X-Men 2: Clone Wars. The game that began with a "Prologue" level the second that the Genesis powered on and required the player to complete the level to get to the Sega logo and title screen.
The music would also change in some levels, depending on which randomized playable character appeared whenever the player hit the "Reset" button on the Genesis. I discovered it because I got pissed off LOL. I got so mad when I couldn't do anything at that point, I reset the Genesis and was going to do everything all over again. Then when that buggy screen came up, I thought I broke the thing and got scared. Then I was relieved when that was the way to keep going.
It was a very original feature of the game and the first time a game broke the forth wall. I became frustrated after several times of getting to that same point in the game and dieing over and over. The reset blew my mind when I finally figured it out. I'll still dig out that game every few years and give it another try for old times sake.
Trust me, you didnt want any of that smoke. We were better off ending the game there lmao cause of what came next! The Magneto boss fight is even harder to figure out than the reset thing. Its 1 of the hardest games of all time to finish, it took me years of trying when I was very young but eventually discovered how to actually damage Magneto lmao
Dude, what a time! No internet or way to look it up. I was so scared, but took the leap, and sure enough it worked. I don't really remember having to do anything like that until many years later playing Metal Gear Solid.
I friggin’ love that game, I still own it too. Don’t know what I did with the “collectors pin” that came with it, but I’m glad I can still play it when need be.
I think so too. The small sprites make it easy to see the whole screen and all the enemies on screen. It was tons of fun to play with my brother. I love the two player beat ‘em ups. It’s almost not even worth playing a single player beat ‘em up.
I played that at the arcade every time I went. It was such a strange selection of characters! Black Cat I get, but Namor and Hawkeye? I'm sure it was a rights thing, but Daredevil and idk, Moon Knight would have been cool. Or Daredevil and Elektra! Fuck it, double date.
Sakimoto's rendition of the Captain America and the Avengers OST absolutely stomped the SNES version and added to the gameplay in a simular way to Streets of Rage. And something else that was special about that era was how different an X Men game could be. Genesis had Clone Wars and SNES had Capcom's Age of Apocalypse, two of the finest 16 bit X Men games out there.
Yeah i agree, far better than the bleeps and bloops that was the Mega Drive version and it helped that Tim Folin did the music for the SNES version and showed up just how shit western sound design.
I grew up with Maximum Carnage and still play it regularly today. Honestly I would probably say it is one of my favorite games and I love how it is basically the playable form of the Maximum Carnage comic series. All cutscenes in the game are straight from the comic and the other heroes helping out as summons was pretty cool. Also, along they way you get the choice to swap between Spiderman and Venom at certain points if you want and at the final boss you get to switch between both on the fly. The different paths gave me replay value and I think the game is fun as is and do not feel that it being single player only brings it down in the slightest. I was so happy when I finally beat the game the first time and was able to read the comic the game is based on too. Personally I prefer it over Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, but I will admit that may be because I played Maximum Carnage first and remember the struggle me and my family had trying to beat it. It wasn't until many years later on SEGA compilations I got to try out Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. Still fun games, but they aren't as great to me. Separation Anxiety to me is a huge downgrade from Maximum Carnage in everyway and is the inferior title. The only way I find any enjoyment in this game is playing it with my bro for nostalgia's sake and I still get bored halfway through. If you could only play one I would recommend Maximum Carnage hands down.
My closing comments were for you. It's amazing how a game can be forever burned into your life because of how you played it as a kid. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It's always going to be good to you.
@@SegaLordX That is very true. I think the when, why and how one plays a game is just as important as the actual game itself when it comes to the enjoyment a person gets from a game. I know I wouldn't hold PacMan 2 as high as I do if I wouldn't have played it when I did and the situation around it.
Finally beating "X-Men 2: Clone Wars" after so many, many attempts was probably the most satisfying gaming experience I ever had. It's unbelievable just how bullshit difficult it gets in later stages. It's quite possibly one of the hardest Genesis games.
That first XMen game is forever etched into my memories, my dad use to play it all the time when I was like 3. My brother and I would play too, but dad could beat the whole thing when my brother and I could barely get past juggernaut.
Growing up in 90's I played all of these games. Having brothers to trade the controller with was part of the fun as the games were hard to beat. Taking turns we all gave it our best shot and made fond memories with them. Marvel in the 90's was a Juggernaut!
Maximum Carnage is actually quite good, the best Spider-Man game for the 16-bit era, actually. As a beat'em up, it's responsive, fast, the hits have a nice impact to them, you can grab enemies and bring them to you, kill two enemies at once if they surround you. The game also gives more incentive for accurate hits, so you won't be throwing punches in the air (and it gives you a powerful move if you don't waste hits, too). You can find many secret lives and a few secret areas as well. This game is HARD, though. It's not perfect, and the SNES version sounds better (I don't think they used the Mega Drive's sound capabilities to their fullest, specially for the soundtrack). I also enjoy Hulk a lot, even if it's a simplistic and quirky Western early 90's game. X-Men 2: Clone Wars has a unique style to it, it was a highlight at the time.
I still have my X-Men and Spiderman & X-Men game. I beat X-Men , I remember mojos stage. It was late at night and I was devastated I couldn’t do anything until I hit reset on my model one. Man was that a core memory. It blew my mind. Never beat anyone’s level in the other game except cyclops and Spiderman. That was tough. I’m gonna pick up all these other ones cause they look pretty good. Great video man.
The into music for Spider-Man the Animated Series sounds like those old dot matrix printers! The same soundtrack for a 12 pg crappy Happy Birthday banner printing 🎉😂
7:33 There we have the LJN Gold at the End of the Rainbow video game. The one thing where they FINALLY pulled through! Well, maybe not Gold, but at least Bronze. At least according to AVGN ^^
Just one thing to add, Sega Lord; don't forget the boss fight at the end of stage 4 in Revenge of Shinobi when you face a strong man throwing cars and junk at Joe Musashi and as he gets damage, he turns green, kinda resembling The Incredible Hulk! Always enjoy your content! :)
MAXIMUM CARNAGE was indeed a difficult game! But what I liked about it as a teenager was the colorful comic book like graphics and the awesome song “Carnage Rules” by the band GREEN JELLY! Also, the cross promotion through the comics, CD’s and video games helped build its hype and legacy back in the day. Despite its many flaws it did feel like an arcade game came to home consoles.
The first X-Men game on Genesis is something I'll never forget. The four playable characters of that game turned out to be my favorite characters of the X-Men universe, especially Gambit and Nightcrawler.
I liked Maximum Carnage a lot on the SNES. I think the music is better there, and also the SNES doesn't have to compete with Streets of Rage. It's also pretty unfairly hard without knowing where a lot of the secrets are, though, so that gets annoying. I might also not have complained as much about the enemy roster when I played it as a kid, while I probably would today.
Excellent closing statement, M'lord. I'm quite forgiving of games that people crap all over, but I grew up with and love. Sure, it's nostalgia, but I find good in almost every game I play. Games like Arcade's Revenge hold a special place for me, but also others that people crap on. MK Mythologies Sub-Zero and Superman on the NES are just two that are widely crapped on but I love and look back on fondly. Just nostalgia, I know, but I can't hate them!
13:55 of course it’s cut back from the arcade. It’s still great. Better than the SNES version… oh wait, there is no snes version. Or any other home console version… But in all seriousness I loved the arcade version, I love this version too.
The biggest problem with Segas marketing is that they loved to throw around the term, "arcade experience at home." The term was bullcrap to the tenth degree. The Neo-Geo did that, even though nobody could afford it😂
Wow! Marvel superhero games were on a roll back then. But I agree, you could see where some of those games fell short. Anyway, nice documentary Sega Lord X.👍😎
Aside from the enemies being bullet sponges Marvel's Spiderman was one of my favorite games as a kid. I played it with a six button controller back in the day.
A friend of mine had the first Spider-Man game, but man... we got to Doc Oc and we just couldn't figure out how to hit him without getting massacred by his tentacles or figure out how to take pictures and make them sell, we kept getting hit when we tried to get good ones. Still more fun than Maximum Carnage in retrospect. I really didn't get that games controls, and the samey enemies were so dull to fight... but man, it had symbiotes and I wanted my hands on anything symbiote-related. That's just how they get ya...
1:26 this was not the only Shinobi game where SpiderMan appeared in. in Shinobi 1 (arcade), stage 1B had wall-climbing ninjas that had SpiderMan's color scheme.
Dear Sega LordX, I am a Brazilian translator who likes your content. I grew up in the 90's playing Mega Drive a lot (that's how Genesis is known here in Brazil). Would you consider having your content subtitled into Brazilian Portuguese? If so, I would like to offer my services. Just let me know where to contact you more appropriately. Have a great day ahead!
I'm going to have to disagree with you regarding Maximum Carnage and Separation Anxiety. Maybe I just have a high tolerance for beat 'em ups, but I think they're both pretty good games. I'm also one of those rare people who enjoys Adamantium Rage.
Like I mentioned at the end, all of these games have the bones of decent games. I think personal preference and taste is what pulls people to different sides.
@SegaLordX Yeah, but I seem to be one of those odd people with a tolerance for jank. So, sometimes I understand people's problems with some of the games that I think are good or decent.
A review or even a retrospective of anything is always marred a little personal preference or nostalgia... or also a lack of thereof. It's just opinions I say 😅
@TheKayliedGamerChannel-UA-cam I don't really fault anyone for their opinions. It's just sometimes I like to put in my two cents or throw out some hot takes.
I like the opening song and Spiderman theme for the Mega Drive version of Arcade's Revenge. While the visuals weren't great, when I was a kid I like the look of it and would enjoy playing the opening stage and the Spiderman stage. Wolverine's stage was alright, but everyone elses stage was really frustrating.
I enjoyed the first X-men game, Punisher and Maximum Carnage. Like SLX said, X-men 2 is in a class of it's own and is one of the best action games on the Genesis. A must play in my boom
There's an improvement hack of Adamantium Rage that reduces the difficulty among other things, but sadly it crashes every time I play it on my MegaSD or Everdrive X3. You'll have to use an emulator for it to work.
There were some crappy games, but they all pretty much have hacks that make them totally worth playing, and X-Men 2 really is very good. It is a shame Genesis never got anything like Mutant Apocalypse or anything, but the SNES stuff wasn't much better in general.
ran through revenge of shinobi, still got x men 2 clone wars, always got love for adamantium rage, put the wrong key in the bomb for spiderman vs kingpin, yeah marvel did have some gems for the genesis👏😁
As a European, I had no connection to Marvel in my childhood. I felt that these "heroes" were more like Hollywood joke figures. However, if you make a video about Marvel for Sega's 16 Bitter, you should have included the Sega CD. I think it's wrong that the Sega CD is considered completely separate. With the PC engine, the CD-ROM is also not considered separately. The CD-ROM needs the basic console, so it is part of the basic system.
Don’t forget it was kind of like Marvel was still riding like second fiddle to DC at that time I feel! Lots of good marvel, and DC games on the Sega genesis
Avengers was the best Marvel game on the Genesis, absolutely loved that game as a kid! The first X-Men game and even the second were way too difficult. If they had toned that down, they would have been great games as well.
I know you're not a huge fan but I love Maximum Carnage (besides the absurd difficulty spikes & lack of co-op). Think it's a fun beat-em-up wirh a killer soundtrack & was a rare opportunity to play as Venom back in the day!
Clone Wars is to this day possibly the best X-Men game around. If there’s any one old Marvel game that I want to hand over to WayForward for a modern remaster/upgrade, it’s that one. Give it some X-Men ‘97 visual flair, VO upgrades, a way to save your progress… I would buy that so fast.
The first X-Men has a difficulty patch that improves the gameplay a lot. But, using it, unfortunately you'll realize only the first 3 levels of the game were well designed.
One of my first experiences with abject disappointment was Spider-Man/X-Men. I was so happy to finally get that game after drooling over it in the store for months. Holy moly what a soul-crushing realization when I got it home and discovered it fucking suuuuuuuucked.
Sega had the best Superhero games by far, the only SNES superhero games worth playing were Spiderman and Venom, Spiderman and Carnage, Phantom 2044, Batman and Robin, Batman Returns, Spawn, and the unreleased The Shadow game Oh and personally The Tick but thats just bc im a superfan
I have an interesting topic worth a video about. What games on Genesis do you think would benefit with their own Lock-On cartridge? Personally, Streets of Rage 3 is my biggest choice. The Lock-On game would star Adam and Max in their own side story and unique areas. Not only would this compromise for their absence in the main game's roster, connecting both games will give you a non-canon Arcade Mode with branching paths and all seven heroes to choose from. Even the kangaroo. An experimental pick would be Nazo Puyo: Double Roux. Basically the Genesis version of the SNES expansion of the Game Gear entry (wrap your head around that). Plugging it into Puyo Puyo 2 gives you an expanded version of the base game. Not only is Nazo Puyo selectable in the menu, but you also get a Rally Mode, cutscene dialogue, extended endings, and even a karaoke featuring 16-Bit renditions of Katsumi Tanaka's music.

@@SegaLordX Yep! Mainly Terminator with the hair, shades and his exoskeleton . 😀

Rogue was sorely missed in the X-Men games we received. It pains me that she actually had a game, but it was cancelled.
I absolutely loved Clone Wars back in the day; easily one of my fav genesis games.
Bro I love your content. You always come up with a new topic. Thanks for all your hard work 💯
This is a nice midweek surprise. Thanks young lad!
One thing you should do is when introducing the game, put the game cover on the screen showing us. Thank you and God bless 🙏
The name "X-women" just sounds hilarious for some reason. 😅
Oohhh I see what you did there
Lol 😆 ok then.
X-Them
@@stoozdee 🤣
It sounds so wrong
MAXIMUM CARNAGE was indeed a difficult game! But what I liked about it as a teenager was the colorful comic book like graphics and the awesome song “Carnage Rules” by the band GREEN JELLY! Also, the cross promotion through the comics, CD’s and video games helped build its hype and legacy back in the day. Despite its many flaws it did feel like an arcade game came to home consoles.
Captain America and the Avengers is one of my favorites on the NES and even more so on the Genesis. I love that one as a kid
The first X-Men game on Genesis is something I'll never forget. The four playable characters of that game turned out to be my favorite characters of the X-Men universe, especially Gambit and Nightcrawler.
Love playing Spider-Man Vs the Kingpin for the Genesis but the Spider-Man arcade game was just pure legend from 1991-1992 time period.
I’ve been blessed to see all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming
X-Men 2 is in my top 10 Genesis games! One of my all time favorites!
Or any other home console version…
But in all seriousness I loved the arcade version, I love this version too.
Wow I never knew about that X-Woman game. It looked promising.
The Spider-Man name is what prompted me to get a Genesis over a SNES.
May your controllers never fall and your cartridge pins never corrode.
Your support is always appreciated. Thank you so much.
I grew up a sega & marvel fan & that's still true today! Thanks Sega Lord X
I enjoyed the first X-men game, Punisher and Maximum Carnage.
Like SLX said, X-men 2 is in a class of it's own and is one of the best action games on the Genesis. A must play in my boom
The genesis audio seems off like 50hz
Spider-Man vs the Kingpin. Tried to finish it many times but never could. Freaked me out as a kid, especially when Venom turned up unannounced
WAAAAIIIIIT Shinobi is a Marvel Character? :O That is new to me!
Yooo SLX you kiddin me? Spiderman-VS Kingpin was sooo dope to a preteen me!❤
There's an improvement hack of Adamantium Rage that reduces the difficulty among other things, but sadly it crashes every time I play it on my MegaSD or Everdrive X3. You'll have to use an emulator for it to work.
In the market for a Sega Genesis because of old school Madden, road rash, and all these marvel games
Heck yeah! Looking to play on a CRT or a modern TV?
@@PaperBanjo64 well, I've asked around and last two Genesis consoles are easier connecting to newer TVs. Prolly around tax time.
In a nutshell, Marvel and Megadrive didn't go too well together.😕
There were some crappy games, but they all pretty much have hacks that make them totally worth playing, and X-Men 2 really is very good. It is a shame Genesis never got anything like Mutant Apocalypse or anything, but the SNES stuff wasn't much better in general.
@@CMCAdvanced That's true! I tend to forget hacks, but some are really great.
Then came X-Men: COTA 🎉
I think there were a few good ones like Maximum Carnage and Captain America and The Avengers
There were some good games
The punisher is coming out on soon on a capcom compilation!!!
ran through revenge of shinobi, still got x men 2 clone wars, always got love for adamantium rage, put the wrong key in the bomb for spiderman vs kingpin, yeah marvel did have some gems for the genesis👏😁
MegaDrive has some amazing games still.
The only 2 Sega games from Marvel I did play was X-Men 2 The Clone Wars and The Amazing Spider-Man vs Kingpin but on the SEGA CD
great video!!! waiting for a weaponlord or alien soldier video when you can
A blank number 7 in the description? 😮
Corrected.
6:24 the soundtrack of that X Men game, though....
Bad mojo
This was the best episode ever! 😮
I remember playing the 1st X-Men on my Genesis. Didn’t get far. It was kind of tough.
Marvel VS Capcom Fighting Collection is coming digitally September 12 and physically November 22, I'm waiting for November to get it physically!
You can find hack that tried to fix problems in Adamantium rage
Sega had the best Superhero games by far, the only SNES superhero games worth playing were Spiderman and Venom, Spiderman and Carnage, Phantom 2044, Batman and Robin, Batman Returns, Spawn, and the unreleased The Shadow game
Oh and personally The Tick but thats just bc im a superfan
I remember seeing the Spider-man vs Kingpin box at Blockbuster all the time and being super jealous as a SNES owner.
