I worked at international dealership and I serviced the doc and dpf. we used fsx air machine and I was quite impressed, I thought it did a great job. my opinion was it was stupid we collected the soot from the items then throw the soot in the garage. the soot ends up in the environment anyway. that still has to be way better than removing from water. I also thought EPA was stupid...... how is it illegal to idle more than 5 minutes but somehow good for the environment to run at 1200 rpm for half hour dumping raw fuel in the exhaust? bp and mobile must have designed after treatment system.
It doesn't work like this: Soot is caught by DPF and burned off either during heavy load or when engine enters regen mode. Soot is carbon, it goes into CO2 and flows out of your exhaust as a gas. What stays in the filter is ash - non-burnable solids that pass through your engine and come from oil and fuel additives, engine wear products or even very fine dust particles that make their way through air filter and get stuck in DPF. You get only tiny fraction of ash in your exhaust compared to soot, otherwise your DPF would get filled in no time.
I did this and it got a lot out but ended up getting a delete done. When they gutted it, I found out the back of the filter was clogged only about an inch. I could have drilled the clogged clogged holes out. It would be tedious but worth it.
Not sure how this is better then the cooking process they use now but was interesting. I suppose a private shop can do this. What the dry time on this before it can be reinstalled?
Bought a truck in a California emissions state it is a 2001 Cummins ISL it was retrofitted with a Johnson matthey Dpf/Doc, Deleted it since it is not required where I am. All I used was a garden hose that I bent to pressurize it. Tons of ash came out even after I had blown it out with water. Just want to make sure I have it ready if ever need be.
Idk about the dish liquid but straight cold water pressure sprayer for a few hours and mine went 76,500 miles before I had a stopped regen. About to do it again.
Tony Mullins can regular guy with limited mechanical understanding do this correctly? Also main question, how long u can keep cleaning and using same dpf? Thanks a lot!
I don't understand how a DPF saves the environment. If you remove it the particulates fall to the ground, they are heavier than air. If you clean it the particles go down the drain. If you replace it the particles go to the landfill. One way or another it all ends up back to the Earth.
I'm not sure what the substrate of the filter media consists of but I can't see why you couldn't pre-soak the dpf filter in a hot bath mixed with CLR or similar product to soften/loosen the carbon soot buildup then a short rinse with high pressure water. Another option I wondered for older diesels like mine without emissions and EGR is a simple steel mesh air filter like the same one used on the intake side to capture carbon soot particles, then wash it out at every oil change "B" service.
I'm not a tree hugger by any means. But seems kinda silly that we can't have the soot in the air but we can wash the soot out of the filter into the water systems......lol makes perfect sense. Still ended up into the environment just took more steps to get there.......enginering at work. Just my 2 cents
Jamie Prentice Soot is trapped in the filter and then converted. What you're seeing washed out is Ash. There's a LOT less of it but, you're right, it's not very good for the environment either.
every pound of diesel fuel has pollutants the epa does not like. we used to put them into the air straight away, now we have an entire industry to build computer controlled boxes to trap and incinerate these , but once they are full we wash the "concentrate" down the drain and call that progress.
Jamie Prentice true, and here in Australia with DPF’s end emission laws over the last 15 years we have seen an increase of over 200% in melanomas. This is from a professor at Westmead hospital. Particulate may look bad, but it’s one hell of a UV filter.

I think this is what I’m going to do. I just bought used a Takeuchi 8. The DPF is thoroughly clogged. The machine is throwing a code and won’t stay in Regen. I bought the machine to be a beater, not my primary equipment. I expect it would cost minimum 3G to have it done professionally? If not more? So power wash it and put it back in and that’s it? Should I expect it to stop throwing a code automatically or run regen? Great vid.
I’m just going to build a custom set up using a hot water heater, collection drums, filters, etc. And make sure it’s legally disposed off. Haven’t done any reading on exhaust particulates disposal.
For the record air cleaning is done in a puffer machine which does clean the filter if it was NOT OVERLOADED WITH PARTICULATE MATTER( PM) In this case the filter has to be baked for 8 hours at 1200 DEGS F then put back into the puffer to push the ash out.I have been working with DPF'S AND UREA since 2002 long before the Federal law in 2007.
i clean these professionally. we do tests before to make sure the dpf passes various tests before hand. we use a blast cabinet to blow out as much particulate as possible then move it to a high pressure water and air flush station. then again to the blast cabinet to blow out as much moisture as possible then proceed to bake the dpf for 12 hours at 1100 degrees Celsius. after all that we move it to the blast station again to get the final particulates out. our cleaning method cleans 99% of contaminates in the dpf or doc.
+orlando villa I tend to let them sit overnight if time allows for it and flip them periodically. If time is tight I still try to give them a couple of hours in front of a fan. I've never tried Cobra Clean so I can't really comment on it.

neat - thank you for easy and cost saving method I will try this simple method on my 2011 freightliner - btw do I've to buy new clamps to reinstall the filters or can use the old ones please let me know Thank you 😊
I have a question about residual water that may be left in the filters! I guess you could blow some out with compressed air, but these filter look to be very deep (long) so even after blowing them out with air would still leave a LOT of moisture within the internals of the filter, do you let them dry out for a period of time before installing them? or do you just mount them back on the truck and let the exhaust heat dry them out?
Do I need to clear a code using a laptop with the software afterwards, like on some other videos? Or can I just slap them right back in and DPF light should be gone. My Freightliner has 800,000 Miles.
If the engine light is on because it is requesting an Ash cleaning then it will most likely need to be reset with software. Detroit calls it resetting the Ash Accumulator.
I couldn't give you exact numbers. I'm not sure what the pressure washer I use is rated for. I guess a typical unit that you would use to wash a vehicle.
Is there a alternative gasket to use when having to properly seat filters that have been installed improperly? Im going to try and readjust them since i see soot, but want to reuse rings since i just bought them. Is there hvac tape that can act as a new gasket?
Dont wet wash a dpf, period. I clean DPFs. The process is as follows: visually inspect the clean side of the dpf. What you're looking for is small cracks in between the cells, shifting ceramic or more than 20 corrupted cells. A very easy way to tell from a visual inspection if your dpf is bad is if there is soot all around the outer diameter of the clean side. If the dpf passes visual, we pin them. Were checking for soot depth. Then we flow them on the fsx table and correspond that reading to the fsx provided spec. After pinning we blow them out, on average a moderately dirty dpf will take 20 minutes. Then we reflow and pin again. If the dpf is still out of spec, we bake them in a kiln for 12 hours. This allows the remaining particulate particles to be broken down and blown out after a second time through the machine. Wet washing a dpf is a highly inefficient way to clean them. Its ceramic...you dont get ceramic wet. It's common sense
Bryan Case Coffee mugs are also coated with glass on the inside and most of the outside. Also, what liquid is being used in FSX's machine and how it's delivered play a huge role. Not a stretch for their specialized machine to safely clean a DPF if pressure washing it doesn't.
thanks so much for the video very helpful . i did the same as the video . after the black ash came out i noticed so brown or dark orange color started coming out also. just asking myself did the filter got damege or some ?????????
You will get orange coloured particles come out it’s where these DPF filters get redhot trying to regenerate it turns the ash to an orange colour if orange coloured water came out that’s a good sign you are flushing it out!
After the clean up .. I have to plugged the truck to a computer or any specific program. I'm asking because I don't have neither of those, just want to know thanks and keep the amazing job
I would suggest not to powerwash after I just did and even with the $100 power washer I did notice little damage and flaking when blowing out with compressed air. From the information that I got today it sounds like if you wash them with liquid it has to be with volume not by pressure spray
I let it sit overnight and it wasn't enough. After reinstalling water was coming. I would suggest dry with air blower and let it dry for 2-3 days minimum.
you can also drill holes on it, or spray it with water, ether way your warranty will be chopped into tinny pieces, grinded and burned right in front of you.
Right? I clean DPFs using a FSX machine. We've actually been receiving more work due to customers not being satisfied with the wet wash method. Its ceramic lol ceramic shouldn't be wet.
Will be attempting this soon on a 2011 International DuraStar. I read through the comments and have gathered some good info. Run a parked regen before and after, replace clamps and have the soot levels/dpf reset. My question however, is there a way to reset the soot levels/dpf on my own utilizing a laptop or other form of tool? Or is going to a shop my only option?
Abdul Azim is not hard man, i just took my out today. you remove the skirts if you have any and the steps. after that use a 10mm to remove the cover of the box, than remove the clamps from the filters and slide the front one out and do the same thing with the back one. you will HAVE TO but the clamps, the front ones(2 clamps) are sold as a kit with the metal gasket included(2 gaskets) The back ones are a little pricey, maybe 140-160 each, thay are sold reparately. Some people reuse them, you will have to but some sort of sealent if decide not to buy new ones. I recommend you buy new ones.
If we clean out before any lights or problems , just as preventative maintenance, do we Still need to take truck to the dealer for Anything?(reset anything)
Yes that's a good point. It would be best to have a shop reset them. Detroit calls it an "Ash Accumulator". Cummins calls it DPF maintenance I believe. I'm sure every manufacturer has their own term for it. It literally only takes a minute to do.
TheDieseler Hello sir If i clean it myself and then go shop to reset it.They gonna reset it? Also this way keep cleaning and rolling same dpf, how long u can use original dpf ,. Thank you for your video!

I also thought EPA was stupid...... how is it illegal to idle more than 5 minutes but somehow good for the environment to run at 1200 rpm for half hour dumping raw fuel in the exhaust? bp and mobile must have designed after treatment system.
jeff westbrooke how much do it cost to have DPF cleaned at the dealership? I have a ProStar with the regen system
Thank you very much for this information. As a new with my own authority I have to be on a tight budget and my DPF needs to be cleaned.
How long does it needs to dry before reinstalling? Is there a risk of damaging anything if applying heat (exhaust) before it dries?
I did this and it got a lot out but ended up getting a delete done. When they gutted it, I found out the back of the filter was clogged only about an inch. I could have drilled the clogged clogged holes out. It would be tedious but worth it.
Not sure how this is better then the cooking process they use now but was interesting. I suppose a private shop can do this. What the dry time on this before it can be reinstalled?
I pulled mine pressure washed it put it back on worked great
That's the same way we do it. Works good. Got us another year out of a dd15
Do you have a video on how to remove it
I wonder if a ultrasonic bath would be good for this?
Dann I thought I was the only one that does this, this method works really well but I also use dawn dish deturgent
Tony Mullins I wondered if that would work. I’m gonna try that tomorrow
Nathan Sutton yeah it works i do it all the time
Idk about the dish liquid but straight cold water pressure sprayer for a few hours and mine went 76,500 miles before I had a stopped regen. About to do it again.
Hi has anyone thought of using caustic soda to soak it first?
Tony Mullins can regular guy with limited mechanical understanding do this correctly? Also main question, how long u can keep cleaning and using same dpf?
Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the video. How to dry them after and if you can make a video how to get it out off Volvo 2020
How long it needs to get dry?
Turn it down to drain for a minute, install it and run the engine at 1000rpm for 15 minutes.
Its just a way to get people to buy more parts for there car.
The whole point is to put it where it cannot be inhaled.
Jamie Prentice true, and here in Australia with DPF’s end emission laws over the last 15 years we have seen an increase of over 200% in melanomas. This is from a professor at Westmead hospital. Particulate may look bad, but it’s one hell of a UV filter.
thanks for taking the time to get these videos out
+Mario Slipac No problem. Give it a "Like"and share if you think it'll help someone you know.

How did you do that?

Thank you for the info. My 08 is plugged up.
Great vid.
Make sure you capture the run off, condense it down to recliam the ash. Smoke it, that's where they hide the good stuff!
Boil them in turkey sized fryer tubs. Light the fire and walk away. 1.5 hours med. heat or light boil.

Tastes like chickin'!
If you use this technique do you have to bake it like they say? If not how long do I have to wait to reinstall
I’m just going to build a custom set up using a hot water heater, collection drums, filters, etc. And make sure it’s legally disposed off. Haven’t done any reading on exhaust particulates disposal.
Do I need to do something with the truck computer to install them back like program the ecu? Ecu remaps
Will the same process apply to a tractor DPF?
For the record air cleaning is done in a puffer machine which does clean the filter if it was NOT OVERLOADED WITH PARTICULATE MATTER( PM) In this case the filter has to be baked for 8 hours at 1200 DEGS F then put back into the puffer to push the ash out.I have been working with DPF'S AND UREA since 2002 long before the Federal law in 2007.
hey crazy, how can you work on somethig that was not even around in 02??
i clean these professionally. we do tests before to make sure the dpf passes various tests before hand. we use a blast cabinet to blow out as much particulate as possible then move it to a high pressure water and air flush station. then again to the blast cabinet to blow out as much moisture as possible then proceed to bake the dpf for 12 hours at 1100 degrees Celsius. after all that we move it to the blast station again to get the final particulates out. our cleaning method cleans 99% of contaminates in the dpf or doc.
How long do u have to wait for it to dry
Hi The Dieseler. Thanks for video. DPF cleaning went well. Unfortunately Cascadia now not building air. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thx.
how long dose it take to dry and any methods you use to dry it i hurd cobra clean helps also
+orlando villa I tend to let them sit overnight if time allows for it and flip them periodically. If time is tight I still try to give them a couple of hours in front of a fan. I've never tried Cobra Clean so I can't really comment on it.
It’s also a good idea to pressure wash your egr
How is this done? Remove the parts from the engine? I've watched videos on rebuilding turbos and it looks cheap and effective.
What if it cracks during washing
Thank you for the video. I will do it tomorrow on the 2008 International bus I'm working on
how did it work out?
@@nunyabizness3382 it work great. Thanks for the video. Since seeing your video I've done with 2 more buses. Bus still running with no issues. Our other shop have an oven to bake it but after a few months the bus came back with same DPF issues. Since I did what you showed on the video, the buses never have anymore problems. Thanks again.
Thanks for the info. That will come in handy down the road in the future.
Do you have to wait for them to dry? If so how long? Or just rinse off then re-install?
Listening to the man here! More videos please!
How much pressure should be on pressure washer, so can't damaged filters
neat - thank you for easy and cost saving method I will try this simple method on my 2011 freightliner - btw do I've to buy new clamps to reinstall the filters or can use the old ones please let me know Thank you 😊
I've been doing this for years.
Hi does this method also apply to Mitsubishi Pajero DPF? Thanks
Hi ,.. Does it need a certain ( psi ) for the water pressure machine ? Cheers
Why hasn't anyone suggested using your oven to dry it out? If it can handle high heat cleaners, why not a house hold oven cranked up for 2 hours??
How do you get around the service life monitor that is linked to serial number on some of these filters?
Do I need to clear a code using a laptop with the software afterwards, like on some other videos? Or can I just slap them right back in and DPF light should be gone.
My Freightliner has 800,000 Miles.
If the engine light is on because it is requesting an Ash cleaning then it will most likely need to be reset with software. Detroit calls it resetting the Ash Accumulator.
Ask a dealer to reset the Soot Counter. Took three different dealers and a promise to replace it when we had the money...
what psi compressor to use? how strong? i am about to do this. thanks
I couldn't give you exact numbers. I'm not sure what the pressure washer I use is rated for. I guess a typical unit that you would use to wash a vehicle.
Thanks for being honest man. God bless!
Always!
Is there a alternative gasket to use when having to properly seat filters that have been installed improperly? Im going to try and readjust them since i see soot, but want to reuse rings since i just bought them. Is there hvac tape that can act as a new gasket?
These filters see 1100 degrees. I wouldn't recommend using anything but the seals that are intended for them.
After cleaning them how did you dry them?
I tried cleaning my dpf with water but now truck shows code P2002 which is for DPF efficiency below threshold... Any suggestions for that?
Did you let it dry out completely. If you did, maybe you need dealer to do manual regen.
@Bryan Case coffee mugs and DPFs arent even comparable lol.
But hey man, thanks for the professional opinion.
Bryan Case Coffee mugs are also coated with glass on the inside and most of the outside.
Also, what liquid is being used in FSX's machine and how it's delivered play a huge role. Not a stretch for their specialized machine to safely clean a DPF if pressure washing it doesn't.
I sent my to a shop who baked twice and still have the check engine light on
I appreciate your quick and knowledgeable response thank you so much please keep posting videos
thanks so much for the video very helpful . i did the same as the video . after the black ash came out i noticed so brown or dark orange color started coming out also. just asking myself did the filter got damege or some ?????????
You will get orange coloured particles come out it’s where these DPF filters get redhot trying to regenerate
it turns the ash to an orange colour if orange coloured water came out that’s a good sign you are flushing it out!
After the clean up .. I have to plugged the truck to a computer or any specific program. I'm asking because I don't have neither of those, just want to know thanks and keep the amazing job
Does a manual regen need to be done after cleaning?
I would suggest not to powerwash after I just did and even with the $100 power washer I did notice little damage and flaking when blowing out with compressed air. From the information that I got today it sounds like if you wash them with liquid it has to be with volume not by pressure spray
Do you have to dry them ? Or install them straight after while wet???
Blow them out w air first.
using a kettle boil few rounds of water through it
these can take the extra hot water no problem
then use the pressure washer (from far)
Whats the psi we should use on presure washer?
Can we also do the DOC?
After clean how long needs to be dry ??
Will this work for 2011 Ram 3500 ??
How strong of a pressure washer are you using and what angle tip? This was good information and thank you for sharing!
Honestly, I'm not 100% sure of the pressure washers specs. Glad I could help otherwise though.
How long should you let them dry?
How long do you let the filter dry for?
I let it sit overnight and it wasn't enough. After reinstalling water was coming. I would suggest dry with air blower and let it dry for 2-3 days minimum.
you can also drill holes on it, or spray it with water, ether way your warranty will be chopped into tinny pieces, grinded and burned right in front of you.
Right? I clean DPFs using a FSX machine. We've actually been receiving more work due to customers not being satisfied with the wet wash method.
Its ceramic lol ceramic shouldn't be wet.
@@j.e.2323 tell that to my toilet lol
Will be attempting this soon on a 2011 International DuraStar. I read through the comments and have gathered some good info. Run a parked regen before and after, replace clamps and have the soot levels/dpf reset. My question however, is there a way to reset the soot levels/dpf on my own utilizing a laptop or other form of tool? Or is going to a shop my only option?
Any insights on if this could work on a smaller car where the actual filter can't be removed in itself?
Will this work on a car? I have a BMW E90 with an old DPF
My truck is in need right now l am going to try to myself .. any more tips about how to take it out ??
Mine too. Only if I knew the way to take it out. Let me know if you find out please.
Abdul Azim is not hard man, i just took my out today.
you remove the skirts if you have any and the steps.
after that use a 10mm to remove the cover of the box, than remove the clamps from the filters and slide the front one out and do the same thing with the back one.
you will HAVE TO but the clamps, the front ones(2 clamps) are sold as a kit with the metal gasket included(2 gaskets)
The back ones are a little pricey, maybe 140-160 each, thay are sold reparately.
Some people reuse them, you will have to but some sort of sealent if decide not to buy new ones.
I recommend you buy new ones.
manuel doesn’t seem too complicated. I’ll give it a try this weekend. Thanks for taking your time to reply!
+manuel Sound advice. I would also recommend new clamps. Leaks will give you further trouble down the road.
Remember to write down the filters code, so when you get your dpf system update on the computer you will need them

where can I bring my truck to get this procedure done?
2015 freighliner cascadia evo dd15
Will this work on JD particulate filters?
I would recommend ERC machines company machines in turkey. both suitable and good quality.
If we clean out before any lights or problems , just as preventative maintenance, do we
Still need to take truck to the dealer for
Anything?(reset anything)
The Ash level should still be reset or you could get a fault code later on requesting a cleaning when it isn't needed.
How long do you let it air dry before replacing it?
You can let it cook in the truck without connecting it to the scr or you can blow it out since they hold water for a very long time
nice, appreciate it, how much pressure would u recommend??
What type of water pressure PSI what tip should I use for my pressure
What type of tip for my pressure washer
On the newer trucks would you have to reset the computer after cleaning?..thanks for the video btw
Yes that's a good point. It would be best to have a shop reset them. Detroit calls it an "Ash Accumulator". Cummins calls it DPF maintenance I believe. I'm sure every manufacturer has their own term for it. It literally only takes a minute to do.
TheDieseler
Hello sir
If i clean it myself and then go shop to reset it.They gonna reset it? Also this way keep cleaning and rolling same dpf, how long u can use original dpf ,.
Thank you for your video!
Can this be done to any dpf filter and doc ?
I got 2010 maxforce dt medium bixtruck duty.
Little smaller
Thumbs up! Thank you for being to the point. Well done!
Hi people. God blessings.
I work in truck maintenence
And yes if it works thats great
The big question is
Is it legal todo?
Would people get introuble with the Enviroment agency?
Because that soot and ashes are polluding the water.
If a truck is deleted, is it a good idea to cleant the filter anyway?
If your truck is deleted properly you don’t have the filter anymore, it’s removed (the filters are drilled out only shell is left)
@haloba5843 So, where does the exhaust/soot end up? Does it go out through the regular pipes like old-school rigs?
Can you spray them both ways?
Thank’s for your video sir it really helped me a lot
No problem. Glad to hear that!
