Episode Notes:
1. You may notice I mention the Sega Master System Mini a few times (it doesn't exist). This was because I did a number of videos covering what that product may look like.
2. Much of this was captured from real hardware. The rest is from the Mega SG.
3. These opinions span nearly the entire run of my channel and come from a dozen different videos.
4. I tried to leave out games I have a very poor opinion of. That's why there is no SMS Altered Beast for example.
Seeing the Master System get some love always makes my day. It was my first console, and I have fond memories of playing all those cool games. I regret selling it long ago so I could afford a megadrive. Luckily, I got my hands on a converter, and I can play these classics on my old megadrive.
I'd absolutely love to get a master system mini. I really wish the mini console fad wouldn't have burnt out.
A master system mini would be sweet, I'd rather see a Saturn mini though.
Just get a master system.there cheap and easy to mod
Or the mega sg is amazing playing master system game. I have both and it made my minor collection of the master system grow quickly
@@willeysingleton3057 nice bro, that's sweet. Those Analogue clones do look amazing, I never really got into them but I'd love to own an Analouge Pocket at some point. I wasn't in to collecting physical games, I went all digital because I was primarily a PC gamer. I have all the current gen consoles +pc now. I'm really starting to have serious doubts and regrets about stopping buying physical games with all the Shady stuff being pulled by Sony and Nintendo with purchased games and movies. The whole idea of owning something is that you get to keep it and it's illegal to have it taken away from you lol
It burnt out, because people realized they were just emulator boxes.
The timing of this video could not have been better. I am in the middle of converting my home office into an 80s retro room and I'm going to purchase both the Sega Master System 2 and Nintendo NES consoles. I want to start collecting the physical games. I have every single Master System game for emulation but nothing beats the real thing. Amazing video. I really enjoyed this 👏🏻

As a Brazilian, i love Sega and the Madter System. Truly classic here in my land
How did the Mega-Drive perform in Brazil? Did Tec Toy handle distribute of that too?
I absolutely love the master system, I love it so much I bought the console again and started to collect for it again, great video.
I'm currently working on my Sega Master System collection. This video helps me a lot. Thank you.
Me too, got only 29 to go, I started 5 years ago and regret not picking up the heavy hitters first. I didn’t want to pay $200 for some of the games and now they’ve like $500 😮

Awesome video!! The Master System was my first system into the gaming world. Sega all the way!! I still have all my Sega Master System newsletter magazines. ❤
Hello, I'm from France, I've been following you for years now. I feel like I've always known your channel and grown old with it. Rebooting old videos brings back lots of good memories and it's always cool to take refuge there to remember a nicer time. Thank you for what you do and keep it up for a long time
You truly are the Sega Lord. This is a masterpiece of a video. Dynamite compilation of a much loved SMS.
Nice vid, good to see Asterix on here, one of my favourites as a kid
I grew up with Sega master System 😀 So I collect this .. Thank you very much for what you post here, Greetings Erling from Norway 🇧🇻
Oh this is gold. As a Brazilian fan of yours I can say you hit hard on the nostalgia. Thanks for the content!
What's crazy is I didn't know the Master System existed until I visited this channel a few months ago. I always thought "Master System" was just the name for the Japanese Sega Genesis. I do remember seeing the grid style boxes at ToysRUs, but always thought they were for an older system like the Atari.
same lmao
@@omegamanGXE i'm brazilian, and i meet this before NES, the effect here was reverse, and i just realized that NES exist when SNES became massive in Brazil. We had some pirates NES too here with another names, but as a kid i never thought these were NES, i didn't had the concept of original or pirate. I just played the classics from Nintendo years later, my "graduation" on vg was massive SEGA first. After this i played everything else. But Master was the big deal in 80s/early 90s here. I believe that in a lot of Europe too, i heard that Master was super popular there too.
I still remember going to my friends and watching him play Sonic 2 on Master System before we had Mega Drives. What a time to be a 7 year old 😅
Great video for a great system. Master System! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Master System was my first console. It was absolutely brilliant. Best 8 bit version of Double Dragon, great ports of Vigilante and Afterburner. Choplifter, Captain Silver, Enduro-Racer, Outrun, Hang-On and Ganster Town were big favourites in my home.
It wasn't until I started emulating ten or so years ago that I realised the sound was kinda torture compared to the NES. It had an amazing colour pallete and fantastic graphics overall. Have to agree with Sega Lord X, it is so unfairly underrated.
I agree with the sound tracks. They were horrible. Felt like made gameplay worse and wasn’t as connected with characters they seemed foreign.
45:50 What I like about Hang On is how smooth the sprites move. I wish the Genesis version was the same.
Kung Fu Kid was the first game i got for my master system after Alex Kid In Miracle World that was build in the Sega Master System 2.
An excellent list. Several of my favorites here. In defense of Kenseiden, the repetitive segments you brought up are training stages designed to grant powerful awards based on flawless play. I'm not trying to invalidate your criticism, but it is important to frame these training rounds in the right context.
Thanks for another amazing video!!
Btw, "Hang On" was also released on a multi-cart with "Safari Hunt" as well as the one you mentioned. Also worth mentioning that "Satellite 7" have 2player co-op, and that raise the gaming experience quite a bit in my opinion.
i had the Hang-on/Safari Hunt duo myself.
Thank you SLX for creating a dedicated video for SMS. It was my first machine and holds so many great memories. The dedication to make this video. Mych Appreciated
They were way more common in Australia than the NES in my memory at least. Particularly after the Master System 2 came out
I remember looking at the NES in the day but ended up with the Master System II, was cheaper 😊
That is also how I ended up with the Master System 2
the nostalgia inception of being nostalgic for sega lord x videos about sega master system games i am nostalgic for.
14:25 Wonder Boy and New Zealand Story are two games that are very close to the arcade. Very impressive ports.
Seeing the enemies fly apart in chunks in Black Belt totally explains its Hakuto No Ken roots. Punching people into chunks is SO Kenshiro.
And the sound the chunks make is so satisfying
yup, i looked at Black Belt in my deep dive of the Console's library and i was like "Reskinned Fist of the North Star".
The funny thing is that when I told people about the Hakuto No ken connection, they would just say, "NO WAY, THEY ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAMES"
LOL Nope... it's essentially what we would call a ROM hack today. They needed to localize it for western consumption.
@@popixel yup, a Graphics Hack to be precise.
Here in Australia my first console was Atari 2600 and then the Sega Master System was second back then as a kid still love it now and always
My first console was the Hanimex HMG3650 I think it was called here in Aus, in the USA I think it went by the name of Emerson Arcadia. One of my school mates had the Atari 2600,man I was jealous lol
Had a Mattel Aquarious PC system after that sold exclusively by Dick Smith back in the day.
But after that I got my second actual console, the Master System II with that Alex Kid in Miracle World built in.
I have a warm place in my heart for the Master System! I always will. Funnily enough I traded my NES for my Master System at a pawn shop initially. At first I had regret until I found a Kay-Bee toys that had tons of games on sale. One of which was Phantasy Star. Yup, our crew were legendary gamers. I still love the hobby all these years later!
Had so many flashbacks during watching. Thank you :)
This ones for you Paul, getting me hardcore into Master in the mid 80s starting with Kenseiden.
Thanks for posting this! The Master System's got so many gems.
I still love the master system to this day. Thank you for this great video 👌💯
fantastic compilation SegaLordX. it brought good memories back and games I didnt even know about it and I will surely try.
NES was bigger where it went first… in places like Australia, Europe and Brazil, where they came about the same time, the SMS was equal or bigger than the NES.
Master System was my first console. I am from Canada.
Mine too got it Christmas 87’ I’m in Canada too.
Everyone had NES but I was in love with this system and had to have it.
@@MPascolin My dad liked the games and graphics more so we got it instead. The other reason was that a lot of rental places around here started selling their Master System games once it was discontinued so my dad got lucky and was able to buy a bunch of games for cheap. We still have it and all the games haha.
SEGA Master System was my first as well. hello from Iowa! i was turning 5 and my Uncle had the NES, i didnt want to have the same console as he did, so when i saw the commercial for the Master System on TV, it was like a sign from god. i had a total of 15 games for it before i had to let it go, as my old man didnt want a bunch of consoles piling up in the house.
SEEEGAAAAAAH🎶✨
MASTER SYSTEM
I would love for Sega to release a Master System collection for modern consoles. As this video proves there are plenty of great games to choose from.
Hey SLX, I think you put out amazing content, but there's one video that I'm waiting for from you that I KNOW only you can do well. You should make a top 25 Sega games of ALL time! No matter what console they're on. Hell, you can even include arcade games. I was gonna suggest a top ten list, but that would be damn near impossible LOL. 25 may even be tough. Oh well, it's just a suggestion. If you have already made a video like that, then disregard what I wrote, but I'm pretty sure I've seen all of yours. Also, do you still offer merchandise? I need more T-shirts !! Stay blessed, Sir!
I've always been a Nintendo kid, but boy the Sega Master System is really impressive
Nice trip down memory lane. Thanks! Also a reminder that i need to track a few of these down still
Some of my favourites are Alien3, Phantasy Star, California Games II and Captain Silver. In my opinion the SMS version of Captain Silver is tons better than the arcade version, something you don't see very often in an arcade port at the time. The YM2413 chip did the console a lot of justice. If only we can have that FM music applied to every game. I'm keen to know what the sound chiptunes for the Illusion trilogy would sound like with this hardware upgrade.
I have literally zero recollection of the Master System, and that’s a shame. Thanks for the video on this underrated console
that is a shame indeed.
It's awesome you used the FM audio versions!
I have a smaller master system collection and it was only a system i played at friends until about 10 years ago i got one garage sale hunting. Some titles hold up, others don't. It is nice to have. I especially enjoy wonder boy, and how much better it was than adventure island on NES
I'd love an sms mini just to display how great the console is to the modern audience.
Nice one SLX... Great timing too for self therapy for today.
Best wishes.
If retro games are help with your depression you damn well keep playing people!
(Bit of zero wing engrish there lol...)
Thanks for the comment and I hope your day goes well.
Great vid! Cant wait for the other 200
When I was a kid there was 2 opportunities to get a Master System but my Nintendo fanboy ways didn't do it. I picked one up after highschool and I really wish I experienced the games back when they were new. I really like the SMS
"Hang On was later available on a combo cart with Astro Warrior"
interesting. i own a combo cart of Hang On and Safari Hunt. i wonder if Hang On had a few different combo carts?
24:24 Aerial assault parallax damn
Despite its small library of games, the Master System is my favourite console. My favourite Sonic too.
My first ever Sega Console I was addicted to Wonderboy 3 the dragons trap and Sonic 1.
Dragons trap was my favorite Master System game. I finished it over 30 times. The first true metroidvania imo.
There's just something about 8 bit games that keep me coming back. They all have so much style and creativity. At least now we can use cheats to overcome the lack of modern QoL features.
Woooop heck yes. My personal favourite is the Japanese version of THE NINJA it had extra levels
Three easy recomendations that you missed are Buggy Run (racing), Masters of Combat (1 on 1 fighting) and Put & Putter (mini golf). All great games that I never saw anyone mentioning.
I hope they include the Mark III version of Enduro Racer on the Master System mini. It's one of the best pick-up-n-play games on the console, imo. The fibr additional levels would be great.
Thank you for making this list, I know what to add to my retro pie setup
I have my original Master System my parents got me Christmas 86 and it still works with the 3d glasses too
It will always have a semi love thanks to the Regular Show community at least! I grew up with this as we didn't really have an NES or any Nintendo product until way later on and my mom had this weird thing about Nintendo so we were always a Sega household
The Master System while we only had about 30 games was very fun to play and when the Genesis finally came to our house we were very ready to embrace that as part of a very nice childhood
Regular Show quickly became one of my fave animated shows after showcasing SEGA Master System, rather than a Nintendo console which would have been a safer reference. but no, the creators were different and they stood proud on the SMS.
The heck did Nintendo do to you're mom😂 The hell are you just gonna gloss over that without explaining it, did a Nintendo employee plow into the side of you're house, lol.
I’m 40. When I retire. I’ll have about 2 million. I’m playing all these games and many others for 5 years uninterrupted.
This was the first console i ever had. My brother brought it from London to use in ireland and we had never even heard of home game consoles. Hang on and Duck Hunt were the pre installed games.
The console that started it all for me
Great Stuff, as always!
Very popular here in Brazil. I have 2 models, Master System 1 and Master System 3.
I discovered the master system by being curious about the video game console in Regular Show.
The Ninja is my fond and enduring memory of the SMS. Rastan as well.
Wonderboy in Monsterland was my number one favorite sega master system game!
There are some great games on the Master System.
Wow! Great video SLX! Glad to see the 8-bit Sega Master System get some more love and attention.
I love Bomber Raid and glad that got a mention, it plays so much like a Toaplan shooter on the Mega Drive and the SMS version of Double Dragon is the best port of the game in my opinion. Respect your opinion but have to disagree with you on what the best era of Master System was, definitely would have to be 1989 to 1994. The early stuff from 1985 to 1991 I always found far too difficult where after a few tries I got sick of repeating the same thing over and over.
My only minor gripe with the video is that you left out a lot of better, later titles and focused a little too much on the early hard repetitive stuff. You left out (Laser Ghost, Alien Storm, Shadow Dancer, Tom & Jerry, Lemmings, Back To The Future III, Sega Chess, T2 The Arcade Game, Global Gladiators, Cool Spot, Rambo III, Outrun Europa, The Jungle Book, Alex Kidd The Lost Stars, Dynamite Dux, Dynamite Duke, Tecmo World Cup 93, Tennis Ace,). Still a great and enjoyable video and thank you for making it. ❤
My childhood and still joint favourite with ps1.
That damn Choplifter theme music gives me PTSD 🤣🤣
19:33 So Spellcaster is in the same spirit as Super Mario Bros 2. A re-skin of another game. And I always felt it look very similar to Mystic Defender and thought it was the same game.
MS was my first console. The first of so many. I had wonderfull memories of that time. In France and Europe, Sega had a solid run with it challenging the NES. it looks like you forgot somes good games that we had in the late days such as populous, pacmania, Danan and submarine attack. I am sure there are many others. YOu purposely forgot a couple of catastrophic alex kidd episodes. thanks
Thanks!
Thank you for the support. Much appreciated.
@@SegaLordX I am Master System kid all the way. I still remember choosing it over the NES Christmas 1986. I also relate to you personally in my life story. Thanks for everything you do.

A potential Sega Master System Mini needs those game go be included!
I gave up waiting for SEGA. I just bought an original one. It's on its way for an RGB/FM mod.
I havent watched the whole video but im sure im going to love it
Lol... Penguin Land has 50 levels of puzzle glory-- my favorite Master System puzzle title.
Love your videos man. Maybe 1 day when I recover and I'm back up north We can share a beer.
SMS was my console of choice as a kid. My mom met the owner of the local distribution company and secured a bunch of Master System games for me and my brother. I even had the 3D glasses, which effectively created depth and made the games more engaging. Wonder Boy series is my favorite.
Original SEGA developer never fail on its BGM
These videos are going to be really helpful building a Sega Saturn collection in the future. Now only to decide which random promotional version of the Saturn I want lol.
How could you not like Enduro Racer. Are you rembering to tap down on the D-pad as soon as you touch a ramp? It makes all the difference.
wow that barfalicious outrun cover art cant be real
Still loving it in Brazil. Cheers!
I grew up with an Nes Clone called Phantom System, but I had prior contact to the Sms at a cousins place. Being from Brazil, it was really easy to spot it at rental places. I know the Nes had some solid games, but I was kinda jealous of the Sms bc of its amazing colors.
I really like the Disney's games on the Sms...
I was a sega master system kid ❤
As a childbaby, the description of Ghost House (on the poster that came with the Master System) always made me laugh because they said you have to collect the "family jewels"
Yeah, i was really sophisticated back then. I blame Ren and Stimpy.😮
Brilliant video! Thanks for doing this
20:26 in Europe it's named Rambo with an Stallone intro and him on the cover 😄
God damn imagine an alternate universe nowhere the master system got the stuff the nes got.. including marketing.
Thank you Sega for an unforgetable chidhood!
I needed something to focus on other than my 12pm web ex lol ty as always, Man!
You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by and watching it.
The Sega Master System has such amazing library of games, and graphics here are so colorful and more detailed than the NES. Too bad it wasn't successful there in NA, but it was successful in Japan and Europe. Heck Brazil are still playing the Master System today.
@17:18 I remember spending hours playing Zillion and when it was time to pause the game to eat, I pressed the reset button by accident. That was the last time I played the game. I hate the SMS having the reset and pause next to each other.
Great selection of games!
I love the Illusion series and the Wonder Boy games, but the licensing would probably prevent either series appearing on a new release 😔
On the subject of license games; I did like ghostbusters, but it always felt more like a computer game than a console game to me
i guess that i can see that. i had a lot of fun with Ghostbusters, even dying on purpose at Stay Puft so that i could amass a large wealth of over $5 Million.
I never heard of the Master System until about 2023 , Being an American my house was only Nintendo until 1997 when I first got the PSX.
@@britneyspearsvillarosa it was big, in Latin America and Europe Sega won the 8 bits era. When SNES arrives the things changed and SNES won, but before, Sega was almost absolute in some locations in the world, the competition was strong in early 90s.
Master System was bigger in the UK than the NES. I personally owned a NES though.
Every time I see videos praise the Master System, I feel like Uncle Rico... "If could go back... Id take state... Then I'd be soaking it in hottub with my soul mate!"
Ghostbusters!
I could've sworn my childhood memories included playing Bank Panic with the Light Phaser. To the point I've just spent 15 minutes googling to find it - but I can't. So, apparently not, haha. Ha. (peers at brain suspiciously)
Great timing I'm about to clean house and this will be perfect in the background
At least from a graphical standpoint, the Master System was clearly superior to the NES. It's amazing how much better games look on the system in comparison. I'd love to be able to play some of tthe old NES classics with Master System-quality graphics.
