Kevin flynn i was a freshman at mason when they made their run.. grew up a local my whole life and mason was a nobody.. i watched this game with my dad and when we won.. oh man. feeling is unreal. I still get goosebumps watching these.. so much pride. this game put us on the map. tears..
This was the lowest moment of my entire time at UConn. It was a humbling experience for the entire student body because George Mason flat out outplayed a team that had six (6) NBA drafted players on it. The fact they won is an amazing story and why we love March Madness. I only hope that this year's UConn team remembers and they beat Michigan State on Saturday and win the championship on Monday! Go UConn!!!
I like that this video is nostalgic for two reasons: The Cinderella run itself, and that it was posted in the second year of UA-cam’s existence. It’s like an artifact from thousands of years ago.
Bill Raftery is easily the best commentator ever. ONIONS! I thought UConn probably had the best team in the country that year. What an improbable run by George Mason. They set the table for VCU & Butler later.
Man i can't belive its been 12 years it feels like this happen yesterday I was still in high school when they went on this run every body in dc md and va was lit mason was the talk of whole DMV area every where ppl was talking about geroge mason this and geroge mason that it was nice it really felt like we was about to get a Championship
I'm a huge UConn fan, and it took me years to be able to even look at stills from this game, but I have a ton of respect for that GMU team. They wanted it and they friggin' took it from us.
One of the greatest underdogs to reach the Final Four. I remember being at the Final Four that year in 2006 in Indianapolis, rooting for GMU against Florida all the way. I remember going into the restroom after the devastating loss, and seeing a die-hard Mason fan by the sink crying like a baby. Sad.
2 players are now in Philippine Basketball Association(PBA) beats 3 or more players are now in National Basketball Association (NBA). 2 players played in George Mason are local Gabe Norwood and Import Jai Lewis
That's what i love about college basketball. All these kids in big ass schools are gonna go to the NBA. And the others who dream of basketball everyday who play for small schools put everything on the line because they don't know if they are going to the NBA or not but they have the heart to put everything on the line to win a game. That's what the NBA needs in teams.
I remember watching this game in county jail ( I was in there for DUI probation violation, I know it sucks). In any event, I've never seen so many happy, disgruntles inmates. We were all hooting and hollering like nuts, a guard was even watching it with us and he even cracked a smile. Crazy game. GMU was amazing that postseason, too bad they lost to eventual champion, Florida.
All these college kids going to the big time sports schools. Uconn, North Carolina, Texas, Alabama, etc. It was really special having that big game experience with a mid major commuter school. Too bad that Florida team had 4 NBA players on it (Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Taurean Green). They just outsized and outmatched us. VCU doing it a few years later wasn't the same, because before Mason nobody thought it was possible. But man they were so clutch that night. I remember watching the game and saying wow after they kept hitting all those tough shots.
i had them losing to WSU. Being a WSU fan, I wanted a rematch from a BraketBuster game earlier that season. I knew they were a good team, but i didn't expect this to happen! Even though they beat my team a game earlier, I couldn't help but be happy for them!
as a uconn fan this really kills me every time i see it. if we had won this game calhoun and uconn would have 4 national titles not 3. Props to george mason great game. go huskies, still won it last year so im happy.
I still can't believe one guy by the name of George Mason beat all these teams singlehandedly. This Mason guy should have been the #1 pick in the NBA Draft with all that talent! Seriously, though, it was a hell of a run for that team. I highly doubt we'll see another like this in a long, long time.
Being a Gator fan, it was so hard to not root for this team. To beat Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut along with Wichita State. They were an exciting team!
I remember this game too well. I am a UConn alum and before this game started I was nervous. GM had a great team that year and they were playing really well. Sometimes the big schools lose. That is what makes the tournament great. I hope another small school does it again some day. I just hope UConn is not the team that gets beat.
No one on espn.com (out of over 10 million entries) had correctly picked The Final 4 that year on their brackets! Less than 1/10th of 1 percent even had George Mason making The Final 4 that year. LSU also was an unranked team that had relatively few pick them on their brackets. It's tough enough to make it through the 1st Thursday slate of games with a perfect record. Anyone can pick an upset or two...however avoiding picking the wrong upsets that never happen is also tough. That's why it's easier to win Powerball three drawings in a row...than it is to fill out a perfect NCAA Bracket!
Paul Lentz I always pick the wrong upsets lol. I remember in 2013 3 of the 4 12 seeds won. Crazy thing is for the past 5 straight years a 7 seed or lower has made the final four. Always tough picking the right upsets.
George Mason was more of a Cinderella/Underdog team than was Butler last year. Butler was ranked for most of the season, so even though it was a great run, this was more historic.
this was a hell of a run. this is why you cant count out the lower seeds and why you gotta think twice about filling out your bracket :D. I CANT WAIT TILL THE TOURNEY STARTS!!!!!!!!!!
this was a hell of a run. this is why you cant count out the lower seeds and why you gotta think twice before you fill out your bracket :D I CANT WAIT TILL THE TOURNEY STARTS!!!!!!!!!!
@kyle7holt I know this comment's a year old, but I just wanna say something. I don't think Butler was expected 2 get passed the Sweet 16, and they made it 2 the title game which was 6 miles away from their campus. They knocked off 3 solid squads after beating 2 low seeds, they were inches away from a title, and they only have 4 to 6 thousand kids. GMU's run was more impressive, but Butler had a somewhat magical run as well.
@pmoya80 I agree, as impressive at Butler's run was, they were still a solid 5 seed, and a legitimate contender. Very few and I mean VERY few people thought George Mason would even knock out 6 seeded Michigan State in the first round, who many believed were under seeded. Great March Madness memories.
@IIshotz75II If you remember AJ Price was suspended that year due to the laptop situation. He was supposed to be the back up to Williams and be able to break down the defense off the dribble. He also would have provided a better defender on the perimeter as well, Remember Albany's guards and Patrick Sparks on Kentucky beating UConn players off the dribble? You know your team is slow if that happens.
watching this game was so frustrating as a uconn fan. in OT we were playing great defense contesting every basket but George Mason could not miss any of those circus shots. ugggh
this was uconns most loaded team ever, strangely enough, andrew bynum could have been on this team but he skipped and went straight the nba. Uconn laid the biggest egg ever in their history here.
Why doesn't ESPN do a 30 for 30 on this run? What are they waiting for, it writes itself!
They didn't win it all though lol
+David Dacorro still a hell of a story. The should do the cinderellas that came short. Butler, VCU, George Mason ect.
+Memorex996 might as well add Syracuse now
Tony Liu only big difference is not one player in the country looked at the bracket and wondered. "Who the fuck is Syracuse?"
Kevin flynn i was a freshman at mason when they made their run.. grew up a local my whole life and mason was a nobody.. i watched this game with my dad and when we won.. oh man. feeling is unreal. I still get goosebumps watching these.. so much pride. this game put us on the map. tears..
“By George, the dream is alive!” Is my favorite announcer comment ever.
AngryPlatypus 1 Not “Do you believe in Miracles?”
I was literally thinking this same thing! :D
Nah bruh....it was pretty wack..."little roller down to first...it gets by Buckner...and the Mets win it!!
“Pull my finger” Jimmy the Greek
"By George, the dream is alive!" One of the best Cinderellas in the history of the NCAA. Butler this year was similar.
Go UConn!!!
Crazy this was actually uploaded in 06
Rockysays1024 first year of UA-cam damn
Yes, I know it's hard to believe, but the world actually existed back then.
2nd year of UA-cam you mean
Yeah, you can tell because of the CANCERp resolution.
One of the Greatest Calls of all Time! 😁
"By George The Dream is Still Alive! "
I like that this video is nostalgic for two reasons: The Cinderella run itself, and that it was posted in the second year of UA-cam’s existence. It’s like an artifact from thousands of years ago.
As a George Mason student, let me tell you how crazy the school was when we all watched this at our university together on the jumbo screen. NUTS!!!!
I was so Proud as I'm always when a DC ,Md,& VA Area School Makes it to the Dance and then ends up in the Final Four gotta Embrace it 😊
My favorite march madness of all time. I absolutely loved the ride they took you on as a fan. I was only a sophomore in highschool
By far one of the greatest final four runs I’ve witnessed 💯 still remember watching this as child.
Bill Raftery is easily the best commentator ever. ONIONS!
I thought UConn probably had the best team in the country that year. What an improbable run by George Mason. They set the table for VCU & Butler later.
George Mason & VCU & Butler thanks for the recent memories!!!
I still get chills from this...unbelievable moment.
“By George, the dream is alive!!”
Being from Virginia and my parents being GMU alums to was amazing to see in 2006.
I'm a huge UConn fan, and it took me years to be able to even look at stills from this game, but I have a ton of respect for that GMU team. They wanted it and they friggin' took it from us.
This March Madness tournament is one to remember. This was a great game.
I was there in attendance. What a game!
And now Jim Larranaga has Miami in the Final Four, two wins away from a national championship.
And he lost to Uconn funny how things go full circle ‼️
One of the greatest runs in the history of sports. If it's going to happen again, though, this would be the year....
Fairfax is a pretty boring town but it felt so alive in March 2006. It will never feel like that again
That's what i love about college basketball. All these kids in big ass schools are gonna go to the NBA. And the others who dream of basketball everyday who play for small schools put everything on the line because they don't know if they are going to the NBA or not but they have the heart to put everything on the line to win a game. One of the best games I've ever witnessed
Folarin's shot at 1:34 was such a dagger... what a play.
Johnson Center Third Floor memories...
this was my favorite memory of the ncaa tournament and im not even a george mason fan, i cant imagine what it was like for them
I was at that game and It was such a great atmosphere.
Just as fitting, larranaga is playing against uconn in the final four
agreed, always ranked as one of the top shots in GMU basketball history
and 5 years later VCU is now in the same position.
im not a VCU fan, but i love a good underdog! LETS GO VCU FINAL FOUR BABY!!!!!
All these college kids going to the big time sports schools. Uconn, North Carolina, Texas, Alabama, etc. It was really special having that big game experience with a mid major commuter school. But man they were so clutch that night. I remember watching the game and saying wow after they kept hitting all those tough shots.
Greatest college basketball game ever.
i can't get enough of this video...i love being a George Mason Patriot
This was a well put together video.
I was at this game in DC with my father what a game this was!!
As was I. Great memories. I still have photos from that game.
I just did, man...Awesome game. That's why I love March Madness. :)
It was so great to watch the faces of UConn after that loss, they tthoughtt they were going to march on so easily past Mason.
That 3 that Marcus Williams hit at end of OT was CLUTCH! I was hoping he would make it in the NBA
it was not just a upset, it was one of the best basketball games i ever watched
i had them losing to WSU. Being a WSU fan, I wanted a rematch from a BraketBuster game earlier that season. I knew they were a good team, but i didn't expect this to happen! Even though they beat my team a game earlier, I couldn't help but be happy for them!
"what can Brown do for YOU!" god i love bill raftery. ONIONS!
as a uconn fan this really kills me every time i see it. if we had won this game calhoun and uconn would have 4 national titles not 3. Props to george mason great game. go huskies, still won it last year so im happy.

Seriously, though, it was a hell of a run for that team. I highly doubt we'll see another like this in a long, long time.
easily the best tournament moment in the last decade
Commentators were clearly rooting for UCONN
I saw this and then remembered I live 15 minutes from gmu
Loved it!
Being a Gator fan, it was so hard to not root for this team. To beat Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut along with Wichita State. They were an exciting team!
love that call
i remember being so happy for denham brown for making the buzzer beating layup, and then screaming at him for not trying to do the same in overtime
man i love to see these old ncaa games and try to find the nba stars
I remember this game too well. I am a UConn alum and before this game started I was nervous. GM had a great team that year and they were playing really well. Sometimes the big schools lose. That is what makes the tournament great. I hope another small school does it again some day. I just hope UConn is not the team that gets beat.
one of the greatest march madness games ever
What an amazing run...one of the all-time great sports stories.
Oh, guess what??? They're BAAAAACK!!!
@ungeth Mason is now officially a residential school. It also has the largest residential community in VA of any college.
BY GEORGE! THE DREAM IS ALIVE!
No one on espn.com (out of over 10 million entries) had correctly picked The Final 4 that year on their brackets! Less than 1/10th of 1 percent even had George Mason making The Final 4 that year. LSU also was an unranked team that had relatively few pick them on their brackets.

Same Here!!
I get "goosebumps" everytime I see this video; I hope that Brown still misses the shot. GO MASON!!!
"By George, the dream is alive!" Wonder how long he rehearsed that one? :P
Easily the best tournament moment of all time
Best game ever. UConn has 4 NBAers on that team and should of crushed GMU. GMU had a 3 star rating as the highest. Greatest game ever. Simply Magical
man that was tight, love to see it again
-homer medici Did ur dad die
i didnt even know george mason was a college until this tournament. thats how big of a story it was
Wow! this is amazing just because Geroge Mason is the closed colleges around me. I've seen a couple George Mason games but not in 2006 though.
I'm a Mason Alum '03. Was working in DC when this went down and went to this game.
Larranaga does it again
I love how what GMU did is now pretty common, VCU did it, butler has done it 2 years in a row, and one of them may very well win it
What a Year, What a Run!!!
This looks like it's from 1996 rather than 2006! Holy crap!!!
man i remeber this when i was a kid it shock the world everyone has a chance reminds me of kansas lost to that team...iowa state i think ?
@pmoya80 Butler was ranked all year too right? and they were a 5th seed?
Man that UConn team had NBA talent all over the place.
George Mason was more of a Cinderella/Underdog team than was Butler last year.
Butler was ranked for most of the season, so even though it was a great run, this was more historic.
Yay Mason! Final four baby!
Did ur dad die
this was a hell of a run. this is why you cant count out the lower seeds and why you gotta think twice about filling out your bracket :D. I CANT WAIT TILL THE TOURNEY STARTS!!!!!!!!!!
And all these years later Tony Skin has been hired as George Mason's head coach.
this was a hell of a run. this is why you cant count out the lower seeds and why you gotta think twice before you fill out your bracket :D I CANT WAIT TILL THE TOURNEY STARTS!!!!!!!!!!

I want to see a mid major in my lifetime win it all!
UNLV the last, was just getting into NCAAs...my alma mater won it in '63 not born yet, so I'm with you!!!!
This is why I love March Madness!
And Witchta State :-P ... who was also a surprise team in the tournament that season
I'm on the current 2016 basketball team for Mason they have the talent to make another historic run
no you're not, i go to GMU fucking liar
King Ross see me infront of Robinson on Monday bitch! 11am be there or shut the fuck up
Seemore Dicks I would but I have class innovation smh
King Ross then at the hub at 12
Boi if you were on the team why would you say they and not we. Idiot
@IIshotz75II

George Mason University Basketball is the best in the country. Go Patriots!!!!!!!
Joe Lop gm is trash lmao
*****
George Mason University Basketball is the best in the country. Go Patriots!!!!!!!
Joe Lop nah, you suck. that's why you have 0 national championships
+Joe Lop Best at what?
UserName0043 being mediocre
People don’t mention how these regionals were in DC. A half hour drive from George masons campus
@theprodegy472 yes, because it was deeper in the tournament and GM was an 11 seed
i'm going to gmu this upcoming semester!!!
144P? NCAA must really not want us to see UCONN getting that tip-in after the buzzer.
Wow. I watched that game wire to wire, and I don't even care about either of these teams. Amazing game, definitely top 10 of all time.
I live on Braddock road. I was home from college on spring break during the run. It was pretty crazy
I rooted for George Mason, but only because of the awesome show, "24"
best cinderella team of the decade. they should make a movie about it.
watching this game was so frustrating as a uconn fan. in OT we were playing great defense contesting every basket but George Mason could not miss any of those circus shots. ugggh
i was 12 at the time and called gmu going to the final 4! won 65 bucls
this was uconns most loaded team ever, strangely enough, andrew bynum could have been on this team but he skipped and went straight the nba. Uconn laid the biggest egg ever in their history here.
