Fun video! I personally disagree about Tails Skypatrol, I actually have fun playing that one despite its high difficulty. The thing about the game is that you HAVE to know when to slow down and speed up Tails, just blindly trying to rush thru will get you pancaked over and over. Its quite trial and error heavy, and then theres the odd hit detection (Tails hitbox is a mere ONE pixel, so everything ELSE has a bigger hitbox to compensate). But once I got into the games flow I genuinely founf myself enjoying it. Personally, the main reason I like it is because its a very unique take on the Shoot Em Up/Rail Shooter. That said, Im surprised you didnt include the truly awful Game Gear versions of Sonic Spinball and Sonic Blast. Spinball on GG is a complete and utter mess, its jerky framerate, ugly graphics and utterly broken controls/physics will give you a newfound appreciation for the Genesis version. And Sonic Blast on GG is a 2D Sonic game with all the fun and appeal sucked out: its awkward mix of pre-rendered graphics and 2D sprites are just plain tacky and downright dull looking (to quote another reviewer, Sonic looks like a microwaved Happy Meal toy in it!), and the gameplay just isn't fun, even though Sonic has a double jump in it. Its slow as molasses, clunky, almost entirely devoid of challenge (and when it DOES get challenging, like in the water level and the secret final boss, it dips right into complete and utter BS territory) and all around uninspired in every way. Not even being able to play as Knuckles can salvage it. You can tell it was thrown together in a hurry just to give the GG one last Sonic game as a quick sendoff. Both are solid contenders for the worst games in the Sonic series. Id honestly rather play Sonic 4 Episode 1 over those quill-covered turds--and dont even get me started on that one...
Oh shit, my brother and I rented Beast Wrestler back in the day, laughed at the goofy moves and and terrible gameplay, and took it back to the store to exchange for some other title. I think we got Sonic 2 and had a much better time.
You description and comments on games are spot on. I am a Panasonic guy, and your joke about 3DO was spot on, when you buy a 3-D game, you have to scrutinize the shit out of it because it had some really bad ones exactly like that robot one you compared it to. And I think you were describing a double dag and three from the arcade port to the Genesis or Saturn that game no matter where they brought it to sucked even in the arcade I don’t know where they were going with double dragon three number one and number two were decent and funleaving Nintendo. Sad port of the original was better than double dragon three. I’m definitely subscribing I like your channel dude.
Dang...the music in the Amiga Castlevania game sounds what I'd imagine Castlevania elevator music to sound like. And still a shame that Back to the Future only has like...2 good games. Super Back to the Future 2 on the Super Famicom, and that Telltale Back to the Future title.
That comparison of the Robocop sprite to Cotton Hill has me actually wanting a platformer with Cotton. "I killed fitty men, thanks for your cooperation!"
I thought Shadow of the Beast 2 was quite decent, plus - it's got vibes for days! Most people fail to realize it's not a standard action game, but rather an arcade adventure, with inventory puzzles and a definitive order of events. The most fun part is figuring everything out, because once you do, the whole thing can be finished in under 15 minutes. Though the Amiga version is prettier, the Genny one plays much better and has an actual ending cutscene. The SegaCD (and FM Towns) conversion feels very different and lacks in the atmosphere department IMO.
Yeah my friend and I played SotB 2 all the time when it came out on the Amiga, it was so much fun trying to figure out what you had to do and it hand atmosphere in spades. Trial and error was very common in games back then, it was just the norm to have to play through sections of a game again because you died, we didn't think anything of it.
Someone should make a whole channel about bad retro games. They could even make it funny by acting overly angry about it. Why hasn't anyone ever thought of this?
Laughed heavily about Robocop looking like Cotton Hill. He really does. They are the games that I wonder if tbey can be fixed with a ROM hack, improve the handling and change the player sprite as an example.
I remember a friend in middle school wanting me to play Shadow of the Beast II. He made it sound like this awesome game. I ended up playing for a half hour and decided that it was god awful. Honestly, all I remembered about it all these years later was the opening music piece and the death screen music. There was absolutely nothing memorable about the gameplay.
TMNT Tournament Fighters has a special place in my heart. It's a very love-hate relationship for the Genesis version, though, thanks to the fighting game jank. I still wish that Konami's original characters got the action figure treatment (including Sisyphus). Mystery of Convoy is funny as Takara misspelled their character's name on the packaging and in the game. For those curious, Convoy, not Comvoy as they wrote it, is Takara's name for Optimus Prime. Headmaster is better than Mystery (low bar), but only by a little since now you have a health gauge.

I'm old enough to remember that some of those were widely known as horrible games back when there were released: I do remember Dark Castle being deemed "worst game ever" by every game magazine I read back then (mainly PlayerOne in France). Speaking of which, my parents bought some of the infamous bad games when I had my first megadrive for Christmas: Sword of Sodan, Fantasia and Zoom! (hint for the next "bad games" video 😉). Btw, I'd like to say a word or two about Shadow of the Beast on genesis: the port made by EA is really broken in many ways, yet I recently discovered that the Japanese version was ported by someone else, and it is MUCH better in all aspects!
never played the sega DD ports until much later in life via emulation. I honestly thought as a kid DD was an NES original, and didn't know it was an arcade port. Never saw any of the 3 DD arcade games in the wild growing up. Only saw a play choice/DD NES arcade cabinet.
The third one was awful. You could go into an in-game shop, and buy weapons and life refill items, but for an actual credit that was in the machine (they were mostly 50p/c by the time Double Dragon 3 came out), so instead of picking up some bin-chicken and a baseball bat like in Final Fight or SoR, you paid an extra dollar to get them in DD 3. I think they invented microtransactions.
Honestly same here. But arcade cabinets were big and expensive. I played them less at arcades and more at random places like movie theaters, restaurants and bars, so there weren't as many machines, and the machines that existed were more likely to be something more popular. Something like Contra 3 from Konami, Marvel vs Capcom, or the latest 3D fighting games. Another rare but popular choice was a Neo*Geo cabinet that you could swap games or have multiple games on. Metal Slug + Bubble Bobble + some SNK fighter.
I first played Double Dragon on my friend's Master System. Having a Mega Drive and a copy of Streets of Rage by then, I had to laugh at my friend's lot. But still standing on its own, it wasn't too bad.
By far the biggest let down of my entire childhood for video games was RoboCop on the NES. I spent all summer playing the arcade version at local establishments and the letdown I felt when I popped the NES game in was indescribable... I mean it's over 30 years later and I'm commenting on it.
2:26 I'm surprised by this because double dragon 2 on the NES is actually really good. It is the best aged game but it plays while and the hit detection is not an issue. It's always baffling when the version on inferior hardware is better
I feel like you should take note that the version of Dark Castle you showed aswell as what the AVGN reviewed is actually a port of the original name on DOS. The reason the controls feel awkward was because the game was NOT meant to be played with a controller. It was originally made to use with a mouse
I would definitely subscribe to some more videos like this! This video had me laughing my arse off my chair in certain parts even though I don't agree with very single game in it. Sometimes you just gotta crap on bad games where laughing at how bad they are in humour is the only saving grace. ''Supercross Mcgrath 2000'' had me laughing so much when you said that we couldn't even blame the gaming console for the older graphics lol. Lots of crapping on Acclaim which was great and well deserved. Arena and Flying Edge were subsidiaries of Acclaim so if you see those names, you've been warned! ''Wayne's World'' got another mention as well as ''Dark Castle'' from EA which was to be expected.
The four Advanced D&D games (Heroes of the Lance, Dragon Strike, Pool of Radiance and Hillsfar) on the NES should be in this vid cause they're all beyond horrible.
I had Back to the Future 3 on the ZX Spectrum. Now, THAT was a sh*tshow! 😆 SLX, I thank you for playing these abominations so I don't have to! 👍😆 Edit: Yes, please. I would certainly like more in this vein. There's likely a mountain of less than stellar games you could choose from, so keep 'em coming, my good man. I always enjoy your content anyway, but I'm especially entertained by your metaphors, similes and analogies used to describe negative gaming experiences. "The vinegar in the open wound that is a video game!" 🤣
I remember being so excited to find out about that Transformers game when I started to get into emulation 20 years ago. That excitement died immeasurably quickly.
I wouldn't bother with BTTF2&3 on NES either. It's one of those games that where you have to collect things and are constantly getting attacked, and there is no direction without a guide. BTTF NES is actually a fun 'bad game' once you get the hang of the controls and hit boxes in the game. I beat it many times with assistance at all.
I believe it, that's like some E.T. Atari or DOOM 3DO shit, and the final release supports that story. I'd like to read up on it if you can point me to a source.
Regarding the first music played, I'm kind of fond of Batman Returns for the Genesis. It's less fun (more frustrating) than the first, but I like all the moves Batman can do. Shadow of the Beast has no nostalgia for me, however. It has the clunky controls of a PC port, which has no place on a console like the 16-bit Sega.
The clunky controls and crusty graphics of Batman Returns on the Genesis give it a unique charm, I actually like that game a lot. I can't honestly say it's a good game, but I do enjoy playing through it regardless.
You've always seemed like a nice guy so I can't in good conscience say I want to see more videos like this as that would just be cruel and unusual punishment.;) Honestly I think I'd rather just see more videos focusing more in depth on good games you may have only touched on briefly in past episodes.
3:35 there is one problem with improved. If something was really really bad to begin with and the newer edition is an improvement, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good. Bad is an improvement from terrible. Mediocre is an improvement from bad.
Shadow of the Beast could have been a really engaging Metroidvania type experience, but they went for 'arcade hard' instead. It was great on the Amiga, but only because I was 6 at the time :)
That Master System Indiana Jones game actually got a Game Gear port that came out in North America. Everything you said about it is valid, but as a kid I didn't have an options so I played the hell out of it.
I'm always amazed at how well my younger self managed to steer clear of garbage. I can honestly look back at my collection of NES, SNES, and N64 games and say I did pretty good. One of the most important rules that never steered me wrong was don't buy a licensed game unless it was by Konami and sometimes Capcom.
I've never played any of these games, but good to know I can safely avoid them if I come across them. I'd definitely like to see a Part 2 as there are plenty more awful retro games out there to warn gamers about! There are plenty of them! 12:13 I was actually going to be surprised to see Sonic Spinball on the list. 😅 It wasn't my cup of tea either, but it isn't even close to being the worst of the worst on the Genesis. Awesome Possum, anyone?
@@ResidentXombie I've beaten Robocop 1 on NES. I've never made it past the first level of Robocop 2. I completed it without collecting enough "nuke," had to endure the shooting section, and promptly shut the game off. I actually came close to purchasing the game a second time before I remembered that I had a copy and had turned it off in under 10 minutes. I guess I tried to wipe my memory of the game like Robocop getting his prime directives wiped in the movie.
Regardless of the system, am I the only person on Earth who HATED Double Dragon II? The control scheme just plain sucks! Every time you turn from one direction to the other, the kick and punch buttons flip and you are always kicking backward. Does this not bother anyone else?!
I like "Tails Sky Patrol." Once you get used to how his ring interacts with objects, it gets pretty good, and it's actually a pretty underrated creative game.

Oh man this brought back some bad memories. I thank you for making the video but man you definitely brought some of the worst moments of my life here! Lol😂
Some of my thoughts on the games mentioned: Double Dragon Trilogy: The only good thing about 1 and 2 are that they both run at a rock-solid 60 FPS while the arcade originals struggled to do so. At least if you're playing those games in MAME you can overclock the emulated CPU to fix that. (Have any official rereleases offered that option?) As for 3, it's only redeeming quality is that you're given a set of virtual coins to spend. If 15 coins are the default, (I think 20 is the max), that means they give you $3.75 worth of credits to start, (or $5 for the max!) Yeah, I'd doubt anyone would spend that much in the arcades on ONE GAME! Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis. I think part of the reason it's a slow, bug riddled mess is because it was a port from the 2005 mobile version; a port of a port! It says a lot when a homebrew demo ends up performing much better. And the guy who made the proof of concept GBA version? None other than Simon "Stealth" Thomley, who'd help develop the official iOS and Android versions alongside Christian Whitehead! Sega knew these guys could do better, so they let them! Transformers: The Mystery of... Comvoy(sic) was actually released to bridge the gap between seasons 3 and 4 since the movie wouldn't be relased in Japan until years later. So if you where a Japanese fan who _HAD_ to know who killed Convoy (Optimus Prime's name in Japan), and didn't want to wait for the movie, you had to suffer through this game. Imagineering used the same engine from those awful Bart Vs games on NES here. The sound you hear when picking up objects is a dead giveaway to that. Wayne's World will have you partying on just like the movies and the original SNL skits! *...NOT!* Dark Castle. From what I've heard, the original computer version is actually decent. At least decent enough to have a fanbase and receive a sequel! The game was meant to be played with a keyboard and a mouse, which you used to aim. I vaguely remember playing either the Mac version and actually getting a fair way through it without the frustration of the Genesis version. Of course Duncan's still pretty weak and can get staggered by falling a short distance, but at least it's actually doable to topple the Black Knight's throne! Street Combat, from what I heard, uses the SNES' interlaced mode despite the screen resolution still being 256×224 rather than 512×448. I don't know why since that only makes the game look blurry.
I have the Sega ages 2500 version of Golden Axe for my PS2.It's on a compilation disc(Sega Classics)that have a few other games included such as Fantasy Zone,Out Run,Space Harrier, etc.Although the graphics are a little bit inferior compared to the original arcade game,I don't believe it belongs on this video. The controls are responsive, the hit detection is good, and the levels are lengthy with good challenge.I still have fun playing this game.(Yes..believe it or not,my console and games are still working as of September 2024!).
If you ever cover Amiga stuff, you'll find there's a TON of crap on that machine. I'm also traditionally a console gamer but I've put decades into digging into the Amiga library and I've found some great stuff (it took a while). Here are some nifty ones: The Killing Game Show, RoboCod, Hybris (with Space and Enter mapped to modern controller buttons), Zarathrusta, Prime Mover, Pinball Dreams, Rodland, Parasol Stars, Cytron, Battlestorm, Speedball II, Kid Chaos, Microprose Golf, Links Golf, Putty Squad, Lethal Zone, Virtual GP, Grind, Tinyus, Seek & Destroy, Vital Light, Assassin Special Edition, Apidya, Agony, Fire & Ice, Lionheart, Turrican II & III, Gauntlet II, Super Hang-On, Xenophobe, Transplant, Hired Guns, Project X Special Edition, Super Stardust, and Marble Madness. Most run on an Amiga 500, 68000 CPU, 512KB Chip RAM, 512K Slow RAM, 1 MB Agnus/Blitter (ECS).

Both are solid contenders for the worst games in the Sonic series. Id honestly rather play Sonic 4 Episode 1 over those quill-covered turds--and dont even get me started on that one...
These games must've been tough to replay bro we really appreciate it tho! Awesome video SegaLX

Comparing that Joe Montana Sega CD game to John Madden Football '93 is quite a shock. JMF'93 is a masterpiece that I enjoy even today. JMF'92, too.
Wasn't it JMF 92 for the genesis that had the ambulance zooming down the field?
Oh shit, my brother and I rented Beast Wrestler back in the day, laughed at the goofy moves and and terrible gameplay, and took it back to the store to exchange for some other title. I think we got Sonic 2 and had a much better time.
Believe it or not, I have very fond memories of playing Joe Montana football on the Sega CD. Than again I have not played it in around 30 years
I liked the original NFL/Montana Football on Genesis. But not the Sega CD release.
Same but I also really enjoyed the Dracula and Sewer Shark titles at the time too. I still enjoy Road Rash CD and Sonic CD.

Bots always first. :)
I like this idea though. There are so many lists of great games, but not as much for duds.
😂 danm ic that . That's crazy
The worst part of Tail Spin on Genesis is knowing it's a million times better than the Turbografx Tail Spin game.
Unfortunately, I had the TurboGrafx version as a kid and it was definitely a bad game.
I played as a kid back then… I thought I liked. Now… it’s really terrible!
I love watching this channel before I go to sleep. It always puts me in a really good mood, which in turn gives me good dreams,no joke.
At first i thought these were all gamecom games then i realized my phone is in sleep mode 😂
With the exception of the Turok games they published, 'Acclaim Entertainment' was "LJN 2.0"
What about the Mortal Kombat series? And Alien 3 (Mega Drive) was pretty good too.
@@happyspaceinvader508 I forgot those games were published under their label. I always associated those games with Midway though.
Well, they did actually BUY LJN, so it makes sense that they would become them. Afterall, you are what you eat.
@@theyamo7219 And that perfectly summed up what 'Acclaim Entertainment' was back then.
Someone should make a whole channel about bad retro games. They could even make it funny by acting overly angry about it. Why hasn't anyone ever thought of this?
Even better, what if it was a nerd? 🤔
They could call it the annoyed TV toy dork
[52:35] Are you trying to convince us that you did not enjoy making videos for Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch?
Dark Castle was a Mac game, and was great on the Mac. Throwing was done by the mouse, and the sound was better
Great idea for video. There was a LOT of absolute dreck back then, much worse than today.
Yeah, people really think we have it bad now with quality.
I got even more:
1. Every game made or published by LJN especially Back To The Future
2. Ghostbusters on NES
3. Mortal Kombat 3 on Game Gear
4. Mortal Kombat 1 on Game Boy
5. Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones on NES
6. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde on NES
7. Wayne's World on NES
8. Karate on Atari 2600
9. Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom on NES
Spyhunter 2
Super Ice Hockey
Waterworld
DD3 on NES was nowhere near "awful" IMO
@@Blas4ublasphemy If you hate excessive difficulty, then DD3 is that bad. Plus, I was never able to beat it because of this. Game Genie didn't even help. All it did was just me farther in the game. The farthest I've gotten with it was the head boss of the whole game.
@@AaronC143 Oh, I beat it as a kid. Using the weapons at the right time really helps. I also thought Mega Man 1 was better than 2 and current love Spelunky 2 so maybe I'm just a massochist lol. Can you honestly say though, that you played any of those other games on that list to the end boss?
@@Blas4ublasphemy I beaten both Mega Man 1 and 2. I find it funny that you can actually beat the yellow boss in Mega Man 1 with the pause feature. I never played any of the Spelunky games.
Firefly on the Atari is even worse than Karate. At least Karate doesn't have "music" that they can use in Gitmo as torture.
Tails skypatrol I thought was decent.

never played the sega DD ports until much later in life via emulation.
@@Pythoner
I enjoyed "Double Dragon" on Sega Master System quite a bit, and I generally don't like beat 'em ups.
By far the biggest let down of my entire childhood for video games was RoboCop on the NES. I spent all summer playing the arcade version at local establishments and the letdown I felt when I popped the NES game in was indescribable... I mean it's over 30 years later and I'm commenting on it.
Should've Time stamped this Vid!
I like how the Wayne's world game says not, but without any reference at all to what it's saying it about
He's in denial about being trapped in a shitty game!
2:26 I'm surprised by this because double dragon 2 on the NES is actually really good. It is the best aged game but it plays while and the hit detection is not an issue. It's always baffling when the version on inferior hardware is better
Me: (Checks notifications before bedtime)
Me: (Sees SLX has uploaded a video)
Me: (Suddenly finds he has an hour to kill before bedtime)
There's a massively better fan-made port of Castlevania for the Amiga called Castlevania AGA.
I've seen it. So much better.
being about the same age, I can feel the decades of natural frustration of some these games you're describing.
Thanks alot Sega Lord X I won't even waste my time playing any of these games 🎯
The four Advanced D&D games (Heroes of the Lance, Dragon Strike, Pool of Radiance and Hillsfar) on the NES should be in this vid cause they're all beyond horrible.
I had Back to the Future 3 on the ZX Spectrum. Now, THAT was a sh*tshow! 😆
SLX, I thank you for playing these abominations so I don't have to! 👍😆
Edit: Yes, please.
He got sonic on here ... alright I guess
Great video! Please make more like this!
I remember being so excited to find out about that Transformers game when I started to get into emulation 20 years ago. That excitement died immeasurably quickly.
"But why would you do that to seven other people?" One of the sharpest lines I've ever heard, about a video game. Nice.
Apparently Sonic Genesis was made by 1 guy in a single month
I believe it, that's like some E.T. Atari or DOOM 3DO shit, and the final release supports that story. I'd like to read up on it if you can point me to a source.
I believe this as well. No way that's a team effort with a decent budget. Pure cash grab.
I would not be surprised, it looks to me like it looked, sounded and played like ass. I'm glad I skipped it entirely.
If it looks like ass, sounds like ass, controls like ass, then it probly is ass! 😂
Maybe it was the guy who made the Mega Man DOS games
Regarding the first music played, I'm kind of fond of Batman Returns for the Genesis. It's less fun (more frustrating) than the first, but I like all the moves Batman can do. Shadow of the Beast has no nostalgia for me, however. It has the clunky controls of a PC port, which has no place on a console like the 16-bit Sega.
I really appreciated the grappling hook, cape, and utility belt mechanics
@@joeyjo-joshabadu9636 exactly! And the bat shower
The clunky controls and crusty graphics of Batman Returns on the Genesis give it a unique charm, I actually like that game a lot. I can't honestly say it's a good game, but I do enjoy playing through it regardless.
I enjoyed it renting it back in the day but when I went back to it it just didn't hold my interest
Beast II and the first were never good games they were only impressive from a technical perspective
Shadow of the Beast could have been a really engaging Metroidvania type experience, but they went for 'arcade hard' instead. It was great on the Amiga, but only because I was 6 at the time :)
It's excruciating. I was so fed up with that design I never want to play it again.
Love videos like this brings back my own disappointing experiences.
If there's LJN in the logo, avoid
I've never played any of these games, but good to know I can safely avoid them if I come across them. I'd definitely like to see a Part 2 as there are plenty more awful retro games out there to warn gamers about! There are plenty of them!
12:13 I was actually going to be surprised to see Sonic Spinball on the list. 😅 It wasn't my cup of tea either, but it isn't even close to being the worst of the worst on the Genesis. Awesome Possum, anyone?
Robocop 2 on a NES is one of the worst platformer nightmare that I ever experienced since childhood till present days.
I beat Robocop 2 and Terminator 2 on NES, only because that’s all I had back in 1992!
I think I would have shelved my NES and played some boardgames instead.
@@midwestmonster9886 lol, you have no idea how much of a Robocop and Terminator fan I was. I couldn’t stand The Predator NES game though.
The CPU is Eternal Champions are TMNT Tournament Fighters on the Mega Drive making it not worth persevering a rare misfire from Konami.
I think the one thing that irks me the most about Mario is missing is that they used Mario's Sprite with Luigi's colors
Regardless of the system, am I the only person on Earth who HATED Double Dragon II? The control scheme just plain sucks! Every time you turn from one direction to the other, the kick and punch buttons flip and you are always kicking backward. Does this not bother anyone else?!
It bothers me. It's a counterintuitive scheme likely implemented to "innovate" upon the beat 'em up genre.
I like "Tails Sky Patrol." Once you get used to how his ring interacts with objects, it gets pretty good, and it's actually a pretty underrated creative game.
Damn, the last time I watched a Sega Lord X video I’d never touched a Sega, now there’s a Dreamcast chilling in my room. This content is more important to me than ever!
I've always enjoyed Sonic Spinball. I remember beating it just once. But I understand that most never enjoyed it as much.
I think Shadows of thje beast looks pretty cool...I'm used to the whole 16 bit, trial and error, die a lot, gameplay
Did the developers even tried playing their games?
Makes you wonder right?
i believe developers did play as in check or test their games for bugs or glitches
if a bug or a glitch is found they have to send the game back to fix bug or glitch
"Did the developers even try playing their games?"
If you were one of these devs, you'd express annoyance.

Some of my thoughts on the games mentioned:
Double Dragon Trilogy: The only good thing about 1 and 2 are that they both run at a rock-solid 60 FPS while the arcade originals struggled to do so.
*...NOT!*
Dark Castle.
(Games I’d also include here)
Driver 3 (PS2 &’XBOX)
TMNT 3: Mutant Nightmare (GameCube, PS2, & XBOX)
Balls of Fury (Wii)
I have the Sega ages 2500 version of Golden Axe for my PS2.It's on a compilation disc(Sega Classics)that have a few other games included such as Fantasy Zone,Out Run,Space Harrier, etc.Although the graphics are a little bit inferior compared to the original arcade game,I don't believe it belongs on this video. The controls are responsive, the hit detection is good, and the levels are lengthy with good challenge.I still have fun playing this game.(Yes..believe it or not,my console and games are still working as of September 2024!).
