HOW TO MAKE MEDIUM FOR PAINT POURS USING ELMERS GLUE

  • WELCOME CREATORS!
    When I started making paint pours I didn’t know what a medium was. What the heck does it do anyway?
    Imagine taking a bunch of paints and layering then in a cup without medium. I think you might end up pouring a muddy mess. I’m sure some of the paints would blend but not in a good way.
    When we add a binder to the paint, we are changing the properties of the paint. It becomes easier to work with and the paints have a better chance of keeping their color.
    If you are on a budget like me and just starting out, you can save some money by using Elmer’s glue as a medium. I’ll show you how to make the medium and then I’ll mix up a bit of red paint with the glue medium.
    I ended up mixing additional paints with the glue medium I made and I’ve included the results at the end of this video.

    Get a gallon of PVA glue at the hardware store for $35.00 . Mix 70% glue with 30% water and you are done. That is your pouring medium.

      I think you can get a gallon of flortrol at the hardware store for less than $35. When I was making a glue medium it was to save money. Do you prefer glue and water as a medium? I’m curious about this PVA glue.

      Floetrol is not the same as PVA, . Floetrol is a paint extender to make paint flow better. Pick the right Floetrol, one is for Acrylic paint and the other one is for latex paint.

    The sound it's just fine to me. it gets better some point at the minute 7'. Thank you for sharing this medium made at home, thank you. Got one quastions, it gets glossy also? i believe so but, just to check.

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  Рік тому +4

      Hello!
      It does not get glossy. It will dry a bit flat. It you want to get the glossy look like the way the painting did when it was wet there are a few things you can do. You can buy liquitex gloss medium and brush a layer of it over your painting once it completely dries. Give it 10 days in the winter. And 6 days in summer.
      Then if you want too add another coat of the gloss medium after the first coat dries. This is the easiest way to get a nice gloss shine.
      If you are feeling bold, you can put a coat of epoxy resin over your painting. It is good to have at least one coat of the liquitex gloss medium before adding resin. Epoxy resin is expensive, smelly and can take a few tries before getting it right. If you want to get into resin over your art then watch some videos on it. It has been a Challange for me. I hope you are enjoying creating. Remember if you don’t like the outcome, sleep on it because often we change our minds after we take a break from our artwork. Peace!

      Hi Tammy! I have not tried clear glue in making medium so I do not know. Also I don’t know about using glue medium in jewelry . You might be thinking of resin. I see people use resin. You can buy resin that cures with UV light. I have watched jewelry making videos and they use resin. I hope this helps.

    The glue/water medium doesn't change the color of the paint? Seems to me that red + white would make the paint pink?

      Rob,
      Great question. The glue doesn’t act like white paint, but it can dull the color of your paint a bit. It depends on the brand of paint you are using.

      IMO you can use both. I have used both, I learned with School Glue but I honestly don’t know what the difference is. We bring our personality into our art. Some people are very specific and I used to be that way until I went to the store and couldn’t find the school glue. I was too tired to go to another store and so I bought the regular glue. It worked just fine. 🍀

    Does it crack after the paint dries?

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  7 місяців тому

      If your painting cracks then you will need to thin out your paints by adding some water. Make sure you buy acrylic paint and not tempura paint. Also if you buy craft paints get the glossy finish and avoid Matt finish. I hope this helps. Sometimes the paint cracks because the layers are too thick. It takes time to get your feel of how you like your paint consistency to be. So have fun and keep going! You got this! ✌️🌻🥰

    How can I make 3 cups of glue and water

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  Місяць тому +1

      Depending on how thick or thin you want your paints and depending on the type of acrylic paint you use, my suggestion is to have approximately 60 to 70% glue and the rest water. Just mix it really good. If your paints seem too thin after you mix them up, just add a little glue. Remember it’s a learning process. I hope you have a lot fun with paint pouring!

    Glue does not wok. I tried it a few times and every time it failed.

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  5 місяців тому +2

      Tell me how it failed. What type of paints were you using and what style of fluid art did you try? You can always thin your glue medium out with more water if you need your paints to have a more fluid consistency. The absolute hardest part of fluid painting has been the thinness or thickness of the paint. It takes practice. And it is frustrating. Don’t give up. Try Floetrol. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowell’s in the USA.

    I just watched 3 or 4 videos where people were experimented with using different glues including Elmer's glue and it didn't work.

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  5 місяців тому +1

      There is so much that goes into fluid painting. How thick or thin your paints are, what kind of paints you are using, your ratios. You could use a glue mixture and have a great pour or use it and get dull result’s. My advice is keep playing with the paint. Experiment. Have fun. You will find what works for you. We all evolve in our creativity. Thanks for watching! 🌟

      Hello!
      I used 2/3 cup glue and 1/3 cup water. This is a good place to start. You can always make it thicker by adding glue or thinner by adding water. It may take some time to figure out how thick you want your medium to be. It’s really about personal preference. I hope you enjoy creating and have fun with it!

      Thé second question is : fort 1 part médium, what part of paint ? 1/1 ?

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  8 місяців тому

      @christiancris8252 Hi Chris. It depends on what kind of paint you are using. You don’t have to use 1:1. With a craft paint I think you can go 2 parts glue medium to one part paint. Ppl have recipes and I’ve tried a lot of them. You want your color to stay strong but you need to make it fluid to pour and have some control when you tilt the canvas. Also I want to add that your glue medium can be 1/3 to 2/3 ratio but also try a 60/40 mix. The hardest thing for me was to learn how to get the right consistency between the paint and the medium. The final thing before you pour. In my experience I made my mix too thick in the beginning. I’ve learned to thin out my paints. If you buy tube paint like artists loft or masters touch I recommend that you put some medium in your cup, then add a little paint and mix. If it need more color add a little more paint. Now if your mix seems thick, add a little water. Just like a half teaspoon and mix. Check your consistency and then add a little more water. If your mix seems too thin then add a little bit of your medium. Basically don’t be afraid to play with your mixing. You are going to settle into what works for you. It is also important that each of your colors have the same consistency. Make sure your base paint (typically is thinned out good so it doesn’t slow or stop your paints from flowing. Try using a 8 x 10 canvas from the dollar store to just play with your paint movement. Do you want me to do this on camera? I can make a video for you. I’ll put your name in it. Would that help? Be patient with yourself. The how to with the paint consistency is the hardest part and I still have times where one of my paints is either too thin or too thick. You will eventually find what you like. Just don’t give up. It’s a process.

    • @AddColor2Life
      @AddColor2Life  8 місяців тому

      Try 60 glue and 40 water. For the medium. If it seems thick add a little water. You are making the medium or using a medium to get the flow for your paints. You can store your medium but always stir it or shake it before using. If you get little bubbles when you pour you can use a heat gun or torch gun thing to pop the bubbles. Let me know how it goes. And have fun. Your metallic paint will help to make the cells in the painting. You can also add silicone to you paints once they are mixed to help create cells. I buy treadmill silicone. Off Amazon. Just a few drops in each paint mix is all you need.
