The Ali shuffle itself is a quick switching of the feet, there isn't much to the move other than that if you backpedal a lot and switch direction a guy will find it hard to catch you, so it's a great way to showboat. Ali had amazing footwork, but the shuffle itself is really meant to showboat.
I think you are right on the money for the up and comers. I still like to go back to the older guys like Leonard, Pernell W, Ali, Tyson, Chavez jr. etc
Well, what I need to do is a video on the backpedal step, which I haven't done yet. But to fight like Ali is another thing. I can break down the techniques and you can imitate as best you can. This is pretty much what sugar ray leonard did, watch him in his early pro fights, it's a mini Ali
I love this video and how you explain that it actually is OK to move the trailing foot first rather than the leading foot. A lot of boxing tutorials claim that it's never OK to move the back foot first. That shuffle step also comes in real handy if you want to kick.
yes most boxing tutorials are made for beginners and so they won't get into this, plus from a sideways angle there are a number of adantages. Also the kick too, thx for mentioning that.
Up and comers will do well to master these shuffle steps. You cant hurt what you cant touch and with these shuffle steps properly incorporated into an effective offense and active defense, you'll be very hard to beat. Once again, right on the money Coach!
A lot of people love the philly shell these days, and it's a good defense, it's just that a lot of beginners have a hard time blocking the right hand with the shoulder, plus in the amateurs if the opponent catches the top side of your head with a punch he's gonna get the point and that will give him the edge in winning the fight. You gotta remember that most of the pro's did not use the philly shell in the amateurs. You gotta go by your situation.
you will enjoy it for rory's footwork, his distancing and his use of the jab, combinations off the jab, work to the body and great use of fakes. He must have been watching your vids bro! :D
Great vid as always ! Will be applied asap, I do that from time to time, I didnt realize what I was doing though before I saw it explained. Now I'll be more awere of it and train on it. Ty
yea sometimes you just pick things up and do them as you say, it's not always easy to teach what I know, you really have to think of how it breaks down. I appreciate the comment.
Second video I watched, after one year break from a shoulder injury , this newbie just wanted to touch base again and be inspired by some vids.... thank you so much bro...subscribed and appreciated. Hope you are around to answer some questions one day I can see what I can do for you regarding my own skills and experiences in other non sport areas. once again thank you brother.
Thanks for the heads up about Sugar Ray I'll look into it. I just want to try all my avenues as far as changing the rhythm and tempo while boxing in the ring. And I haven't had a chance to really employ Ali's techniques as far as movement and what not.
Ur splitting hairs bro and just trying to look for shit, basically missing the point of the entire video. When I move fast I AM on the ball of the foot, just watch from 3:30 - 3:40. When you shuffle sideways and walk it aint no thing to let the heel touch, they are big steps to cover distance. It's not like when you move forward. There are exceptions to everything in boxing, only amateurs think the guidelines apply in EVERY scenario.
Awesome. I havent done this drill in a while im going to have add this to training. On a side note I dont dance. I grew up under tye bielf that real men dont dance but this will be awesome to do if I ever needed to dance
Great stuff! I appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge. Could you add in a piece -- or possibly even in another video -- where you break the 4-step down by each step: step 1, do this; step 2, do this, step 3:...; and step 4: do this. I feel like some times i have trouble following along because i won't quite grasp some of the steps. When you've gone through the technique (tactic?), s...l...o...w...l...y, one step at a time, I always feel like i have an opportunity to get all hte steps correct. Thanks for all your work!!!
Don't know if you follow MMA at all but Rory Mcdonald was pulling out the Ali shuffle last night against Bj Penn. It was a great fight for Rory but yeah it's really only for the showboating.
Yeeee this dude knows what he's talking about, beautiful footwork
Is he teaching to move sideways by crossing our feet? Dont get me wrong the move is valid but it has to be the excemption not the standard you use.

Very smooth movement beautiful to watch
exactly, cant hurt what you cant touch, i dig it
man, I just started out with boxing and your videos are a real great help. Thanks for your efforts!
Yes, I've been planning on making a video on that for awhile. it's called backpedaling. Sugar Ray was also very effective with it
Is this how Mayweather boxes?
People have been telling me that my back foot should be pointing foward and not 45
When is the back peddle video coming coach
I think you are right on the money for the up and comers. I still like to go back to the older guys like Leonard, Pernell W, Ali, Tyson, Chavez jr. etc

thx my man, that's a true compliment
Its also obvious that you haven't watched my other vids. Ok thats all you're gonna get. peace
You are poetry in motion, man I now understand the shuffle.
so smooth. .. boxing footwork is the best... whatever you're learning
thx my man!
thank you!
I follow the major events in MMA, at least most of them, I'll have to check out Rory's work in that fight!
I've been paying close attention to my footwork. This video was extremely helpful.
Love the drill.
thank you so much for the breakdown. really useful!
I learned this from Jason, and I learned the L step from Coach Rick. You can mix the 2 up and change directions quickly.
I love this video and how you explain that it actually is OK to move the trailing foot first rather than the leading foot. A lot of boxing tutorials claim that it's never OK to move the back foot first.

Thank you for this video, I've nearly mastered it, so helpful. Thanks boss
Bro I wish I filmed yesterday. This move solved one of the main holes in my defense. I finally pieced somebody up in sparring

Love how you use your imagination, to instruct - that will be homework for the day!

I was looking for a video on this. Perfect! You did it again bro. You're the man. Thanks again.
Very smooth, thx for sharing, it is very clear instruction
Keep posting your video, coach.
Greet from Indonesia.
Very underrated video. Can you make a new one on the topic (side shuffle, backpedaling, etc)?

haha, thanks man!

lol thx, to purchase dvds just go to my blog, the link is in the description above.
Finally found someone to show me that. Thank you.
no, just quick switching of the feet, you would do a full stance shift if you planned on going into that stance, at least that's what I recommend.
Great vid as always ! Will be applied asap, I do that from time to time, I didnt realize what I was doing though before I saw it explained. Now I'll be more awere of it and train on it. Ty
Thanks JT Van V for the video, good defensive foot work drill for better agility when in the ring, and as you say want to jab from the outside,
many thanks coach. I have finally learned this complex step drill.
It's old, but gold! :)
I want to watch practicals more than instructions and this video is much better than others thanks

Fundamentally boxing -is- a dance, except you want to disrupt your opponent's rhythm.
Dancing with hitting people :D
