The cracks had already started in 2001.

You're right. I was concerned about the recruiting after the 2001 seniors were done. I should've been a little earlier.
The 2001 Texas Tech and Kansas State games were major concerns, especially the K-State game since it was the last game before Colorado. I was hoping the bye would help shake up a sub-par effort.

@@gynandroidhead KSU was much better than their 6-6 record in 2001. If you take a look at their defense half of their players played in the NFL at some point. KSU also took Oklahoma to the brink in Norman in 2001.

We fired 2 coaches after 9-win seasons. Going to take awhile to rebuild after the fallout from both, not to mention how hard it is to recruit to Lincoln.

@@cornfednebraskaneer I don't how long you've been a Husker fan (that's not a dig, that's an actual question), but I've been one for 40 years. This game was an eye-opener that the house of cards could collapse. No one of course thought they would collapse the way they did for a generation.
Most of the student body in Lincoln wasn't even born or has no first-hand recollection when the Huskers were kicking ass and taking names. There's a laundry list of reasons for this way beyond firing coaches with 9-win seasons, but your post is certainly a start to a solid discussion, and I thank you for posting it.

gynandroidhead yet there was a laundry list of reasons not to fire coaches after a 9 win season. Especially Solich, they had momentum, new young coaches wanting to recruit, trying to install better offensive system. The defense picked up under Bo. The 2003 staff deserved more time.

@@sorney98 For me, the biggest problem with the firing is that if you are going to fire a 9-win coach, you had better have someone really, really top notch to replace them. Steve Pederson had a lot of big names turn him down, and he made a horrific hire AT THE TIME (not a hindsight observation).
With that said, I would've had no problem with him getting another year after the 2003 rebound, but remember.
Right or wrong, they did not fire a coach with a 58-19 record over six seasons. They fired a coach who was 16-12 in his last two seasons and two games in the season prior.

gynandroidhead but see you said it. Big names were turning down the Nebraska job? Why? Because not many coaches can guarantee they can do better then Solich and Pelini. Pederson knew when he made this move it wasn’t gonna be easy. And really the person that pushed him was Pearlman. I don’t think Pederson wanted to make the move honestly. That’s my humble opinion but I’ve been wrong before.
The big difference is Solich was willing to make changes to win. What doomed Callahan was he wasn’t gonna change things. Pelini was too loyal which I think doomed him. And Riley making the scheme change on defense in his third year was a bone head move. If gonna make a scheme change, go from a different base defense, you do it right away, the first year you are there so you can get to recruiting right away at the JUCO and also some high school athletes

Texas Tech, man why you cry? This is a sport, you have a chance to lose. Quit sports if you can't deal with a loss. Baby man grow up and deal with any loss.
