysis and direction to the fleet without engaging directly. If this was true then it could explain why this ship was at Worf 359 and sector 001. This could also explain some of the damage at Worf 359 as Picard would have been aware of this capacity and would have taken steps to eliminate the command and control infrastructure first therefore making the rest of the ships disorganized / vulnerable. It could also explain the reason that star fleet believed that 40 ships could overcome the borg cube as they would have access to this form of strategy coordination.

I actually have an idea for an STO fan-fic that features a Miranda as a "hero" ship. In the story, the Miranda Class had been retired from active service in the late 2380s, but a plan was proposed to bring the ships back after the war with the Klingons had depleted operational starship numbers to a dangerous level. The admiralty judged that the design was too badly outdated to effectively serve in its current form, so a single ship was brought out of mothballs to serve as a testbed for a class-wide refit. This ship was the U.S.S. Pontiac - NCC-42409, a veteran of several major conflicts, and the last newly constructed Miranda Class to leave the yard - being first commissioned in 2351. The refit is extensive. All of the phaser banks are replaced with phaser strip arrays, and fore and aft phaser cannons are added to the rollbar, with two additional fore cannons placed on the tops of each nacelle. The shield generators are made more robust, taking up twice as much interior space and leaving room for only a single holodeck for recreation. The ship's top speed is increased to warp 9.4, and the warp core is replaced with one that can generate nearly twice the power as the original at full load. The new Miranda effectively combines the firepower of a Defiant with the versatility of a light cruiser, and is touted to be able to stand up to a Vor'cha Class battlecruiser on its own.
If that sounds too good to be true, that's because it is. Initial tests of the new design reveal the ship's EPS grid - which remains mostly unchanged - cannot handle the load of all three enhanced systems (weapons, shields, warp drive) being used at the same time, and the 24th century computer core cannot interface with the 25th century upgrades without continuous maintenance. Various malfunctions all over the ship are a daily occurrence, similar to the lemon Enterprise-A seen in Star Trek V. Starfleet is ready to write the project off as a failure, but the Pyrrhic victory at the Battle of Starbase 24 leaves the fleet in such a desperate state that Admiral Quinn decides to recommission the ship anyway and authorizes an extended shakedown cruise under the watch of recent Starfleet Academy graduates. Cue the tutorial mission of STO. This is the way I see the story of STO canonically begin. The U.S.S. Pontiac is a cantankerous beast of burden, always riding the razor's edge between completely dominating its opponents and suffering a complete systems failure. It is the last hurrah for the Miranda Class, the planned class-wide refit being cancelled because of all of the technical problems, but it is the first command of a Starfleet captain who just might become a legend.

@@Lennis01 I had a similar idea once, only it featured the Sydney class.
Basically, during the Dominion War SF instituted a program to upgrade and "militarize" a bunch of older civilian ship designs, specifically the Aerie and Sydney class transports, to be used as patrol/escort ships (to free up more capable ships) or as resistance vessels just in case the Dominion won. The program focused on robustness and ease of operation. They were designed to be operated by small, minimally trained crews for extended periods in situations where repairs and resupply might not be possible. This resulted in the Skua (Aerie class refit) and Stonefish (Sydney class refit) classes. The Skua was faster and better armed, but not as durable. The Stonefish was slow (top speed warp 8.8 for 12 hours) and minimally armed but much tougher, almost as tough as a Defiant class.
My stories are set aboard the USS Pompanito (Stonefish class) ten years after the Dominion War(2385) She's in rough shape and her crew is a bunch of misfits, but Starfleet needs ships with warm bodies because the Alpha quadrant is completely FUBAR.

in my head canon, when it was in battles like Wolf or 001. The Oberth would be on the outskirts of the battle in the various picket-lines etc. There they would serve as the communications platforms, coordinating the attacks of friendly ships, scanning for weaknesses of the enemies, and relaying information to Starfleet command. I imagine battles could get hectic and ships might get tunnel vision or be too busy to focus on everything at once, so a ship in the background assisting would make sense.

How you describe the Oberth as the unassuming hero is probably my favorite detail. Anyway, I think I understand its role as a scout: The high volume of scientific instrumentation.
Compared to more militarized ships that have sensors meant to scan apposing vessels, the Oberth can use it's highly varied sensors to scan *for* ships, especially those that might not use comms frequencies, or have radiation types and patterns, as ships from the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Scanning for ships of as yet undiscovered species, basically.

Hello , been getting more and more into this stuff , so to preface my comment I have been a fan of trek since I watched TOS as a kid . Now for a long time between the end of ToS the first Movie and TNG , the only thing keeping fandom going was the books cartoon Fanzines and US. Fasa and star fleet battles all grew for this time , and many of my collectable books on ships are from this era. And go beyond beta cannon to wtf are you talking about cannon.
But for what it worth...before it was called the
Oberth class it was called the
Gagarin class , it was built as a fleet auxiliary and a pure Research and Survey ship.
had a crew of about 108
would cruise at warp 5 and a max of warp 7
    had standard shields
    a single dual Phaser bank
No torps ( but might have a probe launcher )
has a small hanger bay with a mix of up to 15 shuttles of varies sizes.

I think you may well be on to something with the suggestion of it being a test bed for other Starfleet equipment, I mean a cruising speed of 4.0 is not overly fast, it seems more likely it would be fitted with the newest good idea of the Starfleet engineers and then sent out to a quiet bit of space not far from home to test the system out, I'd suggest that the relatively small crew complement (between 5 and 80 as you said) would support this, minimal crew so minimal risk to life if the new system has a major malfunction. I also wonder about the saucer separation, given the above it would seem reasonable to me that they may fit the systems to be tested into the lower secondary hull, and if anything went wrong while testing the systems they would be able to jettison this hull in space and head home on the saucer section.Given the adapted shields and hull construction to withstand spacial anomalies I also wonder if it was the ship that got the crappy jobs no-one also wanted of analysing the particularly nasty anomalies, with this in mind it also seems possible a saucer section separation could be useful here, you get all the crew in the saucer section and then send the secondary hull in as essentially a big probe that can carry a lot more equipment than a standard probe, piloted via remote from the saucer section.I could also see the Oberth being useful in battles, not as a combat vessel, but rather as a tender/support for the larger ships, I mean it's unlikely that anyone really saw the Oberths as a threat, so in a major battle the enemy would most likely be focusing their fire onto the bigger, more combat capable ships, leaving the Oberths relatively safe to run around bringing supplies to the combat vessels, possibly conducting exterior damage inspections and generally being a work horse, it also seems that given the fact that they could likely get away with moving around a busy battle area without too much issue they'd be ideal candidates to preform rescue missions for any vessels that were destroyed in battle. And finally I could also see a roll for them as essentially a clean up crew, moving through after the battle and towing any vessel of value back to a starbase, now obviously this would include any Starfleet vessel which may be repairable, but also, what if there's a disabled enemy vessel that's been abandoned, I could see an Oberth being sent out to tow that back and allow the Starfleet engineers and intelligence people to sink their teeth in and study the enemy ships, as well as removing any sensitive material from any Starfleet vessels that will be left on the battlefield as wrecks not Worthing recovering. I honestly love the Oberth class and think it is the most underappreciated, and likely overworked, vessel Starfleet has.
