I like that he gave you feedback and then you went ahead and fixed your paintings. This is exactly the kind of video your fans were asking for when you did your "re-inventing the channel" stream a few weeks back.
He often writes worlds that are dark and tragic, but where the stories and characters he is actually presenting to us center around themes of hope rather than that darkness
I love his stormlight series because it has such great examples of creative fantasy. It's not all grim dark or dystopian. The main setting is a bit dystopian because it takes place in a very stony environment with a bunch of racists basically at war to commit genocide, but the magic and descriptions for other locations in the world are wonderful and peak fantasy imo, and the character writing is fantastic and features some truly good hearted people trying to make the world a better place. Like there's one place that sometimes gets referred to called the Purelake, it's a region that's about 1-2 feet underwater at all times and always warm, and the people there are laid back and content. There's one city that's a main location that's built into a mountainside from the peak straight down to water for a major port. It's one of the largest trade hubs in the world and has a massive library with a kindly old king that provides free healthcare to literally everybody that comes to the city. Stormlight Archive is basically Sanderson intentionally trying to write his version of a modern epic fantasy with many locations, characters, magic, politics, etc., and I think he's doing a great job.
Everyone tends to depict Kaladin as over 40. He even looks extra old in the official RPG art. I know hes lived a rough life but my man isnt even 25 yet 😂
well in the first book, the bridge 4 is shocked on how younger he looked without the beard, so i would say that the beard puts on him quite a lot of years on him and when he shaved, back to baby face.

Elijah Wood's Bilbo is pretty iconic, but I'd say his portrayal of Tom Sawyer as well as his TV show where he dressed as a Cat are way more iconic. Oh, also him as Harry Potter. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing him.
I love seeing the process you go through in making art. In the world where so many people are just typing into an ai engine and calling themselves artists, it’s so reference to see your actual process.
I absolutely love your videos Jazza. I’ve been watching them on and off for years. I know it’s been difficult to always keep up with the UA-cam“meta,” but videos like this are why I keep coming back. I’ve never even read a book by Brandon Sanderson, but watching your love for character creation and your openness to feedback is amazing. You’re always growing as a person but still the same Jazza in the end. Also, that Bilbo comment was pure chaotic evil 😈
While I appreciate the slight tweaks to Kelsier's Arm scars, I've always pictured them to be lengthwise along his arms, as the pits of Hathsin require the prisoners to shove their arms into holes lined with sharp rocks that cut deep into the arms as they reach in to harvest the Atium.
I believe that to be more accurate. Imagine a multitude of white veins running down the arm, or a pattern as if cracking a window at a single point, almost but not quite to the point of shattering it. White, thin, long, numerous and cris-crossing.
If I remember correctly it explicitly states that the scars run the length of his forearms and hands, so your vision is correct. (If I remember correctly that is.)
I always thought of it like that too! The idea of reaching into the sharp rocky holes felt like a very similar concept to mechanics reaching into spaces and betting slices by zipties or lockwire.
Brandon Sanderson is one of my favourite authors. Not so much for the books he writes (which are indeed great) but for being a solidly decent person. And I feel like he’d think that’s the bigger compliment.
Shallan, especially at the start of the series, would've found having her safehand concealed only by a glove scandalous, too. In order to suit _Shallan_ 's (😉) sense of propriety, she should be depicted with a sleeve instead of a glove. You basically depicted her with the Vorin equivalent of lingerie, LoL. This was delightful, though. I enjoy the collaboration between an author and an artist.
The lingerie comparison is well-found, but doesn't hold up entirely, seeing as lower class women usually only wear gloves instead of a full sleeve. I guess it's more similar to a tight tank top? Fine for many people, but a bit revealing for people who are used to covering up more.
@@tulekahju Yeah, fair. Shallan's perspective is why I tried finding an IRL example that would make some people think "that's practically in my underwear", while still being something other people wouldn't bat an eye about. But I'm not sure how well I succeeded.
Agreed. I’d expect Veil to wear a glove and think nothing of it, but not Shallan. She’s more of a sleeve gal, especially at the stage of the books Jazza drew her from.
The reason why people might portray Shallan as older than 18 is because a year on Roshar is 500 days long, so an 18 year old on Roshar would be about 23ish to us.
Um acktchually 🤓, a day in Roshar is 20 hours long, so even though their years are 500 days, a Rosharan year is clores to 1.1 Earth years, meaning that an 18 year old would be closer to 20
@@Kradolpher Also Roshar is more Invested than normal, which makes people healthier and age slower, so someone who is 18 in Roshar years would be about 20 in Earth years but still look about 18 in Earth years.
how do you people even remember that? like i remember the 500 days but THE INVESTED PART? AND 20 HOURS A DAY? you guys nerds. oh and i have read most books as well (all that i could find)...
@@Ms.Bubblegum-zz1dd Mostly because of the recent math from the Sunlit Man book from the Secret Projects. Each person, even if they aren't empowered/a mage themselves, has a certain amount of BEU (breath equivalent units) Investiture in their very soul. This varies between 1 and 3 BEU per planet, and Roshar is at the latter extreme.
It was extremely validating to be like, "Jazza, you got the most cloak wrong" only to have Sanderson agree, then be thinking, "Kelsier's scars aren't that big, there's lots of little ones" only to have Sanderson agree, then be thinking, "Why are you drawing Kal so stocky?" only to have Sanderson agree, then to be like, "Sanderson is so going to call you out on her hand not being covered," only to have that happen immediately, and finally get to Steelheart and think, "I don't have any concerns about this one," only to have Sanderson once again agree. It's probably because I've read the books more recently (I started just over a year ago and have made my way through almost the entire Cosmere), but I'm glad to know that my imaginings of the characters seems to be pretty close to the authors intent.
I never thought Kal or Shallan were Asian looking. Kinda neat to hear. I definitely didn’t imagine either with that ethnic comparison. I’m Korean and thought both were white. Shallan had me imagining a fire haired Scottish woman (without accent of course). Knowing that now, I don’t think his corrections made either look Asian though. Still amazing art though!
@@aznp33nRocketSzeth is described as being a little weird looking, with big eyes. In reality, he looks european, but from the characters' point of view, that means he looks off.
@henryward5457 that makes a lot of sense actually! In a world of mostly asians, a European would definitely seem odd! I've been imagining the whole world completely off!
I've always admired Mr. Sanderson's openness and generosity. This was a ton of fun, and it was awesome to see two of my favorite creatives collaborating on this fun project.
Yes! Please get Joe Abercrombie for the first law series 😍 although I'm already getting sad knowing that Tolkien cannot do this anymore. He probably would have roasted any depiction 😅
This was AWESOME. Particularly the back and forth with the author, giving us a glimpse into how an author and an illustrator would work together, so so cool. And I absolutely agree with the fact that it's so interesting and generous of him to give such precise notes about your designs, it feels like he's taking this conversation seriously. It would be wonderful to see this kind of content again. Thank you to you both!
I really love that if it wasn't 100% what he pictured, he told you and it was cool to see you go in and change it. I like the honesty! Super cool to see!
Yet another reason to love Brandon Sanderson. He's not only the best fantasy author of this era (in my opinion), but he's such a regular guy and so willing to just hang and be a geek with us.
I only think the beard and eyes were slightly off. And, if nothing else, the eyes were meant to represent him getting his stormlight and not him as "light eyes"
This was a great deal of fun, and having the author’s feedback was a big plus. He knew each character you drew, and the change notes were quite minimal. Congratulations.🖤🇨🇦
Brandon says scar cross cross over each other, Jazza makes none of the acars touch. I love that you got the author in. First Jazza video i have watched in a while.
This is so timely for me. I just stumbled into the stormlight archives looking for some light reading.. Didn't realize what I was getting into, now I'm into the 3rd book and loving it. Can't wait till the movie industry gets ahold of it
I just clicked because I am curious and I only really know the stormlight archives because of a metal song about that series by one of my favourite bands. I was so excited to learn more about Kaladin in this video because what I know comes from the song and a reaction video by a stormlight archives fan. Kind of unreal to be watching this after having sung along to that song with the band this sunday. The song is Violent Shadows by Blind Guardian if you are curious, BG often writes songs about fantasy books.
Awesome jazza. I luv Sanderson , some of the only complete fantasy worlds I have images of in my head that no movie studio has warped with their interpretation and casting. Soo, perfect IP for this type of video (for me). I feel like once an actor portrays a character, especially if they do it well, whatever image you had in your head from reading the books just dissappears.
FAVORITE AUTHOR! Love that you did this collaboration with Brandon! One thing that I really appreciate is that he has described Shallan as looking “Japanese-Irish” as a result of her ethnic background. I appreciate that almost none of the characters are stereotypically “white” like a lot of popular fantasy series. Unique ethnic races created for this series is a compelling part of the dynamics. 😊

"Mr Sanderson" was lovely. As a fantasy author I could only wish Jazza would draw my characters lol I'd feel like I'd made it for sure. Love to see you draw Jazza and Alisha's completions of the linework and colour are always awesome! Great interpretations!
Would love this to become a series in itself! Brent Weeks' written work (The Black Prism / The Painted Man / The Way of Shadows) would look epic if brought to life visually!
Depends! Japanese eyes tilt down at outer corners, Chinese, slightly upward, South Korean, bit down but more often straight, North Korean, Cycle-Moon, down. Now these novels carry mixtures of races, so...
Rarely comment, love the Bilbo comment trap. But really, this was such a fun use of your influence and what a cool experience for fans and new fans of Sanderson’s to see him react to your hard work! ❤❤
@@wordsinahandle In one of the cultures on Roshar (world of Stormlight Archive) women hide their left hand, and it's called the safe hand. @@wordsinahandle it's the left hand. I think the right hand us called the "free hand". An uncovered left hand is considered improper in her culture in the story. When did Elijah Wood play Bilbo?
@@Stickyickyslapshot almost... there..
What a chad to simultaneously film in Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, like what other actor did anything like that?
Wood was Frodo. Not Bilbo.
I"M SHOCKED Brandon wasn't signing books whilst talking to you. haha Nicely done.
Seriously. How could he waste his time so? 😜
No kidding, right?
@@marisamonson9647 I’m mostly kidding. It’s just unusual to see. He ALWAYS signs books while doing this kind of thing.
@@Lightspren I'm joking, too. No worries.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video of him where he’s not signing books. 😂
For an author to react to a character drawing and say that it's pretty spot on must be such an accomplished feeling
Me seeing him draw shallan: THE SAFEHANDDDDDD NOOOOOO YOU DIRTY MAN
Brandon Sanderson is one of my favourite authors.
@@raizin4908 I was stating it from the perspective of _Shallan_ . So I still stand by what I said, LoL.
@@raizin4908I think that equivalent would be a lady who typically wears skirts walking about in yoga pants.
Great work! I love Mr. Sanderson's reactions so much! Must be so amazing to have him immediately recognize the character! Well done.
I was so happy you did Steelheart. People usually focus on Mistborn or Stormlight, but Steelheart and the Reckoners is such a great series too.
Honestly, I was sort of getting my hopes up that he was going to do Raoden either pre or post Shaod. But Steelheart's solid too!
As a huge Reckoners fan I was hoping beyond hope that we'd get some mention. And we did! Now I only crave more. Limelight, Firefight, Larcener...!
@emperordraygon YES. This video 10/10 sparked a deep need in me to read them again, because those are my favourite Brandon Sanderson books.
I’m so pleased that you corrected based on Brandon’s feedback, especially with the Rosharan’s facial features 🥰
Being a huge Sanderson fan, this makes me soooo happy! Incredible work!! 🩷
"bare safehand, thats lewd" Literally my first reaction to Shallan.
Lol nerds. I have read every Sanderson book, novella etc. I'm right there with you. But damn dude. We nerds
how do you people even remember that? like i remember the 500 days but THE INVESTED PART?
This is why i absolutely love Brandon Sanderson as a person. Always takes time out to interact with fans of his stories
I love this idea of adding the author to the mix, hope this series goes far and we can have more authors on the channel! Great vid man
Yes! Please get Joe Abercrombie for the first law series 😍 although I'm already getting sad knowing that Tolkien cannot do this anymore. He probably would have roasted any depiction 😅
The fact he said that TenSoon gives the best hugs makes me happy. Considering he is a dog, 100% agreed
I was thinking more along the lines of a very... consuming hug
On the human side, I'd say Adolin
Brandon being so nice and giving questions even when he clearly missed the mark with Kaladin and Shallan.
I only think the beard and eyes were slightly off. And, if nothing else, the eyes were meant to represent him getting his stormlight and not him as "light eyes"
@@LoloViking27 kaladin honestly looked way too old , he's like 20
@@dukeofkings8942 Well, considering all he's been through, I can forgive it.
@@dukeofkings8942 You tend to look older when you've had a very rough life. Stuff like that ages you prematurely.
can we have Brandon come back for a part two? this was so good. me and my family love all of his works and have not yet found one to disappoint.
I started on Mistborn. That lead to reading all of his Cosmere stories. He seems to be a very genuine good person but also an amazing author.
this just confirmed most of my headcanons and had given me strength in my ego that i’m right in all character senses
This was a great deal of fun, and having the author’s feedback was a big plus. He knew each character you drew, and the change notes were quite minimal. Congratulations.🖤🇨🇦
Albanese gummy bears are indeed the best. Just because he said that I’m gonna read Mistborn
when he said that I got immediate saliva in my mouth thinking of eating them
Do it. It’ll be one of the best things you’ll ever do. Sanderson is gonna be absolutely HUGE once he gets adapted. JRR Tolkien of our time
Lol I love that
I said it before he did, immediate response to that question.
I agree but they aren't Canadian.
Look at me, don't, no, no, look at me I need you to tell me what band made that song
@@Dr.Starbound I did, but here it is again. Blind Guardian and the song is Violent Shadows.
To be able to translate the author's discription of his characters and earn is approval is one one of the greatest honor one can get.
agreed, shallan and kaladin, and other Alethi im sure, looking more asian (at least to us) is such a refreshing change from the white default
@@gracesull78756 shallan isn't Alethi she's veden
@@Kenpoviper oh yeah you're right, my bad for not clarifying- i more meant to mention kaladin and shallan as they were in the video, but also wanted to include the alethi in general bc the og comment didn't mention it :)

Jazza playing that 'get the engagement' game by saying Elijah is Bilbo 😂 Well played sir!
You really packed in pretty much every pun you could while also not showing they're actually plot relevant, I'm impressed!
My favorite author and one of my favorite artists
Oh my lord, the dream crossover/collaboration!
I would honestly LOVED to have seen Wax and Wayne from the second era of Mistborn, (or maybe even Marasi - ooh, or MeLaan!) but I'm still happy that you did Vin and Kelsier.
0:19 oh man that censur was so funny. i thought you said like "who do you think gives the best head" but it was hugs wich is way more wholesome... sorry XD
You are such a talented artist. You actually get me excited about drawing and make me want to get back into art.
I would love to see more of this.
Having the author of the source material judge the depictions is such a fun twist on this little subgenre of videos and I hope more people start doing this sorta thing. :D
I love that every time I see Brandon, he's just so humble.
I love this!! Not only are you clearly passionate about the books, he also has such a clear vision about his characters! I really like how he expresses what changes he thinks would suit best!
This was a wonderful video. Awesome work! Also, Mr Sanderson seems like such a great guy, and he truly is a wonderful author!
I am OBSESSED with the Cosmere but, man.... More ppl should check out Sandersons other work. Its SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD. Glad you put Steelheart in there!
A tip for the Asian eyes… The top eyelids extend below the lower eyelid in the inner corner of the eyes, and the outer corners of the eyes are high.❤
Depends! Japanese eyes tilt down at outer corners, Chinese, slightly upward, South Korean, bit down but more often straight, North Korean, Cycle-Moon, down. Now these novels carry mixtures of races, so...
Yes, his animation style for Asian does not look Asian to me.
Rarely comment, love the Bilbo comment trap. But really, this was such a fun use of your influence and what a cool experience for fans and new fans of Sanderson’s to see him react to your hard work! ❤❤

She's there, she's just sticking his feet to the ground.
i was troubled by the uncovered safehand on Shallan, so scandalous
Safehand?
@@wordsinahandle In one of the cultures on Roshar (world of Stormlight Archive) women hide their left hand, and it's called the safe hand.
Noblewomen have a complete sleeve with a pouch inside for convenience.
And other women wear a glove on their left hand.

@@wordsinahandleVorin(a religion in stormlight archive) women have to cover their left hand, which is called their safe hand.
@@wordsinahandle it's the left hand. I think the right hand us called the "free hand". An uncovered left hand is considered improper in her culture in the story. For practical reasons, lower class women would wear a glove on their right hand, but upper class women like Shallan would have a longer sleeve on their left to cover their hand, I believe buttoned shut.
I'm so glad that Brandon was honest because these were honestly pretty off
I just came across this by chance but I’m subscribing just because of the author you chose and it’s actually a really good idea for people to have a representation when some of the authors have a huge scope of character cast
As a writer, if I had someone that wanted to draw characters I had created and get feedback, that would be amazing. To know someone else liked them as much as I did to then draw them would feel super special and warm the heartstrings. :D

Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author of all time, I remember I went to one of his book signings when I was a kid and got to ask him a question during his Q&A, and he is almost exactly the same in person as he is in interviews and other appearances, a very kind and driven man with a passion for his work and awe-inspiring creative talent. I was lucky enough to actually have a copy of Steelheart signed which I still have to this day, and it's a treasure I hold near and dear to my heart. Great work on the art Jazza, absolutely nailed it :D
The Amazing Brando is such a good sport about doing this kind of stuff.

Such a fun video! Love seeing the drawings come together, and hearing Brandon's thoughts about them are a delight! The details that as he says "would be hard because they don't have language to describe it" is also really neat to hear.
Thanks for crediting Alysha at the end - I honestly was thinking it looked like her painting style for final renders, and was concerned that she wasn't getting mentioned.
