- In this video, Shannon shows you how to install a smoke detector. The process is the same for smoke detectors and CO2 detectors. The one shown here is a regular battery powered version but there are also hardwired versions available depending on what is required where you live.

Basic but important project from one of my most favorite UA-cam channels.
Hi. I’m a subscriber. I enjoy your videos. As a handyman, I would like to share two bits of information for your benefit. One is that there are different manufacturers of these products. With that in mind, if you install a model that has two separate buttons, one to test and the other to “hush”, I recommend that you use a marker and make a visible black dot on the “hush” button when it accidentally (false positive) occurs. Because of the height and the size and color of the letters indicating the “hush” button, the visible black dot helps the homeowner. With that said, the other bit is that excessive dust build up inside the unit can and does cause it go off. I also tell my customers that using a broom or mop handle may allow them to reach without a ladder. Most of my customers are elderly. Thanks, have a great day!
Thank you for the info this will be my FIRST time doing any thing like this. Wish me luck
One of the best! Thanks
Great reminder sir.
My thumb is always up to your videos
Good job 👍
Thank you for sharing
Thanks Shannon, I need to replace my old Smoke detector. 👍
Fabulous installation nice one 🇮🇪👏😎
😮 ❤ This Video. Everyone Needs This Smoke Alarms.
Will buying new ones today. Good video. New subscriber!
6:45 that suspense though. Gotta love the Milwaukee tools tio
I prefer anchoring smoke alarms with screws, but as I'm sure your aware there are smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that anchor with an adhesive tab only. In fact our town fire department uses the adhesive type in their annual smoke alarm drive for fire safety.
Aye Shannon... Your killing it! Redo your how to mark and cut roof rafters with a speed square. Please use a Swanson speed square if possible. Thanks for reaching and teaching!!!
Thank you!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you I need to do this, but wish you would show how to replace a hard wire one. ❤️
Great video thank you!
What is the difference between the battery and the hardwired?
I knew you were from Saskatchewan 2 seconds in 😂 Thanks for the video buddy
had a comment for you thoughts please thank you just tried to mount an alarm or something and I found that it seems the base was more secure when the screws were not lined up thoughts please thank you!!!! I mean the screws I put in were not on a horizontal line thoughts?
in 2003 the contractor hardwired 2 detectors into the ceilings of the 2 new bedrooms. one month later one started beeping, so i changed the battery. a week or so later it resumed beeping, so i removed the battery. a few days later the beeping came back. i had no recourse but to remove the detector completely. a month later the behaviour started in other detector. i haven't had detectors in the bedrooms since, just two holes with the wires hanging out.
If you install the smoke and c/o combo unit, your covered. For me it's once a year change the batteries in 4 units.
Tiny bit of comedy in this video, nice!!
I hate the sealed 10 year batteries. When they start chirping, I have to throw away the whole thing and be without protection until I can get to the store and buy a replacement. They always seem to die before 10 years, and I've had one die as soon as 4 years after the date of manufacture (in regular indoor conditions, no extreme temperatures). With changeable batteries I can just pop in some new batteries.
I agree. I've had the same issue. Haven't had one last more than three to four years yet. I've had them go off twice now when there was no fire or smoke. I'd rather just replace the battery every year.... like the gas can, the older ones were better.
These are a new requirement in my Province (10 year battery) SO I guess time will tell how long this lasts.
You came on with a video that I need to do.!!!
Currently, I have the smoke detectors that I can change batteries - they're 28 years old - if I keep on replacing the batteries, aren't they still good.???
I would say no replace them. Most detectors should be changed every 10-15 yrs anyways because lint, dust and dirt can effect how well they are functioning. Its cheap safety for your family
Thanks for reaching back to me.
I'll get them replaced - maybe this weekend - and thanks for the video.!!!
👍
I want to ditch my old hard wired unit that came with the house with the First Alert.
There's something in the directions that says I can't install over an existing "electrical box"
Am I reading that right? Dues that mean I can't cover up the hole in my ceiling where the old one was mounted?
Thank you for responding
I have never noticed that warning? As long as it can come on and off I do not see why?
@@HouseImprovements I know right??!! Doesn't seem like it would matter.
Maybe because I have multiple alarms throughout the house and you can't take one off line or they all won't work?
Idk...
I installed two of these just left December, and they both started chirping tonight. I have no idea as to why. They stopped, but they were blinking red. I thought they were supposed to be 10 years not four month
I had one in a customers home do that and it seems it was getting dust from a near by overhead heat duct. I replaced it and moved it a few feet further away and its been good since.
You could contact the manufacture.
💯👍👍
they need to design a vandal proof smoke detector because the tenants at my 60 locations can't seem to leave them alone. :) every year i find myself replacing them.
They start beeping and the tenants are too cheap to buy another battery. We started buying 10 packs & if there was an annual inspection (depends on landlord) I'd change batteries & furnace filters. (Furnace filters were another thing tenants will not change... but a few HVAC calls usually convinces landlords to let maintenance make monthly trips just for filters... which also gets them a free 'condition report' of the entire unit.
@@Le_Comte_de_Monte_Felin i have been installing 10 year battery smoke detectors and the bastards disappear them because when they go off, for whatever reason, AND when that happens now they have no battery to pull out ...they get ripped out of the wall never to be seen again. :(
i'm tempted to put a breathable lockbox over them but regulations probably won't allow it.
Some of them have a delay.... (camera close up) (hmmm face) haha funny.
I don’t want to tell you your business but I was a Fire Inspector for more than 12 years In Ma. You failed to go over what type of technology is required, Photoelectric or Ionization detectors.
