The Madness of Ronald True, 1922 by Mark John Maguire

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- When Olive Young was murdered in a basement flat in West London early on 6th March 1922, police were quickly on the trail of the main suspect: Ronald True. He was caught easily that same evening. The evidence against him was compelling: he had been dropped off at her flat the evening before and was seen at the flat the following morning - and when caught he had the jewellery stolen from her flat in his coat pocket. His suit was blood-stained also. There was only one thing that could save Ronald True from the hangman's noose: a plea of insanity...

A number of people have asked if they can help support my channel - I don't have any adverts on my channel (and don't intend to) but if anyone wishes to help defray the expenses of making these videos in some small way, they can buy me a cup of coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/MarkJohnMaguire
Thanks Mark...Just sent you a "coffee" !
Interesting case😮
I love your stories I look forward to everyone that comes on. It's not the only true old crime I listen to but it is by far the best.
What a rare treat: a documentary that doesn't have some godawful soundtrack banging away in the background, but instead relies solely upon a narrator with a clear speaking voice, and the actual ability to read. Thank you!
Thank you, Steve - that's a kind comment indeed!
I agree a measured and well spoken style
His voice is mesmerising. He needs to be on Radio 4!
I REALLY like you attitude!!
Totally agree. Refreshing to hear a clear, mature voice.
I love all the vintage photographs he uses to completely tell the tale. Must take a lot of research and digging.
Thanks, Margo - yes, some are much more difficult than others to find!
They Got Away With Murder Excellent!
you even had his discharge notice
Mark’s sketches add a personal note to his narration, always appreciated.❤️
You are one in a million. Here you are dong your own productions...everything from illustrations, music, narratives and more and you are running circles around the BBC. Well Done.
You are so talented and thank you for so many hours of fascinating stories. !
Thank you so much for your generous comment!
What a well-researched story, with a voice that is a treat to listen to, articulately written and masterfully narrated. Happy to have found this channel. Thank you very much for your hard work.
Such a lovely speaking voice and so intelligent
Thank you, Bev - you're kind to say so!
tru dat!
@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder My love & I really enjoy your time intelligent insight, and research. Bravo, Mark!
I could listen to him all day every day..
It’s ironic that True seemed to be happy at Broadmoor. But, nothing was really expected from him there. Thanks, that was a very good episode. Glad that I found your channel.
Many thanks, Nancy - yes indeed. It seemed rather a cosy place to be in those days, too. He seemed to do well there - in fact in 1942, complaints were made by some prison staff who said that Ronald True "was running the show"!
This is only the second vid on this channel that I've watched and I am beyond impressed..
I'm gobsmacked!! What an amazing production, such high standards in every aspect.
The depth of your research would make your channel outstanding all by itself. However there's then wonderful script writing, and narration.
To have "real person" narration really adds to enjoyment of the script.
I also liked, very much, the way you humanized them all. Not only the victims and their families, but Ronald and his mum too.
The description of them, walking on the terraces, was evocative. I had a lot of sympathy for that lady, but it's a good thing, I think, that her requests for him to be released failed.
Sorry for the essay, I'm really enthused to have found such a great new(to me) channel. And you've got new(to me) cases, which is great.
In still quarantining, due to being a high risk person, and I find myself lately wanting to whine like a little child,"I'm bored! I've watched *all* the internet! I'm bored! I want something *new*, NOW!
Now I've found it, and I'm very appreciative, Many thanks, and kudos all round.
Many thanks, Bilinda - stay safe during these strange times we are experiencing. I hope that my documentaries have helped occupy you for a time and thank you again for your many kind words of praise, which I greatly appreciate.
Right! Me too
Are you sure you're alright? You seem to be in great distress. I hope you'll recover soon.
Hi Belinda,
I hope you’re able to get out and about more now, and that you’ve been enjoying all these great stories!
I’m in Queensland and we’ve been so fortunate re lockdown rules but I’m missing visiting family in New Zealand.
Best wishes🤗
I enjoy these narratives immensely. They are seamless and written with style and attention to detail and language. I look forward to new episodes.
Glad you like them - many thanks, Bill.
Your videos are so well researched and produced so wonderfully. I'm sure that this channel will grow exponentially when you're discovered by others who are fascinated by old cases where justice goes AWOL. Thank you so much for another great video! 💕
Thank you, Laura - very much appreciated.
@@grahamt33 I completely agree, Graham, and I would tell everyone, but unfortunately I seem to have surrounded myself with people who aren't interesting enough to appreciate this channel or true crime in general. 😞

Many thanks, Stephen - I did wonder whether his tip was any good!
An amazing series. Stumbled on you by accident a few weeks back and, sadly, I have watched all videos (most more than once) and have to wait for more! But the quality of your research and presentation, showing the effort you put into these, make the wait worthwhile.
Thank you, Richard - I am delighted you have enjoyed them!
if you have run out of true crime videos to viddie, check out "that chapter", he narrates them intelligently and researches his stories with a eye for the intimate details.most are of american crime, which opens up a entire new perspective on lunatics and the criminally insane.
You’re right Richard. He must be very pleased at the amount of positive comments. I reckon there will be more stories on the way Really like him 👍👍😀

They left out the fact that Ronald True was found wearing Olive Young's undergarments. He would have worn them to court except the police had confiscated them.

That's very kind of you, Tara - I'm glad you liked it!
Yes, same here!
Just discovered your channel. What an absolute pleasure. You cover very difficult subject matter in a comprehensive, straightforward manner but maintain an empathy with both the content and your listeners. Quite outstanding thank you so much for all your hard work so professionally done.
Ronald True must surely be the only man to have ever found an element of sanctuary & a niche in all of Broadmoor's sinister history. What a tragic tale of a man obviously tortured & his victims, not least of all Miss Young.
I had never heard of this case, or your channel, before!!! What a wonderful discovery! You, sir, are one of those people who could read a telephone book and make it sound interesting! I look forward to more :-) well done!
Extremely well made, I regularly walk past the murder flat as I live locally; learned a lot from your excellent video. Well done sir.
Thank you, Paul - I often wonder of the people who live in these places have any idea of their history.
Broadmoor sounds great! - theatre society, rose garden and servant! The "gentleman's ward"!!! What a strange man - fascinating story of his life, you've managed to dig up a lot of info on him. The whole pilot/flying thing is extraordinary. How on earth was he employed as a test pilot after his 3 crashes at Farnborough, and then even more mystifying, employed as a flying instructor in the States! It's a shame he didn't take the stand during his trial because it would be interesting to hear what he had to say for himself. Probably that the other Ronald True did it. True is so fascinatingly odd that he's worthy of a book, I think (hint!).
Wonderful story-telling as always, and I can see how much research went into this. Superb. Thanks very much for all your time and skill that goes into these documentaries. :)
Thanks a lot, Mel! It was news to me, too - I knew that conditions can be relaxed in Broadmoor and there is a lot of latitude given to sociable, functioning patients - but "gentleman's ward" and a batman?! They held dances there too and the men dressed up in bow ties and the women in ballroom gowns... I think a TV drama would work for this...
@@TheyGotAwayWithMurder I'm thinking of booking a weekend there next year... :) A TV drama would be great. Or a film. Or a radio play.
@@MelanieMaguire Yes - but you might end up being the charwoman for some crazy old dame! ;)

Oh, this is one of those UA-cam recommends that only happen once in a lifetime. Amazing content!
Love your videos. So interesting and beautifully narrated. Please keep them coming.
Thank you Katrina - I fully intend to!
Interesting that you should have considered it well narrated; Whilst I considered it well written (in spite of the odd mispronunciation and Malapropism), I found the voice too soft and intimate, in a woman this would not be worthy of criticism but in a man I found it altogether rather creepy.
This is just a perfect series..the contrast between the eminently rational and yet soothing narration, the lack of sensationalism, the harming graphics, and the high quality of writing.. thank you!
Oddly, I just found in the attic, a 1925 book, “TheTrial of Ronald True”, containing the transcript of the trial.. looking forward to perusingit, now!
Thank you, Peri - I'm so glad you enjoyed it! That's interesting you have found an old book on True - is it the 'Penguin Notable British Trials' series? If so, it is prefaced by a very good article by a barrister called Donald Carswell. It is marred only by its lacking the details of True's parentage (Lady de Freyne was discreetly kept out of the trial entirely - and his aunt Grace Angus gave evidence on her behalf, which is rather curious!) and what became of True during his period in Broadmoor, for obvious reasons. If it is another book, then I do not know of it and would be intrigued! True's father William True, outlived his son, but his family tell me that they don't think he had anything further to do with his son.
They Got Away With Murder Actually, it’s a hardback (although I slaver at the very mention of Penguin paperbacks).. looks like a first edition.. “Notable British Trials”. Will post photo later.🍑
First edition too - excellent!
Totally agree that the presentation is excellent. The lack of dramatic overload is very much appreciated by me.
One of the best videos I have seen and heard, clear precise English and tome modulation

They Got Away With Murder Bravo 👏 Mark!!! Now do an episode on the “Hashtag: Rothchild Epstein Connection” ua-cam.com/video/RkRBEtxyXMs/v-deo.html
Currently reading about this case on my forensic psychology module and some students recommended this video. Very informative. Seems there was a complex history there to influence his behaviour. Really quite sad how supportive his mother seemed to be even after committing such a horrific crime. I'm not sure it helped with his ego..
Thank you, Jordana - that is very nice to hear. Yes, indeed - I have been in touch with some relatives of Ronald True's in recent months, who have told me that members of the family were greatly embarrassed at the time of his trial to be associated with him. A very curious chap!
Thank you for this one. I’ve watched no end of true crime programmes but this one is so beautifully written and eloquently read that it sets itself above all others.
You're very kind to say so - thank you!
I just found this jewel of a podcast. The voice tells the story so well. Though I'm not certain who wrote the narrative, my sincere compliments to the writer. True crime has interested me for quite a while and these stories are from a different time, which means that I haven't heard them before. Plus, these stories take place in a different country from my own. I'm going to listen to every story that's available. Thank you.

I listen to these in the gym, and I feel the narrator is talking to me personally, and passing on some information that I need to know. It makes everything come alive.
What a wonderful comment - thank you Zoya!
I listen to these in my truck on the way to work or to the next state over for shopping trips (Delaware has no sales tax!) and they are usually JUST the right length for my trip there & back. And now that you mention it, they’d be great for me to listen to when beginning a walking routine around the neighborhood since I could time myself by the length of each video and never get bored!
Mr Maguire, I have to say that I find this one of the very best of your essays that I have listened to; and all of your essays are of the highest standard. Thank you.
That's very kind of you indeed - thank you!
In addition to the wonderful research of lesser known but no less fascinating cases, beautifully written essays and gorge narration it is wonderful to have monetary adjustment to current amounts. It helps enormously in putting things in perspective yet many crime channels do not. What a marvelous channel!

Lol. He's the only one in the world that knew where the 7-11 gas stations are hiding in the desert.
I'm just getting to know your work and it just gets better and better. On Ronald True, an author would not dare to create such a character, nobody would believe it, but truth be known I've known a few types that measure up quite closely to Mr. True.
This world is a very strange, fascinating and sometimes lethal place.
Great Work Sir.
I found this channel a few days ago and have been binge watching every episode. I love true crime, but so many channels focus on modern cases while ignoring these older ones. I discovered true crime as a child through the Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden cases, so these "vintage" cases are my favorites. Thank you so much for such a wonderful channel!
I'm delighted you like it, Aimee - thank you!
This case was very sad. It's sad to know that this man might have never committed the horrible murder of an innocent woman if he had gotten help early in his life like he probably would've gotten now in our modern society.
After waiting for 2 years, you might get a telephone assessment
Thank you for sharing! I love your true stories.
Your voice is amazing to me. I am fascinated with this series of videos. Your research and commentary are terrific 👍🏽
Thank you, Michele - I'm delighted they appeal to you and you are most kind to say so.
Hi..I'm real pleased I found you..Great Narrator..stay safe all..love from New Zealand
Thank you very much!
This will sound absolutely loopy but in the letter to Sims, True seems, in the language of his time to be, "a thoroughly nice chap!"
If, then or now, I was shown that letter, I would *never* have believed it was written by someone who'd committed such heinous acts.
Which brings me to what's giving me an uneasy feeling.
How many more of his type are there? So affable, good humoured, seeming kind and of reasonable intelligence and education? Looking for their next victim, and hoping nobody finds out about the last one?
Edit...posted, then had the brainwave...as in Ted Bundy, to name one of many.
(Leaving my comment up for the algorithm, even though I feel silly)
As always, thank you Mark. As always an impressively good production. As always, like so many others, I hope you can do more soon.
P.S. This was a repeat for me, and I think it's unfair I can't 'like' twice.! Imo if someone's so impressed they will come back and watch the vid again, that should merit bonus points.
Bilinda - thank you for your thoughtful comment! Yes, I agree, the letter is very affable...likeable - in fact hard to believe that the man who write it had murdered the poor woman in the basement apartment... People are strange and often unfathomable creatures, with many different, conflicting sides to them. Hopefully there are fewer with such dark tendencies to them, though!
This is the second one I'm listening to. UA-cam all of a sudden came up with this channel tonight. I can only echo the comments I read so far. You bring people to life with the pictures of those times, and with the way you write about all those who are involved. Well done sir, thank you.
Excellently presented as usual. Thank you and regards from Loutraki Greece
Many thanks, Francis!
This narrator has a golden voice!!!
Fascinating case. It's hard to know what to make of True - pathological liar? conman? delusional? paranoid? Some very strange wiring. I bet the psychiatrists at Broadmoor had a ball psycho-analysing him! Thanks for a great upload!
Thanks Ted - I replied earlier but it seems to have disappeared for some reason... I believe at Broadmoor, True was an exemplary character!
I replied to this vid two days ago and strangely my post disappeared also. I wondered if True had a posthumous hand in it. Of all the people chronicled by MJM in this series, True stands out as oddly content, happy with his lot, and easily adaptable. Even the glassless monocle seemed to spring from a sunny disposition. True was the insane court jester, class clown, and village idiot all rolled up into one. And his impish grin gave him a certain ironic comic persona, like life's all fun and games, until it isn't, but nobody informed True otherwise. He couldn't decipher between right and wrong, so maybe thought there was no wrong. Like the child whose reality is distorted and nobody gets hurt because in cartoons they don't get hurt.
He wasn’t insane. He was a psychopath.
Arletta Sloan Incorrect. They are perfectly in touch with reality.
His mistreating animals as a child, was a giveaway.
brian rodney He ticks all the boxes.
@@thatguyinelnorte Interesting. The idea is that whether insanity works as a defense for psychopaths depends on the individual case. So the burden of proof still rests on the defendant's lawyers.
Marvelous story masterfully told as always. This channel is truly fascinating.
Thank you kindly!

Thoroughly enjoyable video. Thank you, informative and entertaining. Clear and concise facts.
Much appreciated!
This has got to be the best youtube channel I have found in years. I am obsessed! Not in a creepy murder way. ;) I just love your extensive analysis! Really great job!
Imagine the possible upbringing he had, being sent from pillar to post in those times, beginning with a grandmother, and being illegitimate. Such children were blamed just as much as the mother. She never seemed to have him with her, though clearly she was willing to fund him with her husband’s money. No wonder he never held down a job, and became increasingly odd. A tragic life, that sadly took another life as well.
LOVE your series!!! No background music, just the facts. Please continue to make them. I am hooked, and have told my friends this is the best thing on UA-cam.
Thank you for such a delightful comment, Catherine!
Of all your tales of getting away with murder, I do believe, for me, this is the best. Perhaps it is in the telling, for it is your voice, your ever so clever look at all sides, indeed, it is you.

Thank you very much, Barbara - what a delightful comment!
Excellent account of a very sad story. Thoughtful and enlightening as to the times in which the events took place. Thank you.
Many thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was completely fascinated by this man, mainly b/c in 2016 a book came out called "The Trials of the King of Hampshire; Madness, Secrecy & Betrayal in Georgian England," by Elizabeth Foyster, about the 3rd earl of Portsmouth, John Wallop, who sounds EXACTLY like Ronald True. The family was so mortified by the earl that they totally erased him from history (no portraits, no gravesite, no mentions) until Ms. Foyster accidentally discovered the transcripts from his sanity trial from 1823. Whatever was wrong w/the earl was also wrong w/True, which I suspect in both instances start w/rather profound cases of mental retardation; however, the earl wasn't paranoid and probably never killed anyone! It's a fascinating book and a fascinating episode!
I love your channel and these fascinating people and the fashion in which you tell their tales. 🎄
Thank you so much, Karen!
Such a lovely, and eloquent narration. A gentleman telling a really " ungentlemanly" tale. It really adds something to it!
Thank you, Jen!
Just found this channel. This is an excellent documentary of the difficulties concerning "legal" insanity. Very interesting.
Thank you!
In the US, states that allow a defense of insanity (four do not) changed the wording of a verdict of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) to Guilty but Mentally Ill (GBMI). The reason this was done was because if one is found not guilty, then they are entitled to release sometime after sanity is gained, and we had a number of released patients go on to commit other violent crimes, including murder. I completed a college internship at a male NGRI psychiatric institution, where one patient in particular was a dangerous paranoid schizophrenic who had committed murder. Decades later he was released after being deemed sane and a year later murdered his roommate while in the throes of a psychotic delusion. The problem is that 99.99% of the time sanity is gained 99.99% through the administration of psychotropic medication while in hospital, as was his case. But, once released former patients cannot be forced to continue medication.
