I imagine the Oberth's at the battle of sector 001 were trying to scan the borg for weaknesses and/or scanner countermeasures to try and disrupt the borg sensors locking onto the fleet. As you point out they couldn't fight, so some form of electronic warfare seems the most likely answer.

Oberth Captain: We may be on an Oberth people, but David felled Goliath! A wasp can sting an opponent to death! So shall it be with us! Death by a thousand cuts lads! Death by a thousand...
Borg: We are the Borg. We have scanned your vessels. We have made a mistake. Your culture cannot have anything that can be used to adapt and service us if you sent these ships to confront us. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please evolve and contact us at a later date.

@@davfree9732 Would be an absolutely hilarious prank on the Klingons/Romulans/Cardassians/Dominion to completely gut an Oberth and fill it up with the systems from a Defiant class. Just imagine the reactions to an Oberth suddenly taking off at high speed shooting ahead of the fleet of modern combat ships, dodging every shot thrown at it, and taking down a battlecruiser solo after over a century of being a laughing stock of the quadrant! The stunned reactions would likely give you at least five minutes of free shots on the enemy fleet!

What if you were the odd Captain like I would've been that would (at least for a time) enjoy commanding a ship like this? Maybe I get to make transport runs to remote colonies and places most starfleet officers don't usually get to see. The big ships are all out on the frontline while I am enjoying traveling to obscure places and frontier systems for transport and science missions. Maybe I enjoy joining an archaeological team on a planet surface for a few months? There could still be adventures to be had on a ship like this just maybe not in the way that officers serving on front line vessels would. Not to mention these are great ships for captains who carry out less liked or less approved missions that can be hidden or kept quiet better and for longer. For instance, the federation phasing cloak was developed on an Oberth class ship. The facts about its development were not even revealed for many years and then only out of necessity to prevent the Romulans from getting it. Also, Perhaps I even enjoy routine patrol missions in peaceful sectors along the Federation borders where dangerous confrontations are extremely rare and almost non-existent.

Correction, the Oberth was replaced by the Nova and Saber class starships. The Saber is a modular class that can be modified to fit any of the three roles Starfleet needs: Science, Patrol, and Combat based on what sensor modules are swapped out and if additional weapons are attached. Meanwhile coordinating recovery of escape pods and beaming out survivors of damaged ships. Perhaps the shuttlebays are multi-purpose. Regs require at least one bay be a shuttle bay, but the others might serve as cargo holds with big outer doors for loading & unloading cargo rapidly. In this era, transporters were not generally used for bulk cargo transfers, we see worker-bees bringing supplies to the Enterprise in TMP. It makes sense as the amount of energy needed to move cargo about in microgravity with worker-bees would be miniscule compared to using a transporter.
I justify the Oberth still being in use in the 24th Century because so many were built as they are cheap to build, easy to reconfigure to different mission profiles. We do see that starting with the Excelsior Class and Oberth Class era, Federation Starships are very upgradeable, so it must have been cheaper to just keep upgrading Oberths rather than replacing them, and then at some point they weren't making any more so the Nova was designed to take over the role. This happens all the time in real life.

Question: Why would you assume turbolifts would be used to travel between habitable sections? If you're going to that much trouble to isolate the two sections, you might as well go whole hog and have travel between sections done via transporter only. Especially if internal volume is at a premium.

I actually really like design, and if it had a few tweaks and maybe scaled up a bit, it could be a really versatile and capable ship like the Miranda. It focus on various single purpose roles based on its pod. Being flimsy and lightweight, perhaps it should not be deployed on deepspace missions unescorted, but I wonder how that would be different if it could cloak. Where the procedure could be to cloak and run if any problems arose.

I do firmly believe that the Oberth Class was actually based on a civilian vessel or a planetary patrol vessel for the federation equivalent of a coast guard. It could take on your local riff-faff and be a major problem for those committing crime in federation territory.. Maybe something similar to the equivalent of a yacht.
    Here's what I think.
The Oberths were or are likely a variant of a paramilitary ship that's meant for police forces or the space equivalent of a coast guard for the federation. Its perfect for dealing with shuttles, and small ships that a civilian would likely be using that's committing crimes. Perhaps is a capital ship for your local police or planetary coast guard forces and is extremely high tech compared to the hand me downs they get from Federation surplus.
Or. Its a civilian vessel that was designed from the ground up specifically for science and exploration only probably with some funding by the Federation government. Explaining why its not heavily armed, armored and why it can pop against anything with military grade firepower it was a civilian vessel that was likely to see some light military use likely very light guard duty or peaceful exploration and science missions..
For all we know there could be hundreds of Oberth's flying around federation space doing roles it was designed originally before from giving a idiot the equivalent of a parking ticket or speeding or needing to shuttle officers to quell a riot :P. To being simply being a ship that's sold to the public for the sole purpose of enjoyment exploring known space, seeing the sights. the equivalent of whale watching or safari expeditions or a persons personal yacht. These ships the Starfleet ones are basically the same overall design just with likely better engines, better shields (compared to civ models) Better weapons (compared to civ models) but inherits the majority of the flaws of the civilian model.

Discovery even managed to get a round 2 of new ship design for after the time skip and then they went and blew them all up again... Modern Star Trek writers really love just blowing up all their ships at once lately.... although it might explain the whole "The only ship in range" phenomenon if every time Starfleet built more than twenty ships they would all spontaneously cease to exist in some extravagant disaster.

Really. As I see it. In hindsight the Oberth-Class was not a good ship design. Yet if you step back to a mindset of when it was built. It was using some cutting edge technology for the time and the ship was designed around using that technology for scientific purposes. As Starfleet puts exploration and Science before combat and defense...to the chagrin of those with far more common sense of matters of military but Starfleet has to follow the whims of the Federation and the pacifist politicians. So the Oberth was created to meet these needs and wants.
Have to keep in mind. Even in the real world. There are some crazy designs of ships, cars, tanks, planes, and all sorts of things. All because they were created as an experiment or trying to fit a nitch in some area or fix a problem.
The biggest example I can compare the Oberth-Class to is the M3 Lee (Grant) a World War 2 USA made Tank Destroyer. If you google a picture of the M3 Lee (Grant) right now. You can see it was an ugly tank. And yet it was designed and built to be a stop-gap measure for the war. As it carried a big gun and was lethal during the time against the Panzer. Though its biggest limitation. It was too tall and easy to spot. Plus the armor was not thick enough to take most anti-tank rounds. And it was a drain on manpower as you needed a crew of 8 to even have it full combat ready.
Though the Oberth-Class was not a stop-gap measure and was not built for war in mind. It still fits the area of: "if we throw something together and it works. We build it," Mentality.

have to say i have a real soft spot for the M3 Grant, we got it at a time where we were so desperate we would literally take ANYTHING! and im grateful we had it.
personally i don't think its a good comparison for the Oberth i think a more apt comparison would be with the early war british tanks; Matilda, ect. where there was doctrine and big picture behind it. it was just the wrong doctrine.

I do think that the oberth is also one of the few ships like the odyssey class in star trek online which actually looks like it could perform saucer separation. it is defiantly the nova class of its era, being amazing at what it does but also suffering from being a bit too specialised like the fact that the nova class is a short range which hinders it in my opinion out ways its advantages. The oberth is good at what it does and is what Starfleet is meant to be, peaceful exploration. I think I would have preferred it if the oberth was just the secondary hull and nacelles but the saucer was interchangeable for a combat oriented saucer or a mining variant and we just happened to see the science variant, king of like the Miranda and nebula class, but that's just me.
