Hello Steve and Dawn, I must check in an thank you so much for taking the time to post this helpful and informative video!! We have a 2019 Ram 3500, 62,000 miles. Yep 4-days ago the same message Diesel Particulate Filter Full See Dealer (bring your wallet). I purchased the Rislone product put it in a quarter tank of fuel, ran for 40 miles and then filled up! Half way through that tank the message changed to "Exhaust System Regeneration in Process Continue Driving" several minutes later it was complete and return to the regular dash screen. So for the nay-sayers that say once it says "Full" it will not regenerate on its own"..... it does!!! Thanks again!!
I have a 2021 Ram 3500 Limited Mega Cab with the HO motor. I have 37k miles on it and it has been error free. Since the second tank of fuel in the truck I've been running Hot Shot Secret fuel additive that is supposed to help with REGENS and the entire fuel/exhaust system. So far just by the results I would say it's working. I do pull a 32 foot travel trailer and a dump trailer that gets up to 14k pounds when loaded up. I put one or two doses in the truck depending on how long I will be on the road. I DO NOT idle the truck for more than 10 minutes at a time. The only time I let the truck idle for a decent amount of time is after a long pull where the turbo is working hard. I will let it idle for 10 minutes or so to let the turbo cool down before shutting off the truck. Short trips and and long idle times seem to kill the modern diesel unless it has been deleted. Thank you for the info on the fuel additive that can help in this kind of situation. Good luck!
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but on the exhaust there is an injector that sprays DEF fluid into the exhaust during the regen process. That injector crystallizes because of the chemical makeup of the DEF fluid. This clogs the pray nozzle. You can take the injector out and soak it in hot water. That should is what resolved it for me. Try to do little to no idle
Finally a video that gives me a possible solution. I have a two thousand nineteen that I bought new and it only has 14,000 miles on it and I have this problem. I was gonna get up underneath with the Torch and heat the canister up to see if it would work. But I think I will try this first.
Thanks. You must check out the Banks Power video on the RAM air intake preheater tendency to drop a nut into your intake. Nasty result!! Banks has a cure!! Disclosure - I'm an Aussie and don't have a diesel!
Thank you for your wonderful video. This is for you or anybody else using these products, be very clear in what additive you have, and which tank it goes into. The maintenance additive goes in the DEF Tank itself, but thank you for introducing me to this one that goes in the DIESEL tank. Boy can a mistake there be a costly mix up.
One product is for the DPF and one is for the DEF system. It helps if you're familiar with it all (DPF/DEF/SCR, etc.) but even if you're not quite so, just know that the DEF system cleaner comes in a BLUE bottle with a smaller head on it, as most DEF tanks have a blue cap on it. The DPF cleaner comes in a black bottle. Always read the instructions before you use. I also always use a good diesel additive at every fill. I like HSS EDT because I can use just 2oz of product per 24g that I fill, and get a performance dose. Some additives work better than others, and some do more than others, do do your research, as well.

The transmission is programed to shift to the highest gear all the time. This produces very low RPMs which does not allow the particles to burn off. To solve this, override the transmission. In a ford you can lock out the transmission from shifting above a selected gear. So around town you can prevent the transmission to shift above 6 or 7th gear. This keeps the REVs up and allows the particles to burnt off.
I have a 2022 3500 that i use for towing a race trailer has 24000 miles on and im currently lemon lawing the truck cuz it goes into regen every 80 miles for 45 min and the dealer said this is like the 5th truck with a regen frequency issue they seen and they have no fix. So hopefully they will be buying it back and ill get a gmc
Follow up on mine… a month ago the entire exhaust system was replaced under warranty. Ram couldn’t figure out why the the entire system had a melt down including melting the sensors. I’m guessing they’re having real issues because they didn’t even charge me the deductible.
Diesel pick-ups are doomed if used as a grocery getter (ie short trips). Diesels run best when they run hot (e.g. towing through the mountains). Here’s my understanding applicable to your situation. Modern diesels DPFs ( diesel particulate filter) trap soot. More idling results in more rapid accumulation of soot. Soot consists of mostly tar and some ash. Regen heats up your exhaust temp and adds ammonia water (DEF fluid) helps burn tar away in form of colorless gases and water. A small amount of ash remains in your filter😂. I understand semi-DPFs may need replacement after 250K-500K miles due to ash plugging filter. Truck may be wore out by then. How do I monitor performance? I monitor DPF usage and oil temps. My F350 oil temps run 20+F hotter when I tow @217F. When highway driving not towing, I run at 198F oil temp. Highway speeds without towing @198F is minimum, but not enough to really clean your filter as you noted. Thanks to late Bill Hewitt RIP, l run ArchOil 9500 whenever I add fuel. Good advice to new diesel owners.
DEF has nothing to do with the DPF/Regen. DEF is used to reduce NOX emissions by converting NOX into nitrogen and water. It’s similar to a catalytic converter that converts hydrocarbons to water and CO2
And to add to Roch145 , DEF is injected down wind of the DPF so it does nothing for DPF or reducing soot or ash. I can't believe people are posting videos and making comments and do not understand the DPF and SCR systems and what they do and were they are inline.
There is an app you can put on your phone that uses a Bluetooth obdc adapter to force a dpf Regen. It takes about 20 mins to complete and resets the check engine light. Costs about $100.
The filter is called a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). It collects soot, and when enough soot is collected, an automatic REGEN starts. In REGEN mode, the soot does NOT get blown out, the soot gets BURNT and turns to ash. There is a guage on your dash that will indicate the % the DPF is plugged. I own a 2019 RAM with the Cummins. My REGEN procedures have kept my DPF clean. Once the DPF is full of ash (not soot), it must be removed and either replaced, or taken to an Authorized Dealer who will bake it in an oven to burn off all the ash. In Canada, it costs at least $650 to have the. DPF burned out
Thanks for the clarification on burnt vs blown. Mine was indicating full and the fluid along with towing allowed the soot to be burnt off. I’m close to a month from having the problem and everything is running great. I will keep a closer eye on the gage from now on.
Yes, but it requires an oven, and then water blown thru at high pressure to clean it out. I don't believe it can be done at home by a DIY'er @@wallheadkdir
I’m shocked it went into regen after being in limp mode. Typically that requires a manual regen by the dealer. Unless you have a obd tool that can trigger the regen manually. Regular regens will only happen when traveling at highway speeds. Figure at least 30 miles per diesel tank fill up. Dealer should have explained that when you purchased. At least you get the dash indicator. First gen DPF systems didn’t give you an indicator so you never knew when it was happening or if it was working. Sometimes fuel mileage, smell, or extra heat would give you an indication. when my 2011 Chevy went to limp mode while towing our TT, that put me over the top. The DPF was doomed at that point.
It’s normal to leave vehicle. You have 2 options. Dealer removes filter and clean. It takes 2 days. Or delete. It’s normal maintenance. I own a semi and 2018 ram myself
An additive will not clear the burnt off soot (ash) from the dpf. Only way is to remove the filter and clean it. You might’ve gotten slight relief but it’s gonna come back and bite you. Sorry to say that but it’s the truth! Per Cummins, once the filter reaches 58%ash level the filter needs to be removed and cleaned. Or code 1921 will become active then the dreaded 1922 will become active and per Cummins once 1922 is active the dpf needs to be replaced!
As a semi truck driver that has to deal with these def filters on the regular for years, do yourself a favor and dont fill your def from the pump at stations, buy the boxed DEF, its more expensive but better quality. Personally, I would just get an older truck, no def systems and and maintenance is easy to do yourself.
Learn how to clean your def injector. Crystals form on the def injector spray nozzle. Think of your garden hose set to a wide spray pattern. Now block off half the spray with your hand. Same in your exhaust system. Only half is cleaned with def spray.
What engine oil have you been using? That's usually the culprit of the Metallic Oxide ash that won't pass thru the 10um DPF filter, it can't be burnt, only removed or chemically dissolved
I have a service plan with Ram to have it done on a regular basis. So it’s what the dealership recommends and puts in. I have had a more serious issue that I’m going through right now (video to follow). I’ll elaborate on it later but bad news is the exhaust system had a melt down… good news is it’s all covered under warranty… bad news Is we are temporarily stranded in Pennsylvania.
Hi guys! Thank you for this video and for sharing this very important and big money saving information. I only have a question: on the bottle box, the instructions say "Drive vehicle at a lower gear than you normally would for 20 to 30 miles". What does that mean? Does it mean to drive at low speed or high rpm? Shall I drive at low speed say 35 mph? or does it mean to drive at 60 mph but high rpm? Please clarify. If anyone can share their experience, it is much appreciated.
Yes driving in lower gear range keeps RPM higher. Most diesels redline at 3500 or lower so maintaining 2500 to 3000 rpm makes for higher exhaust temps. I found getting out on highway and floor boarding pedal (with no constraints on gear selection) to 80-90 mph and quickly removing foot off pedal and letting exhaust brake kick-in and bring it back down to 50 mph and then doing this over and over 10-15 times helps a lot. The exhaust brake brings 65 to 70 psi of exhaust pressure to help blow out the soot as it burns off. Just be sure you are in a safe place on highway (little traffic) to do this though.
I add atf for lubricity in the fuel. Using it for 40 years. When I worked for Cummins it was a cheap way to clean the injector tips and keep them clean. Automatic transmission fluid added to the fuel tank. There is no lubricity additive put into #2 or #1 diesel fuel today. That’s one of the reasons why the cp4 fuel pumps fail.
The problem is the Def injector being clogged with crystals. Also, the opening into the DPF filter. Fix:. Remove the injector; two 10 mm nuts. Turn the injector 90 degrees. Use hot water and a acid brush and brush until the crystals dissolve . Be sure to observe the screen on the injector is visible. Do this cleaning every 3-6 months. Continue using your cleaner. End of problem!
@@red281gt Disagree. The Def injector mounts into the DPF filter. I only addressed the crystal formation on the injector & DPF opening. Agree your on to a total system cleaning which I intend on doing. My problem started when I got a dash warning "DPF filter full, reduced power, see dealer". They manual regened it x 2. Couldn't tell me why it plugged up. Tried to charge me... I balked an got the GM involved. Zeroed my invoice. Saw another video about the injector issue. Removed it and it was completely clogged with crystals. DEF was dripping vs spraying.??? That was the problem.
@@tedgtfan interesting on my 23 it's doc>dpf>scr>tailpipe. They probably realized spraying def before the dpf caused more dpf problems. I mean, logically spraying something that's majority water with sooty exhaust would gunk things up quicker and marginally cooling the dpf when you want it hot.
I've been driving rams with the cummins for 30 years and I'm done with them. The cummins is already very expensive to operate and maintain. With the cost of fuel averaging between .35 and as much as a dollar more than regular, oil changes and fuel filters average over $300 and then all the added fun with DEF, regen issues and clogged DPF's I'm over it. Getting rid of my 2022 with only 22K on her and switching back to gas. She's currently in the shop for yet another go at the DPF.
I checked out my video and my truck and what you’re seeing is the result of a wide angle lens of the GoPro giving the illusion. It does look really bad in the video but my truck is very much aligned. Thanks for noticing though. If it was messed up I would want to know.
I have 2022 Dodge ram 3500 and I saw this message ((Exhaust System Service Required)) Do you think this this product is will work for me?? Please help me, thank you And it says also see the dealer
My message was exhaust filter full, power reduced. See the dealer. This worked for me. I would suggest to try it and see if it corrects the issue first. It won’t hurt to try. If it doesn’t work then definitely see the dealer.
2 DPF TRUCKS RAM never even seen a message 160k on first up to 28k on this one 1st was a 16 so no dpf filter gauge. But 2nd is a 21 with dpf gauge it’s allways on zero or close to that. Now I drive 1 hour to work and 1 hour back each week 1 time a week top off my fuel tank every week 8 to 10 gallons a week I always use hot shots secret edt and winter formula and twice a year there diesel extreme no problems and I have no affiliation with them and I drive big truck up to 144k a year biggest problem dpf on big rig so my point is I’d try this product and see what happens BTY I top off my fuel every week an ad a splash in tank yes my fuel is way dieluted but have not had any problems.
Also I use only fleet guard or OEM Filters and I use all ams oil in everything but the tranny cause I have a aisin trans change all air and fuel filters annually change oil and filter every 5k and ignore what truck tells me in dash.
I just had a major issue with the exhaust system. (Video on that coming soon). The dealership ran a test to determine if there was ever gasoline in the diesel tank. If their was it would have violated the warranty and I would have not been covered for the repairs. If this does work I wouldn’t advise it till your warranty expires.
Hot Shot Secret every other tank or so and the engine will not even need to Regen, or at the very least it will cut them in half. Just don't get it on anything bc it smells bad. It is an amazing product.
I use the regular EDT and maybe Archoil AR6500 like every 6 -8th fil up. I like the Archoil AR6500 but nobody keeps it in stock local. With Archoil the bottle is longer and easier to fill in the tank on the Cummins but on my Dramax the fill nozzle on my flatbed is much easier to use EDT. The EveryDay treatment is a milder fuel treatment while the Extreme is just that a concreated cleaner design to be use like 1 a year or so or as needed. EDT can be used "Everyday" to keep your fuel treated, injector tips clean to improve spray patterns. So forme EDT all the time, and Extreme during fuild+filter changes.
Another solution would’ve been to buy one of the tuners on the market and it would’ve allowed you to do forced regen cycle to clear the filter out for you. The tuners cost a good few shillings but still cheaper than what that dealership wanted.

I’m about to do this and the bottle of Rislone says to add to the DEF fluid tank NOT THE DIESEL FUEL TANK. IT could harm your motor if added to the fuel tank. Please read the bottle and make sure. Don’t want to see you ruin your engine.
Edit: looks like they have another option which is what I got. It’s Rislone Diesel DEF&SCR EMISSIONS SYSTEM CLEANER. This particular product goes into the Def tank. My apologies for the confusion.
Our truck has 100,000 miles, 95% of this is hwy driving while towing 10 to 20 thousand lbs. The DPF is still f….d. Manual regens, EGR cleaning, new air filters, oil, additives, etc, nothing works. All the dealer say is let’s replace the DPF and pray ($3,500). There’s something fundamentally wrong with this system which dodge doesn’t want to talk about
Your are dumb!…First off there’s heavy fines if you are caught. second off if the truck is under warranty or even if it’s not warranty and you have a problem with it, dealers will not work on it. If you remove emissions controls, the truck has to be completely custom tuned. Then you run into all kinds of issues with the check engine, light and sensors acting funny. and when you go to try to pass emissions, they will look right underneath that truck, and they will raise the hood and take a good look to see what’s under there and they know exactly what they’re looking for TRUST ME…. So if you can afford to spend 8 90 120k on a truck and you want to delete your truck, because you know everything , by all means you go for it!!.. And believe me if deleting the truck was the answer why do you think banks power hasn’t done it, they specifically say, do not mess with the emissions controls under no circumstances, and the products that they come out with are emissions compliant. You’re not a smart dude!..
if you delete that truck dealers won’t work on it go to parts store get hot shot secret EDT extream diesel treat run you truck tank down every time when you fill up put one ounce of hot shot secret edt it will do you right it’s not what he is trying to sell you
Glad your on the road but dont kid yourself. No liquid magic potion from autozone exists to fix modern emision diesel engines. DPF, Cat converter and DEF aftertreatment issues are a constant repair job at our heavy duty diesel shop. Cummins, Duramax or Power Stroke, doesn't matter, all have problems. It is what it is. Use Stanadyn fuel treatment for the high pressure fuel pump health and watch idle time.
If they only knew about all the soot on those valves , from these modern diesel's . New Government GSA trucks have all emissions deleted for diesel trucks they buy that is very telling
That’s not the issue, the DPF and or sensors are defective and need to be replaced with revised components. When an emission issue is detected, the system goes through self testing to ensure it’s working correctly. It’s at this point the pending “reduced power” message is displayed. But, if the defective components are out of spec, the self testing continues and with it the count down to reduced power. So the correct fix is to have the defective components replaced, the replaced sensors reset and a service bay test conducted to confirm proper operation. I know because I’ve been there… Also, diesel fuel quality is greatly inconsistent due to its quality not mandated as tightly as gasoline. We can thank the EPA for that misery. Our only defense against poor quality fuel is a diesel fuel additive with lubricants and cetane number booster.
Yes i believe this is true. Which is why they have auto engine cutoff after 15 mins of idling on newer trucks. They clog up the more they idle. Run em hard and hot, regens maintain the dpf pretty well
First, it's illegal in all 50 states. Second, some of us have to run our vehicles through inspection every few years. If it's deleted what are we supposed to do, put everything back to stock? I agree, deleting would be nice and I'd do it but it's not feasible financially.
@RichiLew1 I hear ya. Some of us don't have to worry about emissions inspections every year so deleting trucks is standard practice once that warranty is done
@dannatashag.2156 If I lived somewhere where I could get away with it, I definitely would! I hate having DPF/ SCR and DEF related issues! It sucks but I'm stuck keeping it stock 😕

Dealer didn’t warn us about anything…typical dealer.
It’s normal to leave vehicle. You have 2 options. Dealer removes filter and clean. It takes 2 days. Or delete. It’s normal maintenance. I own a semi and 2018 ram myself
I put high idle on my 09 and haven’t had any issues with it not regenerating
An additive will not clear the burnt off soot (ash) from the dpf. Only way is to remove the filter and clean it. You might’ve gotten slight relief but it’s gonna come back and bite you. Sorry to say that but it’s the truth! Per Cummins, once the filter reaches 58%ash level the filter needs to be removed and cleaned. Or code 1921 will become active then the dreaded 1922 will become active and per Cummins once 1922 is active the dpf needs to be replaced!
Thanks for the info
As a semi truck driver that has to deal with these def filters on the regular for years, do yourself a favor and dont fill your def from the pump at stations, buy the boxed DEF, its more expensive but better quality.
Personally, I would just get an older truck, no def systems and and maintenance is easy to do yourself.
I had heard that and stopped buying def at the pump a few years ago. Thanks for the info
On your semi, what differences did you feel when you bought the boxed DEF?
Boy they say we marry someone who looks like "us" , you guys could pass as brother and sister, NOT IN A BAD WAY!!! Peace and thank you.
Curious to know what DEF you're using. Also, if you used diesel additives prior to this incident. If so, which one
I did not use any additives prior the the problem. I had been using Walmarts brand but have switched to Blue Def
Learn how to clean your def injector. Crystals form on the def injector spray nozzle.
Think of your garden hose set to a wide spray pattern. Now block off half the spray with your hand. Same in your exhaust system. Only half is cleaned with def spray.
Use Rislone def additive and Stanadyne fuel additive.
Use Lucas dpf deep clean and no idling
High RPMs. Keep it around 2000 to 2500. Better at higher speeds but keep rpms up
Yes driving in lower gear range keeps RPM higher.
That's happening to me right now
2 cycle engine oil to lube the pump
Def injector has no baring on the diesel particulate filter as the def injector and scr is after the dpf.
@@red281gt scr is before the DPF on Rams
@@red281gt SCR is before DPF on my 2019 and 2020 Rams. DPF's are the last component before end tailpipe out
@@tedgtfan interesting on my 23 it's doc>dpf>scr>tailpipe.
Thanks for sharing that. Mine will be going in when I get back to home base in October
Never had these issues with my Fords. I do use Hot Shot or Archoil fuel additives and always use Shell T6 oil. I get over 10k miles out a tank of DEF
Dude. From my perspective looking at the tire on the truck behind you, it looks like the tire is not aligned. Looks like it's leaning in at the top.
I checked out my video and my truck and what you’re seeing is the result of a wide angle lens of the GoPro giving the illusion. It does look really bad in the video but my truck is very much aligned. Thanks for noticing though. If it was messed up I would want to know.
I have 2022 Dodge ram 3500 and I saw this message ((Exhaust System

Do you think this this product is will work for me??
Please help me, thank you
And it says also see the dealer
My message was exhaust filter full, power reduced. See the dealer. This worked for me. I would suggest to try it and see if it corrects the issue first. It won’t hurt to try. If it doesn’t work then definitely see the dealer.
@@ourroadtocamelot thank you very much
2 DPF TRUCKS RAM never even seen a message 160k on first up to 28k on this one 1st was a 16 so no dpf filter gauge.
I’ll check into that.
If a truck not being driven enough when those messages come up easily way fix it force the regen your self with ob2 tool
Clear Diesel (Power Service). Your AZ short drives are a problem. Double the dose if you think there is a problem
I actually am planning on doing a double dose in a half a tank on my next travel day of about 200 miles.
Did you ever pull the OBDII code?
No. Not sure exactly what that means
@@ourroadtocamelot did you ever have an engine diagnostic scan done to pull the error codes? Would have seen beneficial to know that info.
So once it gets to 1/4 and add the cleaner. Do you top it off with diesel also?
Top it off after you drive 40 miles or so.
750ml of petrol - 30ltrs diesel will burn the soot out in the dpf
I just had a major issue with the exhaust system. (Video on that coming soon). The dealership ran a test to determine if there was ever gasoline in the diesel tank. If their was it would have violated the warranty and I would have not been covered for the repairs. If this does work I wouldn’t advise it till your warranty expires.
Hot Shot Secret every other tank or so and the engine will not even need to Regen, or at the very least it will cut them in half. Just don't get it on anything bc it smells bad. It is an amazing product.
Everyday Diesel or Diesel Xtreme?
@@kfelix2934 thanks for the info!
Def/Egr delete with 85hp tune will solve this problem.
Another solution would’ve been to buy one of the tuners on the market and it would’ve allowed you to do forced regen cycle to clear the filter out for you. The tuners cost a good few shillings but still cheaper than what that dealership wanted.
@@sweetshot_177 just buy a scanner the does it

@@cheetahtransport939 please tell which scanner does this, I haven't found one yet that will clear an active code or let you start a regen while code is active. Buy it either way and do at least one forced regen a week to avoid potential problems.
Did you add straight into the diesel tank or def tank?
That additive goes into the diesel tank
I’m about to do this and the bottle of Rislone says to add to the DEF fluid tank NOT THE DIESEL FUEL TANK. IT could harm your motor if added to the fuel tank. Please read the bottle and make sure. Don’t want to see you ruin your engine.
Edit: looks like they have another option which is what I got. It’s Rislone Diesel DEF&SCR EMISSIONS SYSTEM CLEANER. This particular product goes into the Def tank. My apologies for the confusion.
Using OEM recommended Blue DEF will lessen your issues.

@@andreysimakov5199 That sucks to hear. Hopefully you find someone that can fix your truck for a reasonable price and it lasts for years to come.
Delete dpf , problem solve
But there’s a hefty fine for deleting or messing with the exhaust system
Make air worse for everyone duh even though the hp that diesels output hasn't gone down over the years when dpf was introduced.
You’re not a smart dude!..
if you delete that truck dealers won’t work on it go to parts store get hot shot secret EDT extream diesel treat run you truck tank down every time when you fill up put one ounce of hot shot secret edt it will do you right it’s not what he is trying to sell you
Delete that truck. And all your problems will go away
How much does it cost to delete a truck. Thx.
The key is not to ever idle the truck. Try and idle no more that 1 hour a week, 4 hours a month, or 50 hours a year. Do this and you’ll be fine
Thanks for the input
I’ve had over 10 cars in my lifetime butnow own a diesel. is it ever necessary to let the turbo cool off?
@@topgearshoppe5693you want to let the turbo cool off after every drive. You want the egt to be at 250 degrees or less
I know because I’ve been there…
Also, diesel fuel quality is greatly inconsistent due to its quality not mandated as tightly as gasoline.
Run em hard and hot, regens maintain the dpf pretty well
Just get the emissions crap deleted
I am registered in a state where I could possibly get away with it however I just had the whole thing replaced and paid for under warranty (video coming). It is tempting but I would lose any chance of trading it in if I decide to get a new truck.
You should not buy a ford
