    glad I found this. I lost fifty pounds last year just on straight treadmill work, and changing the way I eat. I'll start giving the elliptical a try to see if I can lose 30 more pounds this year. Before I got sick, I just used to live in the weight room pushing and pulling.

    Very well explained. Thank you. However I don't think I can go up to a resistance of more than 5 now. Sob. I resumed my work out two months back after break of 5 years. I am 5'8" and 193 lbs. I haven't been able to burn more than 200 cal in 30 minutes. So you are right. I am getting cozy on my trainer and not really challenging myself. I can't do the treadmill as it makes me dizzy on stopping it. Hope to build up gradually.

    I am definitely one of those people who like to have that pace to match when doing cardio so I often go to the treadmill, but the eliptical feels so much better on my joints! This definitely is a routine that will keep things interesting and is a great guideline, will definitely have to give it a go! Thanks for sharing :)

      LifeWithCass yes! It's very challenging mentally to really push yourself on the elliptical. If I don't go into it with a specific plan, I won't really push! Hope you enjoy! :)

    Hi Alyssia, there's no crossramp settings on the elipticals at my gym. There's just resistant, and they even don't show spm or rpm but speed in km/h. Do you have any tips for that kind of machines?

    • @justjuanamany
      @justjuanamany 6 років тому

      You can try to count how many times your pedal goes around in a minute to get a 'feel' for the strides per minute (or how many times in 6 seconds and times by ten). Otherwise, just as good, use your own 'walking' to 'jogging' to 'sprint' speeds, that will do the same thing. Most important is to learn your own heart rate at rest through to max. That way you can keep it at the correct rate for your chosen goal.

    Started with the Elliptical, I always switch direction but not the inclined, will try today thanks, but now I noticed and fell in love with The Lateral machine still trying to figure it out, so if your gym have that machine could ya please do a video, so love your channel, your treadmill is my favorite routine to do now especially when I get bored with running indoors..lol. Love this tutorial! I've always been more of a threadmill person but had been wanting to switch things up a bit with something low impact but still get a good workout. Strangely enough, my gym has over a dozen elliptical of various models but only 3 of them are the ones with the ramp and settings described here.

    Ironically I planned to use the elliptical tomorrow at the gym, thanks for the upload 8) I usually do interval training with it but I don't plan them so well, I'll give this a try! For a suggestion, I'd love to see any tips/tutorials/advice on some ways to tone/gain some lean muscle. As a chronic runner, strength training is something I need more help to understand and to learn to enjoy. I hear a lot of conflicting opinions (for females especially) when it comes to how heavy to lift vs. how many reps to do, I'm curious about your opinion on it! I'm in need of some healthy muscle mass, but unsure how to go about it? And thanks again for sharing this vid!

    Thank you for the wonderful video! I am new to ellipticals and I just got a sole e95. Wondering whether the crossramp and resistance levels are universal across machines? If not, Is there a good way to find the according to levels with my machine?

  • @douglasvaldez1681
    @douglasvaldez1681 8 років тому +2

    What do you think about the "weightloss" button on the machines? I usually put in my weight, set the time, level and follow the program on the machine.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  8 років тому +1

      I don't usually use the pre-programmed options because I like to anticipate what is coming, but it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them. I wouldn't get caught up in them being called "weightloss" or "fat loss" because those results are definitely dependent on lifestyle as a whole and primarily diet over exercise, but they can be fine for workouts I'm sure :)

    Hey, great video! :) Can you give me an idea of how much I should reduce the SPM ranges by for a complete beginner? The elliptical is the one thing in the gym that doesn't scare me, and I really want to start using it, but I just never know how much I should or shouldn't be pushing myself. I'm young but I have the physical fitness of a 70 year old! Thank you!

    Good workout, looks very hard, I hope to be able to complete it tomorro! I just have a few questions. Is the resistance a universal number (I mean is the 10 in the machine in my gym the same in any elliptical machine?) And how do you measure resistance? With which units? Thank you!!

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  9 років тому

      Sara Cabitza Give it a try! Most elliptical machines are 1-10 on resistance :) If for some reason your elliptical is not on a scale of 1-10, aim to match as if it were 1-10 (i.e., if it's 1-20, aim for 16 instead of 8, etc.) :) Enjoy!

      Thank you so much for your answer. I also have another question: I would like to buy an activity tracker, but with the huge choice out there I don't know what to buy! Polar, Jawbone, Fitbit... Which one would you suggest? I feel the need of one because I have recently changed life style due to a new job and I am seeing my bum and thighs getting uncomfortably bigger for my standards, I am experiencing very low energy levels, I don't sleep enough and I have huge cravings, all things I haven't experienced for many years! Thank you for your help, you are very inspiring!! I now go to the gym for one of your workouts! ;-)

    I was really excited to try this, but my gym, which has a lot of equipment (probably 5 different kinds of ellipticals), didn't have a machine with ramp settings or SPM. I like that workout PDF file for the elliptical has many benefits, Great job creating that, I'm disappointed since I just got a gym membership considering I was only running and jogging outdoors I got on the elliptical to attempt to follow the instruction on that PDF file one elliptical was called Precor it had the SPM but it didn't have the swinging arms to hold onto, then they had a elliptical machine called matrix where it gave RPM Only an settings labeled L1 L2 for elevation.. Just wish The other machine has swinging arm grrrr. But a very nice detailed PDF file

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  8 років тому

      It depends on the size of the person and intensity of the workout, but we can "guesstimate" around 10 calories per minute for MOST cardio routines- so around 300 calories per 30 minutes. I'd say a little less than that for the elliptical and probably a little more for the stairmaster :)

    why are the elliptical without the arm things a waste of time?
    I feel like I get a better leg work out if I dont use the arm things.

    • @MindOverMunch
      @MindOverMunch  9 років тому

      +blondiemakeup27 They aren't necessarily a waste of time, it depends on the person. You can get your heart rate going way more if you're moving your arms, and therefore will burn more calories. A lot of people tend to rest their upper body completely and don't get as efficient of a workout as they could otherwise. If you feel more confident without the arms, then do what works for you for sure! :)

      my elliptical machine is a bit old and its manual.
      it shows calories, speed, time and covered distance... so i'm finding it hard to match up.

    Does the elliptical add bulk?

      exercise won't "add bulk" unless your diet is accounting for it and intending to. It is actually quite difficult to bulk muscle.

    Mam if I do 30min in mrng will my inner thighs get thin r not?

      @MindOverMunch  6 років тому

      body composition and weight are really going to depend on so many factors, but I really believe diet is the most important one. Exercise is good for general health, but won't make much difference if diet isn't the number 1 factor.

    Please put up some weight training vids xD Shed some light on that myth that women become huge like men when they lift heavy. Only way of through hormonal &/or steroidal implementation. There is a difference btwn a cardio booty & a strong booty! x)~

      Darkchylde50 absolutely! I really do want to do this as weight lifting is a huge passion of mine :) Thanks for the suggestion!

    Remove the condescending tone and this could be a helpful video.

      it isn't intended to be condescending at all-functional, with disclaimers so no one injures themselves.
