In 1810, the fifth son of King George III, His Royal Highness the Duke of Cumberland, was found severely injured, and his valet, Joseph Sellis, was found dead at St James's Palace. Sellis had attempted to murder the Duke and having failed, committed suicide, said the Duke. The Coroner's Inquest concurred - but few people in Britain, or at the Royal Court, believed this. Rumours of a homosexual triste abounded, of sexual jealousy, and there was a widespread belief that the valet had been killed to silence him... The press and caricaturists, found ways to insinuate that the Duke of Cumberland had murdered his valet - then in 1832, some 22 years after the murder, a libel was published, stating what was widely believed...

Thank you for covering this case. I have heard parts of it but never such an in-depth analysis. We will never know the full truth of the events of that night. I can say with all assuredly that Joseph Sellis was murdered. To think it was suicide is ludicrous. It is said his spirit still wanders St. James's Palace. God rest his soul and may he find, finally, some well-deserved peace.

I honestly think that Neale was the main killer and the Duke cover for him.. Neale probably told the Duke about the murder and the Duke told him to do some superficial wounds to him and then say that he was attacked.. and i believe that it was because the Duke and Neale were having a secret relationship that was seem abominable at that time..

It sounds like all three were rather unprepossessing men.
The notion that Sellis actually trued to kill himself by nearly severing his own head then thrown the razor several feet away. It’s absurd.
This reminds me of the Blackadder episode where Blackadder tries to run Baldrick as the candidate of the rotten borough after the other candidate had “very sadly, accidentally brutally cut his head off while combing his hair” and then Blackadder announces the he has stepped in as Returning Officer after the usual Returning Officer “accidentally brutally stabbed himself in the stomach while shaving”.

Excellent! This is chock full of fascinating historical detail and devious shenanigans! I'm going to have to watch/listen several times, I think, due to the intricacies of the layout and possibilities. Which is fine by me because I really enjoy these. Interesting that the first portrait of the Duke tactfully shows as little of his left eye as possible (the one injured in war), but still shows an oddity about it, but a much later portrait towards the end of the vid, when the Duke is older is full front and shows no oddity. Presumably the artist was instructed to do this. Great case and I'm looking forward to rewatching this again (and again!) Thanks so much, as ever for your dedication and hard work to bring us these cases. Lucky us! xx 😃

My grandfather's brother killed himself with a straight razor. My grandfather was visiting him in the hospital & he sent him on a 15 minute errand. When he returned he had cut his own throat with his straight razor & was already dead but he didn't almost decapitate himself. Just one slice in the right place. Why he did it is still a family mystery but i suspect my grandfather knew why. I never had the chance to ask him, he was born in 1868 & i was a year old when he died. My sister & i always listened with rapt attention to my dad when he told the stories passed down to him. Not all the stories were so bleak lol.

Well, I'll plump for Duke & Neale, in cahoots. I think Neale probably did the kill, aided by Duke, simply because insanely rich folk don't do anything unpleasant that they can get an underling to do for them. Like empty chamber pots for example. As Sellis was agitating for transportation for life for Neale, Neale would have been well-motivated for the task. The fact that the Duke didn't punish Neale for stealing and joined in with the cunning plan, shows that the Duke & Neale had a closer relationship than would normally be expected of master and servant. Sellis was a nuisance (maybe even a blackmailer?) and they got rid of him. I rest my case, m'Lud. A truly intriguing case which entertained my mind for quite a few days - thanks Mark! :)
PS. I think the saber was used to semi-decapitate Sellis, and the razor for the superficial wounds to the Duke. It's most peculiar that the Duke suffered cuts to his legs. Who aims at the legs with a saber? If his legs had been hacked by a razor-sharp military saber, it would have cut to the bone and the Duke wouldn't have been walking around raising the alarm. And would not have been recovered so soon - in fact it's likely that he would never regain the ability to walk etc with the arteries, veins, nerves, ligaments and muscles cut to the bone... the loss of blood...

Sellis probably had more grounds against Neil but due to his position he couldn't write them down. The letter has more of a "if you want an excuse to fire the guy, we can prove this minor offense" feel to it. People with large crimes in public positions are often fired over small, easy to prove, petty stuff.

Is Sellis's obsession with Neale's thievery so absurd? Maybe not, if you consider that he himself had been accused of theft when in NY and if that accusation was false. It might make him more sensitive to preserve his own reputation and increase his sense of justice.

Mark, this was brilliantly presented as always. Let me suggest an alternative explanation.
So we have two main theories: (a) Sellers quarrled with the Duke over Neal, it escalated into violence, Sellers was murdered with the sword. But if Sellers had attacked the Duke, say with the poker, wouldn't his killing have been justifiable? Why cover up? (b) Sellers caught the,Duke and Neal in flagrante. He was murdered to cover this up. But would murder have been necessary? I owed 2 career promotions to catching superiors in flagrante. The combination of alertness and discretion was regarded as praiseworthy. Couldn't a valet be bribed cheaply as opposed to murdered at a high risk premium?
What if Sellers and the Duke were romantically coupled? This would explain Sellers' obsessive antipathy to Neal. Sellers would be protective & jealous.
The emotional intensity would explain the otherwise inexplicable escalation. And the escalation would have led the Duke to question whether Sellers could in fact be controlled through bribery or otherwise. In such a case, murder might be the prudent choice.
As Rod Serling would say, submitted for your approval..

Thank you, Robert - I can't fault what you say... As the Cheltenham Chronicle pointed out at the time - only jealousy seemed to be sufficient as a motive to warrant such violence. It certainly would explain why Sellis was hiding in the inconvenient closet, rather than simply going to the Duke's chamber via the ballroom: he wanted to observe... It does seem redolent of extreme jealousy, yes!

I wonder why Sellis was sleeping in the royal quarters that night in the first place? Was that explained? Apparently he wouldn't normally have been there, but this night he was. If the duke or the other valet instigated this change, then wouldn't that mean Sellis's death was a calculated and planned murder rather than one done because he had discovered the duke up to illegal shenanigans or because someone had lost their temper? On the other hand, if the change in routine was because Sellis himself had decided to sleep there then this would indicate that he might have been trying to trap the other courtier in something. Maybe I missed the explanation in amongst everything else that was explained in this thoughtful and intelligent account.

Excellent and brilliantly told, well researched and very well illustrated. As always in your documentaries, here too there is a strong conclusion supported by convincing arguments., Mark! Of course, the motivation in this case was jealousy. It is said by psychologists jealousy is to be defined by hurt, anger, and fear. Hurt follows the perception that our partner may not value us enough to honour their commitment to the relationship, and the prospects of losing the relationship arouse fear and anxiety. Consequent anger may even turn to violence, which can, in some cases, be fatal. As happened in this case. I honestly feel so bad for Joseph Sellis.

Greetings from the US. I am watching this for the second time and very much enjoy your talent for storytelling and original illustrations. I also wanted to mention, for what it is worth, that although the volume of the main story narration is excellent, I do have trouble hearing the introductory part each time whether I am watching on my laptop or my phone. At any rate, I always look forward to your next upload so keep up the fine work. Many thanks and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

I agree, we are more careful to be more subtle about racism today in 2024, but it seems as long as humans are in existence, there will remain the need for exposure, tolerance, and acceptance of diversity. It's only when we know and care for each other that things change for the better. My Grandpa was horribly teased and bullied in school (by the predominantly, Swedish kids) for being of Norwegian decent in the early 1900's in Wisconsin. Then I come along as his only grandchild and of bi-racial descent, (who he loved with all his heart!) Hopefully, we evolve through the generations. But not always and not as fast as we'd like.

Hate still exists.....that’s why we pray every day, for The Lord Jesus to soften the hearts of people, sothey will see differences are lovely and interesting and so very cool! You pray too, please? TYSM! Prayer changes things!

It wasn’t the first time Royals and Nobles were protected by the judiciary and government, and it wasn’t the last. These days people are condemned (cancelled) by mere accusation and rumour. It’s happening now to our RF, by one of their OWN and his cohorts. As much as I despise the perpetrators, it does seem “what goes around, comes around”, even if it’s a couple of centuries later.

Some people are condemned (cancelled) by mere rumour or for using naughty words, other people, abominable to the highest degree, like Sir James Saville, are above the law, protected until the last day of their life.
