I still can’t believe we didn’t get a legit backup intro where I wasn’t joking 😅😅😅. Thanks for much for having me on the show! It was a blast to discuss super powers with someone so knowledgeable about them. I shouldn’t have been surprised when he whipped out a triple tier ranking system, cuz of course he would! It is because of Wren's audible ads about the Cosmere books he was listening to at the time (This was a while ago when I was binge watching older content), that got me onto Brandon Sanderson and the Cosmere as a whole. At this point I have read all books in the Cosmere and am excited for the 5th books release in the Stormlight Archive. Thank you Wren and Brandon Sanderson!!
For so long, I’ve been commenting on almost every “Visual effects artists react” video where Wren’s sporting his Cosmere T-shirts. I’m so happy to see this!! “Wren before geekness”!!
If I shared a story idea with Brandon Sanderson and he responded with “That’s a great concept!” I wouldn’t sleep for the next 72 hours due to stressing over making it more of a concept.
On the one hand, it would obviously mean a lot to get such positive feedback from such a revered figure in the field. On the other hand, coming up with a great concept is probably by far the easiest part of developing a great story, and he could always just be responding politely/encouragingly instead of honestly.
I remember seeing wren wearing a cosmere shirt in one of their videos while reading the books. It was the first time I realized how large the Fandom is lol.
Wren you're just hitting ALL the right notes here, and this is my 3rd comment on this video. Teleportation is my #1 super power, and it is also specifically because of Jumper. From that day forward, all the little daydreams we all have of that super power we want, and how the nuances of it worked, became about that style of teleportation. This episode was a real treat, thanks guys
Androl was one of my favorite WoT characters in the later books, and now I know why. Him ripping a portal to the bottom of the ocean was one of my favorite moments.
Came here to say something similar. Androl makes so much more sense knowing He was "Brando sando's" outlet. I distinkly remember reading about him digging a trench with Portals and thinking "Damn that's a cool use of that" Though as I'm writing this, Did RJ ever write a moving portal? or did Brandon add that change?
I like the paradoxical answer to causality in Off to be the Wizard. Which goes something like: "No, you can't go back in time and fix this thing. Because here we are, and you didn't"
I LOVE how Sanderson's mind work. As soon as he said "Gambit" I thought: oh, man, I can think of so many ways to better use his powers than just small bombs. And the he goes as says the same thing 😂
Awesome video, nice to have Wren on! He's got some fun insights on the topic and bounces off of Brandon really well. As a sidenote, whichever editor decided to feature Shulk as a character for the precognition power, you have my respect and appreciation!
The flying conversation is really interesting in my opinion because watching invincible now one of my favorite things with mark in the show. I feel like it’s used in a very casual way but with giving a good sense of wonder as well and learning
I still remember Wren's Audible sponsor ad where he talked about Stormlight Archives. It's cool seeing my favorite author and the guy who introduced me to him in the same room. That's the only ad I'd happily watch again.
Well that was great. I am a big fan of both Brandon and Wren from Corridor and knowing what a big fan Wren is of Brandon and his work, it was a lot of fun to see the two of you together having the type of conversation that my friends and I often have about superpowers and pop culture references. Thank you both for taking the time to do this. It was genuinely fun!
as opposed to the usual teleportation system of converting the body to energy and beaming to another location and then re-assembling I always wanted something more like a gate i.e. folding space and stepping through to the destination (tesseract transportation) that way you could look through the gate to see what's on the other side.
Brandon’s absolutely right here when he says that the Novel version of Jumper is really good. It also has a sequel called Reflex which is even better in my opinion. I haven’t read the 3rd or 4th books in the Series, Impulse and Exo respectively, yet but it’s on my tbr.
My top 5 powers to have 5. Healing 4. Teleportation 3. Technomancy (ability to control any item running on electricity) 2. Universal communication 1. Superior edge (whatever you attempt to do you are a top 10 in the universe at it)
As a counterpoint. The manga firepunch has a very interesting take on regeneration. The magic system isn't that in depth, but basically there are people with different abilities split into classed, the main character has got regeneration powers and is considered the strongest person with that power. Basically he gets hit with a blast of fire that can't be extinguished until whatever it's burning is completely gone, and given he's got incredibly powerful healing... If anyone is interested from that description, just remember it's a very dark story, so be prepared going in.
On the topic of healing factor and regeneration a scene in the later novels of the Alex Verus series forever lives in my head. The books have magic, each mage is born into one school of magic and forever that is your power. Alex (Diviner) and his girlfriend Anne (life) had just finished their daily training. We are talk 1mile run and intense sparring without holding back. Cuts, break bones you name it. Afterwards Anne using her mastery of life magic repairs all the damage done. Not just from sparring but the micro tears from running a mile straight. I thought holy crap. You could ignore the downsides of over training this way. It made me rethink what I thought was a mundane power if not useful power into such a useful life hack.
There's a DC comic that I believe is from a run of The Outsiders, but in it the team is on a plane flying to stop some threat from happening, and one of the superheroes on that plane is Geo-Force, who can fly. One of the other heroes asks him, "Why are you in here with us, in this plane? Wouldn't it be so much more awesome to be flying by yourself?" Geo-Force responds, "Yes, it would be awesome. For about 30 minutes. After that it gets very boring." That's my take on flight as a superpower: It's awesome, especially in short bursts and for tricks, but for long flights I would just take a plane. My personal favorite superpowers are photographic reflexes and knowledge duplication. Photographic reflexes is part of the power portfolio (side note, I love that term from the Reckoners series) of Taskmaster and Echo from Marvel. It lets them copy any physical motion they see, as long as they are physically able to do it. For example, they couldn't flip a car just by watching someone do it, but one of the first things Taskmaster learns is rope tricks by watching them on TV. I just think it would be really cool to learn any magic trick, any martial art, and any sport just by watching it being done. Knowledge duplication is (was? He lost it, but I can't remember if he has it again) the ability of the mutant Prodigy. If he is in close proximity to any individual, he instantly gains their knowledge in addition to his own. If he stood in a room with Reed Richards, Charles Xavier, Tony Stark, and Doctor Strange, he would know everything they did. I just think that would be so cool, to be in a room with experts in their fields and be able to combine their knowledge in new ways. Neither of these powers are super overpowered, but I feel like they would be so much fun to have and experiment with.
chronicles is a great movie for telekenisis. in there they also learn to fly but not by moving a sheet they stand on, but just by pushing off the ground. pretty fun.
The precog could also be something like if the kid gets on the plane with their family, then he won’t have the chains in their future link to save humanity from X. Maybe they are moving and would change their mind, get a call they were waiting for, meet someone that they would not otherwise and provides new opportunities, etc.
For the longest time I thought Barrier powers are the most underrated. Was so validated to read the Reckoners and see all the ways it could be used brought forth.
I am of a similar opinion as Wren when it comes to telekinesis. Even with heavy limitations like only being able to move a certain amount of weight or something like that it has basically infinite growth potential. You can go bigger and heavier, you can go for more control, you can go for more simultaneous actions, you can go for more precision. And this boils down to being able to do nuclear fusion and fission, lifting mountains, taking things apart on the molecular level and putting them back together. The only power that rivals this in my mind are portals over teleportation and power generation as we see with Legion (both from xmen and from the short story).
The interesting plot for "swap" teleportation is having the someone trying to track the swaporter by studying what she left behind. "Hmm the species of grass is only found in such and such a place, maybe she went there...." "So you say you smelled the ocean when she vanished? "Ok based on the implosion, she might have gone to vacuum. And based on this dust, we should really take a very close look at the moon? If we can spot where she left this black sand, the next departure would have to be very close....."
I’m really surprised that nobody has mentioned Pathfinder series for the time travel power. It’s a great playground of cause and effect and all sorts of fun rule breaking
My favorite to read/watch but that I'm too scared to write yet is Luck/Fate oriented power. Not "Luck" as in, everything always goes your way, but where theres some unknown rule guiding unseen variables around you that come to a head at critical moments. Though I do love the way X-Files did it where the guy who was super lucky avoided his luck because someone nearby experiences a proportional amount of disluck. So if his luck saves his life, someone else unluckily dies. It also directly addressed the question of "who decides what's 'good' luck" at the end by having him die so the young boy he was trying to help can get his heart transplanted.
I object to the notion that Superman always gets new powers all the time. I've heard this before, but it's really really not true. The "tiny Superman" story was a one-off story after a strange incident affected him. It wasn't like Superman just developed a brand new power on his own. And I claim that Superman really only has one power, though mutated slightly. Superman has the power to be better than a normal person at anything. He's stronger than a normal person, tougher than a normal person, faster than a normal person, able to jump higher than a normal person, smarter than a normal person, and so forth. He even has better senses than a normal person, enabling him to see with X-rays (in other words, X-ray vision). And sometimes this gets weird, as he can do hypnotism better than a normal person and use ventriloquism better than a normal person. But, still, this is his *one* power. I'm going to ignore his "face molding" power that most people reading this probably didn't know he ever had. Unfortunately, this one power got mutated slightly. Sometimes he would use the "heat of his X-ray vision" to heat something. This slowly mutated into heat vision which is kind of a weird power to have. And also, his jumping power mutated into flight, which is something that a lot of people blame on the Fleischer cartoons, but really, look at the old comics. His "jumping" was drawn in ways that suggest that he was flying, even very early on; heck, he even changes direction in the middle of a "jump" quite frequently. But apart from those two mutations, Superman has one power. People should stop saying Superman has too many powers and that he gets new powers all the time because that's not true. It's just a way for people to say "I don't like Superman" without saying it.
It's hard to actually recommend reading it if you don't enjoy Grimdark, but the webseries Worm by Wildbow has some very fun power concepts/uses. For example: one of the author's rules for designing powers is that Prof. X style telepathy is not allowed; no mind palace, no direct mind reading/communication. But when you get strong enough, with fine enough control, is there _really_ a difference between Telekinesis and Telepathy?
There are ways to reconcile time travel and premonitions. (Spoiler for an anime) In Summer Time Rendering, this power is used by the protagonist to unravel a paranormal mystery on his home island. Each time he dies, time rewinds and he starts over. I really liked the limitation the author uses: each time the protagonist dies-and rewinds-the save point is a bit closer in the timeline, which creates tension.
corridor crew should do a render challenge where the participants try to make a character from cosmere and have brandon sanderson judge witch one was best.
My favourite instance of flying through telekinesis is done by the Great and Powerfull Turtle, a character in the Wild Cards series who was written by George R.R. Martin.
I don't know about anyone else but I personally prefer duplication/copy superpowers. After all no matter how singularly powerful an individual is, they are still A INDIVIDUAL. So if I'm choosing a power, it's to somehow grow or create copies of myself that share some group hivemind. So sure I don't get to shoot laser eye-beams or fly but like ants I can move or construct anything a superhero needs by shear force of numbers.
13:56 I have had this thought for a character who has much like an active imagination. He can make anything happen if he imagines it. Need to break into a vault? He will come up with a plan on how he breaks in through either super strength or with tools. As he opens his eyes, it's happened. But, two draw backs. IF he thinks he's done something for days on end with no sleep or eating, he will feel that when he opens his eyes. Along with, him being SUI. Trying to keep himself and others alive...what would that characters inner dialogue be and narration?? I have about 4 other team members he'd be paired with. Everyone has a power, but also, a powerful weakness that goes along with them
I always wanted to fly but then I thought about stuff like how high can I fly before I pass out, how fast can I go, If I hit a bird while flying what would happen, I would constantly have to change into warmer gear because flying fast will be cold especially higher up, do I experience g-force, no fly zones, and many many more. And I thought again of what power I really want and that is flying... I still want to fly.
If you guys haven't checked out paranoid mage yet it is a really cool book series (that is finished) about a portal mage with an explorative modern mindset I can really recommend it of you want to read that type of story.
Portals between civilizations (on the same planet or on different planets, either one) would be insanely dangerous when it comes to 1) diseases and 2) weather. Diseases could travel instantly. Cures could too, but they take time, and get a deadly enough disease and literally everybody is wiped out almost instantly. But then again, diseases are an insanely ignored facet of worldbuilding already. 2) Weather patterns are caused by the interactions of high and low pressure zones. Unless the atmosphere composition AND the atmospheric conditions (humidity, barometric pressure, etc.) are exactly the same, just having a portal WILL cause weather, wind and possibly thunderstorms, near the portal if it's big enough. Take that even further and think about all the weather you wouldn't cause: this land was going to have a rainstorm, but the portal relieved the air of its humidity or raised the temperature of the air, and now vast sections of the land are in drought because of atmospheric disturbances. Such causes a famine. I'm telling you, portals like the wormholes connecting the planets in Hyperion are crazy.
Him starting to talk about an epilogue of a stormlight book, me who just finished the way of kings going AAAAAAAA to avoid spoilers until I can skip it😅
With a healing factor, would all your precancerous cells be able to regenerate too? Super tumours? With regards to Regen for utilitarian reasons, I think Spider-Man's healing factor is the ultimate example. His wounds don't close before your eyes, but he can recover from a broken leg in a week.
With Teleportation, am I the only one worried about accidentally teleporting into people? It's something I always think about with Flight vs. Teleportation; yeah teleporting gets you where you want to be way faster, but at least with flight, you can see where you're going.
Invisibility might sound boring but if you combine it with a political spin, a single character could change the world. From getting a candidate elected as president, framing the opposition to turning the tide of a war.
Two people who are interested in very specific and interesting Precognition who both haven't read Worm (a story in which people who have Knowledge superpowers are almost as important as Mind control superpowers)
I feel like saying time travel is not interesting is the 4D version of saying flying isn’t interesting to write about. Time is just another direction someone can move.
See you all at Dragonsteel Nexus!

Thanks Wren for shouting ot warbreaker in an audible ad years ago you introduced me to the cosmere and i am truly thankful for tht
Awesome!!!
For so long, I’ve been commenting on almost every “Visual effects artists react” video where Wren’s sporting his Cosmere T-shirts. I’m so happy to see this!! “Wren before geekness”!!
I'd love to see a corridor video tutorial on how to use lumar spores.
What the what!!! Years of wearing cosmere shirts on corridor paid off!
Wren also appeared in Brandon's Book Club for The Sunlit Man.
I never noticed his shirts.
There are cosmere shirts? I own the Kings Wild Project Mistborn cards and no shirts. Disappointed in myself
@@Sound_TechHe's worn a bridge four shirt for one of their Seth Rogan episodes.
Wren meets with Brandon for a light, fun video about superpowers...
Goes home with a reading list of 20+ books to make time for.
Brandon and wren, in the same room, geeking out?! THIS is what the internet was made for.
Brandon with the internet's favorite good boy? Yes please!
I distinkly remember reading about him digging a trench with Portals and thinking "Damn that's a cool use of that"
Though as I'm writing this, Did RJ ever write a moving portal? or did Brandon add that change?
i dont remember if the trolloc meat pulverizer was in knife of dreams or later, but thats the biggest moving portals scene for me
also i was just thinking about androl and pevara's double bonding the other day. cant remember what i was thinking about it tho
Does this mean that there is a future collab with Corridor Crew and DragonSteel? Awesome to see both Wren and Brandon in the same room!
I like the paradoxical answer to causality in Off to be the Wizard. Which goes something like: "No, you can't go back in time and fix this thing. Because here we are, and you didn't"
Ooo, I like that
I LOVE how Sanderson's mind work. As soon as he said "Gambit" I thought: oh, man, I can think of so many ways to better use his powers than just small bombs. And the he goes as says the same thing 😂
I just love Wrens enthusiasm for everything he talks about.
Awesome video, nice to have Wren on! He's got some fun insights on the topic and bounces off of Brandon really well. As a sidenote, whichever editor decided to feature Shulk as a character for the precognition power, you have my respect and appreciation!
I wish we could get these "Five Favorites" episodes as podcasts.
The flying conversation is really interesting in my opinion because watching invincible now one of my favorite things with mark in the show. I feel like it’s used in a very casual way but with giving a good sense of wonder as well and learning
1: luck
2: flying
3: metamorphosis -> changing body parts with creature parts
4: teleportation -> shadow travel
5: healing -> self-healing
I still remember Wren's Audible sponsor ad where he talked about Stormlight Archives. It's cool seeing my favorite author and the guy who introduced me to him in the same room. That's the only ad I'd happily watch again.
This is the collab I’ve been wanting to see for years! Congrats Wren!
Now this is the crossover episode I have always been waiting for!
I had no idea two of my favorite creators are already fans of each other! Incredible!
Wren casually predicting we'd have a Secret Project 5.
47:16 It's interesting that he says that he uses mind control spearingly given that it's a key factor in at least two of his biggest novels.
Wren got me into Stormlight back in 2017/18 - what a legend! Loved Brando Sando ever since
Same! He did a audible sponsor bit at the end of a corridor vid, then when I was looking for a long book to use my single credit on I picked it up.
I love that Wren basically pitched Dr. Who.
They have great chemistry together.
I remember one day wren suggested listning to Stormlight Audiobook on a Audible sponsorship. And now we are here.
This is a crossover I've been wanting in the corner of my mind for a while now!!!
Wren?!?! This is probably the second best collab you have done. Will Friedle is still number one
The stopping the plane thing, is basically the plot of the 1st final destination movie
as opposed to the usual teleportation system of converting the body to energy and beaming to another location and then re-assembling I always wanted something more like a gate i.e. folding space and stepping through to the destination (tesseract transportation) that way you could look through the gate to see what's on the other side.
Wow im so hyped, just love this collab
That precognition Wren is talking about is very similar to Sixth of Dusk's aviar's ability!
Androl being the #1 reference is giving me life out here.
I love Brandon’s #1. Androl is my favorite side character in WOT.
Brandon’s absolutely right here when he says that the Novel version of Jumper is really good. It also has a sequel called Reflex which is even better in my opinion. I haven’t read the 3rd or 4th books in the Series, Impulse and Exo respectively, yet but it’s on my tbr.
My top 5 powers to have
5. Healing
4. Teleportation
3. Technomancy (ability to control any item running on electricity)
2. Universal communication

Vernor Vinge did a good job with teleportation in The Witling. Re: momentum/orientation/etc.

39:40 this super telekinetic is Globe from Drew Hayes criminally under read series Super Powereds
I am of a similar opinion as Wren when it comes to telekinesis. my favorite fact about the invention of the wheel was that wheels were used for pottery well before they were used for any kind of transportation
Legend
I’m really surprised that nobody has mentioned Pathfinder series for the time travel power. It’s a great playground of cause and effect and all sorts of fun rule breaking
So when is Corridor making a Mistborn full-length feature film? XD
My favorite to read/watch but that I'm too scared to write yet is Luck/Fate oriented power. Not "Luck" as in, everything always goes your way, but where theres some unknown rule guiding unseen variables around you that come to a head at critical moments. OMG I thought they were working secretly for the past year to make the first cosmere movie...
A crossover I didn't expect to see
Seeing infinity blade in any media not dedicated to it shocked me, but then I remembered B$ wrote those books
Brando Sando sounds like a cool Star Wars character.
The Jumper books are great, I hope you picked them up Wren
Casandra - I believe, is the oldest story of precognition, and not being able to alter it.
I object to the notion that Superman always gets new powers all the time. I've heard this before, but it's really really not true. The "tiny Superman" story was a one-off story after a strange incident affected him. It wasn't like Superman just developed a brand new power on his own.

I dont know who im more jealous of.. Wren got to meet Brando and a Brando got to meet Wren! Two of the most pure and enthusiastic people.

Gambit is actually a kinetic energy without the inhibitors he can stop even movement at a large scale.
wren predicting SP5 lol
There are ways to reconcile time travel and premonitions. (Spoiler for an anime) In Summer Time Rendering, this power is used by the protagonist to unravel a paranormal mystery on his home island. Each time he dies, time rewinds and he starts over. I really liked the limitation the author uses: each time the protagonist dies-and rewinds-the save point is a bit closer in the timeline, which creates tension.
Wren got me addicted to Onewheel and Brandon Sanderson
o wow, I love that he knows about the Wheel of Time.
The collab I didn’t know I needed
Brennan Sanderson’s UA-cam marketing team is absolutely crushing it 😅
corridor crew should do a render challenge where the participants try to make a character from cosmere and have brandon sanderson judge witch one was best.
Magneto on Scadrial just being a complete menace.
My favourite instance of flying through telekinesis is done by the Great and Powerfull Turtle, a character in the Wild Cards series who was written by George R.R. Martin.
Even some bad superpowers are better than nothing when you're in control
Say what you will about X-Men Origins, but that had the most interesting applications of Gambit's power I've seen in motion picture.
I think the best superpower short film is from the music video to Nickelback's Savin Me.
please tell me this means more brando sando x corridor collabs, would be so hype for corridor to make a proof of concept live action cosmere video!
Dubstep guns was ny first Corridor video😂
WREN!? Didn’t know he was a Sanderson fan and visa versa.
In case the team didn't already know, the Brandon Cam focus was sharp on his knee & shin instead of his face
"I do not need to blow things up very often" implies he does, in fact, need to blow things up sometimes
Fated by Benedict Jacka is a really interesting story about a diviner. Someone who can see the future.
I'm glad that some other people think immortality would actually be fine.
If you guys haven't checked out paranoid mage yet it is a really cool book series (that is finished) about a portal mage with an explorative modern mindset I can really recommend it of you want to read that type of story.
Flying as part of Telekinesis is emphatically NOT cheating, Brandon! Telekinesis give you fission, fusion, atomic control, pyrokinesis, etc...
Him starting to talk about an epilogue of a stormlight book, me who just finished the way of kings going AAAAAAAA to avoid spoilers until I can skip it😅
Me: "Is it Jumper?"
Brandon: "Is it Jumper?"
Wren: "It's Jumper"
I also think that's an underrated movie that I wish had done better
Considering how many X-men were mentioned here, I hope everyone watched the excellence that is X-Men 97'
I think my favorite superpower of all time is Coil’s power from Worm.
With a healing factor, would all your precancerous cells be able to regenerate too? Super tumours?
With regards to Regen for utilitarian reasons, I think Spider-Man's healing factor is the ultimate example. His wounds don't close before your eyes, but he can recover from a broken leg in a week.
Much better over Deadpool's who can regenerate from death, but is riddled with full-body cancer
Now i want Brandon to work on the X-Men
With Teleportation, am I the only one worried about accidentally teleporting into people?
