Personally, I loved that the hero ship of ST: ENT was underpowered for the vessels of her era. She got stronger in the last two seasons with the addition of photon(ic) torpedoes and enhanced hull plating, but she was still no match for typical alien ships. The NX-01 being an underdog like that really endeared her to me.
I must admit, I was very nearly turned off by the first 2 seasons of Enterprise (not because of the ship). However seasons 3 and 4, sans the ending, really were excellent 'Trek. I definitely agree that the tenacity of the crew and the underdog status of the NX-01 was a large factor in that.
@@ChromeDrakeGaming They eventually got energy shields as well. Which helped in combat yes but also fixed one of the biggest issues they had early on. Polarized Hull plating doesn't stop transporters. They crew on more than one occasion had issues with people being abducted or having supplies stolen simply by a ship flying up beside them and transporting people/supplies right off the ship then flying away.
I think the thing that made Enterprise so durable was its design and redundancies. It could take a pounding, look like shit, but still run reasonably well. Only the warp drive was fragile, everything else on the ship seemed able to take direct hits repeatedly without coming apart.
I like the NX 01. She's always over worked, under powered and out gunned. Yet she takes a beating and wont go down without a fight. The way the show was written it showed the crew to know how to sqeeze every last ounce out of her only to find out she had something in reserve
It was a great Ship. Worthy of the name Enterprise....but than again considering it was the first Enterprise that went into deep space it is more fitting to say...the constitution class NCC-1701...was the one worthy of bearing the name of thise Ship. Same goes for the C and D...the A on the other hand....yeah...not so much....and the B...well i bet it would have been worthy of the name;..if it have been Tuesday.

Those qualities and traits found in the NX Class Starship, are a reflection have humans, and ultimately lead the other species of the Galaxy that valued freedom equality and Liberty Above All Else to join with humans to form both the Coalition of planets and ultimately the Federation. The annex class was unlike anything other species has ever seen before. Sure it was primitive, horribly under powered and under gunned, and likely held together with spit and baling wire. But it was that Never Say Die attitude that you alluded to that led the other species to respect and admire Humanity, to see them more name the Primitive barbarians that they first appeared to be, and ultimately lead the other species 2, at the very least listen the humanities idea about bringing all the like-minded Allies together to form a permanent Alliance or Star Nation that would balance out Klingon Empire and the Romulan star Empire.
We can say one thing though, the NX-01 was built to last, the beating that ship took in the entire series and could still be refitted in a testament to to Earth's build quality even with less advanced technology and defensive systems.
I would argue it was BECAUSE of the less advanced technology that it was tougher. They couldn't as easily mass produce ship parts or get them to the ship as they could later when the Federation was a thing. It had to be built to last.
I agree. They found their niche and it fit. If they had avoided the whole xindi time war and time police nonsense I think they would've had their 7 year run. More effort into a non canon breaking original story...like in a mirror darkly with the Tholian Web tie in. The time war that magically reset... eh.
It would have been better if during the 4th season they continued the Romulan storyline leading up into the Earth Romulan War, instead of doing the Mirror Universe Episodes and going into the whole Terra Prime BS.....
The Xindi/Time War stuff was bad - it's such a shame they didn't focus more on early interaction with the Klingons, Romulans and the formation of the Federation. Shran and the Andorian/Vulcan interactions were the best parts of the whole series and they really worked.
I remember reading a TV guide write up on Enterprise before it was released. They said the US Navy helped with designing the ship. They wanted to make it as much like a submarine as possible.
I loved the very basic level of technologies in Enterprise. The NX01 didn't have the insane super God-Like tech from other shows. We didn't have dialogue like: "Captain, we seem to have entered a pocket of subspace and it's beginning to crush the hull." I completely disagree with your title. The NX was not humanity's failure. It was humanity's claim to the stars. It was our time to get out from under the wing of the Vulcans and shine as who we are. The Vulcans learned a lesson from the events of Enterprise. We are much more adaptable then they thought. I think this stems from the difference in the lifespans of the two species. Im sure that the lack of emotions has a lot to do with this as well. While the Vulcans saw potential in our species, the Andorians saw OUR potential. I believe that fact is a large part of what made the Andorians more friendly to us. My fandom of Star Trek starts in the days of the TOS., I always liked the Andorians, and didn't care much for the Vulcans. I never really understood this until I watched the enterprise show. No matter what anyone says, we are fighters. We always have been and we will always will be. We just need to be provoked first. Remember the old saying, don't push the Pinkskins to the ice.
In one the episodes sarek had a talk with archer about how fast they rebuilt the world in less than 100 years and would surpass them when it took the valcans 1200 years to rebuild.

Archer was such an interesting character all he wanted to do was explore planets and new cultures but he instead he had to go to a darker place and become more of war like character.

To possibly explain the Franklin's designation, NX designations are almost entirely experimental (see NX 2000). If a ship fails its test, its problem is either corrected for continued tests, or is commissioned as an NCC designation ship, keeping the serial. If a ship is decommissioned, destroyed, or re-purposed, the next ship may be named in recurring numerical order. Simply because a ship holds the designation serial of 326, doesn't mean that 326 working ships are present, simply that the ship is test variant 326. Look at it kind of like an experiment number. Some serial designations may be thrown out before production even begins etc.
Another word on registry numbers. My personal take is that it works like this. When a new starship class is approved an initial bloc of consecutive registry numbers is set aside for the class. If the class is a "flop" it may never get past that initial bloc of numbers. But if it's a success, like the Miranda or the Oberth, then subsequent ships built after the exhaustion of those initial numbers just get assigned some random number. This theory can explain both close and widely variant registry numbers for the same class of ship.
This was a very underrated show among Trek purists. As a fan since 1976, I for one was pleased they addressed the pre-Kirk and Spock era. And Scott Bakula was great in this role. The ship itself fit this time and was well thought out. Even the actors of later series’ were jealous of the jumpsuits Enterprise people got to wear. “Jumpsuits and ball caps??!! I've recently been watching Trek for the first time in chronological order. I started with Enterprise. I liked the show. Kinda corny but very enjoyable. The uniforms look great and familiar to something we might wear. I was pleasantly surprised when the uniform made a return in TOS episode Metamorphosis. Cochrane was wearing the same jumpsuit. "So that's where they derived it from!" Nice bit of continuity.
Prequels we’re all (and still kind of are) the rage back then. The series had potential but they really squandered a lot of it in a way worse than they did Voyager. Selling a prequel is always tough because as an audience we generally know the outcome. Thus, the writers need to deliver that outcome in an interesting way whilst respecting Canon. And if you can’t do that, you just claim everything is an in documented experiment and travel 3,000 years into the future. And you get the mess that is Discovery
the NX-02 could not have become what it was without the NX-01, and that's one of the things I loved about Enterprise, Every answer they came up with was genuinely new and on the fly, and while doing so didn't step on the timeline like a certain other show... Kirk, Picard, Janeway All could build upon knowledges gained all the way back to the NX-01 and even more so because of the Federation background,
I love how the show explained how red alert became to be a thing. The crew was completely out of their minds because of a black hole and Reed was going psycho over his (and I love how Tucker puts it) "Reed alert".

Fact is, later while sneeking through the mide of hell, the Red alert protocoll saved the ship, so yes, Rees was maniac about his project, but the project had it's worth. No matter how it was implemented, not even what it was implemented against Captain Orders, it proved it's worth and got accepted by the Captain and later the fleet, cause it makes sense.

I really like how "primitive " it is compared to later versions. It's very utilitarian, and serves its purpose without luxury. I personally loved the enterprise show, maybe even my favorite. Definitely close tie to ds9.
The NX-01 is the most believable warp powered human vessel ever created. Enterprise was so underrated as a series in general. I didn't appreciate it at the time but I do now. And I actually liked the opening song too.
as a show Enterprise was good, love the cast, love the ship and all the tension, suspense, drama action etc was great, I just wish they could have done the 5'th season as planned but at least Andromeda and Babylon 5 made it 5 years, those were really good shows too....

Really, huh? US Navy term? Never heard that. Some old sources say NCC means Naval Construction Contract. Others vaguely suggest old class names were combinations of letters, so might be an NV-class fro the 22nd century Intrepid say.
The NX-01 is one of my favorites aesthetically. I love the way that it looks less futuristic than some of the other ships, and more like I'd imagine a starship if we built it _now_ [with the exception of all the 4:3 displays... that's just _weird_ man] I love that it shares a lot of the most iconic components of the NCC-1701 -- the nacelle configuration, having a saucer section... but it has a more unique layout. The deflector dish is another nice detail -- it's inspired by the original, but it's not just a copy. The fact that the warp reactor was horizontal instead of vertical was also another nice design choice to jive with the original series.
5:00 To be fair, Enterprise was launched without a very good idea of what to expect. But lessons learned by the Enterprise could be applied to Columbia before it's launch. This is not just something in Science fiction. The same is true of just about every "first" in history. The first is usually carried out with a lot less information than later ventures, so one would expect later ventures to be more successful than maiden voyages.
Exactly, the worlds first jet airliner suffered multiple catastrophic failures due to metal fatigue because of lack of information to realise that maybe square cornered windows on a pressure vessel were not such a great idea just as an example.
Yeah, in fact did you know that for the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon the astronauts were told that there wasn’t enough data known to determine how durable the space suits used were? The scientists were so scared that falling over could doom the men to slowly die of suffocation because they couldn’t get back up, would damage the sealing of the suit. That’s one of the reasons the flag was planted so close to the shuttle. Anything to far from the landing craft was considered too risky. It wasn’t until they examined the suits after the mission’s return to Earth that it was found they could get a little banged up on the lunar surface.

What I like about the NX-01 is that they really took a Naval approach on the ship as it did indeed remind me of a sub that's caught between something just after WW2 and what most modern subs today look like - half old tech married to new tech. It really had the "cobbled together" feel that had none of the refinements that became the general aesthetics of future Federation ships. The uniforms were definitely a nod to some of the blue casual flight jumpsuits worn by NASA astronauts - something not many people may have realized back then. The best comparison for me about the NX-01 is the Serenity from Firefly - both have a "rustic" semi-industrial look to them. To be fair though; by the time TNG rolled around, Starfleet wasn't just a human-run agency anymore and had the combined shipbuilding knowledge of its member races at their beck and call. The NX-01 Enterprise was basically an UNTESTED prototype that launched early to prove themselves. It was inadequate, underpowered, and very overworked - but at the same time, any lessons learned during that ship's run was used to further their tech. In essence, they were basically guinea pigs for what was to come - and therefore, true pioneers. They were the frontiersmen that gave birth to Kirk's Wild West Captaincy.
@Robertson Thirdly True, Warp 5 engines I believe were limited to the test vehicles and the NX-Enterprise. I don't think Starfleet had anything else that was capable of warp 5, at least nothing else officially. Section 31 still got around the galaxy through so, perhaps unofficially their was a cargo ship fitted with warp 5 engines.
I disagree with you about the NX series being a human failure. I liked very much the Enterprise series and how it shows the development of both starship and crew. It was a prototype, the first ship with a 5 warp engine and it was our first serious step into the galaxy and other civilizations. Logically it was weak and small but by the end of the series it is impossible not to feel proud for this sturdy and fiercely stubborn starship. Long be remembered the first Enterprise!
I always thought that its low-tech aspects like a grappling hook and missiles added a certain charm and a much needed link between the star trek universe and modern levels of technology.
Despite what most Trek fans say of the Enterprise Show as a whole, I actually thought it was decent and I've enjoyed it and Yes, it did have a lot to do with the ship being so...pragmatic looking then say, next generation which looked like a living room movie theater with fancy looking couches for people preparing to watch Starwars : A New Hope.
The last season of Enterprise after they fired the clowns writing was where the true light of the shows potential shined. Too bad back in the day, it wasn't really pushed to the fans and everyone still thought the show was trash and came back to turned in. If they came out of the gate with Season 4, first, it could of been the best Star Treks... and ....... Faith of the Heart was fine for the debut episode to go "look".... but not as a series opener for every episode.
I love the NX-01 for how inadequate it is. Humanity is taking its first real steps into galactic space and politics, so they try their best. That best fall far short of existing powers, and it shows, but the ship and crew get better with time.
Exactly. Things like the polarized hull plating might have been unexceptional (and almost laughable at times), but that was the point - the Vulcans were holding humanity back technologically, so of course Earth ships were lagging behind the major powers in the region when they first really started out.
Great video! I liked the NX-01 immensely because it took visual cues from Los Angeles class attack submarines in the US Navy. Even the conversion of the crew's mess into a "theater" is taken from submarine life.
What I also thought was neat about the show was the suggestion, through set design, that a LOT of what went into the original NCC-1701's bridge design came from the Andorian ships. Shran's cruiser's bridge had some interesting design elements that reminded me of Pike's bridge.
@ajs1031... Berman, Braga and company toured a 688 class submarine in prep for ST: ENT and, to my knowledge, no other naval vessels. So they got it from submarine life, not merely Navy life.
The Star Trek Universe has continuity problems... period. It doesn't matter which incarnation you're talking about. That's what happens when you have TV shows/movies written by hundreds of different people over several decades, it's going to contradict itself from time to time.
Yes. It was..it did what it was supposed to do and it helped Starfleet expand its reach. It wasn’t perfect but it worked despite not getting a lot of help from the Vulcans. It was successful because of the results.
I guess it all depends on your definition of success. It was Earth's first foray into truly deep space exploration. To expect it to outclass ships whose builders had been doing that for centuries before humanity made its appearance seems a bit unrealistic really.
Uh no you don’t speak for everyone, if it wasn’t for the kelvin timeline I would have never gotten into Star Trek period. I would have never watched TOS, TNG, DS9 or Enterprise as I have now, so no. You don’t speak for everyone, it has its flaws but it carries forward enough of Star Treks charm into a more accessible narrative medium to entice people like myself who’re easily dissuaded by the original format to appreciate the franchise.
I prefer that in Enterprise it was slow, underpowered, and was running behind on certain tech. The writers made it have a certain amount of realism that other ST series lack. One of the reasons I'm a BSG (remake) fan.
@Andrew Gray yep it was practically on par with they're contemporaries like Vulcans, Andorians ect.. With i think vulcan ships being able to reach warp 6. But another thing i think it outclassed many other ships was its durability. That ship could take a hit and keep going even with inferior tech.
Were the weapons that bad? The original loadout was trash, there's no denying that, the plasma cannons weren't worth their weight, and the spatial torpedoes were a waste of space, but NX-01 upgraded VERY quickly. If there's one thing that humans are good at, it's inventing scarier weapons. While the new phaser cannons were subpar compared to more advanced civilizations with decades of development on them, enemies couldn't ignore them like plasma weapons, and the upgrade to photonic torpedoes made Enterprise, if not the biggest shark in the water, then at least a force to be reckoned with. Honestly, all things being equal, Enterprise seemed to be very good for its time and humanity's development. Most of the ship's design flaws were related to humanity's development at the time, and even with that handicap, NX-01 regularly had to take on bigger, badder, and more experienced enemies, and instead of dying, earned the respect of several regional powers. But....in my opinion, the one area humans blew everyone out of the water in the NX-01 era was in special forces. MACOs thrashed practically everybody they fought, and starfleet security was no pushover either. I know that you're focused on ships and stuff, but is there any way you could do a video on MACOs and their role in the UE and starfleet?
In one of the first episodes one of their torpedoes actually bounced off the other ship. That was hilarious. The look on Archers face was priceless. Well written story.

However, while they weren't quite the "low grade WMD" level of firepower like true photon torpedoes, my point still stands, photonic torpedoes were a massive upgrade over spatial torpedoes, and after the shift, NX-01 finally got some teeth she could sink into her enemies.

I remember reading in an article during the run up to Enterprise in which the production staff wanted the design to resemble a submarine, spartan and claustrophobic.
+Atomic Squid I think this may have been a reference to the DY-100 class (like the SS Botany Bay) or DY-500. This TOS ship (launched late 20th century) resembled a converted submarine hull. DY-500 where launched untill 22th century

What exactly is authoritarian about United Earth? In the Terra Prime arc there is a parliament and cabinet ministers (suggesting some kind of democracy), a journalist looking for a scoop (press freedom), an insane human-first billionaire with a Lunar mining contract (private sector operations).
I think it's that warp drive technology was tightly controlled by a central government, which means that government directly controls all travel, commerce, and academic contact with any other group outside its borders. Now, to be sure, modern countries can decide to forbid trade and travel to or from each other, but they do this through laws and regulations. The United Earth government could do this too, but they take it a big step further: If modern countries were to do things the way the United Earth government does, it would have to do things like destroy international roads and railways, and nationalize any shipyard, aircraft manufacturer, and automaker that made vehicles capable of sailing, flying, or driving to another country. That sounds pretty authoritarian to me.
tba, We don't know UE made the decision to control the Warp 5 Experiment. That could've been a compromise with the Vulcans who didn't want to monitor and assist (and slow down) 50,000 competing endeavors. It's not like USN lets anyone have a nuclear reactor on their yacht. We know from ENT and TNG that there were low warp ships in private hands that acted as colony ships at about this time, Mariposa and Terra Nova.

It's shit, also there is no such thing as "Prime timeline" that was a phase invented to give the Paramount alternate license a false legitimacy as even the scene with spock at the start and all the events leading to the Kelvin timeline are also legally and technically part of the Paramount alternate license and not connected to the actual CBS held copyright of the original series timeline from Kirk to Archer as held by CBS incorporated
yes, Defiant (NX-74205) retained the NX designation until destroyed, long after after the Defiant class entered mass production (we saw at least 5 seporate ships of that class, so Starfleet must have been pushing them out realy fast) with other ships of the class having NCC registration numbers
Terry Forsdyke the Defiant only retained the "NX" prefix since it was too costly to redo all the effects shots and stock footage, especially just for the final episode
We see lots of warp cores outside of starfleet, mainly on Earth Cargo Service vessels. Granted these are only Warp 1 or 2. However, dialogue in Fortunate Son implies that Warp 3 engines are at least available to civilians but are somewhat expensive. Its likely that Warp Cores are extremely costly to develop and make and thus would represent a major investment for any private entity to try and research on their own. More likely the only entity on earth that has the resources to actually develop and produce warp drives is the United Earth Government. Even with Earths resources and the top leading human minds in Warp Theory, it takes decades for Earth to develop a Warp 5 engine.
The reason the freighters have warp 3 or less is the fact that they've developed mass production capabilities for those speeds of engine. One of the problems with the NX Class was that at the time, their drives were hand-built, and in the book series on the Romulan War, you had many Daedalus Class ships with warp 2+ engines (which violates previous cannon of them being post Romulan War) and production on NX Class stopped for the war.
There's also the issue of dilithium crystals. Dilithium mines and issues were only heard of in TOS, so it would be safe to assume that gaining access to scarce resources would be hard (especially if you consider that the Vulcans might have purposefully limited supply to needed resources? Also, production facilities around Earth and Mars would have been in its infancy, and nowhere what it is in the Voyager era, so it would make sense that single digit starship production was the maximum that Earth could manage.
Adriel Cruz To some extent it is. From what the lore suggests, Earth, is set-up as a parliamentary republic. Meaning the people have freedom but only as far as rule of law set forth by the legislature dictate - the people of said governments have a marginal influence in laws that are implemented. Which given, the utopia or likeness the Star Trek universe suggests for the United Earth government, we have to presume it is more lenient than more restrictive authoritarian versions that exist for real in today’s world. Examples of this form of government would be what is set up for Germany or Switzerland with more extreme examples like the governments of Chili or Pakistan, before those parliamentary republics morphed into other forms of government. Chili for example, has since changed to a presidential republic like the United States.

The NX is one of my Favorite looking human vessel from Startreck. There is a science vessel I like that is more of a side ship. I think it's the Nova Class. It's a neat design.
The Franklin is tiny. It is a glorified shuttle. It is only 450 feet long. The NX Enterprise is 738 feet long. The Franklin only has 3 decks, where as the NX has 7 decks. The Franklin is a proof of concept. A means to push the Warp Speed Barrier for Humanity. It is not a ship of the line.
The Franklin, is nothing more than a Scout Ship & although She had 2 Phase Cannons, She only had Spacial Torpedoes, when at the beginning of the UFP, Star Fleet were using Photon(ic) Torpedoes!
That's kind of my head canon, too. I just think that there were several compeating Warp projects within Starfleet or UESPA like the Soviets had in their space programme. You have Henry Archer's ambitious Warp 5 project and another project that thinks Warp 4 is more feasable or perhaps the class of Franklin ships was never meant for deep space exploration but colony support? The Franklin could have gotten it's designation when it was incorporated into the Federation Starfleet (like the USS which it probably didn't have before).
A couple of things. The theme of the show or at least part of the theme was "humans are the new kids on the block and they're the underdogs." The ship was subpar when compared to the Klingon's, Vulcan's etc. That forced the crew of the NX01 to improvise, adapt and overcome. The NX02 aka the Columbia is the culmination of what Star Fleet learned, from the flaws and mistakes of the NX01. That's why it was a much better ship...duh. Its not like they could've retrofitted the NX01 to bring it up to par with the NX02....but they didn't cuz writers. Yeah it was rushed out, and didn't even get a shakedown cruise...tough titty said the kitty when their was no milk. IAO. Crap happens and steel sharpens steel. The US Navy takes older ships, aircraft etc, tears them down, to the basics and retrofits them all of the time. The name of the program for that in regards to ships is "SLEP," Service Life Extension Program. The ship I was stationed went through SLEP, before it sailed to its now port of call which was NAS Coronado. The Vulcan's fear the humans because they were developing so fast, because the humans accomplished in a hundred years what took the Vulcan's, thousands of years to do. On top of that, the Vulcan high command had been infiltrated by the Romulan's and the Romulan's had a vested interest in keeping the humans limited. I personally liked the aesthetics, of the NX01...a lot because it had the feel of a true Naval, vessel. In this case a star ship. Senior officers got their own quarters, though small, junior officers were two or three to a state room, and the Captains was slightly bigger. The enlisted were probably stacked 3 or even four high in massive berthing compartments. You got used to it and dealt. (Of course its F'k the enlisted when it comes to Star Trek.) I was stationed an aircraft carrier, which was big even though it was an older carrier, however it was still cramped to a certain degree, because you do your level best to stuff it with as much stuff as possible. A submarine would follow that principle even more. The old diesel electric subs were super cramped. I also liked the Defiant and other escort ships because they're truer to what a star ship would really be like. No frills, basic accommodations, little personal space. Adversity makes men. If the Navy wanted you to have personal space, they would have issued you some. Yeah the Galaxy class was the love boat that could fire phasers and photon torpedo's. It's a joke, to some extent. The crew makes the ship, give it a personality, and give it life, regardless of how good or bad it is, and not the other way around. The name "Enterprise," would not be the icon that it is, in Starfleet if not for the exceptional crews that manned each iteration of the "Enterprise."
Not with you downing the ship, though. The NX01 wasn't a failure, it was a start and successful in its own right, considering how far the humans went in just a 100 years. Just like the Nautilus was a quantum leap forward from diesel power submarines. Actually the NX01 a huge breakthrough for the humans and they built on and expanded that basic design, as their grasp on science and engineering, expanded.
Talking about the Romulans. In the original Star Trek, it was stated that the Romulans did not have warp drive (Episode Balance of terror). Yet in Enterprise the experimental Romulan drone ships had warp capability. And when Trip and Tucker were on one of the drones they discovered it was made from a Romulan battle cruiser. It was just retrofitted to be pilotless. So in other words, Romulan battle cruisers had warp drive. Say what? That was the big gripe about Enterprise. The timeline inconsistencies. Like when they found Borg on earth stuck in the ice. So Star Fleet knew about the Borg in 2153, but somehow forgot about them until Picard "rediscovered" them?

i liked the JJ-trek. yes it has some issues but at least it feels like star trek, the characters are very much like the ones we know and love, the ship is mostly the same, in fact the only thing i consider a mistake is the timeline plot-holes. he took something old and dusty that we already loved, cleaned it and polished it, gave it some new and awesome CG visuals and did a good job respecting the characters and the true elements that made star trek great, he just made some oversights with the new timeline that ended up causing some wtf's among the hardcore nerds. discovery on the other hand takes the thing we knew and love and is like "hey...you know that classic thing you like...fuck that shit, its all deleted, THIS is how star trek goes, boys" and they completely changed everything in a bad way. huge contradictions and reboots down to the very soul of the klingons. their biology, their history, their mentality, ship design. they basically invented something nothing like the klingons and called them klingons and then boasted that the other thing doesnt count. the main character is a douche and we're supposed to follow and like a traiterous, selfish, warmonger racist who has violent outbursts and literally does everything blatantly agaisnt the vulcan way of life. i mean the first or second episode was called "a vulcan greeting" or something and it pretty much said a pascifistic vegetarian race of emotionless monks say hello by just shooting the fuck out of everything on the assumption it was a threat. humans are now telepathic, vulcans now adopt humans, the whole history of starfleet is fucked and spor drive? how does discovering the universe is full of microscopic mushrooms magically allow teleportation? it makes no sense and it drops one of the most advanced warp systems right in the infancy of star trek, shitting on the entire development of warp travel. there is a difference between rebooting something and trying to take the soul of something loved and keep it what it is while making it shiny and new looking for new audiences while paying homage, versus violating everything it stands for to make your own bullshit and slap someone elses name on it so you can cash in on the brand while shitting on it...-COUGHdisneystarwars-

While the Vulcans may have been protecting us, they did stifle us quite a bit. I think Starfleet would have advanced faster, without them holding us back. I don't see why they couldn't have helped trying to protect us, while at the same time letting us grow and innovate. At any rate, Yes I am glad Starfleet broke away and did its own thing. It is usually through humans going out and learning on their own is how we learn and grow, we need to be allowed to take the steps to move forward, we learn from that, and our pension for survival carries us through. Ultimately, if we are to explore the galaxy, we must do it in our own way. To be strong, and to stand on our own, we must do it our own way. I liked this aspect of the show, Enterprise. It was a good story line to explore. It was humans at its best, forging on, and discovering. Too bad it got shut down, too early IMO, the 5th season was going to be awesome under Manny Coto.
Considering the lifespan difference between Vulcans and Humans, it's simply natural for Humans to be frustrated by the pace mandated by the High Council. Pointy eared motherfuckers can wait twice as long.
The vulcans held humanity back because they were afraid. Humans had just obliterated their homeworld in a nuclear war. They were worried that if Humans gained advanced tech to quickly we would do it again, or worse strike out into the wider galaxy.
I believe the Franklin was rechristened as NX-326 as put into service as a Federation ship. Thus it could have had a life before the UFP as an experimental ship before the Enterprise and not even use the NX numbering - maybe something else. When it was called back into service, that's when it got a new designation.
Also no offense @Lore Reloaded - but you really need to improve your research skills. Lots of information which speak about the fact that the Franklin came before. Rechristening and giving a new number isn't that crazy to believe.
First, Memory Alpha lists the shit as a United Earth and UFP shit. From a timeline perspective, it make sense that a Warp 4 ship would come before a Warp 5. They tested the Warp 2 engine in "First Flight". There are many possible reasons for them to bring a ship back into service. But timeline wise it fits quite well. Changing the registry number becoming a UFP ship isn't a stretch of the imagination.
Memory Alpha isn't actually Alpha Canon. I use them as one of my primary resources but they get things wrong. I'm pretty sure I stated that the Franklin came before the Enterprise, infact stating the enterprise should have a number after the franklin (The NX is one of the few things I'd agree I messed up on, though trek is confusing on that score). And I don't disagree that it's not a stretch - but you're going to say i need to improve my research skills but can't show me alpha canon that i could have researched?
It’s generally assumed that the Franklin is older than the NX-01 due to its lower maximum warp velocity, but what about the fact that it can even manage speeds about warp 3 without a symmetrical warp governor? It could be that the Franklin represents a completely new design for Starfleet warp drives; one which, while initially slower, would eventually become the basis of all warp drives going forward. (Kinda like how electric cars started out much slower than ICE ones, and yet now we have Teslas.)
This enterprise was well done, a pre-kirk ship that looked good on screen but fit continuity. It's gear, size, submarine-feel and trip putting out "about 100 fires" in engineering each day. It was 100 times better than STD.
reminder, the current ICBM warhead in 2019 is around 10 Megatons, an air launches cruise missle can have a 130 Kilotonne warhead, and Fat Man was 8-20 Kilotonne. A torpedo on Enterprise was 13 Kilotonne..,
Alright, to directly answer the questions in the end: Yes, I like the look of the ship. I actually think it looks better than the Constitution-Class, because to me, they always looked... well, frankly, flimsy as hell. And I do believe there was even a time or two, where the nacelles were broken or shot off the main hull. I just don't like the original Constitution, and prefer every following version of it to the original. As for the NX, it's perfectly reflecting the era and climate of its time. Functionality over comfort. (And that honestly makes Phlox's achievements in its sickbay all the more impressive) I don't much care for politics, but while I do agree in that the Vulcans were trying to help, they were as a result responsible for humanity doing what they did with the Enterprise. In the long-term, yes, as it showed the other species humanity's teeth, determination and adaptation in new environments. In the short term, no. Humanity was reckless and could easily have caused Earth's downfall, and humans' extinction. Luckily, things fell into place the right way, with the right people in the right place at the right time.
What I wanted to know is why the ISS NX class ships still were referred to as having only "hull plating" as defense, when the canon of them conquering the majority of the Vulcan civilization means that they would have shields and defensive measures at least equal to those of Vulcan ships. I always thought that the "hull plating" being used in that episode was just a writing thing, but I thought that it would make sense as a secondary defense system after shields are down, given how long the ISS Avenger was fighting rebel forces. Also, how much more powerful do you think the Terran NX class would be? In the intro to "Into a Mirror Darkly", we see one using a single phaser beam to bisect a Xindi Aquatic cruiser, and the ISS Avenger's hull was unfazed by multiple hits from the weapons of the USS Defiant, despite that same ship one-shotting a Kumari earlier.
Sure she wasn't swinging the biggest stick or chucking the biggest rocks, but she was a human ship pushing human boundaries. That meant more than the sum of her parts. The ship itself was as much an accomplishment as anything it acheived.
5:02 You're forgetting that Columbia was going to be an Enterprise clone, but was retro fitted with Enterprise upgrades, stellar data, and also combat data. Columbia had the privilege of learning from every mistake that Enterprise made. The captain even got to see how badly the turmoils of space had affected Archer.
I only assume the Frankly was "re-branded" when the UFP used it. I assume it has a much different ID before. If I remember right, the first sight of the Defiant in DS9 was branded as a NX.
The Defiant remained NX all the way up until it was destroyed, and the replacement ended up being given the same registry number despite previously being NCC-75633, though that was because they reused some effects shots and made sure the registry matched in the new CGI as well. It is interesting, though, that the Defiant was never reclassified to an NCC- registry, since the Excelsior went from being NX-2000 to NCC-2000 when it was introduced to general fleet service. I guess the producers either didn't want to bother changing everything, or they liked the NX.
I was annoyed that ST: Enterprise didn't lead to the "ball" primary hull starships like the Daedalus class that had always been shown as the precursors to the "saucer" type hulls. (Sisco had a model of one in his office)
I really enjoyed this series, it was killed off just as it was getting good. It's quite normal for the first few series to establish the characters sub-plots and arcs.
I also believe that the Andorians would have sided with the pink skins . Captain Archer and Commander Shram, my favorite character, worked together and helped each other often.
If you actually want a good, pre-JJ example of how NX/NCC was supposed to work, look at the Excelsior and Defiant. Both had NX hull numbers, and the later "production" refit of Excelsior (without transwarp drive), got 'promoted' from NX-2000 to NCC-2000. The Defiant stayed NX longer than it should have, logically, but later Defiant class ships got NCC registrations. NX for experimental, NCC for production models.

Great video BUT, a few things. I think the Franklins NX designation makes perfect sence. NX was used for experimental vessels, the Defiant was originally NX as well (NX-74205) when it was sent to DS9. As well as others. (Prometheus - NX-59650, Bradbury - NX-72307, Excelsior - NX-2000 {Later redesignated NCC-2000 after leaving trials}, Galaxy {Prototype ship of the galaxy class} - NX-70637, USS Luna - NX-80101). After a ship leaves experimental status, it is reassigned with NCC for the Star Fleet. NCC stands for Naval Construction Code. Meaning, a ship built off of a pre tested set of plans with no major changes. Now here is the kicker. The Franklin did have a higher number, but starfleet has NEVER been big on numerical progression. (olderships quite frequently designations all over the board). Logically, the Franklin being warp 4, may simply have a higher designation (infact it was given that designation as tribute to Leonard Nimoys Birthday), as it was the 300 and whateverith test platform of the hull or warp 4 engine. There never would have been that many ships, just test platforms. Also the Enterprise was the first warp 5 platform. Thusly 01. Additionally, it was the first interstellar ship, and the pride of Starfleet, again giving it the 01 designation makes sence, especially if its not in use by an active ship. Why Enterprise kept the NX designation? Easy. At the time of its passing from trial status to full starship, there was likely no rule to change starships over to a new designation, same for the Columbia. It, while being based on the same NX platform of the Enterprise, had all new levels of equipment and thusly was not built specifically off of a predesigned blueprint, more of updated blueprints from the NX 01. ***UPDATE*** Upon adding substantial proof of newer ships (as late as the USS Titan) which bore the NX designation, I've come to realize while SOME were redesignated with NCC, not all of the prototype ships were, so even in the 24th century, quite a few ships bore the NX designation for life.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the registry numbers were supposed to be a combination of the ship variant and number of vessels Like (for example) the Constitution Enterprise was Ncc 1701 which theoretically would have been the 17th ship class and the 1st one built after the prototype (Though I'm 100% certain that at some point any such methodology was forgotten and the writers/effects guys just used random numbers in the actal shows)
The Djbz, unfortunately even that system falls apart early in the origional series, as pretty much everyone reading this will know Kirks Enterprise was NCC-1701 NCC 1701 was the second ship in the Constitution class, Constitution was 1700, Constelation was 1017, Excalabur was 1664, Exeter was 1672, Intrepid was 1631, and there were several more ships with 17.. reg numbers. Registry numbers were all over the place, those ships were all the same class as Enterprise so class 17 if that theory is true, but with reg numbers starting with 10, 16 and 17 that completely rules that out. indeed Constalation with the registry number 1017 was the first ship other than Enterprise to show a registry number so unfortunately (much as I would love to have a logical explanation like that) the theory is wrong
Terry Forsdyke The real reason is, of course, there's no real reason. Production considerations (1017 is used because they used an Enterprise kit model and moved the numbers around) and writers just making things up that sort of seem to fit, seeing as it's fiction anyway. But, to retrofit the explanations into the universe, the best I know of for the odd numbering of TOS ships is they had a tradition of keeping the numbers of previous vessels of the same name. Something they carried on with far into the future with a few special names (like Enterprise) Still, there's no real pattern so every attempt to explain it will fall short somewhere.
I like ST:E. My only issue big with the show was the xindi time war that dissappeared and magically reset. The ship, the setting, the underdog tech.. all well done honestly. And the Terran Empire tie in with the TOS Defiant going missing in the Tholian Web episode was a phenomenal tie in IMO. One of myy favorites was in a mirror darkly of all time in trek along with the DS9 tribble tie in besides TOS as a whole.
Just because the Franklin had the Designation "326" that doesn't necessarily mean there had to be 325 ships before it was built. Many versions of that ship could have been on paper before the first weld was eve made physically. Imagine the poor engineering team looking at the "NX 322" Before having to file it as a viable ship, but already obsolete and having to draw up a similar ship but now with three new decks to house some new tech that was "just now" cutting edge. Those previous blueprint designations dont just go away Just because the vessel was never built. There is no continuity issue with the Franklin - just a bunch of ships that were on paper - that were completely viable and space worthy - never got built. Perfect Example : The Lockheed "L-133" was an Airplane that never left the drawing board STILL has the Designation "L-133" the "L-1101" Stargazer did manage to fly, but even had it not - the L-1101 would have forever been sealed to that blueprint. Hateful Trekkie's trying to punch holes in everything they can because they hate their own Genre is what you have here. Not a continuity error.

Well IDK about the 320 something ships before Franklin but the Enterprise is the first NX-Class ship not nessicarilly the first ship with the designation NX. Then again on the number of ships, for whatever reason 320 some ships is being seen as alot, it really isn't. There are 300 ships in the U.S. Navy and that's just one country on one planet, not to mention hundreds of Federarion Planets. So Idk how the 74000 ships before Voyage cant include 300 before Enterprise was launched

The "Prime" timeline in the JJ movies is ALSO part of the kelvin timeline, it is an alternate to the true "Canon" timeline of the CBS copyright and NOT part of actual standard canon, this is due to the alternate license held by Paramount, owned by Viacom, former owner of CBS now owned by CBS Incorporated, both held by the same majority stock holder (Who is Shari Redstone at this time if I'm not mistaken but who's father Sumner Redstone formerly held control) So you cannot take ANYTHING from the Paramount movies aka the JJ movies, as TRUE canon. The only reason the "Prime" timeline phrase exists is to give the JJ films a false appearance of legitimacy as the alternate license held by Paramount was made with the explicit deal to this effect and that CBS would not make any Star Trek for 5 years, that is why Star Trek Discovery is ALSO made under the paramount license and NOT the CBS license leading to to the tonal and visual similarity to the JJ films. As the alternate license dictates that the Paramount "Star Trek" differ from the CBS Star Trek by "20%". FYI it's looking like Shari Redstone intends to push Paramount and CBS back under a single corporation ASAP thus reversing her fathers split of Viacom many years ago. This means that Paramount and CBS will both have access to the standard canon license and we MAY see actual good shows come from it. PS: The new picard show is also a Paramount alternate license and as such is not standard AKA first canon.

When I first seen this ship in TV guide and then in the show I hated it. However now that I have seen the whole show a few times I have gone on to really like the simple design of the NX class
The NX-01 was a beautiful ship, but it was a miracle the 1st crew survived in space at all. To elaborate: I completely agree - humans were NOT prepared for what lay before them in deep space. They weren't prepared mentally and their ship was woefully under-equipped to handle the rigors of going where a Warp 5 ship could take them. I loved that about the show. They took an awful beating episode after episode and it was a miracle they made it back to earth for a retrofit just so they could get back out there and take another beating. And a lot of humans did not make it back from Enterprise missions. But that's what make humans and the NX-01 itself exceptional. Yeah it wasn't prepared but damnit it kept on going, and honestly that ship had no right to even limp its way back to earth after the pounding it took. The battle with the Xindi that literally put holes in the NX-01 gives me anxiety every time I look at it. There's no way that ship shouldn't have just fallen to pieces. But it made it back. Tough little bastard. Just like humans, hopefully.
Um, I just wanted to point out that the Defiant and Prometheus (both experimental and the first in their classes), have the NX registration. My theory is that the Franklin was also experimental and one of the first in its class. Memory Alpha would seem to support this as well, since it lists the Franklin as a Freedom Class, not NX. I think the Franklin was one of the prototypes of the Freedom Class, which would make more sense continuity-wise.
This ship is my favourite Star Fleet ship. The design just feels so much more realistic than all the other Starfleet ships. The Enterprise (NCC-1701 and A) just hasn't aged well at all making it completely unrealistic. The NCC-1701-D is basically a cruise ship making it completely unrealistic. DS9 is Cardissian, Defiant is too cramped, (personally I feel like as humans we need our space and so this would be taken into account), and Voyager is a Military cruise ship. The NX-01 just feels and looks the most realistic and it also seems like a ship you could serve on.

re: the Defiant... have you seen the inside of military submarines? The Defiant is downright spacious in comparison. Nobody’s gonna suffocate on the Defiant. Also, the TMP Enterprise has aged beautifully. It’s basically Starfleet perfection.
NCC 1701 was so dated and everything else people say, yet the US Navy was considering a study to see if the bridge configuration could work on Navy ships. The NCC 1701 and the refit are classic designs and I still can't believe some find her "dated", "ugly", "retro". She defined the look of ships in Star Trek, every ship comes from her design of saucer/secondary hull/warp engines and pylons. Now, the Daedalus class is ugly and retro.
The exterior of the Constitution is a beauty, graceful and birdlike. The interior, though--come on. Even in the 60s, no one could have believed that the future would look like that.

According to the (lazy) explanation from the creators, the Franklin was originally built before the enterprise but was a slower ship with a different designation. It was rebuilt and redesignated either during the Romulan war or after the Federation was founded (exact timing unclear) as a stopgap measure to fill out a new Federation Starfleet responsible for covering a much larger territory then was possible with just newly constructed ships, where the NX designation continued to be used across the various vessels for a time before the NCC was eventually adopted. These high-number NX ships also included a portion of Tellarite, Vulcan, and Andorian vessels. The entire line was generally a quantity-over-quality measure for the new alliance and the ships were phased out as the Federation got up to speed making their own ships. All of this, has, of course, not been mentioned anywhere in the actual shows or movies.
Nx is also a designation for experimental craft.(IE: NX Defiant in the DS9 Mirror Universe Episode) The Franklin in a Freedom class, not an NX class. It was redesignated the a new number and out back into service before dissapearing in the prime timeline.

Personally, I loved that the hero ship of ST: ENT was underpowered for the vessels of her era. She got stronger in the last two seasons with the addition of photon(ic) torpedoes and enhanced hull plating, but she was still no match for typical alien ships. The NX-01 being an underdog like that really endeared her to me.
I must admit, I was very nearly turned off by the first 2 seasons of Enterprise (not because of the ship). However seasons 3 and 4, sans the ending, really were excellent 'Trek. I definitely agree that the tenacity of the crew and the underdog status of the NX-01 was a large factor in that.
@@ChromeDrakeGaming They eventually got energy shields as well. Which helped in combat yes but also fixed one of the biggest issues they had early on. Polarized Hull plating doesn't stop transporters. They crew on more than one occasion had issues with people being abducted or having supplies stolen simply by a ship flying up beside them and transporting people/supplies right off the ship then flying away.

I think the thing that made Enterprise so durable was its design and redundancies. It could take a pounding, look like shit, but still run reasonably well. Only the warp drive was fragile, everything else on the ship seemed able to take direct hits repeatedly without coming apart.
A deserved underdog. Instead of 'top of the line flagship'. Yes still out done by anyone and everyone. Yes.
I like the NX 01. She's always over worked, under powered and out gunned. Yet she takes a beating and wont go down without a fight. The way the show was written it showed the crew to know how to sqeeze every last ounce out of her only to find out she had something in reserve

Worthy of the name Enterprise....but than again considering it was the first Enterprise that went into deep space it is more fitting to say...the constitution class NCC-1701...was the one worthy of bearing the name of thise Ship. Same goes for the C and D...the A on the other hand....yeah...not so much....and the B...well i bet it would have been worthy of the name;..if it have been Tuesday.

Those qualities and traits found in the NX Class Starship, are a reflection have humans, and ultimately lead the other species of the Galaxy that valued freedom equality and Liberty Above All Else to join with humans to form both the Coalition of planets and ultimately the Federation. The annex class was unlike anything other species has ever seen before. Sure it was primitive, horribly under powered and under gunned, and likely held together with spit and baling wire. But it was that Never Say Die attitude that you alluded to that led the other species to respect and admire Humanity, to see them more name the Primitive barbarians that they first appeared to be, and ultimately lead the other species 2, at the very least listen the humanities idea about bringing all the like-minded Allies together to form a permanent Alliance or Star Nation that would balance out Klingon Empire and the Romulan star Empire.
We can say one thing though, the NX-01 was built to last, the beating that ship took in the entire series and could still be refitted in a testament to to Earth's build quality even with less advanced technology and defensive systems.
I would argue it was BECAUSE of the less advanced technology that it was tougher. They couldn't as easily mass produce ship parts or get them to the ship as they could later when the Federation was a thing. It had to be built to last.
The 4th season of Enterprise is some of the finest Star trek ever made. Hate it if you want but those are some excellent episodes!
I agree. They found their niche and it fit. If they had avoided the whole xindi time war and time police nonsense I think they would've had their 7 year run.

It would have been better if during the 4th season they continued the Romulan storyline leading up into the Earth Romulan War, instead of doing the Mirror Universe Episodes and going into the whole Terra Prime BS.....

The Xindi/Time War stuff was bad - it's such a shame they didn't focus more on early interaction with the Klingons, Romulans and the formation of the Federation. Shran and the Andorian/Vulcan interactions were the best parts of the whole series and they really worked.

I remember reading a TV guide write up on Enterprise before it was released. They said the US Navy helped with designing the ship. They wanted to make it as much like a submarine as possible.

I loved the very basic level of technologies in Enterprise. The NX01 didn't have the insane super God-Like tech from other shows. We didn't have dialogue like:
"Captain, we seem to have entered a pocket of subspace and it's beginning to crush the hull."
"Use an inverse tachyon desplicer to reharmonize the subspace quantum fissure and disentangle the particle flow of normal space time."
"It worked. We're free."

I completely disagree with your title. The NX was not humanity's failure. It was humanity's claim to the stars. It was our time to get out from under the wing of the Vulcans and shine as who we are. The Vulcans learned a lesson from the events of Enterprise. We are much more adaptable then they thought. I think this stems from the difference in the lifespans of the two species. Im sure that the lack of emotions has a lot to do with this as well. While the Vulcans saw potential in our species, the Andorians saw OUR potential. I believe that fact is a large part of what made the Andorians more friendly to us. My fandom of Star Trek starts in the days of the TOS., I always liked the Andorians, and didn't care much for the Vulcans. I never really understood this until I watched the enterprise show. No matter what anyone says, we are fighters. We always have been and we will always will be. We just need to be provoked first. Remember the old saying, don't push the Pinkskins to the ice.

To possibly explain the Franklin's designation, NX designations are almost entirely experimental (see NX 2000). If a ship fails its test, its problem is either corrected for continued tests, or is commissioned as an NCC designation ship, keeping the serial. If a ship is decommissioned, destroyed, or re-purposed, the next ship may be named in recurring numerical order. Simply because a ship holds the designation serial of 326, doesn't mean that 326 working ships are present, simply that the ship is test variant 326. Look at it kind of like an experiment number. Some serial designations may be thrown out before production even begins etc.

We don't know if the NX-2000 failed. As we know, the first "transwarp" experiment may have been what gave us the TNG warp scale.
Another word on registry numbers. My personal take is that it works like this. When a new starship class is approved an initial bloc of consecutive registry numbers is set aside for the class. If the class is a "flop" it may never get past that initial bloc of numbers. But if it's a success, like the Miranda or the Oberth, then subsequent ships built after the exhaustion of those initial numbers just get assigned some random number. This theory can explain both close and widely variant registry numbers for the same class of ship.
This was a very underrated show among Trek purists. As a fan since 1976, I for one was pleased they addressed the pre-Kirk and Spock era. And Scott Bakula was great in this role.
The ship itself fit this time and was well thought out. Even the actors of later series’ were jealous of the jumpsuits Enterprise people got to wear.

I've recently been watching Trek for the first time in chronological order. I started with Enterprise. I liked the show. Kinda corny but very enjoyable. The uniforms look great and familiar to something we might wear.
I was pleasantly surprised when the uniform made a return in TOS episode Metamorphosis. Cochrane was wearing the same jumpsuit. "So that's where they derived it from!"

Prequels we’re all (and still kind of are) the rage back then.
The series had potential but they really squandered a lot of it in a way worse than they did Voyager.
Selling a prequel is always tough because as an audience we generally know the outcome. Thus, the writers need to deliver that outcome in an interesting way whilst respecting Canon.
And if you can’t do that, you just claim everything is an in documented experiment and travel 3,000 years into the future.
And you get the mess that is Discovery
the NX-02 could not have become what it was without the NX-01, and that's one of the things I loved about Enterprise, Every answer they came up with was genuinely new and on the fly, and while doing so didn't step on the timeline like a certain other show...
Kirk, Picard, Janeway All could build upon knowledges gained all the way back to the NX-01 and even more so because of the Federation background,
I love how the show explained how red alert became to be a thing. The crew was completely out of their minds because of a black hole and Reed was going psycho over his (and I love how Tucker puts it) "Reed alert".

Fact is, later while sneeking through the mide of hell, the Red alert protocoll saved the ship, so yes, Rees was maniac about his project, but the project had it's worth. No matter how it was implemented, not even what it was implemented against Captain Orders, it proved it's worth and got accepted by the Captain and later the fleet, cause it makes sense.

The fact that it was so underdeveloped and hilariously out classed is what makes it my favorite. The NX Enterprise is a brilliant light that cuts through the vast, daunting depths of space. It is the very definition of the human spirit and I love it. I love the Enterprise series because, frankly; I love an underdog. Who doesn’t?

The NX-01 is the most believable warp powered human vessel ever created. Enterprise was so underrated as a series in general. I didn't appreciate it at the time but I do now. And I actually liked the opening song too.
as a show Enterprise was good, love the cast, love the ship and all the tension, suspense, drama action etc was great, I just wish they could have done the 5'th season as planned but at least Andromeda and Babylon 5 made it 5 years, those were really good shows too....

Some old sources say NCC means Naval Construction Contract. Others vaguely suggest old class names were combinations of letters, so might be an NV-class fro the 22nd century Intrepid say.
The NX-01 is one of my favorites aesthetically. I love the way that it looks less futuristic than some of the other ships, and more like I'd imagine a starship if we built it _now_ [with the exception of all the 4:3 displays... that's just _weird_ man]
I love that it shares a lot of the most iconic components of the NCC-1701 -- the nacelle configuration, having a saucer section... but it has a more unique layout. The deflector dish is another nice detail -- it's inspired by the original, but it's not just a copy. The fact that the warp reactor was horizontal instead of vertical was also another nice design choice to jive with the original series.

This is not just something in Science fiction. The same is true of just about every "first" in history. The first is usually carried out with a lot less information than later ventures, so one would expect later ventures to be more successful than maiden voyages.
Exactly, the worlds first jet airliner suffered multiple catastrophic failures due to metal fatigue because of lack of information to realise that maybe square cornered windows on a pressure vessel were not such a great idea just as an example.
Yeah, in fact did you know that for the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon the astronauts were told that there wasn’t enough data known to determine how durable the space suits used were? The scientists were so scared that falling over could doom the men to slowly die of suffocation because they couldn’t get back up, would damage the sealing of the suit. That’s one of the reasons the flag was planted so close to the shuttle. Anything to far from the landing craft was considered too risky. It wasn’t until they examined the suits after the mission’s return to Earth that it was found they could get a little banged up on the lunar surface.

What I like about the NX-01 is that they really took a Naval approach on the ship as it did indeed remind me of a sub that's caught between something just after WW2 and what most modern subs today look like - half old tech married to new tech. It really had the "cobbled together" feel that had none of the refinements that became the general aesthetics of future Federation ships. The uniforms were definitely a nod to some of the blue casual flight jumpsuits worn by NASA astronauts - something not many people may have realized back then. The best comparison for me about the NX-01 is the Serenity from Firefly - both have a "rustic" semi-industrial look to them.
To be fair though; by the time TNG rolled around, Starfleet wasn't just a human-run agency anymore and had the combined shipbuilding knowledge of its member races at their beck and call. The NX-01 Enterprise was basically an UNTESTED prototype that launched early to prove themselves. It was inadequate, underpowered, and very overworked - but at the same time, any lessons learned during that ship's run was used to further their tech. In essence, they were basically guinea pigs for what was to come - and therefore, true pioneers. They were the frontiersmen that gave birth to Kirk's Wild West Captaincy.
Enterprise had an entire episode in season 1 where the helm officer goes back to his father's private cargo ship that us warp capable
@Robertson Thirdly True, Warp 5 engines I believe were limited to the test vehicles and the NX-Enterprise. I don't think Starfleet had anything else that was capable of warp 5, at least nothing else officially. Section 31 still got around the galaxy through so, perhaps unofficially their was a cargo ship fitted with warp 5 engines.
I disagree with you about the NX series being a human failure. I liked very much the Enterprise series and how it shows the development of both starship and crew. It was a prototype, the first ship with a 5 warp engine and it was our first serious step into the galaxy and other civilizations. Logically it was weak and small but by the end of the series it is impossible not to feel proud for this sturdy and fiercely stubborn starship. Long be remembered the first Enterprise!

Despite what most Trek fans say of the Enterprise Show as a whole, I actually thought it was decent and I've enjoyed it and Yes, it did have a lot to do with the ship being so...pragmatic looking then say, next generation which looked like a living room movie theater with fancy looking couches for people preparing to watch Starwars : A New Hope.

The last season of Enterprise after they fired the clowns writing was where the true light of the shows potential shined. Too bad back in the day, it wasn't really pushed to the fans and everyone still thought the show was trash and came back to turned in. If they came out of the gate with Season 4, first, it could of been the best Star Treks... and ....... Faith of the Heart was fine for the debut episode to go "look".... but not as a series opener for every episode.

I love the NX-01 for how inadequate it is. Humanity is taking its first real steps into galactic space and politics, so they try their best. That best fall far short of existing powers, and it shows, but the ship and crew get better with time.

Things like the polarized hull plating might have been unexceptional (and almost laughable at times), but that was the point - the Vulcans were holding humanity back technologically, so of course Earth ships were lagging behind the major powers in the region when they first really started out.

Great video! I liked the NX-01 immensely because it took visual cues from Los Angeles class attack submarines in the US Navy. Even the conversion of the crew's mess into a "theater" is taken from submarine life.
Absolutely! and it was the perfect nod to how an Earth ship would be built.
What I also thought was neat about the show was the suggestion, through set design, that a LOT of what went into the original NCC-1701's bridge design came from the Andorian ships. Shran's cruiser's bridge had some interesting design elements that reminded me of Pike's bridge.

@ajs1031... Berman, Braga and company toured a 688 class submarine in prep for ST: ENT and, to my knowledge, no other naval vessels. So they got it from submarine life, not merely Navy life.

Yes. It was..it did what it was supposed to do and it helped Starfleet expand its reach. It wasn’t perfect but it worked despite not getting a lot of help from the Vulcans. It was successful because of the results.
I guess it all depends on your definition of success. It was Earth's first foray into truly deep space exploration. To expect it to outclass ships whose builders had been doing that for centuries before humanity made its appearance seems a bit unrealistic really.

Uh no you don’t speak for everyone, if it wasn’t for the kelvin timeline I would have never gotten into Star Trek period. I would have never watched TOS, TNG, DS9 or Enterprise as I have now, so no. You don’t speak for everyone, it has its flaws but it carries forward enough of Star Treks charm into a more accessible narrative medium to entice people like myself who’re easily dissuaded by the original format to appreciate the franchise.

I prefer that in Enterprise it was slow, underpowered, and was running behind on certain tech. The writers made it have a certain amount of realism that other ST series lack. One of the reasons I'm a BSG (remake) fan.

@Andrew Gray yep it was practically on par with they're contemporaries like Vulcans, Andorians ect.. With i think vulcan ships being able to reach warp 6. But another thing i think it outclassed many other ships was its durability. That ship could take a hit and keep going even with inferior tech.
Were the weapons that bad? The original loadout was trash, there's no denying that, the plasma cannons weren't worth their weight, and the spatial torpedoes were a waste of space, but NX-01 upgraded VERY quickly. If there's one thing that humans are good at, it's inventing scarier weapons. While the new phaser cannons were subpar compared to more advanced civilizations with decades of development on them, enemies couldn't ignore them like plasma weapons, and the upgrade to photonic torpedoes made Enterprise, if not the biggest shark in the water, then at least a force to be reckoned with.
Honestly, all things being equal, Enterprise seemed to be very good for its time and humanity's development. Most of the ship's design flaws were related to humanity's development at the time, and even with that handicap, NX-01 regularly had to take on bigger, badder, and more experienced enemies, and instead of dying, earned the respect of several regional powers.
But....in my opinion, the one area humans blew everyone out of the water in the NX-01 era was in special forces. MACOs thrashed practically everybody they fought, and starfleet security was no pushover either. I know that you're focused on ships and stuff, but is there any way you could do a video on MACOs and their role in the UE and starfleet?
In one of the first episodes one of their torpedoes actually bounced off the other ship. That was hilarious. The look on Archers face was priceless. Well written story.

However, while they weren't quite the "low grade WMD" level of firepower like true photon torpedoes, my point still stands, photonic torpedoes were a massive upgrade over spatial torpedoes, and after the shift, NX-01 finally got some teeth she could sink into her enemies.

What exactly is authoritarian about United Earth? In the Terra Prime arc there is a parliament and cabinet ministers (suggesting some kind of democracy), a journalist looking for a scoop (press freedom), an insane human-first billionaire with a Lunar mining contract (private sector operations).

I think it's that warp drive technology was tightly controlled by a central government, which means that government directly controls all travel, commerce, and academic contact with any other group outside its borders. Now, to be sure, modern countries can decide to forbid trade and travel to or from each other, but they do this through laws and regulations. The United Earth government could do this too, but they take it a big step further: If modern countries were to do things the way the United Earth government does, it would have to do things like destroy international roads and railways, and nationalize any shipyard, aircraft manufacturer, and automaker that made vehicles capable of sailing, flying, or driving to another country. That sounds pretty authoritarian to me.
tba, We don't know UE made the decision to control the Warp 5 Experiment. That could've been a compromise with the Vulcans who didn't want to monitor and assist (and slow down) 50,000 competing endeavors. It's not like USN lets anyone have a nuclear reactor on their yacht.
We know from ENT and TNG that there were low warp ships in private hands that acted as colony ships at about this time, Mariposa and Terra Nova.

yes, Defiant (NX-74205) retained the NX designation until destroyed, long after after the Defiant class entered mass production (we saw at least 5 seporate ships of that class, so Starfleet must have been pushing them out realy fast) with other ships of the class having NCC registration numbers
The Prometheus even had two separate numbers (you can just see NCC-74913 on the dedication plaque)

We see lots of warp cores outside of starfleet, mainly on Earth Cargo Service vessels. Granted these are only Warp 1 or 2. However, dialogue in Fortunate Son implies that Warp 3 engines are at least available to civilians but are somewhat expensive. Its likely that Warp Cores are extremely costly to develop and make and thus would represent a major investment for any private entity to try and research on their own. More likely the only entity on earth that has the resources to actually develop and produce warp drives is the United Earth Government. Even with Earths resources and the top leading human minds in Warp Theory, it takes decades for Earth to develop a Warp 5 engine.

The idea that warp 2 was broken so recently is kind of awkward for some writers, I'd have thought.
The reason the freighters have warp 3 or less is the fact that they've developed mass production capabilities for those speeds of engine. One of the problems with the NX Class was that at the time, their drives were hand-built, and in the book series on the Romulan War, you had many Daedalus Class ships with warp 2+ engines (which violates previous cannon of them being post Romulan War) and production on NX Class stopped for the war.
There's also the issue of dilithium crystals. Dilithium mines and issues were only heard of in TOS, so it would be safe to assume that gaining access to scarce resources would be hard (especially if you consider that the Vulcans might have purposefully limited supply to needed resources? Also, production facilities around Earth and Mars would have been in its infancy, and nowhere what it is in the Voyager era, so it would make sense that single digit starship production was the maximum that Earth could manage.

Adriel Cruz To some extent it is. From what the lore suggests, Earth, is set-up as a parliamentary republic. Meaning the people have freedom but only as far as rule of law set forth by the legislature dictate - the people of said governments have a marginal influence in laws that are implemented. Which given, the utopia or likeness the Star Trek universe suggests for the United Earth government, we have to presume it is more lenient than more restrictive authoritarian versions that exist for real in today’s world. Examples of this form of government would be what is set up for Germany or Switzerland with more extreme examples like the governments of Chili or Pakistan, before those parliamentary republics morphed into other forms of government. Chili for example, has since changed to a presidential republic like the United States.

The NX is one of my Favorite looking human vessel from Startreck. There is a science vessel I like that is more of a side ship. I think it's the Nova Class. It's a neat design.

The Franklin is tiny. It is a glorified shuttle. It is only 450 feet long. The NX Enterprise is 738 feet long. The Franklin only has 3 decks, where as the NX has 7 decks.
The Franklin is a proof of concept. A means to push the Warp Speed Barrier for Humanity. It is not a ship of the line.
The Franklin, is nothing more than a Scout Ship & although She had 2 Phase Cannons, She only had Spacial Torpedoes, when at the beginning of the UFP, Star Fleet were using Photon(ic) Torpedoes!
That's kind of my head canon, too. I just think that there were several compeating Warp projects within Starfleet or UESPA like the Soviets had in their space programme. You have Henry Archer's ambitious Warp 5 project and another project that thinks Warp 4 is more feasable or perhaps the class of Franklin ships was never meant for deep space exploration but colony support? The Franklin could have gotten it's designation when it was incorporated into the Federation Starfleet (like the USS which it probably didn't have before).
The NX class was 225 feet long. The freedom class (which the USS franklin belongs too) was smaller.

A couple of things. The theme of the show or at least part of the theme was "humans are the new kids on the block and they're the underdogs." The ship was subpar when compared to the Klingon's, Vulcan's etc. That forced the crew of the NX01 to improvise, adapt and overcome. The NX02 aka the Columbia is the culmination of what Star Fleet learned, from the flaws and mistakes of the NX01. That's why it was a much better ship...duh. Its not like they could've retrofitted the NX01 to bring it up to par with the NX02....but they didn't cuz writers. Yeah it was rushed out, and didn't even get a shakedown cruise...tough titty said the kitty when their was no milk. IAO. Crap happens and steel sharpens steel. The US Navy takes older ships, aircraft etc, tears them down, to the basics and retrofits them all of the time. The name of the program for that in regards to ships is "SLEP," Service Life Extension Program. The ship I was stationed went through SLEP, before it sailed to its now port of call which was NAS Coronado.
The Vulcan's fear the humans because they were developing so fast, because the humans accomplished in a hundred years what took the Vulcan's, thousands of years to do. On top of that, the Vulcan high command had been infiltrated by the Romulan's and the Romulan's had a vested interest in keeping the humans limited.
I personally liked the aesthetics, of the NX01...a lot because it had the feel of a true Naval, vessel. In this case a star ship. Senior officers got their own quarters, though small, junior officers were two or three to a state room, and the Captains was slightly bigger. The enlisted were probably stacked 3 or even four high in massive berthing compartments. You got used to it and dealt. (Of course its F'k the enlisted when it comes to Star Trek.) I was stationed an aircraft carrier, which was big even though it was an older carrier, however it was still cramped to a certain degree, because you do your level best to stuff it with as much stuff as possible. A submarine would follow that principle even more. The old diesel electric subs were super cramped. I also liked the Defiant and other escort ships because they're truer to what a star ship would really be like. No frills, basic accommodations, little personal space. Adversity makes men. If the Navy wanted you to have personal space, they would have issued you some. Yeah the Galaxy class was the love boat that could fire phasers and photon torpedo's. It's a joke, to some extent.
The crew makes the ship, give it a personality, and give it life, regardless of how good or bad it is, and not the other way around. The name "Enterprise," would not be the icon that it is, in Starfleet if not for the exceptional crews that manned each iteration of the "Enterprise."

Not with you downing the ship, though. The NX01 wasn't a failure, it was a start and successful in its own right, considering how far the humans went in just a 100 years. Just like the Nautilus was a quantum leap forward from diesel power submarines. Actually the NX01 a huge breakthrough for the humans and they built on and expanded that basic design, as their grasp on science and engineering, expanded.

Talking about the Romulans. In the original Star Trek, it was stated that the Romulans did not have warp drive (Episode Balance of terror). Yet in Enterprise the experimental Romulan drone ships had warp capability. And when Trip and Tucker were on one of the drones they discovered it was made from a Romulan battle cruiser. It was just retrofitted to be pilotless. So in other words, Romulan battle cruisers had warp drive. Say what? That was the big gripe about Enterprise. The timeline inconsistencies. Like when they found Borg on earth stuck in the ice. So Star Fleet knew about the Borg in 2153, but somehow forgot about them until Picard "rediscovered" them?

i liked the JJ-trek. yes it has some issues but at least it feels like star trek, the characters are very much like the ones we know and love, the ship is mostly the same, in fact the only thing i consider a mistake is the timeline plot-holes. he took something old and dusty that we already loved, cleaned it and polished it, gave it some new and awesome CG visuals and did a good job respecting the characters and the true elements that made star trek great, he just made some oversights with the new timeline that ended up causing some wtf's among the hardcore nerds. discovery on the other hand takes the thing we knew and love and is like "hey...you know that classic thing you like...fuck that shit, its all deleted, THIS is how star trek goes, boys" and they completely changed everything in a bad way. huge contradictions and reboots down to the very soul of the klingons. their biology, their history, their mentality, ship design. they basically invented something nothing like the klingons and called them klingons and then boasted that the other thing doesnt count. the main character is a douche and we're supposed to follow and like a traiterous, selfish, warmonger racist who has violent outbursts and literally does everything blatantly agaisnt the vulcan way of life. i mean the first or second episode was called "a vulcan greeting" or something and it pretty much said a pascifistic vegetarian race of emotionless monks say hello by just shooting the fuck out of everything on the assumption it was a threat. humans are now telepathic, vulcans now adopt humans, the whole history of starfleet is fucked and spor drive? how does discovering the universe is full of microscopic mushrooms magically allow teleportation? it makes no sense and it drops one of the most advanced warp systems right in the infancy of star trek, shitting on the entire development of warp travel. there is a difference between rebooting something and trying to take the soul of something loved and keep it what it is while making it shiny and new looking for new audiences while paying homage, versus violating everything it stands for to make your own bullshit and slap someone elses name on it so you can cash in on the brand while shitting on it...-COUGHdisneystarwars-

While the Vulcans may have been protecting us, they did stifle us quite a bit. I think Starfleet would have advanced faster, without them holding us back. I don't see why they couldn't have helped trying to protect us, while at the same time letting us grow and innovate. At any rate, Yes I am glad Starfleet broke away and did its own thing. It is usually through humans going out and learning on their own is how we learn and grow, we need to be allowed to take the steps to move forward, we learn from that, and our pension for survival carries us through. Ultimately, if we are to explore the galaxy, we must do it in our own way. To be strong, and to stand on our own, we must do it our own way. I liked this aspect of the show, Enterprise. It was a good story line to explore. It was humans at its best, forging on, and discovering. Too bad it got shut down, too early IMO, the 5th season was going to be awesome under Manny Coto.

I believe the Franklin was rechristened as NX-326 as put into service as a Federation ship. Thus it could have had a life before the UFP as an experimental ship before the Enterprise and not even use the NX numbering - maybe something else. When it was called back into service, that's when it got a new designation.
Also no offense @Lore Reloaded - but you really need to improve your research skills. Lots of information which speak about the fact that the Franklin came before. Rechristening and giving a new number isn't that crazy to believe.

First, Memory Alpha lists the shit as a United Earth and UFP shit. From a timeline perspective, it make sense that a Warp 4 ship would come before a Warp 5. They tested the Warp 2 engine in "First Flight". There are many possible reasons for them to bring a ship back into service. But timeline wise it fits quite well. Changing the registry number becoming a UFP ship isn't a stretch of the imagination.
Memory Alpha isn't actually Alpha Canon. I use them as one of my primary resources but they get things wrong. I'm pretty sure I stated that the Franklin came before the Enterprise, infact stating the enterprise should have a number after the franklin (The NX is one of the few things I'd agree I messed up on, though trek is confusing on that score). And I don't disagree that it's not a stretch - but you're going to say i need to improve my research skills but can't show me alpha canon that i could have researched?
It’s generally assumed that the Franklin is older than the NX-01 due to its lower maximum warp velocity, but what about the fact that it can even manage speeds about warp 3 without a symmetrical warp governor? It could be that the Franklin represents a completely new design for Starfleet warp drives; one which, while initially slower, would eventually become the basis of all warp drives going forward. (Kinda like how electric cars started out much slower than ICE ones, and yet now we have Teslas.)

This enterprise was well done, a pre-kirk ship that looked good on screen but fit continuity. It's gear, size, submarine-feel and trip putting out "about 100 fires" in engineering each day. It was 100 times better than STD.
reminder, the current ICBM warhead in 2019 is around 10 Megatons, an air launches cruise missle can have a 130 Kilotonne warhead, and Fat Man was 8-20 Kilotonne. A torpedo on Enterprise was 13 Kilotonne..,

Alright, to directly answer the questions in the end:
Yes, I like the look of the ship. I actually think it looks better than the Constitution-Class, because to me, they always looked... well, frankly, flimsy as hell. And I do believe there was even a time or two, where the nacelles were broken or shot off the main hull. I just don't like the original Constitution, and prefer every following version of it to the original. As for the NX, it's perfectly reflecting the era and climate of its time. Functionality over comfort. (And that honestly makes Phlox's achievements in its sickbay all the more impressive)
I don't much care for politics, but while I do agree in that the Vulcans were trying to help, they were as a result responsible for humanity doing what they did with the Enterprise.
In the long-term, yes, as it showed the other species humanity's teeth, determination and adaptation in new environments. In the short term, no. Humanity was reckless and could easily have caused Earth's downfall, and humans' extinction. Luckily, things fell into place the right way, with the right people in the right place at the right time.
What I wanted to know is why the ISS NX class ships still were referred to as having only "hull plating" as defense, when the canon of them conquering the majority of the Vulcan civilization means that they would have shields and defensive measures at least equal to those of Vulcan ships. I always thought that the "hull plating" being used in that episode was just a writing thing, but I thought that it would make sense as a secondary defense system after shields are down, given how long the ISS Avenger was fighting rebel forces.
Also, how much more powerful do you think the Terran NX class would be? In the intro to "Into a Mirror Darkly", we see one using a single phaser beam to bisect a Xindi Aquatic cruiser, and the ISS Avenger's hull was unfazed by multiple hits from the weapons of the USS Defiant, despite that same ship one-shotting a Kumari earlier.
The U.S.S Franklin was a ship that was put into Mothballs after its test of Warp 4 but it would be brought back in the Romulan War
Sure she wasn't swinging the biggest stick or chucking the biggest rocks, but she was a human ship pushing human boundaries. That meant more than the sum of her parts. The ship itself was as much an accomplishment as anything it acheived.

You're forgetting that Columbia was going to be an Enterprise clone, but was retro fitted with Enterprise upgrades, stellar data, and also combat data.
Columbia had the privilege of learning from every mistake that Enterprise made.

If I remember right, the first sight of the Defiant in DS9 was branded as a NX.
The Defiant remained NX all the way up until it was destroyed, and the replacement ended up being given the same registry number despite previously being NCC-75633, though that was because they reused some effects shots and made sure the registry matched in the new CGI as well.
It is interesting, though, that the Defiant was never reclassified to an NCC- registry, since the Excelsior went from being NX-2000 to NCC-2000 when it was introduced to general fleet service. I guess the producers either didn't want to bother changing everything, or they liked the NX.
I was annoyed that ST: Enterprise didn't lead to the "ball" primary hull starships like the Daedalus class that had always been shown as the precursors to the "saucer" type hulls. (Sisco had a model of one in his office)
I really enjoyed this series, it was killed off just as it was getting good. It's quite normal for the first few series to establish the characters sub-plots and arcs.
I also believe that the Andorians would have sided with the pink skins . Captain Archer and Commander Shram, my favorite character, worked together and helped each other often.
If you actually want a good, pre-JJ example of how NX/NCC was supposed to work, look at the Excelsior and Defiant. Both had NX hull numbers, and the later "production" refit of Excelsior (without transwarp drive), got 'promoted' from NX-2000 to NCC-2000. The Defiant stayed NX longer than it should have, logically, but later Defiant class ships got NCC registrations. NX for experimental, NCC for production models.

I loved Enterprise: it was the series that made me care about Star Trek again after what I felt where the other lack-luster series that I didn't even bother to watch more than a couple episodes of.

I can only agree on DS9. Watch every other episode of voyager. There! I made it better.
Great video BUT, a few things. I think the Franklins NX designation makes perfect sence. NX was used for experimental vessels, the Defiant was originally NX as well (NX-74205) when it was sent to DS9. As well as others. (Prometheus - NX-59650, Bradbury - NX-72307, Excelsior - NX-2000 {Later redesignated NCC-2000 after leaving trials}, Galaxy {Prototype ship of the galaxy class} - NX-70637, USS Luna - NX-80101). After a ship leaves experimental status, it is reassigned with NCC for the Star Fleet. NCC stands for Naval Construction Code. Meaning, a ship built off of a pre tested set of plans with no major changes. Now here is the kicker. The Franklin did have a higher number, but starfleet has NEVER been big on numerical progression. (olderships quite frequently designations all over the board). Logically, the Franklin being warp 4, may simply have a higher designation (infact it was given that designation as tribute to Leonard Nimoys Birthday), as it was the 300 and whateverith test platform of the hull or warp 4 engine. There never would have been that many ships, just test platforms. Also the Enterprise was the first warp 5 platform. Thusly 01. Additionally, it was the first interstellar ship, and the pride of Starfleet, again giving it the 01 designation makes sence, especially if its not in use by an active ship. Why Enterprise kept the NX designation? Easy. At the time of its passing from trial status to full starship, there was likely no rule to change starships over to a new designation, same for the Columbia. It, while being based on the same NX platform of the Enterprise, had all new levels of equipment and thusly was not built specifically off of a predesigned blueprint, more of updated blueprints from the NX 01. ***UPDATE*** Upon adding substantial proof of newer ships (as late as the USS Titan) which bore the NX designation, I've come to realize while SOME were redesignated with NCC, not all of the prototype ships were, so even in the 24th century, quite a few ships bore the NX designation for life.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the registry numbers were supposed to be a combination of the ship variant and number of vessels
Like (for example) the Constitution Enterprise was Ncc 1701 which theoretically would have been the 17th ship class and the 1st one built after the prototype
(Though I'm 100% certain that at some point any such methodology was forgotten and the writers/effects guys just used random numbers in the actal shows)

unfortunately even that system falls apart early in the origional series, as pretty much everyone reading this will know Kirks Enterprise was NCC-1701
NCC 1701 was the second ship in the Constitution class, Constitution was 1700, Constelation was 1017, Excalabur was 1664, Exeter was 1672, Intrepid was 1631, and there were several more ships with 17.. reg numbers.
Registry numbers were all over the place, those ships were all the same class as Enterprise so class 17 if that theory is true, but with reg numbers starting with 10, 16 and 17 that completely rules that out.
indeed Constalation with the registry number 1017 was the first ship other than Enterprise to show a registry number so unfortunately (much as I would love to have a logical explanation like that) the theory is wrong
Terry Forsdyke The real reason is, of course, there's no real reason. Production considerations (1017 is used because they used an Enterprise kit model and moved the numbers around) and writers just making things up that sort of seem to fit, seeing as it's fiction anyway.
But, to retrofit the explanations into the universe, the best I know of for the odd numbering of TOS ships is they had a tradition of keeping the numbers of previous vessels of the same name. Something they carried on with far into the future with a few special names (like Enterprise)
Still, there's no real pattern so every attempt to explain it will fall short somewhere.
I like ST:E. My only issue big with the show was the xindi time war that dissappeared and magically reset.
The ship, the setting, the underdog tech.. all well done honestly.
And the Terran Empire tie in with the TOS Defiant going missing in the Tholian Web episode was a phenomenal tie in IMO. One of myy favorites was in a mirror darkly of all time in trek along with the DS9 tribble tie in besides TOS as a whole.
I loved Enterprise. I wish we could have seen this ship get its second engineering section, with beefed up new weapons shields and tractor beams.

Just because the Franklin had the Designation "326" that doesn't necessarily mean there had to be 325 ships before it was built. Many versions of that ship could have been on paper before the first weld was eve made physically. Imagine the poor engineering team looking at the "NX 322" Before having to file it as a viable ship, but already obsolete and having to draw up a similar ship but now with three new decks to house some new tech that was "just now" cutting edge. Those previous blueprint designations dont just go away Just because the vessel was never built. There is no continuity issue with the Franklin - just a bunch of ships that were on paper - that were completely viable and space worthy - never got built. Perfect Example : The Lockheed "L-133" was an Airplane that never left the drawing board STILL has the Designation "L-133" the "L-1101" Stargazer did manage to fly, but even had it not - the L-1101 would have forever been sealed to that blueprint. Hateful Trekkie's trying to punch holes in everything they can because they hate their own Genre is what you have here. Not a continuity error.
I love the nx 01 Enterprise. I got the diamond select art asylum one for my birthday a few weeks ago. And love it.
I have one as well. It really is a quality piece for the price.
I refuse to acknowledge JJ Trek and the argument that anything that occurred before the destruction of the Kelvin was Prime timeline.

Well IDK about the 320 something ships before Franklin but the Enterprise is the first NX-Class ship not nessicarilly the first ship with the designation NX. Then again on the number of ships, for whatever reason 320 some ships is being seen as alot, it really isn't. There are 300 ships in the U.S. Navy and that's just one country on one planet, not to mention hundreds of Federarion Planets. So Idk how the 74000 ships before Voyage cant include 300 before Enterprise was launched

The "Prime" timeline in the JJ movies is ALSO part of the kelvin timeline, it is an alternate to the true "Canon" timeline of the CBS copyright and NOT part of actual standard canon, this is due to the alternate license held by Paramount, owned by Viacom, former owner of CBS now owned by CBS Incorporated, both held by the same majority stock holder (Who is Shari Redstone at this time if I'm not mistaken but who's father Sumner Redstone formerly held control)
So you cannot take ANYTHING from the Paramount movies aka the JJ movies, as TRUE canon. The only reason the "Prime" timeline phrase exists is to give the JJ films a false appearance of legitimacy as the alternate license held by Paramount was made with the explicit deal to this effect and that CBS would not make any Star Trek for 5 years, that is why Star Trek Discovery is ALSO made under the paramount license and NOT the CBS license leading to to the tonal and visual similarity to the JJ films. As the alternate license dictates that the Paramount "Star Trek" differ from the CBS Star Trek by "20%".
FYI it's looking like Shari Redstone intends to push Paramount and CBS back under a single corporation ASAP thus reversing her fathers split of Viacom many years ago.
This means that Paramount and CBS will both have access to the standard canon license and we MAY see actual good shows come from it.
PS: The new picard show is also a Paramount alternate license and as such is not standard AKA first canon.
i grew up with the original kirk and ncc 1071 trough the next generation voyager ds9 and star trek enterprise jj abrams and alex kutzman and cbs are garbage and dicks unwurthy of the being fans of star trek and unwurthy of speaking those precious words star trek . those 2 idiots and cbs are destroying the star trek univers and frenchise and must be stopped

When I first seen this ship in TV guide and then in the show I hated it. However now that I have seen the whole show a few times I have gone on to really like the simple design of the NX class

im going though both shows Star Trek enterprise and Star Trek TOS both on Netflix. then after both shows i will go though TNG DS9 VOV.
The NX-01 was a beautiful ship, but it was a miracle the 1st crew survived in space at all.
To elaborate: I completely agree - humans were NOT prepared for what lay before them in deep space. They weren't prepared mentally and their ship was woefully under-equipped to handle the rigors of going where a Warp 5 ship could take them. I loved that about the show. They took an awful beating episode after episode and it was a miracle they made it back to earth for a retrofit just so they could get back out there and take another beating. And a lot of humans did not make it back from Enterprise missions.
But that's what make humans and the NX-01 itself exceptional. Yeah it wasn't prepared but damnit it kept on going, and honestly that ship had no right to even limp its way back to earth after the pounding it took. The battle with the Xindi that literally put holes in the NX-01 gives me anxiety every time I look at it. There's no way that ship shouldn't have just fallen to pieces. But it made it back. Tough little bastard. Just like humans, hopefully.
Um, I just wanted to point out that the Defiant and Prometheus (both experimental and the first in their classes), have the NX registration. My theory is that the Franklin was also experimental and one of the first in its class. Memory Alpha would seem to support this as well, since it lists the Franklin as a Freedom Class, not NX. I think the Franklin was one of the prototypes of the Freedom Class, which would make more sense continuity-wise.
This ship is my favourite Star Fleet ship. The design just feels so much more realistic than all the other Starfleet ships. The Enterprise (NCC-1701 and A) just hasn't aged well at all making it completely unrealistic. The NCC-1701-D is basically a cruise ship making it completely unrealistic. DS9 is Cardissian, Defiant is too cramped, (personally I feel like as humans we need our space and so this would be taken into account), and Voyager is a Military cruise ship. The NX-01 just feels and looks the most realistic and it also seems like a ship you could serve on.
Enter Name Here You generally didn’t see people on Defiants for extended cruises. Even if you were permanently assigned to one, you got to get off and stretch your legs at frequent ports of call. I agree that it would indeed be miserable to have to _live_ aboard the thing for any length of time.

re: the Defiant... have you seen the inside of military submarines? The Defiant is downright spacious in comparison. Nobody’s gonna suffocate on the Defiant.
Also, the TMP Enterprise has aged beautifully. It’s basically Starfleet perfection.
NCC 1701 was so dated and everything else people say, yet the US Navy was considering a study to see if the bridge configuration could work on Navy ships.
The NCC 1701 and the refit are classic designs and I still can't believe some find her "dated", "ugly", "retro".
She defined the look of ships in Star Trek, every ship comes from her design of saucer/secondary hull/warp engines and pylons.
Now, the Daedalus class is ugly and retro.
The exterior of the Constitution is a beauty, graceful and birdlike. The interior, though--come on. Even in the 60s, no one could have believed that the future would look like that.

I always thought of it for Star Trek as being United Systems Ship.
United Space Ship. And the NCC stands for Naval Construction Contract, Roddenberry merged the US and Soviet NC and C aircraft registrations of the time.
According to the (lazy) explanation from the creators, the Franklin was originally built before the enterprise but was a slower ship with a different designation. It was rebuilt and redesignated either during the Romulan war or after the Federation was founded (exact timing unclear) as a stopgap measure to fill out a new Federation Starfleet responsible for covering a much larger territory then was possible with just newly constructed ships, where the NX designation continued to be used across the various vessels for a time before the NCC was eventually adopted. These high-number NX ships also included a portion of Tellarite, Vulcan, and Andorian vessels. The entire line was generally a quantity-over-quality measure for the new alliance and the ships were phased out as the Federation got up to speed making their own ships. All of this, has, of course, not been mentioned anywhere in the actual shows or movies.
Nx is also a designation for experimental craft.(IE: NX Defiant in the DS9 Mirror Universe Episode) The Franklin in a Freedom class, not an NX class. It was redesignated the a new number and out back into service before dissapearing in the prime timeline.
