Only reason you got that thick black metal sound is the plug ins,on a regular practice or amp in general you'll never get that sound with the stock single coils.Possible if you put a humbucker in the bridge.

I got a squire with humbucker this years corona lockdown to start to learn all the basics changing strings, tuning, intonation and string height. When i know how to take care of a guitar, is when ill get a better guitar or just upgrade the squire
Depends on how much money are you willing to pay, to upgrade your guitar. Or how much money do want to spend on a better guitar. Also, are you happy with your guitar and what bothers you about it? That's some factors that could influence your choise

Any of the "issues" like getting out of tune can be fixed with a basic setup (which you're supposed to do out of the box) and using thicker guage because duh it's drop B

Standing or sitting playing, pick thickness, speaker size, cabinet type, number of speakers, the pedal order, cable type, cable length, string core, string Guage, how you attack the strings, angle of the pick, how you hold the neck, how you fret, action height, intonation, nut type, how close the pickups are to the strings, how much pressure you put when fretting, type of pickups, how the pickups are wired, and so on and so forth. My guitar in total is probably $300 give or take. The rig I have for band setting is $400 give or take. So I mean, if you need to buy expensive shit. It has more to do with your ego and inability to want to work with what you have rather than wanting to actually learn how to be good/decent. One person can take a $1,000+ guitar and run through a $2,000+ rig and sound like absolutely horse shit. Then someone else can use the same thing without changing settings and make it sound amazing. Ted Nugent was backstage at a Halen concert and asked Eddie to try out his rig. Know what it sounded like? You guessed correctly. It sounded like Ted Nugent because it's the player. Not the gear.
if you are okay with the buzz when not playing or when letting strings ringing, then it's fine. Copper shielding it won't fix 100% but it's already a noticeable difference
You can definitely play metal with single coils or p90s in some cases, it just sounds...weird? I have a Les Paul with p90s. I can play metal on it in the middle pickup position which gives it humbucking properties (ie no noise). It sounds, uh, twangy? Not good for fat metalcore tones but great otherwise

The majority of the sound comes from your amp/multi-effects processor, so if you have a good audio interface, a good amp sim or a good pedalboard, you'll have a good sound, not the same sound of Nik's guitars, but still good :)
@Multorum Unum You can djent on a tele easily, with single coils too. Six string guitars won't cut it beacuse they simply aren't made for tunings like drop A and lower.
With plug-ins you don’t even need a real amp anymore. You can get tons of great ones for free. Of course, a real amp may sound better, but unless you’re a crazy gear head you probably won’t tell the difference.
You can get some pretty good used amp heads. Like an Randall rg15013, every bugera amp or an marshall valvestate 8100 for example. Those small practice amps like the nux mighty lite or the roland micro cube are good too. But of course, i don't know what is a good amp in your head, is it amp head with cabinet? Is it an combo amp or a small practice amp? But yeah, plug-ins seem pretty cool too. Oh and the small joyo amps are cool too, from what i've heard
