    I knew nothing about rivets, saw the gun, and now installation. Ready to install my Hull ID # Tag to my Alumaweld. Thanks Dan...

    Wow you make riveting look so easy. I will certainly give riveting a try next time I'm building framework on my john boat. Great work!

    Getting ready to frame my jon boat, what size holes you drilling and the size of the rivet? What size aluminum and thickness are the frame pieces? and how strong is it? Did you use a wood deck?

    the ones i use are called pop rivets i think... i wouldn't recommend using them below the water line although they probably are water tight but i dont know for sure. if you need rivets for that i would suggest the rivets that you hammer in instead of the kind i used. check out Daniel Rice's jon boat vid...he uses that kind of rivet and shows how to finish them off so they aren't sticking out. if you need more help let me know. hope that helps!

    Im sure that is a possibility although they seem to be holding up well

    Great Video My Brotha..Where did you get the Aluminum Channel angle from? What's the Diameter of It? How much Did It Cost?

    • @dangerkin1
      @dangerkin1  3 роки тому

      Thanks. I got the channel from Lowe’s along with all the other stuff pretty much. I think it was 1/8 in thick but not sure. Cost was reasonable like $12-15 for like a 4 ft long price or something. Can’t remember all the specs it was awhile ago when I built this boat.

  • @dangerkin1
    @dangerkin1  11 років тому

    The rivets are aluminum 3/16 inch and they're in size long and medium lengths. The aluminum is just 1/8 inch angle beams that you can get at lowes and home depot etc...

    Hey I have been watching all your videos because I'm about to do something similar to my John boat and had a few questions how to you rivet through the boat and have it not leak? And also does the rivet stick out the sides and

    Nice job...I ordered 1/8 inch aluminum sheets and aluminum angle I am extending the deck in my tracker grizzly and adding storage..never used a rivet gun..what size rivets and drill bit will I need to compete the task?

      3/16 inch and medium or long rivets are what I used. And the bit will need to be 3/16 as well. Hope that helps

    They make ALL kinds of rivets! I saw a comment below saying not to use under water line... Just wanted to say that they make waterproof rivets

    • @dangerkin1
      @dangerkin1  9 років тому

      Yeah I realize they make different kinds of rivets as i mentioned to that person. I just don't think these particular kind of rivets that I used (pop rivets) are suitable for using below the waterline.

    Carpenter here, not a clue about aluminium or working with metal. Want to do the same and have a few questions about the aluminium boxing/L sections. What are the dimensions of the aluminium you are using for the boxing as I have no idea what size is needed to be strong enough?

    • @dangerkin1
      @dangerkin1  10 років тому

      Im pretty sure its 1/16 inch thick by 1.5 inches wide. Its very thin and light and alone it would be too weak but all connected together its is actually very strong. If you went with 1/8 in that would also be fairly light and very strong. It really doesnt have to be like concrete tho to be honest. Just brace any areas that will have stress like seat mounts and you will be fine.

      What do you mean? Is it stuck or just loose in there and wont come out? I usually could just turn it over and they would fall out.

      Dan Gerkin I'm an aircraft mechanic and I use cherry max / pop rivets / blind rivets, on a daily basis. The reason the stem didn't break is due to two things.
      1, the stem isn't engaged all the way. The older the set of pullers (the gun) gets, the more worn the jaw halves inside get. They are cheap, and easy to replace, so definitely check them about twice a year, as they do where down. When they wear, they slide on the stem and thats what your problem was, because...
      2, the grip length of your rivet is too long for your application. You want a shank that is 1 1/2 D (diamerter) longer than the total grip length.
      Cherry max makes a depth checker that allows you to check your length, and then select the appropriate length rivet from there. After that, just clap your pieces together to ensure there isn't any open space between the pieces, and then pull nice and evenly. You should never have to twist off a cherry max rivet like you did, or the locking collar won't engage, and the rivet anvil in the back of the shank will fall out, and then your hollow rivet will shear.
      You may also be interested to know that for that particular application, solid rivets would have been just as easy, and lasted about 5 times longer. Rivet squeezes can be rented with the appropriate dies by the day from industrial tool rental shops. =) Or a decent one from www.yardstore.com can be had for about 265$.
      Hope that helps your future projects!

      @dangerkin1  10 років тому

      William G thanks for the response. I guess I should have used solid rivets. I will do that next time.
      So what about s buchanan problem? With him it sounded like the rivet broke but then got stuck in the gun. Ever had that happen?
